Last weekend I attended the Cars 3 Press Junket. The Cars 3 Press Junket wasn’t your normal junket, it was held across the street from Disneyland at the Convention Center and everything there was larger than life, including the personalities of those we interviewed on that day.

Our last interview of the day included Owen Wilson (voice of “Lightning McQueen”), Kerry Washington (voice of “Natalie Certain”),
Cristela Alonzo (voice of “Cruz Ramirez”) & Armie Hammer (voice of “Jackson Storm”).
These guys were quite playful in our interview and most of their responses were hilariously sarcastic, but we did get a few heartfelt answers.
One of the themes in Cars 3 is learning from your mentors and trusting what you learn. So we asked the cast who their mentors were. Kerry Washington said that Owen Wilson required them all to say he was their mentor. Of course everyone laughed at that. And Owen said……
It just feels good to be a mentor.
But it was Cristela that really moved me during the interview. Cristela was very grateful to have the role in Cars 3 and found herself in the sound booth thanking John Lasseter for the chance. She wasn’t sure that she would ever get to do anything like this. Here is the story she told us….
It’s like so many people tell you, especially in the kind of hood that I grew up with, they always tell you that you can’t do anything, you know. And everybody in the neighborhood is very quick to knock you down a peg. So John Lasseter took that story and actually ran with it. So there’s a speech where I get upset at Lightning, and one of the lines is
dream small, he told me.
And that was actually a line that I told Lasseter about my family. My family always told me to dream small, and it was that thing were they told me to dream small because they didn’t want my heart broken.
ANOTHER THEME IN THE MOVIE:
Believe in yourself
More from Cristela:
So, you know, it was that thing where they always said you can’t have big dreams because big dreams don’t happen for people like us. So it’s that story where that speech and these stories that I started telling Pixar evolved into Cruz. So I always tell people what I like about Cruz, yet at the same time it’s very heartbreaking, is that Cruz gets to win in the story, and I don’t know if I get to win in my story.
You have to watch the movie to know what she means..
So it’s that thing where like, you know, it’s that thing where I try to bring that part of me into Cruz, and I think that that’s when they realized that a lot of the heart of the story came from that.
I truly believe that Cristela is the heart of this Cars movie. Her personality really shined in the interview room. She was even really sassy because after she told us that amazing story someone asked her, How does anyone follow that.
she said. Again the room was full of laughter.
With that we had to find something else to ask, so we asked Armie how he channeled his inner jerk for Cars 3. Because it had to be hard right?
It was funny because, you know, I mean, I had like good, strict parents, always told you to be nice to everybody and all that, so then you get in the recording, but they’re like no, we really want you to kind of really jerk it up, like be like the biggest jerk. I’m yeah, got it, got it, got it. I tried……no………… I mean we want more like way more……. so it was, it was fun getting to do that, getting to like access and do that, but in like a safe environment, you know, where you’re not actually offending anybody. It’s good.
And finally we thought it would be interesting to know how everyone got involved with the films. Of course we know that Owen has been with the franchise since the beginning. John Lasseter asked him if he wanted to be part of it, and that was before they knew it would be a big deal. Kerry Washington said she had been a fan of the franchise for a long time and was excited to be asked to do something that her children could watch. She said that she was asked if she could play a “bossy pants character, super arrogant” and she said “yeah”. Cristela said she was invited out to Pixar and had no idea that it was a job interview until well into the conversations and them telling her all about the “Cruz character”. She said she would have dressed better if she had known. Which made everyone laugh. Armie didn’t really have a story to tell us.
I wish I had a really good story. They called me, they said do you want to be in the movie? And I was like yup.
All four of these actors brought their larger than life personalities to the big screen and you’re going to love it. Go See Cars tomorrow June 16 in theaters.
