I have the most exciting news to share: my sister is pregnant!! My sister spent a few years trying to get pregnant and had the most difficult time. Finally, they made the decision to try IVF and the first attempt was unsuccessful. Because it’s so expensive they almost gave up, but instead they decided to try one more time and happily it worked. I’m super excited for her and that I’m going to be an aunt for the first time. Just look at this happy family…
No wait, that’s just part of the family…..
That’s the two happy parents. They haven’t registered yet because it’s still a little early. I’ve been chatting with her on the phone about what’s she’s going to register for and what I’m going to get for her. Pampers gave me a grant to use to help someone with their registry. I chose my sister for two reasons: one, because it’s amazing to be able to do something for family, but also because this particular pregnancy has been a financial hardship on them because of the IVF process. To be able to help them even in a small way is a huge deal to me. My daughter is ecstatic that she is getting a cousin and is of course helping me spoil my sister.
Now what do you get first time parents?
Most people will create a registry and I’m so excited I get to help her with hers. Let me tell you what we did. We went into one store and registered. As we walked down the isles we looked at all the different items in the baby section and picked everything we “thought” we needed. When it came to toys my husband would hit himself in the head with the toy and if it didn’t hurt, we put it on our list. I can’t even remember if we registered for diapers or not, I think we did. When we registered for our wedding we registered for toilet paper.
Did you know more than half of moms have regrets about what they registered for?

Here are a few things I wish I didn’t have…..
There is no need for a diaper wipe warmer. The diaper wipe warmer only dried out the wipes and made them unusable
There is no need for a diaper disposal system. These things are hard to keep the bags changed and in the middle of the night impossible to use. We ended up using a trash can and changed it often. It was much quicker and used regular trash bags and not a special type of bag.
We didn’t use a bottle warmer or a bottle drying rack. My first child I mostly breastfed. When we used bottles we just gave it to her cold or room temperature. She wasn’t picky. For my son, we had to use formula and didn’t have to warm it. As far as cleaning them, it was just as easy to clean them by hand or in the dishwasher and then dry on a dish drying rack.
What you do need……
You will always need diapers
You will always need wipes
You will always need clothes
For the first three items you need LOTS and for clothes and diapers you need multiple sizes. My kids were large babies and continued to grow quickly. We were out of newborn within a few days and then each diapers size we transitioned very quickly. So, when buying diapers for someone, get them size 1 and 2 because they should be in those sizes soon.
You will always need bathing, health and skin care. Of course, you need a bed, a car seat and bedding. Having things like sound makers or a mobile are nice to soothe the baby at night. As my kids got a little older I was happy to have the playmat with all the colorful items that hung over their heads.
I could go on and on with advice for what to do for you baby but as someone who has been a first-time parent I know this rule. Listen to the advice that everyone gives you and then make your own decisions. This is your baby, trust yourself to make mistakes and recover from them. You can’t do this perfectly, you can only do your best. Equipping yourself with the staples will make this new adventure easier!
