I love the Kidney Foundation, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Disabled American Vets, etc. They all take in items and sell them in thrift stores. My family donates items to them and buys items from them. It’s an awesome thing… Helps charity and it saves items from recycle, too.

I like to support a local charity for women and children. They have a constant turnover – women stay for 30 days while the shelter helps them find jobs, training and housing, some of the housing provided by another branch of the same charity. They frequently arrive with almost nothing and leave ready to have their own households. They accept toys, clothes, food, cleaning products, just about anything! Perhaps there’s somewhere similar near you?

Another charity I love is actually a friend of mine is a pediatrician in a low income area, she collects new and gently used books for her patients. She tries to give each patient a book each time she sees them. She says many of these children don’t even own one book.

One of my favorite organizations that fits your criteria is the Samaritan House. They give victims of domestic and family violence a safe haven to get back on their feet. Because most women and children show up with nothing, they can use just about anything and are very appreciative of the donations.

One more thing… Grab a pad of paper and a pen and start listing out your items and the ARVs. The US Government has guidelines for you, too, as far as what is tax deductible. If you have it all listed out before you work with the charity, it makes the process for receipts a LOT easier.

I would go with a local family center or if you have a women and children center that would be good. Here we have the HOPE center and before we moved here we lived near a shelter for families getting away from domestic violence. They were always in need of stuff because usually the women would just live there homes in a hurry without packing and so they didn’t have much.

They are run entirely by volunteers, and all monies, less operational expenses, are given back to the community. My favorite “charity” is ReTails Thrift Shop. It is sponsored by AnimalKind. All of their proceeds go to low cost spay-neuter. They take donations and any donations they can’t use go into a big truck. When the truck is full, somebody pays them for whatever is in it. The employees are really nice, and there is ALWAYS some kind of fun sale. One day, you get 50% off something by showing them your best disco move, another day you get 50% off by showing them a picture of your pet, etc.

I agree about the Battered Women’s Shelter. When I volunteered for them, it was so sad to see these exhausted women come in and rummage through the piles of junk clothing, trying to find ANYTHING to put their kids in for the night.

And even just the stuff people take from motels – shampoo, soap, etc – that would all be greatly appreciated by the Shelters.

Cool. I’ve been having a hard time finding a good local charity to donate used items too. Salvation Army is OK, but they re-sell things instead of giving them to those in need. I’ve heard there’s a local family services organization that allows people to take what they need.

some of the charities around here are thru churches , have you tried any of them? and the salvation army is another good one to take donations to, or have pick up.and another thing you might try is talking to the schools in your area, some might take for their yard sale when they are trying to raise money for trips to take the music dept on trips ,it never hurts to call and ask, even if they dont usually have a yard sale , you could put it in their ear and leave your name and number in case they decide to run with it, hope you get lucky!

Try a basic cold frame, i bet you could still grow some leafy greens. Our winters are usually pretty mild…but not this one. This year has really sucked.

I finally figured out the ge commercial song, it was really bugging me. The kid is in the doctors office and the doctor sticks in a tongue depressor and then there is a whole bunch of people singing with no words.
The song is Ode To Joy

If no one has done so yet, may I recommend Haven of Rest? They’re a very good organization that my family donates to, and they take many types of items, including food and clothing, etc. Not sure if they will take shipments, though…might only be in person, and I’m not sure where you live.

Another possibility is The Cat House on the Kings. Watch this video to see why. (It’s an adorable video with many cute kitties.) They mostly need items for cats and cash, though.

Most of us who enter contests also do the ‘freebies’ (shampoos makeup ) along with the transitional house, the family shelter isnt far away. I dont wear makeup (or very little) and when I have a basket or small box full, I take it to the shelter. Alot of times its full size samples which is nice as it is something they cant buy with an EBT card and would have had to pay for out of pocket.

I would have everyone in sleeping bags in the living room. At that time of the year, have you thought about camping at a local park. Or the kids in the backyard. Loved doing that as a kid.

We have a 2 local churches that run thrift shops. Yes, you need to take items to them and they don’t have room for furniture. They also run a pantry giving out food items to those in need and a soup kitchen. The community is an oldtime mainstreet town where many do not have cars relying on our limited mass transit.

Betty, I think prizes don’t get claimed for two reasons. 1. Person doing giveaway may not email winners. 2. Person enters so many giveaways they forget which ones end on which date, and never check back.
