Disney provided hotel and transportation to LA for the Solo: A Star Wars Story press junket and movie premiere. We interviewed Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clark and today I’m sharing our Director Ron Howard interview. I’m sure you know that Ron came on about four months into the project. Filming had already started and there was a lot of pressure to get it right. He felt most responsibility for Alden Ehrenreich. He said he knew there would be a lot of judgement surrounding him and his performance.
What went into creating Solo: A Star Wars Story?
Recreating Han, or taking Han back to just a street rat wasn’t an easy line for Ron Howard and Alden to walk. They used inspiration from Harrison but a lot are just small things. Alden did spend a little time talking to Harrison before he started filming. He also watched all the older movies. Alden thought about the body language and used very subtle almost subliminal movements and felt familiar to the audience.
How Did Ron Join Solo: A Star Wars Story?
Ron received a call from Kathleen Kennedy to schedule a breakfast appointment. She then asked if Larry Kasden could also come and when he got there, John Kasden was there as well. He first thought, they must want to talk about a future Star Wars film. Then he found out that they were in crisis with the young Han Solo movie and they asked if he would consider coming on. His first response was no, but he changed his mind after reading the script and talking to his wife who told him he would regret it if he didn’t do it.
What makes a successful Star Wars Movie?
Ron talked about how he felt responsible for Alden, but he also told us his responsibility to the fans. When making a Star Wars movie you have to have the action elements and the sci-fi elements all fit and tell a story. There has to be humanity and humor and drama. They have to have deep themes that relate to classic themes. He said that as he thought about it he realized just how big and complex it was. But he also found it fun and followed advice from George Lucas.
“Trust your instincts”.
Isn’t that also the same advice that Obi Wan gave Luke as he was shooting the Death Star?
“Trust your instincts, use the force”
What About the Solo Cast?
Most of the actors were already cast and he is a fan. Ron said that Warrick is a friend and a great guy. Woody Harrelson is someone that Ron has worked with before. He did get to bring on Paul Bettany because some scenes with the character he plays needed to be re sequenced.
Everything that Ron Howard put into Solo: A Star Wars movie created a fun action movie with potential for future stories. You can see what I’m talking about May 25.
