As a being who exists with severe allergies to practically (and thankfully) everything but food, I was very excited to receive the Venta Airwasher LW15. I have spent decent time in a facility I like to refer to as simply, “the nose doctor” where I can maintain a healthy standard of living through treatments of which I shall spare you the gory detail. In short, I’m basically so allergic to myself that it’s off the charts and the most I can do is to not have carpets, curtains, cloth furniture, and to just “live with it.” And I’ll tell you, a stuffy nose does not a good karaoke singer make.
Interestingly enough, my allergies seem to flair in urban environments, leading me to believe that not only do dust mites impede my improbable karaoke career, but SMOG also does. Since arriving in NYC, I’ve been dying to get an air washing machine for this reason. While I’m not sure about the Venta Airwasher’s capabilities of removing smog from the air, it definitely cuts down on dust motes and other irritating nasal debris that float around the room.
Because of my particular allergies and my cats, I chose to place the Venta Airwasher in my bedroom, hoping to promote better sleep and a less stuffy awakening in the morning. The Venta Airwasher works by an intake fan and a water wheel that basically turns in the basin of the machine as the fan spins. The intake fan circulates the air and sucks in particles which will stick in the wheel of the machine and get left behind in the water. In turn, the machine is a slow humidifier which helps to keep the air comfortable, especially now that winter has come and the radiator is sucking all the moisture from the air!
Although the design is simple, it is amazing how much junk gets pulled from the air. I see fewer dust motes floating through otherwise inspiring shafts of light and although there is still plenty of cat hair around from my furry feline friends, the Venta Airwasher helps to keep it out of the air. Just look at what the machine has collected after a few days of use!
Another nice thing about the Venta Airwasher is that I only have to fill the basin every couple of days. I’m not waking up in the middle of the night to refill it, or having to refill it before I rush off to work in the mornings. Additionally, I like that it has an automatic shut-down feature when the water is low. It has two speeds, both are quiet and I can sleep with either running, but a more audio-sensitive individual might choose to use the slower setting at night. I also like that it is light-weight and compact. Here in New York, space is limited and the LW15 is about a 1’x1’x1’ cube that fits easily here or there. On top of that, it is easily cleanable. I just plop it in the shower and give it a scrub with a brush and a good rinse with the shower head and it is ready to go. Venta also sells a decalcifying solution you can use when calcium builds up from the water in your machine. This is a great solution to a problem I had with my old air washer in Korea.
After a week of use, I find that the Venta Airwasher has noticeably improved the amount of debris floating in the air and helped me to sleep a more comfortable sleep without the normal sinus congestion that I normally suffer. Additionally, it takes the dry edge off those nights when the radiator heats up with a vengeance. I would definitely consider getting a second product to keep in our living room so that I feel as comfortable in all corners of my home.
AND LOOK! The Kitties love it too!
