To set up some of the story in Wrinkle In Time we had to have a bad girl, the girl the is a bully and teases Storm’s character Meg Murry. And that girl was played by Rowan Blanchard, formally Disney Channel star from Girl Meets World. My daughter loves this girl.
Her character in Wrinkle in Time is completely different from Girl Meets World so we asked her what it was like to play a mean girl.
I mean, it was definitely different for me. I felt like I was doing it in this way where it wouldn’t be, gosh, minimized to just a very stereotypical mean girl role. I really trusted Ava to make a character that felt complex and more than just a mean girl. I think there’s a lot of layers to Veronica that we get to see throughout the film. You guys saw it? So, I think, I don’t know, there’s a lot of different parts to her that you sort of see as the film unfolds where she’s more than just the bad girl or the mean girl, which was a relief.
She also talked about how she learned that most bullies are probably in pain themselves. Rowan seems to have it all together but admits she has to give herself permission to be a warrior on the daily. She’s very conscious of needing to empower herself to be fearless. She has to remind herself that it’s ok that she’s in the room with other famous people and that she does deserve to be there because she has worked hard too.
She loved working with Ava DuVernay and has the utmost respect for her.
Just, I mean, I got to work with her. Literally, Ava. But seriously, you guys, her magnitude as a person is so overwhelming. And just the idea that this woman has worked so hard and still remembers everybody’s name. Like, that was the one thing that I realized so much on working on the same side as her is she knows the entire crew by name and just being able to follow this woman who’s so loyal to everyone around her and so giving and wants to not only succeed but wants to bring people up with her, it was so incredible.
I don’t know. I looked to her as so much more than just an inspirational director. She’s just like this incredible person that I’m so grateful to have in my life in so many ways.
She was very excited to get to meet Oprah. During our interview she mentioned that she was about to have an interview with Oprah and her together, and that it was going to be a pivotal moment. There was life before Oprah and then there will be life after Oprah. It was a really cute thing to say. I mean, I’ll always remember being the in the same room with Oprah Winfrey, I even took her photo. I think we have a lot to look forward to in Rowan’s Future. For now you can see her in Wrinkle In Time that is now in theaters.
