I have a terrible fear of bridges. I know it’s common for people to have a fear of bridges. Lots of people have a fear of driving over a bridge, or a fear of being on a bridge, but it’s not that bad. For me, it’s terrifying to be on a bridge. Even most highway overpasses scare me. I once had to drive over a one lane bridge over the Mississippi and it was TERRIFYING and I will NEVER do it again. Where do I think my fear came from?
It could be just a normal fear that I have, but I have a feeling that it stems from my early childhood. When I was a little girl with my dad around the holiday season we were visiting his fiancé at the time. She’s now my stepmom. We left late one night and on the way home to our house, his truck broke down. This section of highway 75 that we were stranded on was close to an intersection that had a stores and a gas station where we could call someone to help. I’m not even sure there was a thing such a Roadside Assistance back then. There certainly weren’t any cell phones. So we had to get out of the truck and walk across a bridge. A bridge that had another highway underneath it. I think I threw a fit and told my dad no way, he couldn’t leave me, so he forced me to walk with him. I was out of my mind scared, and so thankful when I police man pulled up next to us. He helped us and I think we ended up staying the night at my stepmom’s that night, and I stayed with her until my dad’s truck was fixed.
To this day I still have a fear of bridges. I HATE walking across them more than anything and driving on them makes me nervous too. To get into Seattle we have to go over a bridge and I hate that too. When it rains I find it even more scary, so I’m really thankful that now we have Roadside Assistance. I don’t ever want to be stranded again and have to walk across a bridge, or have to deal with my children who might also be afraid at night when our car breaks down. It’s just an added assurance that helps me travel.
