While I was in LA for the Battle of the Sexes Press Junket they gave me Tennis lessons with the same coach that gave the actors tennis lessons. Taking these lessons made me remember just how much I love to play tennis, and that I wasn’t exactly doing it correctly. Oh well, I’m no professional but it was so fun. Let’s go over that I learned…
First, how to hold the tennis racket. To hold the racket correctly place the racket in front of you then pick it up with the hand you write with. That’s it, that’s how you hold the racket.
Second, when you do a shot right handed or backhanded (whichever hand you are) you go all they way across your shoulder. I’ve been thinking about the physics of why and it suddenly dawned on me that when you do it that way you’re going to put a spin on the ball that sends it more down than up. I tend to hit the ball to hard and if I was to go all the way across the ball would go more towards the court than out of bounds so I’m going to try to swing all the way across from now on.
Third, we learned proper form for shots closer up on the court. This was different, instead of swinging from bottom to across your shoulder you hold the racket more in front of you and hit the ball.
Fourth we learned how to do an overhead shot. That’s when you hit a really high shot.
Finally we learned hot to serve.
Also, we met two amazing actors that are in the movie, Elisabeth Shue and Austin Stowell.
We took selfies and learned how they learned tennis as well.
Oh and we saw Elisabeth play some Tennis.
Here’s a video of me going through all of the drills.
