Ralph Breaks The Internet, The Story, The World and The Population #RalphBreaksTheInternetEvent

October 25, 2018 by Momstart 2 Comments

Wow, do I have a lot of amazing content to share with you today. A few months ago, I went to Walt Disney Animation Studios to chat with animators and designers that worked on Ralph Breaks the Internet also known as Wreck-It Ralph 2. These people, with bounds of enthusiasm for what they do broke down each piece of creating the story, creating the world and populating it with characters. So here is a quick re-cap of just those three HUGE pieces.

Ralph Breaks the Internet Story Process

It looks like in this story there is going to be a lesson for Ralph and friendship and liking yourself. Both Ralph and Vanellope are going to have to deal with who are they? Vanellope is going to face that fact that she might not be a car racer anymore. Who is she without her video game. Then we have Ralph and him having with YESSS and what influence is she going to play on the two of them and how will it affect their friendship.

RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET

One other key element to the story is going to be Ralph and how he goes viral and how he deals with it. The story team had great fun coming up with “viral” ideas for Ralph’s videos. Of course they played with unboxing videos, cats and many other memes. Remember a lot of things that go viral on the internet are completely random.

As the story develops they do screenings to help them judge their decisions are going. They use these to make necessary changes to the story.

Here are a few Story facts:

They had 15 story artists

10 screenings

45 total sequences in the film

153 total sequences boarded

7,883 total sequences versionsRALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET

Ralph Breaks the Internet Worlds

Now let’s shift a little from the story and talk about the environments, which is basically creating the world wide web. Of course they had all the environments in the video game store. From there they had to decide how would Ralph and Vanellope get to the internet and what would it look like. They decided to use the cables and translated that into animation. They made the internet look like a metropolis.

Disney has gotten very good at creating and recycling what they created which saves time and money. The computer is able to take a certain buildings and then change them just ever so slightly.RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET

In the background you will find some very interesting items if you look closely at the world. You will find a hashtagging, loading wheel, some real world names and some made up names on the business. Every choice was intentional. The transportation devices were important and a lot of consideration went into those. , Some buildings you will see are “under construction” kind of like when you come to a website that is being updated. Screens are everywhere. The entire art department of the entire studio created screens and helped with videos for buzz tube.  RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET

Make sure you see Ralph Breaks the internet more than once just so you can see everything in the background.

Wreck-It Ralph Breaks The Internet: The Princess Scene

July 17, 2017 by Momstart Leave a Comment

WOW! This last weekend at the D23Expo John Lasseter gave us a ton of information about everything coming down the pipeline for Pixar, and Disney Animation. But what I want to focus on is Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks The Internet. My favorite scene from everything we saw during his presentation was The Princess Scene. The Princess Scene includes all of the official Disney Princesses and we were treated with their appearances on stage as each of them came back to voice their parts.

Wreck-It Ralph 2

The Princess Scene

ANAHEIM, CA – JULY 14: (L-R) Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios John Lasseter, actors Paige O’Hara (Belle/BEAUTY AND THE BEAST), Irene Bedard (POCAHONTAS), Mandy Moore (Rapunzel/TANGLED), Auli’i Cravalho (MOANA), Sarah Silverman (Vanellope von Schweetz/RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET: WRECK-IT RALPH 2), Kristen Bell (Anna/FROZEN), Kelly Macdonald (Merida/BRAVE), Anika Noni Rose (Tiana/THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG), Linda Larkin (Jasmine/ALADDIN), and Jodi Benson (Ariel/THE LITTLE MERMAID) of RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET: WRECK-IT RALPH 2 took part today in the Walt Disney Studios live action/animation presentation at Disney’s D23 EXPO 2017 in Anaheim, Calif. RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET: WRECK-IT RALPH 2 will be released in U.S. theaters on November 21, 2018……….(name of talent) of (name of film) took part today in the Walt Disney Studios animation presentation at Disney’s D23 EXPO 2017 in Anaheim, Calif. We saw some footage, The Princess Scene, from Wreck-It Ralph and it was hilarious. This Princess Scene from Ralph Breaks The Internet has Vanellope who has decided to give the princesses, all the Disney Princesses voiced by the original actresses, a hard time. Right after she sneaks into their room all the princesses turn on her in classic fighting moves. Then she tries to convince them that she’s a princess and that’s when you will start laughing and not stop until the scene is over. You will hear each princess practically break the third wall. They all say what we’ve thought about them for years. Bell admits to being held captive, Ariel wants to break out into song and everyone is annoyed. I mean, I can’t even properly give this scene it’s due credit trying to describe it to you. It was SO FREAKING good that as I was watching it, I was beginning to think it was a fake scene that won’t be in the final version of the movie. Would John Lasseter allow such humor against the precious Disney Princesses? I sure hope so and I have to say it’s about time!

This Princess Scene is Genius! I can’t wait for all of you to see it when Wreck-It Ralph 2 hits theaters November 21, 2018.

Just in case you want it here is the Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks The Internet Synopsis:

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ follow-up to 2012’s “Wreck-It Ralph” leaves the arcade behind, venturing into the expansive universe of the internet—which may or may not survive Ralph’s not-so-light touch. Outcasts-turned-BFFs Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and Vanellope von Schweetz are reuniting with Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer) and Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch). Filmmakers revealed a new character, Yesss, an algorithm who plays an important role in Ralph and Vanellope’s journey within the internet. Golden Globe®-winning actress Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”) lends her voice to the character. “Yesss is a new character who owns the website Buzzaholic,” said Henson. “Yesss knows about everything cool and on trend. And she does spell her name with a triple ‘s.’ Yesss is very savvy, smart and sexy.”

Stay tuned we will bring you updates on Wreck-It Ralph 2 as we receive them.

March 1, 2013 by Momstart 1 Comment

I Made Wreck-It Ralph Dance: Disney Animation Studios Let Me Play With Maya #WreckItRalph

February 27, 2013 by Momstart 7 Comments

It was my dream as a little girl to be an animator. I’ve always loved to draw and I’ve been into computers for as long as I can remember which is why I majored in Computer Science with an Art Emphasis in college. I played with all kinds of media, water color, oil and sketches and on the tech side, I learned programming and Photoshop. Some of my college friends had a copy of Maya which is a super cool software package that’s MEGA expensive. I tried to dabble in it but failed and gave up. Then on my most recent Press day at Disney Animation Studios, they gave me a lesson and let me play with Wreck-It Ralph’s body.

 IMG_3687

So by using Maya, I made him dance. They showed me that with a few shortcut keys I can move different parts of his body in different directions. Clicking brought up some nodes and then I could pick and make slight changes and then I got to watch my work. I LOVED IT. Check out my Ralph dancing:

IMG_3684

We did spend the day learning about other things, like digital download that comes with movies. It’s super easy with your DisneyMovieRewards account. If you don’t have one. GET ONE. We also had the opportunity to see the transitions of Ralph. I think I showed you guys that in an older post, but had to bring it up because some of the deleted scenes (and transitions of Ralph) are expected to be on the Blu-ray DVD Combo Pack of Wreck-It Ralph.

It’s with great anticipation that I’m awaiting the Blu-ray DVD Combo Pack of Wreck-It Ralph to come out so I can relive all those sugar filled moments.

Disney’s WRECK-IT RALPH Motion Camera Capture video, The Rigging Process

February 16, 2013 by Momstart 6 Comments

I love the tech behind animation, while I was at Disney Animation Studios this week I was able to play with Maya. I LOVE the Maya software, I played with it a brief amount during college and having a professional animator at my disposal was so helpful and made my day. Then after that we were taken into a room where we learned all about the rigging process. A director or someone that doesn’t know the technical aspects of animation or maybe he does know it but just wants to show someone how to change the camera view can use the rigging process. Check out this video of me walking through a scene of Wreck It Ralph while playing with the rigging cameras.

IMG_3690

So they set up a box with tape with cameras all around to create a virtual box that can become a set. With all the cameras they create a virtual world and place some objects with tracking balls on them and you can use that to change the view within the virtual world. It’s like taking an armature and using it to animate a model, usually a human like model to animate the model. the armature isn’t rendered but the model moving is.IMG_3691 IMG_3694IMG_3688IMG_3695

It’s amazing and I might not be describing it correctly but it really is amazing.

Want to keep up with all Wreck It Ralph updates? Check out the Wreck It Ralph website then Make sure your following Wreck It Ralph on Twitter and you “Like” the Wreck It Ralph Fan Page. Wreck It Ralph is now available via digital download however the Blu-ray and DVD Combo Packs will be out on March 5th!

Watching Wreck-It Ralph is Color-Sweetastic: Movie Review

October 30, 2012 by Momstart 13 Comments

Wreck-It Ralph is so good I’m pre-buying tickets to see it opening weekend. I saw Wreck-It Ralph almost two months ago and I loved it. It’s full of color, imagination, and humor. You know Ralph, he’s every man’s man. He goes to work every day, never appreciated always forgotten and he’s tired of it. He’s actually even considered the bad guy, when it’s just his job, he’s a “bad guy, but not a bad guy”.

GAME CENTRAL STATION -- Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly)—tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix, Jr. (voice of Jack McBrayer), the "good guy" star of their game—sets off on a quest to prove he's got what it takes to be a hero. His arcade-game-hopping journey kicks off at Game Central Station, an industrial power strip that serves as the central hub connecting every game in the arcade. In theaters Nov. 2, 2012, "Wreck-It Ralph" also features the voices of Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman. ©2012 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Next thing you know he’s gone turbo and left his game. While he’s away his game doesn’t work and is threatened to be shut down making him hated even more, all the while he’s just trying to prove that he can be a hero too. Where does Ralph go?

Ralph travels into two other worlds where they are completely different from his own. His own world is quite square, it’s a retro game that has somehow survived 30 years. He enters the world of Hero’s Duty where the world is very triangular and sharp. It’s like stepping into Halo where the visuals are amazing and the characters are scary inside and out. Even the woman in charge seems to have no heart, but that’s the key to her back story.

"WRECK-IT RALPH" (Pictured) SERGEANT CALHOUN (voice of Jane Lynch) in the video game world of Hero's Duty. ©2012 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

He then collects what he thinks will make him a Hero, the prize medallion that he loses in Sugar Rush. I’m leaving some of the major plot details out so you’ll feel that you need to go watch the movie, and here’s the key question, why would he go into Sugar Rush after getting his prize? Why would that grumpy old man want to go into the world of swirls of color? Maybe you should ask, What went wrong in Hero’s Duty? All Questions to think about, as I was watching Wreck-It Ralph, I was surprised to find out how much Hero’s Duty was a part of the movie. Seemed to me that all the movie was going to be about at first was Vanellope and Ralph. They are quite the humorous pair as they banter back and fourth with each other, and it’s interesting to know that most of their humor was ad-libbed.  As they antagonize each other they find out how much in common they have and forge an unlikely friendship that ends up saving the day.

Wreck_It_Ralph_EW_Exclusive_RGB-7

I highly recommend this movie and will be going to see it on Saturday with my four and five year old. It’s so colorful and playful, and sweet and fantastic. So saddle up kids, get turbo and wreck it this weekend as Wreck-It Ralph smashes into theaters Friday.

Disney’s Amazing Short Paperman Review & Interview With Kristina Reed

October 30, 2012 by Momstart 10 Comments

Paperman is a short Produced by Kristina Reed.

IMG_0148 r.jpg

About Producer Kristina Reed:

I produced a short that is lucky enough to be the one that’s going to run in front of Wreck-It Ralph. And Disney hasn’t put a short in front of a movie in quite a while. We’re really just thrilled that it’s getting the attention it’s getting. I first came to Disney in 2008. I came from DreamWorks. Where I was the head of production. And at the time, we had Princess and the Frog going on, a hand drawn film. And we were working on Tangled, the CG film. And we were having a lot of conversations among the executives why we had separated our hand drawn talent from our CG talent. It was like being in two different businesses and neither business was quite as smooth as we wanted it to be. We asked ourselves Is there some new place we can go visually that– that no studio has gone before? And John Kahrs came forward and pitched this project, Paperman.

MORNING COMMUTE - In "Paperman," a young man in mid-century New York City has a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his morning commute. The innovative animated short from first-time director John Kahrs makes its theatrical debut in front of "Wreck-It Ralph" on Nov. 2, 2012. ©2012 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Since I had been pounding on the table and saying there’s more. There’s more to this. We’re not thinking about it the right way. Everyone sort of turned to me and said you produce this one. I was thrilled to do it. John Kahrs was reverse commuting, and he was working at Blue Sky, which is out in the suburbs of New York. And everyday he’d be traveling through Grand Central Station as a single guy in his 20’s. And there’d be throngs of people moving through the train stations. And he would be thinking to himself, why am I not having a more happy life? Like, I’m a single guy in New York City. I should be on top of the world. And yet I feel really rather lonely. And every once in a while, he’d make a connection with somebody, eye contact in the station and think is that the girl of my dreams? And then she’d be gone.

image

It all began with the morning commute. Imagine yourself in a mundane world where you pass by so many people every day and never know who they are. You do your job day in and day out and one day during your morning commute the wind disturbs your normalcy and drives you to do something you would never do. This man met a girl and realized that he didn’t get her information. Then by chance he saw her working across the street from her and does everything to get her attention. The animation is amazing as it’s a combination of CGI with hand drawn brush strokes, making it look so simple and beautiful while actually being complex. It’s kind of like taking you into how simple it can be to meet someone through the world of business that we are so accustomed to.

More from Kristina Reed:

‘Paperman’ to put something on the table in that direction, and we’re hoping that Disney and other studios and artists will continue the conversation about how different animation can look. It’s virtually limitless.

“John and I both come from CG backgrounds,” continues Reed. “When we came to Disney, we discovered the power of the line, its expressiveness and what our great 2D line artists can do. It inspired us to think about where could go with this.”

“Paperman” had its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on June 4, where it received a resounding reception from animators and critics from around the world. It went on to further acclaim with its North American premiere two weeks later at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
