Play Maleficent Free Fall on Windows & Windows Phone #MaleficentEvent

May 16, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Disney launched its official Maleficent Free Fall app for Windows and Windows Phone this week. This is ahead of the May 30 movie premiere and is available for download in the Windows and Windows Phone

image

It looks a lot like the Frozen game that my kids love to play but instead of being Elsa or Anna you get to be Maleficent and there’s a little more to it. Maleficent Free Fall takes the match-3 fun of Frozen Free Fall but with a “dark” twist. You begin the game as a young Maleficent and journey through the map to explore her untold story, unlock her raven, Diaval and discover other mysterious surprises. You switch and slide the board of enchanted gemstones to create matches of 3 or more as you trigger cascading combos and conquer original objectives. As Maleficent, you use her green magic to instantly vanish the same color gemstones. You can also call upon Diaval to swoop down and rearrange the board, or cast tendrils of thorns to clear entire row and columns. And as you play, you unlock more unique power-ups and experience Maleficent’s fierce desire for revenge.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss Birthday with Windows 8.1 Apps #WindowsChampions

March 5, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, I wanted to find some apps that you could also find for Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 that also celebrate the birthday of our favorite cat. I found five apps that are great for you and your child to get into the world of Dr. Seuss.

The Cat In The Hat:

image

On a cold and wet day, two children are visited by a mischievous cat, wearing a tall, red and white-striped hat. To entertain the children, the Cat performs wacky tricks, creating a mess of the house.  Will mother find out about the Cat and see the mess?
"I know some good games we could play,"
Said the cat
"I know some new tricks,"
Said the Cat in the Hat.…

    The Lorax:
    image

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not,” proclaims The Lorax in this cautionary tale of greed and environmental destruction. The story recounts how the Lorax tries to save the Truffula Forest and its inhabitants from disaster at the hands of an insatiable factory owner. The Lorax’s pleas are ignored and tragedy follows. A Dr. Seuss classic, it also serves as an ecological warning that st…

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish

    image

"Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?"
Such are the profound questions posed in this well-loved Dr. Seuss classic. Through his rhymes and riddles, Seuss’s intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. From a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads, children will be entranced–so a…

Green Eggs and Ham – Dr. Seuss

    image

"Would you eat them in a box? Would you eat them with a fox?"
This timeless Dr. Seuss classic has been delighting readers since 1960. Sam-I-am never gives up  trying to convince his friend that green eggs and ham are a tasty treat. He tries everything – in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, with a goat, on a boat – to no avail. Then finally, finally his friend caves in… and tries them.  And guess what? "I…

I’m a Windows Champion an ambassador for Microsoft and when I see deals like this I have to share them with you. I do occasionally receive products to review as an ambassador.

FYI, for those you out there looking for some decent games for your Surface or Windows Phone, Disney has made several of their titles free for a limited time. Some of these I already have and my kids love. The one they love the most I think is Where’s My Perry!

So what are you waiting for, load up your Kid Zone, and tablets  today! (Kids Zone is a great way to let your kids play on your phone and it’s completely protected)

How TO Take a Screenshot in Windows 8.1 #windowschampions

October 9, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Disclosure: I’m a Windows Champion and receive products to review.

Whenever I use Windows and I need to take a screen shot I’ve been using the Snipping Tool. However, with the introduction of  Windows 8 I found that I could only using the snipping tool within the desktop portion of the operating system. So how does one take a screen shot in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 without using the Snipping tool?

To take a screen shot you will hit the Windows Start Key and the Print Screen button (PrtSc) Screenshot (2)

The screen will go dark and then you will find a new screen shot in the screen shots folder inside of the pictures folder that is located in your libraries.

Then I did a search using the search charm and took a picture of my results. Because once you are using the search charm you are in the app portion of operating system.

    Screenshot (1)

So I love this, because now when I’m reviewing an app like my favorite app fotor, I can do a tutorial by taking screen shots.

Share Save and Do More With SkyDrive #WindowsChampions

July 25, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

I’m a Microsoft Windows Champion and they share information with me and it’s my job to pass it on to you. My husband and I use SkyDrive a lot, I’ve been using it for years actually. I have tons of my blog photos shared there, giving me more hard drive space locally on my computer. I can create slide shows or embed files like pdf documents directly into my blog posts. I love it, it makes my job (mommy blogger) that much easier. Plus, with Windows 8, I love how SkyDrive is integrated as a place I can directly save to when I’m creating documents. Then I can also use SkyDrive on any device. There are apps for Android and iOS where I can share my files and have access to them no matter where I am or whose device I’m using. Here’s more information for you guys about how to FULLY use SkyDrive to your benefit……..

    image

    Do more with SkyDrive!

SkyDrive is Microsoft’s personal cloud storage service, providing over 250 million customers with access to their files, photos and documents across all of their devices and platforms, including Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox, as well as Mac, iOS and Android devices. SkyDrive is directly integrated with Microsoft Office and lets users edit and collaborate on Office documents from any computer with the free Office Web Apps. To put it simply, with SkyDrive you can store more than 7k photos or 14k Office documents in the cloud for free! Harrison Hoffman from the SkyDrive team joined the Windows Champions a few weeks ago to show off how the tool works. Below are a few of his personal tips:

    1. Share photos and files on SkyDrive.com

o Upload your files to your SkyDrive. (Files can be up to 2 GB in size, depending on how you upload them.)

o Select the item you want to share.

o Choose Sharing, and then decide how you want to share.

§ By email. When you share files this way, recipients will be able to see them when they go to SkyDrive.com and choose Shared. And you’ll be able to remove permissions for individual people later if you need to.

§ On Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and more—you can share SkyDrive files with any contact or network you’ve connected to your SkyDrive account.

§ With a link (handy if you want to copy and paste into an instant message or webpage).

§ After you share a file or folder, you can change its permissions if you need to. Just select it, and then choose Sharing. You can remove permissions to stop sharing the item, or, depending on how you shared the item, you can change whether people are allowed to edit the item.

    2. Fetch Files from your PC

o Fetch files from your Windows PC remotely (from a separate Windows PC), even if they’re not saved to your SkyDrive account, as long as it’s connected to the Internet. To turn on fetch, right-click the SkyDrive desktop icon (clip_image001) in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar. (You might need to click Show hidden icons first to see the icon.) Then click  Settings, and then check the Let me use SkyDrive to fetch any of my files on this PC option.

    3. Embed files directly into your website or blog

o If you have a website or blog, it’s quick and easy to embed photos, videos, Office documents, and other files from SkyDrive. You can even customize how embedded Excel workbooks appear to other people.

§ Select the file you want to embed.

§ Click Embed, and then click Generate.

§ Copy and paste the code into the code of your website or blog.

For more information, check out the Windows Experience blog or follow SkyDrive on Twitter!

Windows 8 Fotor App Complete Photo Editing Power #WindowsChampions

    June 6, 2013 by Momstart 1 Comment

Last month I spent some in depth time with Microsoft at a Press Event where we learned quite a bit about using Windows 8 and how there are quite a few apps worth checking out. The apps that interested me the most will pump up the volume in my photo editing skills. Last week I showed you an app called Adobe Photoshop Express, and this week I want to share with you the Windows 8 Fotor App, it’s free.

With Fotor you can create collages and priceless photos with the greatest of ease. To make a collage all you have to do is open the app and then choose the photos you want in your collage. Keep the number of photos small, if you go too large Fotor will tell you that you’ve selected too many fotos. For my first collage I kept it simple and only selected six photos. I used some photos from my press trip to Arizona for the Bloggers Go Girls. If I wanted to share it all I have to do is slide over from the right of the screen and the share charm will pop up and then I have my options of how to share it on-line. EASY!

    Bloggers Go Collage

Switching out photos and moving them to different frames within the college was so easy, and since Windows 8 is all touch you can do it all with your fingers, or a combination of the keyboard and touch screen. With editing photos, this app is amazing and so much more impressive than instagram. I made this photo of my daughter just by pumping up the color a little, adding a boarder and a little text.

girls just want to have fun

Then I took a picture of myself and used the Effects and a few of the scenes to create these looks.

    The original photo:

    IMG_0150

Angel’s Kiss, B&W Comics, and Concrete Wall.

    Angel's KissB&W ComicsConcrete Wall

Within the Black and White photo options there were about five different ways to turn your photo black and white. I chose the B&W Comics, because I liked how it made the light on my face look, I found it to be perfect out of the options.

These photos are Cool Blue, Cool Summer and Dawn Light

    Cool BlueCool SummerDawn Light

And these photos are Deep Blue, Kraft Paper, and Mini Oven

     Deep BlueKraft PaperMini Oven

Some of the photos look so similar and it’s amazing how the lighting and color changes the feeling of the photo. I love this app because it’s so easy to edit in so many different ways and I can add text with different fonts and colors and it even has pop up windows that I can put the text in. You could use the Fotor app to create your own comic book stories.

The final six looks from top left to bottom right are nostalgic, my own creation using a combination of scenes and Nostalgic, Sepia glow, sparta, Vintage, and yellow wash. I think my favorites are these bottom six. The combinations of what you can do with a photo with Fotor is endless because like my own creation, you can change the degree of each effect, and then the hue, saturation, lighting, contrast. The Fotor app really does give moms endless creativity with photos.

One Photo Countless Expressions: Adobe Photshop Express Windows 8 app #WindowsChampions

May 29, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

As a Windows Ambassador today we had our monthly webinar and they showed me a brand new app and I downloaded it right away. Then I had to share it with you, this is what I did…..

Today I’m using this photo of a Pineapple tree because I wish I was somewhere warm enough where a Pineapple tree would grow. I tried to do it here in WA state and it molded. Sigh, so I’m playing with a new app from Windows 8, it’s the Adobe Photoshop Express and it’s kind of like instagram because you can punch a photo with a different expression and share it on Facebook. I’m sure you’ll be able to use the share charm to more than just Facebook soon enough. So there is my original photo.

Adobe Photoshop Express Features on Windows 8

    • Basics: Crop, straighten, rotate, and flip your photos. Remove red eye.
    • Auto-Fix: One-touch adjustment for brightness, exposure and shadows.
    • Color: Slider controls for exposure, contrast, clarity, vibrance and more.

Just looking at all my photos that is basically one shot is fascination. I find myself wishing I was in south Florida right now, especially since I look out the window at the gloomy clouds. The Adobe Photoshop Express app allows you to add and change the color, hues, and intensity of the photo, it’s quick and easy to use. You can find photos from your computer or skydrive and then you can edit them and then upload them to Facebook. You can also use the camera on your device to take the photo too. I love photo apps like this one.

The Windows Phone 8 – The Easiest to Use Interface If You Ask Me #WindowsChampions

    March 14, 2013 by Momstart 1 Comment

The Windows Phone 8 – The Easiest to Use Interface If You Ask Me

    By: Ashley

It always seem like things happen all at once. Your appliances all break down at the same time, or everyone gets a cold bug, or, like what just happened with my family, everyone’s phone fizzles out at the same time. That just happened to my mom. I should start out by saying that my mom is a pretty young mom to have a kid as old as I am! She’s in her late forties and had being a Droid for a couple of years. A couple of months ago, it started to act up: missing text messages, not receiving phone calls, the normal “phone dying” symptoms. That’s when I got the call. image

“Don’t you have a Windows phone?” my mom called and asked me. I was happy to say that yes I had enjoyed my Windows 7 phone for awhile. (Granted I was also in the phone market because my OWN phone was starting to fizzle out, but that’s a whole different story…) She started to ask me questions about how they worked and what I liked and didn’t like. The first thing I told her was that it was an extremely intuitive phone. While I haven’t personally owned a Win8 Phone, I know that the operating system Microsoft uses on their phones is super user friendly. I love how everything you want is right there on the home screen. With both iPhones and Droids, getting to your contacts and seeing updates from your closest friends and family members is a multi-step process. With a Windows 8 phone, it’s all right there.

I would actually go so far as to say, there is no other phone that allows you the high level of personalization that Win8 Phones do. You can have a ton of apps and programs on your phone but only fill your home screen with those you need regularly.

A few of the things that I didn’t like about my old Windows 7 phone have actually been fixed and upgraded. The camera on the new Windows 8 phone (Nokia Lumina 822) 8MP Auto Focus Rear–Facing camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar® Lens and Dual–LED Flash. There’s also now front facing camera! Now, I’ll be able to let my son Skype with his “Granny” using the phone! With links to SkyDrive, Hot Spot capabilities, and SO much more, I can honestly say that the Windows 8 Phones are something I can (and have) recommended to friends and family.

It’s true that Microsoft is still working to build a stronger ecosystem with social apps, and I’m really hoping they get there. After doing some browsing through the apps available, and having spent a lot of time with my own Win7 phone, there are still enough apps to do what you need to do.

It’s been almost a month now, and my mom is pretty in love with her Windows8 Nokia Lumina 822. Now I just need to get her to come visit so I can play with it!

Feeding The Fitbit Addiction On Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 #WindowsChampion

    March 13, 2013 by Momstart 1 Comment

This is a really hard thing for me to admit to but yes, I’m addicted to my Fitbit. I received my Fitbit just a little over two months ago and I’ve been challenging myself for a while to find a day where I could get 15,000 steps in. On most days I’m lucky to get in only 3000 steps. I sit on the couch a lot working from my laptop. Because I’m at the couch all day for the first few weeks it was very hard to find ways to get over 5,000. I would take a nap instead of going to the gym. As I’ve found myself getting to 5000 lately and 10,000 on occasion, I was quite proud of myself when I reached 15,000 yesterday. Each time you reach a new goal you earn a badge and you can set your account to share on Facebook tweet out your badges and daily accomplishments. (I’m not so fond of it sharing with the world how lazy and in active I am most of the time) But I’m still addicted because it gets me moving more.

    image

Fitbit is on Windows 8, it’s an app that you can download and use on your desktop. From the app you can sync manually but you don’t have it. It seems that as long as you have the fitbit dongle plugged in it will sync automatically whenever you are near it. When using the app sometimes I have to bump the fitbit to wake it up

    image

Then I can go to Fitbit.com and find out all about my stats. If I had more time I could find out how to manage my eating. I could also find out my sleeping habits if I purchased their newer device the wireless sleepband, which I might just do. I already have the scale that connects wirelessly to the network. It’s so cool to track all my exercise and like I said before, I have to challenge myself just to get to 5000 steps a day with the ultimate goal being 10,000 steps a day.

Today was actually an active day because I went to the Gym this morning and you can see that by my steps I’ve already taken today. I’m at 9,000. WOOT!  Fitbit is also on Windows Phone 8 (at least sort of), a few different developers have written their own versions. Let me tell you what I think of them so far.

That’s the Fitbit Companions version I can’t even log into it.

Fitbit Companion allows Fitbit tracker users to access statistics about your activity. This app supports viewing your tracker- and body details (activity, sleep, body, devices). It allows you to get some details for a specific date or gain some more perspective using historical data. You can also log activities, sleep, body weight and body fat percentage. A fitbit device is not needed to use this app. It can also be used to track activities, sleep and body details. This application is NOT an official Fitbit application, but is created by a fan. It uses the official Fitbit API and doesn’t share your personal information outside of this application.

The DotNetNuzzi Fitbit Tracker works quite well. You can add water, food, exercise and weight. works much better!

The DotNetNuzzi WP7 Fitbit Activity Tracker helps you view your activities, food, water, and weight entries wherever you are to assist with tracking your progress towards your goals. The Fitbit family of products motivate you to stay active, live better, and reach your goals. The Fitbit app enables you to view graphs of your activity levels, sleep and weight and gives you a clear picture of your health and fitness trends. You can stop by select Microsoft Stores to see devices, learn about the app and get hands on with Windows 8.
