Whole Grain Vegetable Sandwich Recipe

July 8, 2011 by Momstart 3 Comments

As an ambassador for Arnold/Brownberry/Oroweat, I wanted to share with you a new product that’s perfect for creating a healthy summer sandwich. Just in time for summer, comes new Arnold/Brownberry/Oroweat Nutty Grain Health-full Bread. This not-quite-diet bread has big, bold nutty flavor that will help your readers keep their bodies bathing suit-ready without sacrificing on size or taste. Typical diet breads are 40- to 50-calories a slice and half the size of regular bread. Health-full is 80 calories a slice, yet the same size as regular bread – which in general is 110 to 120 calories a slice!  And more, Nutty Grain is an excellent source of fiber, has 8g of whole grain per slice and 5g of protein to help satisfy your hunger.

Ingredients

· 4 slices Arnold/Brownberry/Oroweat Nutty Grain Health-full Bread
· 1 avocado, mashed
· 1 tomato, sliced
· 1 small cucumber, sliced
· 1/4 c. Spanish onion, thinly sliced
· 2 tsp. light mayonnaise
· Sea salt and pepper, to taste

Serving size: 2 sandwiches

Directions

Evenly spread the mashed avocado on two slices of bread and lightly sprinkle with salt and pepper. Spread one teaspoon mayonnaise on each of the remaining two slices of bread. Add the tomato, cucumber and onion to make two sandwiches. Serve immediately.

Celebrate Taco Tuesday with SpongeBob Oretega Taco Night

February 23, 2011 by Momstart 255 Comments

We have Taco night, or taco salad about once a week. It’s an easy way for me to fix beef that the kids will eat it without question. Ortega sent us a SpongeBob Taco Night set that made taco night even more fun!

image

Taco night is one of my favorite nights food wise. I just love to eat Mexican food of any kind and tacos are so easy to make. You brown the ground beef add the Taco seasoning mix, Simmer and The Whole Grain Corn Ortega Taco Kit comes with everything you need. In fact, it comes with some extra fun!

imageInside the SpongeBob Whole Grain Corn Ortega Taco Kit comes SpongeBob Taco Holders which were Zoe’s favorite part I might add. The night I made Taco Salad instead of Taco’s she almost lost it because she knew she couldn’t use her SpongeBob Taco Holder. You know to tell you the truth, I’m not even sure shy SpongeBob is so exciting to her, she’s never seen it, but I’ve heard other parents say the same thing. So Ortega is genius in getting the SpongeBob cartoon as a mascot of the, Kids everywhere love him no matter how much knowledge of him they have.

Get your kids involved in making their own tacos by letting them pick their stuffing! My kids love black olives, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and taco sauce (which is also included in the taco kit). It’s a great way to introduce healthy options and incorporate all of the food groups in one meal.

Ortega sent me a few more ways to share with you on how to have a healthy and successful taco night:

· Try a new and healthy taco recipe, such as Easy Oven Soft Chicken Tacos or Baja Fish Tacos. Both are great options for a delightful hot luncheon, after-school snack or dinner on cold winter days.

· Swap out corn taco shells for whole grain, such as Ortega Whole Grain Taco Shells. These taco shells are rich with flavor and texture and offer the fiber and complex carbohydrates your body needs.

· Ditch the salt! Use low sodium taco seasoning, such as Ortega 40% Less Sodium Taco Seasoning.

You Asked Sara Lee Listened, No High Fructose Corn Syrup Bread #Giveaway

August 29, 2010 by Momstart 342 Comments

Sara Lee S&S 100% Whole Wheat and Whole Grain White Last year I went to the nutrition summit with Sara Lee. There I learned about nutrition and feeding my family. I don’t believe that High Fructose Corn Syrup is bad for you, but I know from going to that event that it is an important factor for many of my readers and very close friends. Some of them will not eat food that has high fructose corn syrup added. Sara Lee heard your cries as well and now makes white and wheat bread without high fructose corn syrup. The major difference that I noticed was how soft the bread was. I’m sure that has nothing to do with anything, but it was something I wanted to be sure to mention!

Same great taste in my opinion!

Sara Lee Soft & Smooth Made with Whole Grain White Bread is now a good source of fiber and contains 10 grams of whole grain per 2-slice serving. Also, Sara Lee Soft & Smooth 100% Whole Wheat Bread now gives consumers vitamin D, as well as an excellent source of calcium and whole grain with 26 grams per two-slice serving.

IMG_4337 Sara Lee sent me two loaves of bread so that I could try it out. They also sent me a Bento box with a coupon for another loaf of bread. These are both for me to donate to charity. I’m quite excited about using it as a donation and that I got to see what exactly get to giveaway to one lucky reader.

For Back To School ideas check out Sara Lee’s Facebook page. For more information about Sara Lee Soft & Smooth bread, bun and bagel products visit www.youknowwhattheylike.com

I’m In Chicago and not for BlogHer, I’m here with Sara Lee’s Nutrition Summit

July 22, 2009 by MomStart 2 Comments

Tonight I’m going to be eating out on Sara Lee’s dime and I’m really excited about it. I’m going to be meeting some new bloggers and seeing some I met two weeks ago. It’s not as exciting and crazy as BlogHer but, it’s much more intimate.

clip_image002Tomorrow I’m going to be learning about Sara Lee’s Soft and Smooth bread made with Whole Grain. Everyone and their dog is talking about “Whole Grain”. It’s like the new marketing buzz word in healthy food. Pop Tarts are made out of whole grain now, so what’s the deal?

What is Whole Grain?

So grain, all grains rather, have three parts: the bran (which is the protective outer shell, high in fiber and B vitamins), germ (Which is the seed for a new plant, containing B vitamins, some protein, minerals and healthy oils) and endosperm (Which is composed of starch, protein, and some vitamins and minerals).

wholegrainWhole grains or foods made from them contain all three and
naturally-occurring nutrients of the entire grain seed. Verses what we are used to enriched (”white”) flour and it contains only the endosperm, while whole grain flour contains extra protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals that are found only in the bran and germ.

The following are considered whole grains:
Amaranth, Barley (lightly pearled), Brown and Colored Rice, Buckwheat, Bulgur, Corn and Whole Cornmeal, Emmer, Farro, Grano (lightly pearled wheat), Kamut® grain, Millet, Oatmeal and Whole Oats, Popcorn, Quinoa, Sorghum, Spelt, Triticale, Whole Rye, Whole or Cracked Wheat, Wheat Berries, and Wild Rice.

But remember to really be whole grain it has to have all three parts of the grain.
