Holiday Food Brings About Holiday Stains: Here’s How to Defeat the Stain

December 8, 2012 by Momstart 11 Comments

We’re still enjoying our Whirlpool duet washing machine and dryer. A year later the only thing we notice is that they use a bit more water than our previous washer and dryer use but we’re still happy with them and they get the stains out. Speaking of stains, it’s the holiday season and baking, cooking and eating are at the top of everyone’s lists. The kids love cranberry sauce and I love red wine, both are notorious for leaving red stains on everything they touch.

I usually try to make the child stain proof which fails me every time, I mean can you imagine keeping a four year old boy’s clothing clean? It’s impossible without help!

IMG_0043

He’s always eating

and spilling

These are his holiday clothes

IMG_0236

and so far so good no stains yet. Whirlpool has shared some tips with me that I want to share with you. The main one is that I pretreat everything. My husband does a better job than I do and that’s one reason why I’m so happy he’s in charge of the laundry. Here’s those tips, keep your holiday clothes looking clean and stain free!

First rule of thumb, read the care label. After that, follow the instructions below.

· Cranberry sauce slip off the spoon? Remove any excess fruit from the cotton and run the fabric under cold water to prevent oxidation. Wash the garment in the warmest water safe for it.  Use your bleach dispenser or add liquid chlorine bleach or color-safe bleach during the rinse cycle, after your detergent has done its job.

· Turkey a bit too juicy? Apply a pretreat to the oily stain, or rub liquid detergent directly into it. Wash the garment in the hottest water safe for the fabric, then air dry and check it for any remaining stain. If necessary, repeat the procedure before placing the clothing in the dryer.

· Overflow from the gravy boat? Scrape off any remaining gravy with a spoon or back of a butter knife. If it has already dried, brush off the residue. Rub in liquid detergent and then soak the fabric in a mixture of detergent and water for up to 30 minutes. Finish by washing the garment in the warmest water safe for it.

Whirlpool Duet Still Simplifies Our Lives

September 10, 2012 by Momstart 18 Comments

Remember over a year ago I received a brand new washing machine and dryer from Whirlpool and they are still going strong and saving me time. Currently they are saving me even more time because my husband likes them so much he’s doing the laundry. He even instituted a new laundry procedure that keeps the laundry off my couch and clean and put away where it belongs.

image

Want to know the rules?

Clothing must be put in the laundry room – the kids have to put their laundry in the laundry room. He does try to find their clothes but my daughter just learned yesterday that if she doesn’t put her clothes in the laundry room they won’t get clean. She wanted to wear one of her new dresses today to school and she couldn’t because she never put it in the laundry room. Saves me time because their rooms are cleaner and I don’t have to remind them.

Sorting Clothes depends on who does laundry – my husband and I both sort laundry differently. I do purple pink and red, blue green and gray, jeans and whites while everything else falls into one of those categories. My husband does bright colors. reds darks jeans whites towels and light colors. He does much more sorting than I do and guess what, the machine has settings for both of us.

From the Washer to the Dryer – once laundry begins you must make sure it goes from the washing machine to the dryer. The good thing is that this washing machine, The Whirlpool duet, has a keep fresh setting so if you can’t get to it right away the washer keeps it fresh so you don’t have to rewash, saving about an hour and a half of time.

From the Dryer to away – His best rule yet. If you start a load you finish it, fold it and put it away. He’s amazing at doing it and told me that if I decide to help I have to follow the rules and I’ve been following the rules. It’s been so wonderful, now I don’t have to spend a Saturday on the couch having a laundry folding fest with the whole family.

So the key message is organization simplifies my life. I wonder if someone could help me get organized in other areas of my life as well.

How do your appliances simplify your life?

Do Not Wash Pull Ups in Your Whirlpool Duet Washing Machine

January 9, 2012 by Momstart 11 Comments

HA! I’m sure this is something that doesn’t even need to be said out loud right? Do Not Wash Pull Ups, diapers, pads of any kind in Your Whirlpool Duet Washing Machine or in any washing machine for that matter. At least my Whirlpool Duet Washing machine had the Clean Washer cycle where I could drop in an Affresh tablet and clean it before resuming the laundry.

Whirlpool Clean Washer Cycle

My adorable son is no longer wearing diapers, in face he’s even out of pull ups. Until a week ago he was only wearing them at night, now he’s not wearing them at all. When he was wearing them he was pretty good about putting them in the trash can every morning when he changed into his underwear. Sometimes I would find them in the floor of his room and I’d have to remind him that they go in the trash can.

Now, I go to do laundry and I sorted all of the laundry. I sort by whites, denim, pinks orange and red, and then blues greens and yellows. I did laundry as I normally would. I loaded up the blue, set the machine to wash the clothes and walked away. I actually forgot that night to move them over to the dryer which is ok because the washing machine has a keep fresh setting. That morning I remember that I need to move the clothes over. I open the washing machine door and find some gooey gunk falling off of the washing machine door. Oh, I think to myself, I must have forgotten to empty a pocket. Then I look in the machine and I see it EVERYWHERE. It was disgusting. Gooey beaded up gunk all over the clothes. Gooey messy stuff all over the rim, the door the sides of the machine. YUCK!!!!

I started pulling out the clothes and inside I found the guilty culprit. The last Pull Up he wore ended up in my washing machine. I wanted to yell at him, but it wasn’t his fault mommy put it in the washing machine. He was the good boy that picked up his clothing and put it in the laundry room. He just forgot to separate his pull up from his pants. So I had to close the laundry room door and yell at myself as I shook out all the laundry and prepared it for an Affresh cycle. At least after the machine cleaned itself I was able to resume laundry without too much work.

SIGH!!!!

Whirlpool Celebrates 100th Anniversary Fun Facts

November 11, 2011 by Momstart 4 Comments

So far my entire experience with the Whirlpool Duet Washer and Dryer has been nothing but spectacular. It’s washed and dried clothes with no problem at all. As I’m wrapping up this campaign with Whirlpool, it’s also Whirlpool’s 100th Anniversary this year and they shared some fun facts with us. I’ve listed them all here for you and we’re highlighting a few of our favorites.

image

In 1916, Upton Machine Company sells its first order of washers to Sears, Roebuck & Co.— beginning a long business relationship.

image

In 1921: Sears loans the Upton Machine Company $87,500 for a plant expansion—enabling the company
to build more washers. Then, in the years following World War II, the U.S. economy goes bust. Sears washer sales drop 65 percent—forcing them to cancel remaining orders. Upton Machine Company faces the crisis of being unable to repay the loan. However, the unique working relationship between both
companies forges a mutually satisfying agreement. Sears agrees to cancel the loan in exchange for shares of stock in the Upton Machine Company.

image

In 1938, Whirlpool Corporation (then the Nineteen Hundred Corporation) invents the first washer with motorized agitation, ushering in a new era of time savings and convenience.

image

In 1948, The Nineteen Hundred Corporation (Whirlpool Corporation) successfully launches the first Whirlpool® brand name automatic washing machine— transitioning the company from a manufacturer with one major trade customer (Sears) to launching its own branded appliances. Dual distribution—one line of products for Sears, another for The Nineteen Hundred Corporation under the Whirlpool® brand begins dual manufacturing and distribution— fundamental for future growth.

image

In 1957: Elisha “Bud” Gray’s marketing and brand strategy goals culminate in the launch of the RCA-Whirlpool® Miracle Kitchen—a wildly imaginative, futuristic and customer-relevant full-line solution
for the ultra-modern home. The innovative kitchen takes advantage of major developments in television and
transportation, traveling throughout the United States, Italy, Germany, Poland and Russia during the 1960s.

image

In 1967: Raytheon/Amana introduces the first countertop, domestic 100-volt microwave oven, which cost just under $500 and was smaller, safer and more reliable than previous models. The market expands, cooking becomes easier and under the Amana® name, Amana® Radarange® becomes the dominant
player in the home microwave oven business.

image

In 1969: Whirlpool Corporation introduces the residential trash compactor, the first totally new major home appliance to reach the marketplace in more than 30 years.

image

In 1977: Whirlpool Corporation reenters the microwave oven market by introducing four Whirlpool brand models. The company had marketed a microwave oven for a brief period in the late 1950s, but withdrew when it became apparent that the marketplace was not ready for this new concept in cooking.

image

In 1986: Whirlpool Corporation purchases the iconic KitchenAid® brand in an effort to expand the company’s brand portfolio and meet a broader segment of consumer needs around styling, endurance, performance and heritage. KitchenAid® was a business unit of Dart & Kraft— which had acquired KitchenAid’s original
parent, the Hobart Corporation in 1981.

image

In 1989: Appliance operations in the United States, Canada and Mexico are brought together to form the North American Appliance Group (NAAG).

image

image

In 1996: Whirlpool Corporation named as a founding member of Business Environment Leadership Council, an advisory group to Pew Center on Global Climate change. Whirlpool Corporation facilitates the
development of the appliance Green Lights Program, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency precursor to the ENERGY STAR® program.

image

In 2001, Whirlpool Corporation’s KitchenAid® brand partners with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to create the Cook for the Cure campaign.

image

In 2006: Strengthening its relationship with Habitat for Humanity, the company establishes Whirlpool Building Blocks program—designed to raise awareness and help eliminate substandard housing in the United States. In 2006, the program unites 100 local residents with 100 Whirlpool employees from 100 Habitat for Humanity affiliates. The 200 volunteers build 10 houses in one week. In 2007, 9 houses are built
near Phoenix, Arizona; in 2008, nine more are completed in Dallas, Texas; nine additional Atlanta, Georgia–area homes are built.

image

In 2010: Whirlpool Corporation debuts the $500 million Harbor Shores development, a social and economic development project aimed to promote Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Michigan. Project features Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, which will host the 2012 and 2014 Senior Professional Golf Association Championships.

Eureka The Jeans are Dry! #Whirlpoolmoms

August 30, 2011 by Momstart 17 Comments

I’m really really loving the Whirlpool Duet Washer and Dryer. As you may know, this month I changed out my old washer and dryer for a new Whirlpool Duet Washer and Dryer. My husband and I both quickly fell in love with them. They wash and dry our clothes quite well. You can read my love letters to our new appliances but I felt that I didn’t give the dryer enough love. Here’s why…

I was out of town and didn’t really get the chance to put the dryer to the test until now.

JEANS!!!

IMG_3530

We’ve had quite a few issues getting jeans dry. Our older dryer it would take us three tries to get the jeans dry. Yes you read that correctly, three tries. I would get tired of drying them and pull them out early and then my husband would tell me that his jeans were dirty. And I’d get upset because I just washed them. Well if they are damp at all when I hang them up, my husband can smell that.

The Whirlpool Duet DRIED them first try!

IMG_3529

I washed and dried 7 pairs of jeans and loved that they were dry. Which setting did I use? I used the jean setting as is. I didn’t change any of the preset settings on the jeans dryer cycle.

It’s almost been a full month and we still the Whirlpool Duet Washer & Dryer very much.

Dear Whirlpool Duet Washer & Dryer Welcome To Our Home

August 18, 2011 by Momstart 31 Comments

Dear Whirlpool Duet Washer,

My expectations were high and I was worried that I would find your color boring, but no you surprised me with your beautiful shine and luster. Your shiny silver exterior has won me over after all. Even with that fun surprise, what really won me over was your first load and I put you to the test.

IMG_2427

Our family went camping before you arrived and I didn’t get all of the laundry washed as I had hoped. When you were installed I looked inside you and thought, there is no way you’re going to be big enough inside to wash our sleeping bags.

IMG_2423

IMG_2429Your circumference is just a few inches smaller than your predecessor. As I was pitting you against all odds, shoving the sleeping bag into you, I figured I was setting you up. You surprised me. You even delighted me. I was even giddy as I found out how many setting you had, and as I started using past the first load, I found out you had even more secret settings (special pre-programmed cycles like the kids cycle) that I’ll have to blog about later.

 IMG_2421

For this first load, I selected bulky on the nob and then I picked cold/cold for the temperature and let you use all the rest of your preset settings as they were.

IMG_2430

I sat there like a kid in the candy store as I watched you squirt water and soap into your drum. I didn’t want to stand there for the entire hour so I went down stairs to await your grumbles and shakes. I was sure I overloaded you. You didn’t grumble at me, I was surprised, shocked even that you didn’t complain. You did however make more noise on start up and in spin dry mode. Perhaps that was one feature you just couldn’t live up to. Your predecessor was EXTRA quiet, compared to no sound at all you sound like a rocket taking off. (yes I’m exaggerating a little bit here but you just make more noise than our family is used to.) In time, you’ll be accepted for your noise because all your other outstanding features outweigh your let’s call it exuberance to clean. You did get the sleeping bag clean without complaining at me after all.

Dear Whirlpool Duet Dryer,

As my letter to our Whirlpool Duet Washing machine was quite long, I’ll keep your letter short and sweet. You were also tested with the large sleeping bag. Your insides are a bit more roomy as a dryer should be, so I threw the sleeping bag inside your drum and asked you to dry it. You almost completely dried it in one go. Can you see the shock on my face? No, I suppose you can’t, but I was very delighted to find that if I wanted, I could have just taken the sleeping back out and laid it flat to continue drying. The part that was still wet was you know in the center of the sleeping bag that had rolled itself up inside you as you were doing your job. You outdid your predecessor in one go. So only time will tell if you can keep up the good work.

PS. My husband loves you.

image

PPS. My husband loves you so much he left me a Facebook message on my wall about loving you.

PPS. I love you because you’re so much fun to play with that my husband has started doing laundry again.

Goodbye LG 4.5 Steam Washer & Dryer in Red

August 1, 2011 by Momstart 13 Comments

This month I became a Whirlpool mom, so before I post my first Whirlpool post, I wanted to say good bye to my friends the LG 4.5CF Front Load Steam Washer in Red and the red LG Steam Dryer. You served me mostly well. I think I was more in love with the color of you than your ability to wash and dry. No, I’m very pleased with your abilities. Whirlpool has a lot to live up to. I’m excited to share with they compare these coming months, but first, I must say good by to my two favorite toys in the house.

Dear Washer,

I have to say thank you for washing all of my clothing for the past two years. I loved how large your capacity was.  You faithfully cleaned the clothes and only grumped at me 3 or 4 times for being over loaded. I did have a tendency to overload you but you kept on chugging. You even washed that sleeping bag after we went camping. I’ve washed it many times before by hand in the bath tub and even in your predecessor, but it still always had dog hairs on it. And you my dear, got that sleeping bag clean for the first time ever.

IMG_2410

I loved your color.

I Loved your key features:

I loved your Allergiene™ Cycle which we used many times along with the sanitary care as well.
I loved your TrueSteam™ Technology
I loved your TrueBalance™ Anti-Vibration System
I loved your Ultra Large Capacity (4.5 cu.ft.)
I loved your SteamFresh™ Cycle
And I loved your Wash/Rinse Optimizer™ and 1300 RPM Spin Speed

I loved your color

Of all of these my favorite was of course your size I mean after your color. I really loved stuffing you full of clothes.

My only compliant with you would be that you were a smelly machine and very difficult to keep clean.

IMG_2416

And I always forgot to empty your water and boy did it smell.

IMG_2417

Dear Dryer,

Somewhere in the first year you lost the ability to dry properly. I’m not sure what went wrong and I probably could have called someone out to service you but why in the world would a 1500.00 appliance stop drying properly after the first. year. My husband thought it was only jeans that didn’t dry out, and we figured out a way to make you work, but then I started to notice you weren’t drying most loads properly. Maybe it’s because I put to many clothes in you at one time, but I just don’t know for sure. I think you should have had the power to do the job.

IMG_2413

But I did love your features too!

Of course I loved your 3.9 cu. ft. Capacity and 12 Wash Cycles
We loved  using your SteamFresh/Allergiene Cycles
I loved your 9 drying Options and your 1,200 RPM Spin Speed

I loved the ability to add time to a drying cycle while it was running. I loved being able to do the timed cycle on low heat. I loved all your options, and yes, I loved your color too.

Would I recommend these appliances?

Yes, truly I loved them. They were red, they were extremely quiet and used very little water.  I’m excited to be working with Whirlpool for the next six months writing about my new appliances. I even had to test them out right away.
