Melissa & Doug Wooden Workbench Gummy Lump Toy #Giveaway

November 9, 2010 by Momstart 514 Comments

imageGummy Lump is an on-line toy store, an on-line boutique high quality toy store. Many of the name brands they carry are from the top learning toy companies. They carry Alex, Crocodile Creek, Haba, and Schylling just to name a few. Last Year they generously donated a Puppet Theater to my toy drive. I’m collecting donations again this year because I feel that giving is very important for us to do. We’re very grateful for the donation last year.

imageThis year Gummy Lump sent us a Melissa & Doug Workbench and we decided it would be the perfect toy to review with Miles. To keep it though, Miles will need to go through some of his toys and help me decide what to donate the next time we do a donation. We make donations about every 3 months and this Holiday Season we will be doing another Toy Drive. Gummy Lump is a supporter of ours when it comes to charity. So we thank you Gummy Lump!

The Melissa & Doug Workbench Pretend and Play Set by Melissa & Doug usually retails for 99.99 but is currently 20.00 off of the regular price at Gummy Lump. The kids had a lot of fun with this set. Andrew put it all together, they started helping him but it was naptime before then finished. So he did the final work. He said that the quality is great and that it is quite a sturdy toy. After it was together the kids were able to enjoy it.

Not only can they pretend to play with the tools but they can build a few different items. The wooden pieces left over build an airplane, a helicopter, a robot or whatever the imagination can come up with. Miles and Zoe now know the name of all the tools and the difference between a nut and a bolt.

The Land of Nod Stand Mixer With Bowl #Giveaway

November 6, 2010 by Momstart 318 Comments

imageMom Start was chosen as a Land of Nod Review Blogger. So throughout the year we’ll be bringing you toy ideas for the holidays and what makes a great birthday present. The Land of Nod is beautiful retail store on-line and off. They have stores located here in Washington, and I’ve always loved walking in to look at the new things they have. Even when I was working in a store similar to them, I loved to see what they carried that we didn’t. I’m a big kid at heart!!

imageOur first feature, is the Land of Nod Wooden Stand Mixer with Bowl. Zoe has her own kitchen and she cooks in her kitchen whenever I’m making something to eat that she can’t help with. She loves to help me cook but if I’m in a hurry or using the oven mostly she can’t help me. So she’s quite happy to work in her own kitchen. I showed her the mixer and she was just jumping up and down to get to open it.

Details, details

  • Includes mixer, bowl, flour, flour bag, butter and butter bag

Show ’em what you’re made of

  • Made from sustainably sourced wood

Age range

  • image3 and up

The Stand Mixer is a cute green color and is very easy to operate. It came with a flour bag, a butter bag and little white and yellow balls that she can put in her mixer and in and out of the bags. Now, are new cute little dog Abby has decide that this is a fun toy too. When the kids dropped the balls on the kitchen floor Abby chased the balls up and down. Some of them are already lost underneath our kitchen stove.

Abby also patiently waits underneath Zoe as she’s cooking to see if there will be any scraps.

The Land of Nod has quite a few great toys to choose from for the Holidays.

Holiday Gift Idea Rokenbok Blocks Rok Works Construction and Action Toy

October 28, 2010 by Momstart 277 Comments

imageLong time readers will know that I used to manage a boutique before I had children. In that store we sold upscale toys and clothing, along with all kinds of baby and children’s items. I learned a lot about products before I had children myself so I felt pretty prepared on what we needed and didn’t need. Yeah, I learned even more once we actually had kids. Anyways, Rokenbok is one of the brands that I had quite a bit of experience with. We had a set in the store that was for the kids to play with. Just to make sure that pieces didn’t walk off it was behind a glass and the kids could play with the remote controls to move the balls around with the trucks. Once you purchase it, imagethen at home you get to build the set, the conveyer belt and then  use the truck to move the balls around.

What is new to me is the Rokenbok Blocks. These Blocks are for kids that are a bit younger than the ones using the Rokenbok Advanced RC Sets. In fact, even Miles age 2 greatly enjoyed playing with the Rokenbok Rok Blocks. This smaller set is geared to ages 3 – 6 and the age range is perfect. Miles was just a bit too young but he still loves trying and playing with his sister. They spent a few days making airplanes cars and houses, before we even opened the other set Rokenbok sent us to review.

image

Rokenbok Blocks are made for kids just learning how to put building blocks together. The cone shaped tops guide the pieces into alignment and lock them into place. The building blocks are also very easy for the children to take apart and rebuild. Rokenbok Blocks keep Zoe and Miles’s attention for a longer period of time because after the building is done they can have imaginative play with what they created. The set we received included a person to sit in the house, car or airplane.

Rokenbok contacted me and asked if we wanted to do this review. I didn’t have to think about it for very long because having a husband that loves imagebuilding things with the kids I knew it would be loved by everyone! You can even see me in the photo to the left building some kind of car with Miles.

The Rokenbok line of toys is broken into 4 levels of play with increasing levels of challenge. The first level is the Rokenbok Rok Blocks and Deluxe Rock Blocks See ROK Blocks and  Deluxe ROK Blocks for details

The second level is also for ages 3 plus it is called the Preschool RC. The goal of playing with Rokenbok is to have children learn how to invent their own real, working buildings.  That’s why the remote control vehicles are so important; they are tough, precise real working equipment that give children reasons to create.  As your Rokenbok collection grows, your child can invent a bridge to drive across, a custom trailer to be towed, a loading dock where truck and monorail exchange Rokenbokcargo, even an entire factory that receives, sorts, stores, and dispenses. Their remote control (retails for 34.99) for their RC products was created with the ability to control multiple cars. There is a switch on the remote allowing you to go between vehicles saving parents a bit of money when they make the jump from Preschool to Full Featured (stage 3) and Advanced (stage 4) easy.

imageWe also received the Rokenbok Construction and Action Set from Rokenbok. This set is geared towards age six and up and retails for about 129.99. We opened it and let the kids play with it. Andrew and I helped them build the  factory where the balls can be loaded and then unloaded.

I would say the only negative to Rokenbok in general is the price point. It is a bit high in my opinion but it is a hearty toy with a lifetime warranty. Letting Miles play with the RC Truck and the remote made me quite nervous buy my husband and I both quickly noticed that it was going to take a lot more than Miles misusing the truck for it to break. So I would say they are an investment that will last your child’s entire childhood. image

What has two microprocessors, three motors, working headlights and four-wheel drive? The Rokenbok Loader, of course! Rokenbok remote control machines are tough, real working equipment.  They are built for rough play, crashes, and spills. This is is not an ordinary remote control toy, but a precise and very rugged ROK Star controlled robot. ROK Star machines are smart too. They won’t interfere with each other so that you can add as many ROK Star machines and controllers as you want to your Rokenbok world.
