X-Why-Z Answers the Common Kid Question: Why?

X-Why-Z Answers the Common Kid Question: Why?

By Emily

It seems my youngest daughter’s new favorite word is "why". I know I should be thankful that it’s no longer the "no" word, but the "why" word requires a bigger supermom power: brains. When I don’t have the answers, she’s old enough to know that mommy’s telling stories and on a good day when I have the answer to her question, it can still be hard to explain in a way that she can understand and relate to. To help encourage her wonder and satisfy her curiosity, I have found a great book to help answer a variety of everyday “whys” with X-Why-Z by Time Home Entertainment Inc. and TIME For Kids.

XwhyZcover

From animals to plants, from the human body to history, the new book X-Why-Z helps children ages four to six better understand the world they live in. Addressing more than 200 questions, accompanied by colorful photos and vibrant illustrations, X-Why-Z delivers age-appropriate answers to questions ranging from “Why do I sneeze?” to “Why is grass green?” Thoughtfully crafted by the editors of the award-winning TIME For Kids classroom magazine, parents, teachers, and libraries can be sure that X-Why-Z is age appropriate, informative and entertaining.

Sample questions and answers include:

Human Body:

Q. Why do I get goosebumps?

A. Goosebumps help your skin keep warm. Your hair stands up to protect your skin from cold air. Each tiny hair makes one bump.

Animals:

Q. Why do cats lick you?

A. Cats lick people to show they care. It’s like a mother cat cleaning her kitten.

Nature:

Q. Why do tree leaves change color?

A. During the spring and summer, leaves are filled with green chlorophyll. The chlorophyll helps the trees make food, and it makes the leaves look green. In the colder fall weather, leaves lose their chlorophyll and show their bright colors.

Earth & Space:

Q. Why does the moon seem to change shape?

A. One side of the moon always faces the sun, and one side is always dark. Here on Earth, we can only see the part of the moon that is lit by the sun. For a few days every month, we see the whole lit side, and we call it a full moon. The rest of the month, we only see part of the lit side, so the moon looks smaller. When we can’t see any of the lit part, we call that a new moon.

Inventions:

Q. Why are school buses yellow?

A. Yellow is an easy color to see, even in bad weather. The bright color warns drivers to look out for children.

Places:

Q. Why do igloos keep people warm?

A. A house made of ice does not sound warm. But people who live in frozen places can make an igloo very comfortable. A fire can warm the small space, but it will not melt the ice walls. The igloo also blocks the freezing wind.

History:

Q. Why did Egyptians make mummies?

A. Ancient Egyptians believed in life after death. They wanted to preserve their bodies for the next life. A mummy is a dead body that has been dried and wrapped in strips of linen cloth so that it will not rot.

I set out to read a chapter a day with my daughter starting with the Human Body, but we both enjoyed the fun facts and pictures so much we continued onto to Animals and Nature. My older daughter also took interest and finished the book reading Earth & Space, Inventions, Places and History to her little sister (and I got dinner on the table peacefully too!)

No surprise to me, my daughter’s favorite page is “Why Does Some Food Taste Good?” Fun facts with a picture of an enormous lollipop! And here I thought she’d be sick of candy by now…

We also enjoyed many of the animal facts including “Why Can Hummingbirds Stop in the Air?” After seeing a hummingbird earlier in the day, my daughter learned that this hummingbiXwhyZpagerd was able to flutter the way it did because they beat their wings more than 50 times every second! They are such powerful flyers that they can slow down and stop in the air. They can even fly backward!

We’ve read through this book many times already and it never seems to get old. In fact, my daughters like to quiz each other on the answers when they play school. With so many kid-friendly questions and answers, fun filled facts and colorful photographs, X-Why-Z is a fabulous find for any child.

“It is with great pride that TIME For Kids presents X-Why-Z as the first title in our highly anticipated new series of books for children ages four to six,” said Bob Der, Editorial Director, TIME For Kids. “X-Why-Z is the perfect reference book for children and a great conversation starter for parents to have with their children. It’s a book that kids will come back to again and again.”

X-Why-Z (Time Home Entertainment Inc.; $14.95) is on sale now and available at www.timeforkids.com/xwhyz and at retailers nationwide.

By Emily

(sample received)

To help promote literacy in young children, I have begun a tradition of including books with every birthday gift I give. With my own children I usually try to find something unique to them, but I’m often stumped when it comes to the interests of their friends. With the help of my book-loving little girl, we’ve enjoyed the challenge of seeking out books that will appeal to a wide range of kids. When given the opportunity to review a copy of the newly released Top 5 of Everything my daughter insisted we had to check it out. From the title alone, my daughter couldn’t wait to get her hands on a copy and I admit I was pretty intrigued as well.

Top5coverThe book, Top 5 of Everything, by Time Home Entertainment Inc. and the editors of TIME For Kids includes top 5 lists for a variety of kid-friendly topics. The lists featured in the book cover many subjects, from animals, sports, technology, food, people and entertainment. What are the five most popular names for dogs? What are the five oldest baseball stadiums? Who were the five youngest United States presidents? The answers to those questions and dozens more are found in the new book.

The book features more than 100 lists, including the following topics:

· The baseball players with the most home runs

· The fastest roller coasters

· The most popular dog breeds

· The biggest spiders

Thanks to Top 5 of Everything so many of my daughter’s curiosities have been answered and my sanity saved! This book has become a favorite in our home and with friends and family. My daughter has taken Top 5 of Everything on the bus to school, to playdates and sleepovers to share with her friends. As you can see by my picture, our copy has been well loved! Time For Kids BIG Book of What? Features 801 Facts Kids Want to Know for Ages 8 and Up

BIG Book of What? Features 801 Facts Kids Want to Know for Ages 8 and Up

By Orshi:

clip_image002Do you ever drive somewhere and get the question from the back seat: “Mommy, how does electricity work? How do you make tires? What are clouds made out of?” …. I hear questions like this all the time from my almost 5-year-old boy. This little man’s mind is wired to figure out how things work, why are things a certain way, or what are random stuff made out of. He asks questions like this on regular bases and he stores information like a hard-drive. Occasionally we stumble over a question that I don’t know the answer to: we were at a wedding a few months ago and we discussed how organs work. I explained the basic principal behind the instrument … then he turned to me and said ‘okay, but how does the air go from the keyboard to the pipes?” (it was one of those free standing kind that was placed in the center of the sanctuary with the pipes all around the front wall) Ummm … I drew a blank and had to come home and look it up. The Big Book of What? is the most perfect book for my boy because it answers questions like this and encourages him to think more and deeper about things he sees and learns about every day.

The 192-page book, packed with more than 250 colorful photos and diagrams, bring words to life, informing and engaging young readers. TIME For Kids’ high quality visuals, as well as clear, concise and child-friendly explanations, help kids ages 8 and up discover answers to questions covering various topics spanning twelve chapters. Topics and questions, such as:

· Animals – What is a Kookaburra?

· Space – What is a Solar Eclipse?

clip_image004· The Human Body – What is Dyslexia?

· Weather & Climate – What is the Driest Place on Earth?

· Food – What is Poutine?

· Survival – What If You Come Across a Snake?

· Sports – What is the World’s Most Popular Sport?

· History – What is a Ghost Town?

· Holidays & Festivals – What is Mardi Gras?

· Mysteries – What Was the Roanoke Colony?

· Inventions – What is a Boomerang and How Can You Make Your Own?

· The Future – What Will We Be Eating for Dinner?

Our whole family loves this book. We sit around during breakfast time and read amazing new stuff that help our minds wake up. The other day we read about boomerangs and we ended up making and testing out new toys still in pajamas. I am a teacher so as an adult I am greatly enjoying the topics and the questions under each theme. Many science questions include an activity that you can make from basic items found in your home, which makes this book interactive and encourages scientific exploration.

I was raised with book: my parents spent a lot of money on beautiful colorful hardcovers and encyclopedias that I could get lost in for hours. Today, we look everything up on the internet and I miss having the simple pleasure of just popping a book open and reading away about random interesting snips of things. Since we received this book, I have seen my son sit round more often; looking at pictures and getting even more ideas for his questions.

This book makes a great gift for anyone with a curious mind or just to have it on your coffee table for those times when your mind is hungry for new things to ponder about.

The BIG Book of What? (Time Home Entertainment Inc.; June 5, 2012; $19.95) is available at www.timeforkids.com/bigbookofwhat and retailers nationwide.

Time For Kids Big Book of Science Experiments Review

December 23, 2011 by Momstart 6 Comments

By Summer:

Once Christmas is over the school year ramps up again, and with that is usually SCIENCE FAIRS! If you’re missing that one last gift this holiday season think about TIME for Kids Big Book of Science Experiences. If you have an engineer, ecologist, physicist or other budding scientist then this is an everyday book for them. If you have a student who struggles in science this book is a step-by-step guide to more than 100 projects for science fair success. Owning this book (especially if you have more than one child) is a no brainer! TIME for Kids Big Book of Science Experiences is also “powdered” by Mad Science, you may have heard of them from their camps in your local area.

clip_image002

The TIME for Kids Big Book of Science Experiences offers sections in Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Science, Technology and Engineering, and (just in case) Science Fair Success Secrets. My almost 5YO is all about getting our book asking to do experiments. He’ll browse the book and find one that looks interesting to him; though he isn’t able to do the experiences himself, MAINLY because he refuses to read.

The first experiment my husband and sons (almost 5YO and 2YO) did was on Earth Science and the differences and properties of salt water and fresh water. Here’s how it went:

IMG_8793IMG_8794IMG_8795IMG_8796IMG_8797IMG_8799IMG_8800IMG_8801IMG_8802IMG_8804IMG_8805IMG_8807IMG_8810IMG_8811

My sons both enjoyed it. They loved doing an experiment and spending the time with daddy. What a fun book! I’d highly recommend this for families and classrooms. If you need a last minute gift or stocking stuffer for you household or if you’d like to get your child’s classroom teacher an new fun and practical book than buy TIME for Kids Big Book of Science Experiences.

Fund a Teacher’s Project through Bing and DonorsChoose.org

May 28, 2010 by Momstart 8 Comments

Bing is more than just a search engine. Bing is working on ways to help people find information. They know that students are one of their top users and they want to do something for them. So, by helping teachers raise money for projects they are making a difference in communities all over the United States. Bing and DonorsChoose.org have teamed up to raise money for teachers and projects that will help them to inspire greatness in their students. Teacher Appreciation starts here! Teachers are so important and I know they are the least respected and in most areas not paid for the value they provide us all.

I have been given 100.00 to donate to a school of my choice, and I want to choose something local. Looking at all the different projects made choosing something very difficult. I took in a lot of factors, and ended up choose a school in a small city very close to mine. The teacher is only asking for a very small gift. She wants to provide a subscription of TIME FOR KIDS for each of her students. I just reviewed TIME FOR KIDS on my blog and I love it. I know she is going to be able to use it to inspire her students.

I teach first graders who are always eager to learn. The majority come from homes without books and books at their reading level aren’t available. Over 70% of my students qualify for the free/reduced lunch program and 65% are English Language Learners. Over 45% of my students qualify for Title I reading assistance and/or Special Education instruction."

You can make a difference too. Just visit www.bing.com/education and post a comment or share a story about a teacher that touched your life or your child’s life and Bing will provide you with a $5 donation to DonorsChoose.org. You can then apply it toward any classroom project of your choice. Each visitor can leave up to 5 comments for a total of $25 that you can use as a donation. At the end of June, Bing will aggregate the comments and share them with each teacher in the form of a congratulations letter.

"I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Bing and a $100 DonoseChoose.org giving code to facilitate my review. Mom Central also sent me a thank-you gift certificate."

President Obama The day and life of a President kids Time Magazine #Giveaway

October 23, 2009 by Momstart 14 Comments

time

I think the first time I saw a copy of this was when I was walking down the book aisle at Target. I was thinking I should probably get this for my kids because they are going to have to do a report on this some day in school. President Obama is the first African American President, he hasn’t even completed his first year and office and he won the Nobel Peace Prize. I mean, this issue of Time for Kids came out before he won the Nobel Peace prize but it is still an interesting read.

The pictures are wonderful and I’m always up for seeing how Michelle has picked out the best outfits for her entire family. The President always looks super sharp as do both of her daughters. In A Day in the Life of America’s Leader you can ready how Barak Obama made it to the White House, Who helps Obama make the Tough Calls, and see behind the scenes with the family and inside the White House.

I am proud to be an American and feel that if I agree with all his platforms or not he is a good leader for this Country.
