Kids #EatFresh at Subway – Study Shows A Healthy On the Go Option ($40 Subway Giveaway)

By: Ashley

I received a gift card for this post. All opinions are my own.

I am a Subway fan, and I have been for awhile. You want to know the funny thing? During both of my pregnancies, it’s been one of my biggest cravings! I know you’re supposed to stay away from deli meat, so I always get chicken or make sure they super toast my sandwich. It makes me feel good to know that I can order something freshly made, not fried, and healthy. I know everyone’s definition of “healthy” is different, but for me it means up front ingredients, something without grease, and something that has the option for some green veggies. I try really hard to make great choices for myself, and try even harder to make great choices for my kids. That’s why the results of a recent study on kids’ meals leaves me feeling pretty good about choosing Subway.

The Center for Science in Public Interest recently released the results of a study Kids’ Meals: Obesity and Poor Nutrition on the Menu. This study looked at the options on the kids’ menu at 50 of the nation’s top chain restaurants. The government recommends that children (ages 4 to 10) get between 1200 and 2200 calories a day. Unfortunately, most chain kids’ meals are high in saturated fat and many were over 1000 calories.

The National Restaurant Association actually has a voluntary Kids LiveWell menu standard. According to an article in USA Today, the LiveWell menu standard says, “healthy kids’ meals have 600 calories or less, get 35% or less of their calories from total fat and total sugar, have no more than 770 mg. sodium, and also meet other nutrition criteria. The standards emphasize lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole-grain and low-fat dairy products.” ALL of Subway’s Fresh Fit kid’s meals (each include 4” sub, apple slices, and low-fat milk or bottled water) met this standard! I have to admit that usually I let my son grab the fruit juice instead of the milk which does add some calories, but he usually drinks water, so I think the special juice treat is okay. He also prefers his sub a little deconstructed, but what kid doesn’t?

It’s Avocado Season at Subway! Made Fresh Giveaway #AddVocado

June 25, 2012 by Momstart 697 Comments

It’s Avocado Season at Subway!

By Emily

I didn’t try my first fresh avocado until I was 21! Growing up in the Midwest, the only way I ever knew an avocado was served was in the guacamole our local Mexican restaurant. Oh, how deprived I was! Now I must be making up for the 21 year void because I love to add fresh avocado to just about any salad and sandwich. And lucky for me and the other avocado lovers out there because it’s now avocado season at Subway restaurants nationwide! You can always add avocado to any of your favorite Subway salads and sandwiches, but here are some of the featured sandwiches you can choose from:

Avocado Sub

· B.L.T. with avocado

· Chipotle Steak and Cheese with avocado

· Turkey and Bacon with avocado

· Bacon, Egg and Cheese with avocado

I picked up lunch for my daughters and I last week at our local Subway and we enjoyed the Turkey and Bacon with avocado and the B.L.T. with avocado. BLT’s are one of my favorite summertime sandwiches and adding that fresh avocado really makes it an extra special treat. I’m planning to return for dinner this week to try out the Chipotle Steak and Cheese with avocado. If that’s just as good, I might just have to return before avocado season is over at Subway for breakfast and check out the Bacon, Egg and Cheese with avocado. Avocados are truly a great summer indulgence!

In the spirit of avocado season, here are Subway’s favorite “SUPER Good” Summertime Indulgences:

1. Enjoy Tasty Foods – Whether it’s a sweet treat or sprucing up a favorite sandwich, a little flavor will go a long way! We suggest indulging with the Turkey & Bacon with Avocado – or adding avocado to your fave Subway sandwich. Bravo for Avocado! Or as we say, BRAVOCADO!bravocado-500x315

2. Spend Time Outdoors – Skip your Saturday chores and take a walk to the park or beach, go for a hike or bike along a trail – and pack a picnic with your favorite sandwiches!

3. Treat Yourself – Shake things up with an Avocado Smoothie! Combine 2 cups of milk, 1 large avocado, 2 tablespoons of honey and ice in a blender and blend until smooth. Yum!

4. Staycation – Why not make being in your hometown its own vacation? Take a day or a weekend and explore your city, visit new places or just see it through a new lens!

5. Movie Nights– This summer will be filled with movies! Why not consider catch a couple of movies and taking in a night of the big screen?

What is your favorite summertime indulgence? Share yours for a chance to win! ONE lucky Momstart.com reader will win a $25 Subway Gift Card.

Don’t forget to visit Subway on Facebook and follow them Twitter for more updates (They’ll be talking avocado with the #AddVocado hash tag all June)!

Apolo Anton Ohno Trades in His Skates with Subway

November 5, 2011 by Momstart 1,360 Comments

By Reviewer Ashley,

Apolo Anton Ohno Trades in His Skates for the ING New York City Marathon … all with Subway’s Support!

Apolo Anton Ohno, usually known for his 8 Olympic medals in Speed Skating, is making headlines as he prepares to run the ING New York City Marathon this Sunday. Thanks to Subway, I had the chance to talk with Apolo and his trainer via conference call and get a behind the scenes look at his journey to the marathon.

Apolo Anton Ohno Subway

It all started when Subway’s Famous Jared Fogel challenged Apolo (along with some of Subway’s other Famous Fans) to complete the NYC Marathon. With the marathon just around the corner, Apolo is hanging tough and couldn’t be more excited to run.

In the interview, Apolo described his training regimen pretty in depth. It was interesting how different it was from the usual training Ohno was accustomed to with speed skating. He said that it was both a physical and mental change that he had to make in order to prepare for the ING New York City Marathon. It wasn’t about all-out, big and fast, but more about pacing and endurance. What really drives Apolo? Well, he just has that “No Regrets” mantra that he truly lives by. He says that he wants no regrets in the preparation, no regrets in the execution, and no regrets when he crosses the line. That’s a mantra he applies to all aspects of his life. One other big motivator in for the ING New York City Marathon is that Subway is planning to donate $26,200 ($1000 for each mile that Apolo runs) to Special Olympics.

Subway Advertisement With Apolo OhnoWith the perspective of a mom, I was really excited to ask Apolo what advice and thoughts he had on getting moms up, active, and healthy. His answer was both inspiring and completely logical. First of all, Apolo made it clear that he truly lives by his mantra “No Regrets.” The more he talked though, the more it became so specific to moms. Apolo says that the biggest excuse given about exercise is that there is just not enough time. (Which we all know is true…) The fact of the matter though, according to him, is that no matter how small you start, even if it is only 15-20 minutes a day of physical activity, you will begin to feel the benefits and get hooked. That is 15-20 minutes a day that is just for you. Your mind can be clear. It is all about you, your body, and your mind. He continued on to say that once you start exercising regularly, you can feel such a difference in your mental clarity and efficiency. (Who among us couldn’t use more of that, right?)

In addition to exercise, eating right is also key to living a healthy lifestyle. According to Apolo’s marathon trainer Todd Rushworth , having the luxury of scheduled eating every 2-3 hours really is best to increase your metabolism and keep your body burning calories. That doesn’t mean you should be popping a candy bar every few hours, but watching your portion control and eating good foods will help lead you down the road to healthy living. Todd and Apolo both agree that Subway is definitely a great stop for eating healthy when you’re on the go. When I asked Apolo what his “go to” Subway sandwich was, he said the footlong Turkey on Honey Oat – double meat. =) It’s actually making me crave a delicious Subway sandwich right now!

How about you MomStart readers? Could you use a trip to Subway? Well Subway has teamed up with MomStart to giveaway a $25 Subway gift card. Make sure you enter to win the giveaway… and make sure to cheer Apolo on as he runs in the ING New York City Marathon this weekend!
