Kids Love Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

October 27, 2012 by Momstart 18 Comments

My kids have the PBS app on their iPad where they can watch Sprout shows, PBS children’s shows on their iPad. I caught them last night watching Daniel Tiger’s neighborhood. I’ve also heard from one of my neighbors who has an over active little girl who will only sit and watch Daniel Tiger’s neighborhood. Everything else she has no interest in. I think it’s quite cute, I mean it’s Mr. Rogers modernized for kids.

According to a recent PBS KIDS survey of parents of 2-6 year-olds, 86 percent of parents believe they have the most influence in preparing children for kindergarten and teaching a child social-emotional skills.

The survey stated that parents rely on a variety of tools, including parenting books/magazines (47%), PBS KIDS (46%), online parenting sites (46%), and other moms/parents (45%), to give them guidance on preparing their children for school.  As was found in the survey, PBS KIDS can be a viable resource for parents, providing tips and advice for dealing with social emotional issues, such as how to handle potty training, problem solving or teaching your child how to share.

PBS KIDS’ new show DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD can be a unique “secret tool” for any parent’s tool box.  The show is designed to help support a child’s social-emotional development and to give kids practical strategies for dealing with various emotions.

PBS KIDS has developed five simple tips, adapted from the new series DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, which launched earlier this month, to help parents support their children’s social-emotional development, and to give kids practical strategies for dealing with various emotions:

Tip #1: When your child is disappointed about something, help him/her find something positive about the situation to focus on instead.

Tip #2: When your child gets angry, encourage him/her to take a deep breath and count to four.

Tip #3: Encourage your child to keep trying when he/she is struggling with a challenging task.

Tip #4: When your child is feeling apprehensive about a new experience – like going to the doctor or starting school – talk to him/her about what to expect beforehand.

Tip #5: Teach your child patience by coming up with activities to do while you’re waiting, like singing a song or playing a quiet game.

Sprout Organic Toddler Meals – Healthy and Convenient!

September 16, 2012 by Momstart 10 Comments

By Andrea

Andrea is a new contributor here at MomStart and she’s going to be doing reviews for children’s products. Here is her first, leave her some comment love so she knows she’s appreciated.

Being a new mom, mealtime can sometimes be a daunting task; especially since my baby is not a fan of purees that come out of a jar of any sort.  Although I prepare most meals for my daughter, sometimes I am in a hurry and need something quick.  Sprout Organic Toddler Meals are perfect for those occasions when you are in a pinch!  And healthy too!  Sprout has introduced a new line of toddler meals made with all organic and nutritious ingredients.  These meals were actually created by Co-Founder and Food Network Chef, Tyler Florence, who is also a father of three.  There are 8 different table-ready entrees:

  • Vegetable Risotto with Quinoa & Parmesan
  • Macaroni & Cheese with Butternut Squash
  • Pasta, Zucchini &Tomato Sauce with Beef Beef
  • Vegetable & Potato Stew with Beef
  • Sweet Potato & Apple Risotto with Turkey
  • Vegetable & White Bean Stew with Turkey
  • Vegetable & Barley Stew with Chicken
  • Vegetable & Potato Chowder with Chicken

Sprout was kind enough to send us three different entrees to try out: Vegetable Risotto with Quinoa & Parmesan, Vegetable & Potato Stew with Beef and Vegetable & Potato Chowder with Chicken.  Sure enough, soon after receiving the package, I found myself in one of those situations where I needed to figure out dinner for my baby fast.  I was so excited to have these on hand.  I grabbed the Vegetable & Potato Stew with Beef and popped it in the microwave for 30 seconds, and it was done!  I gave it a quick taste (I usually taste the food before I give it to my baby) and I was pleasantly surprised at how yummy it was.  Apparently, my daughter concurred because she gobbled it right up.  She loved it!  This one was by far her favorite of the three.  She enjoyed the Vegetable & Potato Chowder with Chicken but she did not like the Vegetable Risotto with Quinoa & Parmesan (which, I have to admit, looked less appetizing than it actually was).  Hey, you win some you lose some!  Overall, these table-ready entrees were a hit with mommy and baby!

Sprout Organic Toddler Meals are not just for toddlers, they are great for babies too.  My 10 month old loves to feed herself (as we’ve been practicing Baby-Led Weaning since she was 6 months old), so she used her hands for the meals that were of a thicker consistency and I spoon-fed her the meals that were soupier.  Mommies love these meals too because they have no additives or preservatives, artificial colors or flavors and no added sugars.  They are a great option for those who like to feed their children organic and nutritious meals, as they are loaded with organic vegetables, fruit, whole grains and protein.  Each 6.5 oz microwavable container is BPA-free and retails for about $3.55.  You can find them at Target, Whole Foods, online, and at grocery stores nationwide.
