Sid The Science Kid’s Backyard Campout

June 17, 2011 by Momstart 265 Comments

Sid The Science Kid is a family favorite, it’s one of the only kid shows my husband can watch with the kids over and over again. PBS must realize this is true for many families because in honor of summer we’re pumping up the buzz for a new adventure happening with Sid and his Father, Sid The Science Kid’s Backyard Campout.

image

I was asked to have a campout with my family in the backyard while watching Sid the Science Kid Backyard Campout and we haven’t found the time to watch it. My house flooded, It was rainy and cold , and I’ve been out of town for 11 days and I hate that we weren’t able to do it yet. So as soon as I get home it’s going to be one of the first things we do. So be on the lookout for our full review. Also,

The local PBS station, KCTS 9, is hosting a Sid The Science Kid Backyard Campout Giveaway in honor of the Sid The Science Kid Backyard Campout episode that will air on Monday, June 20 at 10:00 a.m. and a bunch of times throughout the summer after that. They’re also going to do a blanket giveaway contest Friday June 15th and running it through the end of July. Locals to the Seattle Area can discover more to love about KCTS 9 at Facebook.com/KCTS9 and www.twitter.com/kcts9. While others will want to check their local listings for episode time and local giveaways to enter.

This giveaway has ended. Congratulations to Susan Smith.

Earth Day Sid The Science Kid Going Green DVD Giveaway

April 19, 2011 by Momstart 86 Comments

It’s Earth Week, and yes I missed the boat, it started on Monday, or Sunday, not entirely sure. According to Sid the Science kid and his Earth Day week it started on Monday. "Sid the Science Kid," the half-hour animated series that inspires preschoolers to discover their world, is celebrating Environment & Habitat Week April 18-22! You can enjoy them all on Sid the Science Kid: Going, Going, Green!  as well.

SID_206A_WATERHis celebration starts off with four episodes commemorating Earth Day, Sid and his friends find the answers to these questions about water, clean air, trash and trees:

  • What happens to water that goes down the drain?
  • Why does Sid’s dad wear a mask when he paints?
  • Where does trash go when you throw it away?
  • Can an old stump be a home for tiny creatures?

SID_207A_AIRWe love watching Sid the Science Kid and watching these episodes was no different. Sid has a great way of putting things we may think of as difficult to explain to children in their terms. They find that if Sid can do it they can do it. We were watching the episode about when the air gets dirty. It started off with Sid’s dad painting and using a mask so he was protected from the fumes. Sid was confused because he couldn’t see the fumes, which is a true statement. How do we know when the air is dirty when we can’t see it. So Miles was pretty interested in learning as he watched Sid learn about air pollution.

Sid the Science kid going green will help you teach your children four different areas on how to keep our beautiful earth clean all year round.

Sid would love for you to celebrate Earth Day with him! Check your local listings for time to watch Environment & Habitat Week April 18-22!

SID_logo_no_characterTuesday, April 19 (Repeats on Earth Day Friday, April 22)

207: “Clean Air!” Sid the roving reporter is investigating something strange in his backyard–his Dad is wearing a mask while painting. Sid discovers that his Dad is protecting his face so he doesn’t breathe in the dirty fumes. At school, Sid and his friends discover that people and animals on Earth need to breathe clean air, and when we pollute the air around us, it affects the air that everyone breathes. The kids also discover that trees have a really important role in keeping our air clean!

Wednesday, April 20

208:  “Reused Robot” Sid’s toy robot is broken, so he wants to throw it "away." Sid’s Mom tells him there is no such thing as "away," and when we put something in the trash, we are actually creating waste.  Sid and his friends explore the idea that everything we throw away goes somewhere.  This leads to an investigation of how to recycle and reuse items so that we make less trash.

Thursday, April 21

Image converted using ifftoany209: “Save The Stump” Sid is super excited because his Dad is clearing out space in the yard for a basketball court! While Sid and Dad are surveying the land, Sid notices a big stump teeming with little creatures! During a special field trip to The Science Center, Sid and his friends discover that there are animal habitats all around us, even in old stumps, and if one habitat is destroyed, all of the other habitats and animals are affected.

I LOVE using my influence on-line to make a difference in my community. Last week we had a tweet up in Seattle and I helped gather swag, donations and door prizes. The event was the Seattle Tweet Drive. I posted in detail about the Seattle Tweetdrive a few weeks ago when I started looking for sponsors and I’m so happy with all the companies that supported us. See the full list below! We had a great turnout and Look at what we did for the charity Treehouse! I’m exhausted and extremely behind on my blog posts, but I feel great because it was all for a really great cause. Club Sur donated the space, My Seattle Night Out organized the event, and local bands and entertainers donated their time and efforts for all of us to have a great time! We gathered around 333 toys total! Tweet Drive is going on nationally in many different locations, check Tweet Drive 2010 to find a location next to you.

Sid The Science Kid Home Party and Science Kit Giveaway

October 2, 2010 by Momstart 161 Comments

Sid the Science Kid is a FAMILY favorite. Yes, the whole family likes watching Sid, not just Zoe and Miles. In fact I would say that it is their dad’s favorite cartoon to watch with them. We love watching Sid and he’s helped us with things like wearing sunscreen and discovering bugs. We had the privelage of throwing a Sid The Science Kid Party and sharing some new toys from Sid The Science Kid. The Sid The Science Kid Party was thrown in honor of Sid the Science Kid, the award-winning, educational television series from the Jim Henson Studios returning for its second season with 12 new episodes on October 4th! That’s Monday People! Tune into PBS to watch the new series and check imageyour local listings for times!

At PBS they believe that introducing preschoolers to the basics of science through the eyes of a young science reporter named Sid, is a fun way to educate.  Each episode begins with a new question and Sid embarks on a fun day of adventures filled with singing and dancing. The singing and dancing is not annoying in anyway and we find that the information is really presented in a way that a child would actually understand and do themselves.

imageWe were provided with the supplies, plates, napkins, and cups, a Sid the Science Kid Microphone, and the Sid The Science Kid Kit Why Are Wheels Round. The Microphone we shared and it was a huge hit. I was asked where you can purchase one because a special birthday is coming up! I believe you can find them at Amazon, and Target. I know if you search for them on-line you will find plenty of places to purchase them.

Sid seems to be quite a favorite in other families too, or at least that is what I gathered from the party. We had a lot of fun that day, so much that I didn’t get any other pictures captured other than the party supplies. OOPS!

The next day, when daddy was home we did the science kit, Why are wheels round? My husband had them do it just like Sid would have. They explored every aspect of it. They used the square wheels, the oval wheels and the round wheels. They talked about friction and when the friction was the best and worst. It was quite fun to watch them all do it together. Then they had to write down their discoveries in their journals. Which was also fun to watch them draw!

After they made all of their discoveries inside the house they had to see how it would do outside on the sidewalk. So we had quite a fun day with our experiment.

Favorite Children’s TV Shows Giveaway

May 19, 2010 by Momstart 201 Comments

I love to watch TV and yes I am so guilty of letting my kids watch too much TV, but most of it is really good for them. They learn so much from some of the programming. Zoe knows her alphabet and we’re working on lower case letters now. Some of that reinforcement comes from TV. Check out a few of our favorites here:

Firefly Fun & Buggy BuddiesSesame Street – Firefly Fun and Buggy Buddies

Warner Brothers is a publisher for Sesame Street DVD’s and they sent me a copy of Firefly Fun and Buggy Buddies to review. We watch this episode all the time, it is one of the episodes we recorded before we turned our cable off. So we have Elmo’s World Bugs, Slimey’s Pet Bug Dirty, and Fly, Little Firefly! We like to sing this song and pretend that we are little Fireflies right along with Telly Monster and Baby Bear.

This DVD is all about bugs. Telly and Baby bear try to figure out how to catch a firefly. But once they do, they see that the firefly was sad. So they had to pretend to be fireflies to understand that the firefly was unhappy with the small amount of space he was stuck in.

You know how Oscar has a pet worm? The worm Slimey wanted to get a pet, so Oscar takes him pet shopping. They then pick out a bug and have to learn how to take care of a pet together.

Wow Wow Wubbzy – Escape from Dino Island

Wow Wow Wubbzy: Escape From Dino IslandNick Junior sent us Wow Wow Wubbzy newest adventure on DVD; Escape from Dino Island. Wubbzy is a cute and quirky bendy-tailed character  that takes viewers on many adventures in the brand-new DVD, “Escape From Dino Island.”  Whether it’s exploring the jungle, swinging from vines or “discovering” friendly new creatures, you will find here.

“We are very excited to bring ‘Escape From Dino Island,’ to DVD as the newest title in our collection of award-winning Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! releases,” said Julie Cartwright, SVP of Brand Marketing for Anchor Bay Entertainment.  “Preschoolers and families nationwide will dig the dinosaur-themed entertainment that is sure to bring laughs to the youngest set, while imparting important life lessons about honesty, teamwork and more!”

In Escape form Dino Island has six episodes and a bonus episode making seven total episodes for your preschooler to watch, and if they are anything like the two of mine then they will love Wubbzy in Escape from Dino Island. Start off with the adventure Escape From Dino Island, Then you’ll find Wubbzy The Hero, Call of the Mild, Wubbzy and the Sparkle Stone, Daizy’s Purple Thumb and Mt. Fizzy Pop. Then the final episode is Too Much of a Doodle Thing.

Also a star on the Internet, Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! remains the top game for the past two years on Nick Jr. ®’s award-winning website (www.nickjr.com) and boasts the first-ever video podcasts for preschoolers at www.wubbzy.com.

Cover Image - Sid the Science Kid: Weather Kid SidSid The Science Kid – Weather Kid Sid

NCircle Entertainment and PBS sent me a copy of Sid the Science Kid Weather Kid Sid to review with my family.Sid the Science Kid is about Sid and his friends and the discoveries they make at school. They have science lessons every day, as they sing, play and interact with one another just like children do every day. The feel of the show is so natural, every day Sid gets up, struggles to get his breakfast eaten, goes off to school and plays with his friends. He occasionally has a play date after school with his best friend Gabriela. Gabriela is my daughter’s favorite character because of the pigtails, but she is also partial to May and her purple hair.

Weather Kid Sid has four episodes with the first episode introducing the rain. They learned all about how the rain helps things to grow, and that it doesn’t just rain to ruin play dates.  Another episode was about spending the day with his dad out in the sun. Sid was protesting the sun block, the same way mine did, but he learned all about why it was necessary to put on sun block.

The Answer to Kids Sunscreen Protests, Weather Kid Sid

May 15, 2010 by Momstart 5 Comments

Cover Image - Sid the Science Kid: Weather Kid Sid

Yesterday I wrote a review about one of my favorite programs to watch with my kids, Dinosaur Train, today, I’m writing about my husband’s favorite show, Sid the Science Kid. NCircle Entertainment and PBS sent me a copy of Sid the Science Kid Weather Kid Sid to review with my family. I’m quite excited to have a new copy of Sid the Science kids because my husband is so fond of watching it with the kids.

Sid the Science Kid is about Sid and his friends and the discoveries they make at school.

Sid was protesting the sun block, the same way mine did, but he learned all about why it was necessary to put on sun block.

image The Answer to Kids Sun Block Protests:

Zoe and Miles both absolutely detest having sunscreen put on them. Miles has to be held down, and Zoe was the same way until she watched Sid The Science Kid, Weather Kid. After watching the episode about sunscreen she will tolerate it.

At school, Sid and his friends discover that sunscreen is a great way to protect your skin from the sun. And they also learn about the amazing ways the sun helps the Earth.  Parents and their children can explore and learn more about sunscreen at the Sid the Science Kid official website at PBSKIDS.org/sid.

This was our conversation after she watched Sid the Science Kid.

Mommy, Sid doesn’t like sunblock

No he doesn’t does he sweetie?

No

But he wears it right?

Yeah

Can I put some on you now?

Yeah, I won’t scream like bubby.

Thank You Baby

She lets me put it on her now without complaint. I missed the actual episode, I watched the rain episode with them, but I missed whatever conversation she had with her dad and what she actually learned from Sid. Whatever went on, I’m very grateful to be down to only one protesting child instead of two. You know, when you’re out in public and your child is screaming, other parents stare at you and give you looks.

So if your having issues with your kids, maybe their favorite cartoon character knows a thing or two about putting on sun block. Even the Imagination Movers sing about sun block.

Sid the Science Kid Double Feature #giveaway

August 6, 2009 by MomStart 88 Comments

SidthesciencekidGood Grief!

I made a big mistake when I left my house before wrapping up all my reviews. Here is another DVD that was on my porch after I left. My husband told me about it as soon as it appeared but since I didn’t get to see then and watch them with my daughter, who loves Sid the Science Kid by the way; I forgot to host the giveaway. So before all of the giveaway copies are gone, I wanted to go ahead and invite you to enter to win two DVD’s.

“Sid the Science Kid: Change Happens” and “Sid the Science Kid: The Bug Club”

Featuring the delightfully inquisitive Sid the Science Kid and his precocious pals, both DVDs celebrate and explore the great outdoors, tackling such questions as why bees live in hives and ants live in anthills, and observing such phenomena as how the heat from the sun can change matter.  Episodes include:

“Change Happens” DVD                 “The Bug Club” DVD

Change Happens                                The Bug Club

My Mushy Banana                               Hello Doggie

My Shrinking Shoes                            Home Tweet Home

My Ice Pops                                        The Dirt on Dirt

The Perfect Pancake                          Don’t Forget the Leaves

I joined ncircle Entertainment and have items that I get to review every month. This month, I was away from the house because I’m in Texas. So my husband has told me what we received and this is one of them. Since I can’t watch it and tell you what it’s about I want to do a giveaway. The giveaway copy will be provided by nCircle.

You tell me what it’s about.

Sid the Science Kid Excites Kids for Earth Day

April 19, 2009 by MomStart 4 Comments

**************Update for EARTH DAY!********************

Visit Sid the Science Kid special earth day site. There are a lot of great activities that your little scientists are sure to enjoy (printable coloring pages, jokes, and experiments!  There are also fun resources that relate to each episode topic.  This is a great way to explore and learn together- all while encouraging kids to be friendly to our planet.

Zoe and I watched “The dirt on dirt today” a special episode of Sid the Science Kid . I loved it. I didn’t think she got anything out of it until later in the day; after their naps we went outside like we do in the afternoons. This time, Zoe saw the dirt and she wanted to play with it. She asked for her shovel and bucket and she started playing. She dumped the bucket of dirt out and said “yah”. She looked at the dirt. Then she was done until she saw mommy cleaning it up. She wanted to play with it. So I helped her use the shovel to put the dirt back in the bucket. (We have a separate bucket of dirt for her to play in because our ground is all rocks and impossible for her to play in.)

About Sid the Science Kid

Sid the Science Kid is an animated series that looks like 3-D computer animation. It is designed around children’s creative desire to learn and explore. Sid asks a lot of questions and wants to learn. His pre-school teacher is very creative and sings to help teach them about the world around them. The scientific process can be used even at their learning level. I found the singing and dancing to be very cute and funny. I think if my daughter wasn’t sick right now she would have danced as well.

“The Dirt on Dirt” is part of a day full of shows that are Earth Day inspired. Check your local listings for time and don’t forget that Earth day is April 22. This episode investigates dirt. How many kids of dirt are there? What’s in the dirt? I haven’t thought of things like that in a long time. Seeing things through the eyes of a child is eye opening.

So my daughter was encouraged to play and explore dirt from educational TV. Not all TV is bad. PBS Kids is completely educational. There are shows about reading and letters and words. Then of course you have Sesame Street which is one of my daughter’s favorite sites to visit.
