Kicking off the Season of Giving with Capital City Clauses’ Jingle In July @RalJingleBall

July 31, 2012 by Momstart 8 Comments

By: Ashley

Yes, I did just use the words jingle and July in the same phrase. Why would I do a crazy thing like that? It’s all because I like to do things that make a difference. I like to donate. I like to give. I like to volunteer. I like to make people happy. THAT is why I am incredibly excited to be involved with the Capital City Clauses here in Raleigh.

clip_image002In Seattle, I had found some of my favorite ways to help out in the community. When we moved back to NC, I knew I was going to need to find a few new good causes. *Enter Capital City Clauses* This nonprofit group has been organizing a larger than life holiday toy drive in Raleigh for almost 20 years! The Jingle Ball is a cocktail party held in December. It is always a successful event bringing tons of toys to the Salvation Army. The Capital City Clauses have now opened up other opportunities to raise even more toys for those in need. This year, they kicked it all off with Jingle In July.

clip_image004Jingle in July was a great way to start the season of giving. Yes, it may have been 100 degrees outside, but Christmas lights, Christmas sweaters, and even some Christmas trees set the mood for a wildly successful toy drive. In order to get in, attendees either donated one toy, or made a $10 cash donation. Though I don’t know exactly how much money they made, or how many toys were collected… I can safely say that it was A LOT! It definitely makes me smile to think of how generous people can be.

You know that Christmas song, Keep Christmas With You, All Through the Year? It just seems to fit, doesn’t it? Here it is, the middle of summer, and people were opening up their hearts to bring some Christmas cheer. THAT is what Christmas is all about… even if it is in July!

clip_image006

I’ve already started a collection of toys to donate in December. I’ve got my calendar marked for the Jingle Ball, and I’m standing by to see what other events they’ll come up with between now and then. I LOVE when I can use blogging to spread the word about great causes and help out.

I know this is a local event and organization, but getting involved with a good cause in your own area is such a great thing to do. See what you can find out about your area… and if you’re close to me, DEFINITELY check out my friends over at the Capital City Clauses.

Season of Giving Day 29: Nature’s Path EnviroKidz Support Endangered Species

November 29, 2011 by Momstart 3 Comments

By Summer:

I love Nature’s Path Organic Foods. This should be no secret as I’ve shared with Mom Start readers Nature’s Path Organics Foods recipes, how I love their organic healthy and ecofriendly company, and giving … which brings me to today’s Season of Giving post.

In my own home when I purchase cereal it’s Nature’s Path. My husband and I love to crunch Ancients Path in our yogurt. My kids love Nature’s Path Organic’s EnviroKidz Gorilla Munch. Nature’s Path donates 1% of the sales of EnviroKidz (their children’s line of gluten-free products) to projects that support endangered species, habitat conservation and environmental education for kids worldwide.

clip_image002

To date, they have raised over $1.4 million for the environment. This year, for the first time ever, they are offering grants of up to $20,000 to local charitable non-profits doing projects in communities across North America. Project submissions need to be non-profit organization that supports endangered species, habitat conservation and/or environmental education for kids. Nature’s Path EnviroKids needs Project Submissions and voters. When voting, find a project you’re passionate about that work to empower the children of today to change their present and future world and to protect endangered species and environments.

You will be responsible for local non-profits winning grants of up to $20,000 but only if you vote before the deadline of December 9th.

All the Contest Details can be found on Facebook.

Thanks to Nature’s Path for continuing to be awesome in my book, and saving the environment.

Season of Giving Day 26: Help Zoos And Aquariums

November 26, 2011 by Momstart 2 Comments

By Summer:

If you have a house of animals lovers like I do (my sons, 2YO and 4YO), give to your local zoos and aquariums. Zoo and aquariums don’t only offer entertainment but they offer animal care to creatures both domestic and foreign. Ways to give to your zoo or aquarium include:

· Attendance – GO! GO! GO! By simply showing a zoo or aquarium to your children you’re supporting their animal causes. If you want to take your attendance to the next level support your local zoo and/or aquarium by purchasing a membership. Memberships also make a great eco gift.

Omaha-0058-20110614

· Adopt – Many zoos and aquariums offer animal “adoption” which is actually more like sponsorship. This helps support a specific animals for a year; you’d help feed and maintain the animal with your adoption. Your zoo or aquarium might also offer thank you gifts for your support, such as a picture and profile of your animal, a stuffed animal representation of your animal, special membership admissions and packages, year’s calendar, and other swag.

· Education – Through camps and special programs your zoo and aquarium will not only help peak the interest of animal lovers, but they will inform them as well. Thus helps the cycle of loving it so much you want to help which usually means giving, whether that’s of time or money.

· Volunteer – Nothing is really more valuable than time. Time is money but almost anyone can give money; to show you really care, give time! Check with your local zoo or aquarium for information on how you or our family can volunteer. Keep in mind so dedicated hours of training may be required. There is also usually a minimum age requirement due to responsibility.

  1. Woodland Park Zoo-0019-20100430

If you’re not sure what is available in your area check out the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). AZA also offers the same opportunities presented above though if you get or give a membership the pass applies to all the associations’ partnering zoos and aquariums nationally.

Get involved locally and give to your zoo or aquarium. This is a great cause as it’s fun at ANY age!

Season of Giving Day 25: Small Business Saturday

November 25, 2011 by Momstart 4 Comments

It’s now a month before Christmas and everyone is going to be shopping shopping shopping. While you’re out and about this holiday season be sure to find ways to give to others in need. So far this month we’ve provided you with 24 different ways to give this holiday season. You’ll find it’s quite easy to make a difference in someone’s life. Today we’re bringing you our 25th way to help in this season of giving.

By Summer:

image

With Black Friday and mega deal shopping over on Friday before 12noon, don’t forget the small boutique shops “reserved” for the second annual Small Business Saturday. You may wonder what this has to do with giving; this is one way to give back to your community. Small shops use to be the make-up of a town’s survival; small businesses are your neighbors’ survival as they are someone’s bread and butter. Small Business Saturday is sponsored by American Express and as of now a little fewer than 3 million Facebook supporters. You can show your support by Liking the Small Business Saturday Facebook page and don’t forget to shop.

Season of Giving Day 23: The Swiss Colony

November 23, 2011 by Momstart 3 Comments

By Summer,

The Swiss Colony is a family owned on-line store; I know them best for their desserts – cakes, candies, chocolates, and sugar free – though they offer cheeses, meats, nuts for food items, and also offer clothing and home gift items as well. This year The Swiss Colony is celebrating 85 years!

Got a party or want to send a cute dessert? The Swiss Colony can help with that! Send or bring their 72 Petits Fours which include 12 Royal Vanilla, 12 Carrot Spice, 12 Strawberry Shortcake, 12 Lemon Mist, 12 Red Velvet, and 12 Chocolate Fudge mini cakes. What a tasty, cute way to impress anyone. The 72 Petits Fours cost $29.95.Swiss Colony Gingerbread House

Right now when you purchase the 72 Petit Fours The Swiss Colony will donate a gingerbread house with some added candies to the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, Inc. [NACHRI] for delivery to a hospitalized child in need of holiday cheer. NACHRI and The Swiss Colony also work together to have the gingerbread house delivered to a child in a hospital in your area; I love that gifts stay local! The Swiss Colony has had this program for 20 years now and has donated more than 200,000 houses. Each recipient of the 72 Petits Fours will also receive a thank you card from the gifting hospital to the gingerbread house donation.

Swiss Colony

The 72 Petits Four would complete any spread: on a tiered tray for desserts at a baby shower or tea party, bring them to book club, use them as a lunchbox surprise dessert for your spouse or children, eat one (or three) as a daily reward to yourself when your child is in a nap, or wish your colleagues a happy holiday season.Swiss Colony logo

Keeping up with The Swiss Colony on Facebook and Twitter will gain you access to their contests, giveaways and any special coupon codes.

Season of Giving Day 20: From my Addiction to Giving

November 20, 2011 by Momstart 4 Comments

By Summer

I just might be addicted. I’m a gold member of Starbucks and I just got “scolded” by my husband for reloading my card too often. I love when the holiday flavors return. I love then the red cups return. I love when there are new gifts on Starbucks’ shelves.INDIVISIBLE Braclets

One of the new items at the Starbucks’ registers reflects this season of giving, they’re the INDIVISIBLE bracelets which support Opportunity Finance Network to help create jobs in the USA by financing underserved community businesses such as small businesses, microenterprises, nonprofit organizations, commercial real estate developers, and affordable housing developers. This initiative is called Create Jobs for USA.

The Starbucks Foundation donated the first $5,000,000 and you can give by donating $5 when you pick up your next drink. Best of all 100% of your donation goes to creating and sustaining jobs in the United States. For your $5 donation you also get this fun little bracelet that is itself “Made in the USA”. I bought one through the drive thru at the beginning of November, and then my babysitter liked it so I got her one too. What a fun gift to give! You can also donate online and have support bracelets sent to you. If it matters to you, your gift to help the Create Jobs for USA is tax deductible as Opportunity Finance Network is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

You can fine Create Jobs for USA on their own website, on Facebook and on Twitter.

Season of Giving Day 19: Heifer International Pass On The Gift

November 20, 2011 by Momstart 6 Comments

By Summer,

Heifer International is a giving non-profit organization that was founded on the though, “children don’t need a cup, they need a cow.” Founder Dan West created Heifer for Relief and in 1944 was sending the first shipment of 17 heifers to Puerto Rico in order to provide families with livestock as well as training. The heifers would then supply milk and continuous support for the country as the heifer’s offspring was then to be passed on as a donation to another family. So the gift of food is never-ending.

Season Of Giving Day 17: Schools Are Always in Need

November 17, 2011 by Momstart 6 Comments

By Summer

If you’re a parent, chances are you have a child in school, even if it’s a toddler group or preschool. The thing is schools always need money. ALWAYS! Give and find ways to give savvy.

Toddler Groups / Co-ops – Find out if your program is a 501(c), this will help increase your giving power. Your work might be able to match your donation and/or use the tax deduction. These types of programs might also like to take your physical donations such as gently used books, toys and puzzles.

Woodinville Toddler Group-0002-20100308

Preschool / Kindergarten Prep – Your program might also be a 501(c), check with them and remember to match and/or use the tax deduction. Some programs have fundraisers, which actually fall on the parents, not the children! Some preschools will take physical donations of used books, toys, puzzles, and art supplies.

FWPreschool Dad's Day-0027-20110211

Elementary Schools – Most of their outside funds come from the PTA which will do multiple fundraisers a year to acquire funds to improve the school. Some schools also accept Box Tops for Education and Campbell’s Soup Labels, so collect and turn them in!

Middle School / Junior High – Different programs and clubs will accept private donations, such as rhetoric or band. Students at this age still end up doing fundraisers for the PTA or for extracurricular activities.

High School – This is all about private sponsorship. The yearbook offers ads for the parents of seniors, the newspaper and football programs offer ad space for profit, and uniforms are bought by the participant. Fundraisers are typically held inside the school where students are raising money from students, such as candy-grams at holidays like Halloween or Valentine’s Day. Find a place you’d want to give to your child’s high school or your alma mater.

College / University / Technical Schools – Sometimes you cringle at the money you spent to attend a higher education program where you feel it was worth it or not. Then about 2 years after graduation they want to contact you to donate to the alumni association, your particular program, a dean’s or chancellor’s fund, or other divisions. I’d actually encourage you to join your alumni association if your school has one. Also give at least annually, and if your school is a public or state school check out if the division you’re giving to is a 501(c) which means matching by companies and/or tax deductions.

2000.07.17 - Model Picture 1- Before

One more way you might be able to give money to your schools is to check with your human resources about getting paid to volunteer. My husband’s employer will pay an organization for each hour he volunteers for them. I don’t remember the pay rate, but he has to work 10+ hours within the year. Also the “deal” is non-transferable, so I can’t volunteer in his place.

Giving back to education is paying it forward for your children.

Season of Giving Day 16: Literacy: Libraries and Schools

November 16, 2011 by Momstart 5 Comments

By Summer:

Literacy is very important to me! Not just as a person but as a mom and teacher. Thanks to my resources at Mom Start we’re been able to supply books to a local school by requesting extra books from PR companies when writing reviews (not all companies are giving, special note is given at the bottom of a post for donated books); my family keeps the book we’ve used by reading and we give the extra book to the school I student taught at which has a high population of free or reduced lunches and is the school for a government subsidized housing area for refugees mainly from Laos and Thailand.

If you’d like to give literacy too, donate to your local classroom or library system.

51YVlINGcdL._SL500_AA300_[1]Libraries are more than hardcovers on shelves as you can borrow movies, music, eBooks, and browse databases all with a small free card! My library system also offers FREE community events and support services: homework help, English as a Second Language conversation groups, book readings, book signings and author readings, concerts, story time, storytelling programs such as puppet shows, summer reading programs, educator STARS workshops, computer classes, writing workshops, book sales, etc. I’ve used a fair share of resources as a teacher for my classroom, as a student for research, as a mom for their events and programming, and personally for books and eBooks.

If you want to give literacy try these options:

· Acquiring Books

Bloggers – Ask companies you work with to donate an extra book so you can also donate.

Parents – When the scholastic book orders come along order an extra $1 book or two. You can also think about donating the used books your child has out grown. Be sure to ask the group you plan to donate too if they need books. Then get the books to the principal or teacher. They could hand them out to children or the teacher might be able to use them as teacher’s classroom library is personally supplied, so donating a book to a classroom library can offer a resource for that grade level for several years.

Educators – I challenge you to give books to the children who need them. In my class there were students who wouldn’t bring back the library books they checked. These children need books at home.

· Donate new or used books

School – Contact local toddler groups or schools; see if they have a library in need of resources. Schools teachers and administrators might also have a giving program where they get books in the hands of students who couldn’t otherwise afford them.

Library – Check and see if your library offers books for sale. Mine has groups called Friends of the Library for each branch in my library system. By selling donated books they fund and help support their branch.

Food Bank – Some food banks will also accept books to hand out to patrons. They might only accept books during the holiday season to pass onto parents as presents. Check with your local food bank.

· Donate Money

Library – My library has a foundation to which monetary donations can be accepted.

Library Groups – My local library system offers a group called “Friends of the Library” which sponsors their city’s library branch. Anyone can join with a simple annual membership fee. The funds are used at the library of the chaptering city.

School – I don’t actually know if you can give money to a school or a school library directly. Donations can be made to private schools, but I don’t know how this works in a public school. On donations, if they are accepted, ask about designating your money to the library or the purchase of books.

School Groups – Giving through groups such as the PTA might be the best way to offer monetary support. Check with the PTA about what they do for the school’s literacy.

If you’re gifting your used books, don’t just give your child’s books away. Get your child involved! This is the perfect opportunity for your child to learn about giving. Explain to them why you feel this is the best thing for the books they own which are only collecting dust. If your child belongs to a group such as a scout troop try organizing a book drive so your child can see other children also giving. Not only are you giving, but you’re “recycling” these books to new users. An all-around win!
