PBS KIDS: Cat in the Hat Builds That

March 11, 2018 by Momstart Leave a Comment

I’m really starting to get into this app thing. I was slow to the roll, but am fully on board, for all of these education apps. I feel like if the kids are going to be on the devices let’s at least give them the opportunity to have an educational type app. PBS KIDS has created The Cat in the Hat Builds That! app.

The Cat in the Hat Builds That! app offers the second adaptive learning game from PBS KIDS, with personalization that empowers kids to make choices about their play-based experiences that enhance their learning. Like The Ruff Ruffman Show’s Fish Force, released in the fall of 2017, the adaptive game within the app offers experiences that provide real-time contextual feedback based on what just happened in the game, and shifts challenge sequences to adjust difficulty and match player ability.

More core features, below.

App features:

  • Fully customized backyard that grows the more you play
  • Ability for more than one child to save their own game and backyard progress
  • 3 multi-level games, including an adaptive game experience that progresses based on how a single user plays
  • 4 Cat in in the Hat inspired tools to help with science discoveries and observations including a magnifying Micromaboodle, a Doodlemaboodle sketch pad, the Snap-o-rama camera and a measuring Snaila-ma-bob
  • Video from THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! series, which offers preschoolers more ways to engage with the characters and science

In addition to the app release, kids and families can now watch new episodes of THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT!. The episodes air on PBS stations (check local listings) and the PBS KIDS 24/7 channel and live stream, and will also be available for free on pbskids.org and the PBS KIDS Video App.

It’s Martha Speaks Weeketh: All New Episodes Start Monday

June 14, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

June 16, that’s Monday, PBS KIDS and WGBH will be airing three all-new episodes of MARTHA SPEAKS during “Martha Speaketh Weeketh!” This week, you can watch your favorite talking dog, (My kids love Martha Speaks) she’s more than a talking dog she’s a canine linguist. We received a screener of a few episodes and some books. My kids go nuts over books. The books are already in their rooms and I’m pretty sure Zoe read them all very quickly. She’s such a super reader.

IMG_2007

The fun continues online with the brand new game, Martha’s Steaks. Children learn vocabulary as they make Martha’s furry friends hurdle, dash, soar, and tumble to catch treats through Martha’s dream-landscape of steaks, bacon, and drumsticks!

Thinking about when my kids first started watching the show they really thought if you could feed a dog alphabet soup it would start talking. I wonder how many kids in America tried feeding their dogs an alphabet.

IMG_2008

And there will be even more fun with Martha, here is the schedule line up. Tune in Starting Monday.

image

June 16th
Thou Callest Me a Dog
A dog speaking Shakespeare?  ‘Tis a consumation devoutly to be wished and achieved when Martha swallows Hamlet.  Never was a dog’s desire for meat so artfully expressed.
Martha’s Paper Chase
It’s the Town Crier deadline and Carolina needs a headline.  Hot on the trail for a story, and a biscuit, Senior Canine Reporter Martha stumbles into a scoop that screams front page: the whereabouts of Big Minnie.  But is exposing Minnie’s privacy worth the story?
June 17th
Alice Tells a Story
When Alice tells the story of how she got Nelson, her class is confused.  She ate pizza while playing hockey in an animal shelter?  With a little help from Helen and T.D., she might be able to tell it correctly, even if it is about cats…
Pirates and Princesses
Princesses Carolina, Alice and Helen needeth a castle.  Skipper Truman and First Mate T.D. are scouring the land for a ship.  The problem: Helen only has one tree house.  Who will prevail in the clash between bucanneers and royalty?
June 18th
Tomato, You Say
Why is there a tomato on T.D.’s shirt?  Helen’s eager to know.  Unfortunately, she’d have an easier time getting Martha to skip breakfast than getting a straight answer from T.D.  Will she ever find out?
Martha Questions
Is Martha only speaking in questions?  Why would that be?  Can Skits help her figure it out?  Did somebody put something funny in her soup?  Will the questions ever stop???
June 19th
Oh, Noooo!
Granny Flo’s Alphabet Soup is taking a licking from the competition, Oodles of Os. If Granny Flo goes out of business, how will Martha communicate? To increase sales, Helen, Martha, and T.D. set out to convince Granny Flo to advertise on the popular TV show, International Icon. Who will Granny Flo choose as a spokesperson?
Bye, Martha
Nefarious con artist Weaselgraft hatches a scheme to kidnap Martha by pretending to be Martha’s long-lost owner . . . from Poland. The family sniffs something suspicious, but why has Martha suddenly begun speaking Polish? Will they really have to say pozegnalny to Martha?
June 20th
Martha Sings
Martha wakes up singing and not just because she’s happy. She can’t stop! Helen and Martha visit the vet, some musicians, and an opera singer, trying to discover the source of her musical malady to no avail. Will Martha ever be able to talk without a tempo again?
TD Makes the Band
Everybody’s singing about Shecky the Sea Lion and it’s driving TD nuts! He could write a better song than that, and that’s just what he’s going to do! He recruits the gang to join his band and then sets out to write a hit song. . . . about Belgium? Inspiration strikes, but what will they do for an encore?

Educational And Fun To Watch: Wild Kratts Wildest Animal Adventures Box Set

September 11, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

By Dayna:

imageI’m picky about the TV my kids watch.  We don’t have cable, so PBS Kids shows provide our sole pool from which we pull their options.  I love that PBS’s shows are not only entertaining for my kids when I need them to have a distraction, but they also teach them valuable lessons.

Among these programs, Wild Kratts rises to the top of my list.  My four-year-old daughter loves animals.  Not just the cute, cuddly, kid-friendly kinds but also the ugly, scary, and weird.  When we go to the zoo, she heads straight for the tarantula and the python, so Wild Kratts feeds her desire to learn about nature’s creepiest crawlers.  I feel like her time spent in front of the TV isn’t wasted when she’s watching Wild Kratts because she always comes away with new tidbits of interesting information from the show.

So the recent release of the new box set, Wild Kratts: Wildest Animal Adventures, was cause for excitement in our family!  It did not disappoint!  With 20 episodes that left my little zoologist saying things like, “Mommy, did you know that honey badgers spray a stinky spray like skunks?”  and “Mommy, you were wrong, earthworms can’t drown in water,” her curiosity was fueled when I needed a few minutes to myself.  What’s better than that?  Only the conversations we had afterwards, where for once, she was the one teaching me.  Now that’s priceless.

About Dayna:

By Dayna:

Curious George is a big deal at our house.  Since we don’t let our kids watch a lot of TV, we’re picky about what they do watch, and Curious George is one of the few that makes the cut.  We’ve seen every episode at least twice and have the theme song memorized.  So when my daughter saw a new George movie advertised, it was cause for excitement!

Curious George Swings into Spring is a one-hour special, to be aired on PBS on Earth Day, April 22.  Without spoiling it for you, the story revolves around our favorite mischievous monkey experiencing spring fever and enjoying the great outdoors.  It didn’t disappoint my kids, so I’m sure it will satisfy your little critics, too!

What I like best about Curious George is that my kids always learn something without realizing they’re learning.  After watching the movie, my three-year-old suddenly decided to shake of the winter hibernation and started asking constantly to go play outside, a win for any mom!  We made a bird feeder out of a recycled plastic bottle, chopstick, and twine, and had fun watching our little feathered friends flock to it.  Then, we got some tomato seeds to plant and are looking forward to seeing them grow.  All around, Curious George provided a fun family day, watching the movie and then getting outside and enjoying what we learned! Thanks, PBS!

TUNE IN Tomorrow: Dinosaur Train Special Submarine Adventure

February 17, 2013 by Momstart 1 Comment

An all-new special from The Jim Henson Company’s hit series DINOSAUR TRAIN TOMORROW.  Everyone’s favorite Pteranodon family will dive into an underwater adventure in “Submarine Adventure.” The one-hour program will feature four new stories about sea creatures that lived during the “Age of Dinosaurs.” Preschoolers will meet new friends along the way – from Otto Ophthalmosaurus to Archelon turtles – as they learn about natural science, natural history and paleontology. As part of this multiplatform event, DINOSAUR TRAIN will also feature new content online and on mobile this February. The special will also be available on DVD starting February 19.

image

“PBS KIDS strives to use media to light a spark – a thirst for learning that will empower kids to actively pursue their interests long after the screen is turned off,” said Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Programming, PBS. “DINOSAUR TRAIN leads kids on this path of exploration with content that is fun and educational, like the ‘Submarine Adventure’ special, which will engage kids in learning natural science and paleontology concepts, while also inspiring them to embark on their own learning adventures in the world around them.”

Here are some additional ways for you and your readers to get involved in the special:

  • Take a fun DINOSAUR TRAIN Facebook quiz and test your dino knowledge: to.pbs.org/DinoTrainSub
  • View the special’s trailer on YouTube: http://youtu.be/2XcDhownuWg
  • Access special GetGlue Stickers: http://getglue.com/stickers/pbs_kids/dinosaur_train_submarine_adventure_coming_soon

On-air Special Program Descriptions:

“Otto Ophthalmosaurus”

When the Pteranodon family takes the Dinosaur Train under the sea to visit their friend Elmer Elasmosaurus, they learn that the Elasmosaurus family is leaving the station to follow their food – the fish. Buddy wants to follow, but the train tunnel doesn’t go that way – so Mr. Conductor decides to take the family in a brand-new invention, the Dinosaur Train Submarine! On their journey, they meet a marine reptile called Otto Ophthalmosaurus, who guides the submarine deeper than it’s ever been, and even helps them find their way out of a sea cave.

“Shoshana Shonisaurus”

The Pteranodon family goes under the sea again to ride the Dinosaur Train Submarine – this time they go to meet Shoshana Shonisaurus, an enormous marine reptile that’s something between a dolphin and a whale. Since Shoshana loves to dive very deep, Shiny has a problem with following her to the bottom of the sea. Shoshana kindly helps Shiny get over her fear of diving deep.

“Maisie Mosasaurus”

The Pteranodon family goes back underwater in the Dinosaur Train Submarine and meets Maisie and Marvin Mosasaurus, a daughter and father who are huge, fast-swimming lizards with flippers. Maisie and Shiny bond when they discover neither likes to go deep in the water. The Pteranodons and Mosasaurus have a great time near the ocean’s surface, each family showing the other how they hunt and catch fish to eat.

“A Sea Turtle Tale”

The Pteranodon family is on the beach watching small eggs hatch and baby Archelon turtles emerge and start to swim away.  The family and Mr. Conductor get into the Dinosaur Train Submarine and follow the baby Archelons, who discover their own facts of nature – that their mother doesn’t stay with them after they’re born and that they will grow up to be giant-sized sea turtles.

Online and Mobile Content:

Both full episodes and clips from “Submarine Adventure” will be available on the PBS KIDS Video Player at PBSKIDS.org/video and on the PBS KIDS Video App beginning February 19.

Stride Rite Curious George PBS Kids Party $50 Giveaway

December 3, 2012 by Momstart 259 Comments

Today we got to have a fun play date where we previewed some brand new Curious George shows! My eldest, 5, has always loved Curious George so it was a happy opportunity for her. She has inducted her younger sister into the show too. It is great for me to have something they can both watch and enjoy (30 minutes of “quiet” time to cook anyone?)

clip_image001[4]clip_image006

I have been a fan of Curious George ever since my eldest was 1 and I was ok with her watching some TV. I’ve had the DVR set up to record shows (on rotation) for over 2 years now! There are 2 episodes in a half hour slot and each episode ends with young children solving real math/science problems. In each episode George solves problems by subtly using math and science with objects that he finds around him – another thing I like about the show: it teaches children to care for the environment by recycling and using regular things around the house in a different ways. And of course, it introduces kids to nature!clip_image002clip_image005

The children got to run around the house and be curious themselves. There were a few discoveries of their own to be made! They colored in some butterflies, notice some symmetry going on! They got to measure different things around the house with some rulers. They discovered that the butterfly’s body is different lengths at different points. They got to measure their own heights with a cute growth chart! Who was the tallest?clip_image003

Season 7 premiers THIS MONDAY, December 3rd, on your local PBS channel. Curious George takes a visit to Australia! If you’ve watched Curious George before it’s definitely up to the same standard as previous seasons! clip_image001[6]clip_image007

I hope you enjoy the new shows as much as we did! And get out and get discovering!

The Dinosaur Train Christmas Collection Pajamas, Books, A Holiday With Buddy

The Dinosaur Train Gets Ready for Christmas: A Holiday With Buddy

Review By: Ashley

clip_image002In our house, we can all sing along to the Dinosaur Train theme song, know the neighbors at Pteranodon Terrace, and can name LOTS of dinosaurs. That’s why, when I found out about the Dinosaur Train holiday book and PJs, I was probably just as excited as my 2 year old son! It’s hard not to get attached to these lovable little dinosaurs on PBS Kids. It’s a show that I don’t have to worry about Atticus watching. The messages are good and the stories are appropriate for even young children.

Just in time for the holidays, there is a great selection of Dinosaur Train PJs ready for the stomping feet in your home. I received a three piece set of Dinosaur Train Buddy & Pteranodon Friends Pajamas from American Marketing Enterprises (AME). They are so incredibly soft! These are available at webundies.com, with alternative styles, including the Dinosaur Train Infant & Toddler Boy’s Footed Pajamas at Kmart and Kmart.com.

We also received a pair of slippers featuring Buddy the T-Rex. I love that they have small non skid dots on the soles. Since my little dinosaur is always on the run, this is a pretty important feature for us.

clip_image004

Especially being a former teacher, books that go along with special occasions and holidays are some of my favorite things. A Holiday With Buddy is a great addition to anyone’s Christmas book collection. This colorful 32-page paperback book is great for read-aloud holiday fun as it follows Buddy and his family on their search for the biggest Cretaceous conifers, better known to us as Christmas trees, they can find to decorate for the holiday. The story is guaranteed to get everyone in the holiday spirit (and makes a wonderful holiday gift, too) and can be used to discuss when your family will decorate your home for the holidays and the significance of those decorations. (Recommended for ages 3 and up. MSRP: $3.99. Available wherever books are sold.)

We were sent and advanced copy of The Cat In The Hat Know A Lot About Christmas. I was baby sitting and the kids had just come in from school and wanted to warm up. So I popped in The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas. They all sat down and watched it, and the kids were ages 2 to 5. My four and five year old didn’t move and the three year old didn’t move much but the 2 year old couldn’t sit still that long. However, for some 2 year olds that can’t sit still they can sit still for The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That.

The Cat in The Hat knows about everything it seems as he takes Nick and Sally on an adventure with a lost reindeer. As they try to get him home they go to the wrong stop and learn even more about Christmas. They do have a great time with mom’s permission of course and end up safely at home.

It’s a cute little movie!

Kids Love Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

October 27, 2012 by Momstart 18 Comments

My kids have the PBS app on their iPad where they can watch Sprout shows, PBS children’s shows on their iPad. I caught them last night watching Daniel Tiger’s neighborhood. I’ve also heard from one of my neighbors who has an over active little girl who will only sit and watch Daniel Tiger’s neighborhood. Everything else she has no interest in. I think it’s quite cute, I mean it’s Mr. Rogers modernized for kids.

image

According to a recent PBS KIDS survey of parents of 2-6 year-olds, 86 percent of parents believe they have the most influence in preparing children for kindergarten and teaching a child social-emotional skills.

The survey stated that parents rely on a variety of tools, including parenting books/magazines (47%), PBS KIDS (46%), online parenting sites (46%), and other moms/parents (45%), to give them guidance on preparing their children for school.  As was found in the survey, PBS KIDS can be a viable resource for parents, providing tips and advice for dealing with social emotional issues, such as how to handle potty training, problem solving or teaching your child how to share.

PBS KIDS’ new show DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD can be a unique “secret tool” for any parent’s tool box.  The show is designed to help support a child’s social-emotional development and to give kids practical strategies for dealing with various emotions.

PBS KIDS has developed five simple tips, adapted from the new series DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, which launched earlier this month, to help parents support their children’s social-emotional development, and to give kids practical strategies for dealing with various emotions:

Tip #1: When your child is disappointed about something, help him/her find something positive about the situation to focus on instead.

Tip #2: When your child gets angry, encourage him/her to take a deep breath and count to four.

Tip #3: Encourage your child to keep trying when he/she is struggling with a challenging task.

Tip #4: When your child is feeling apprehensive about a new experience – like going to the doctor or starting school – talk to him/her about what to expect beforehand.

Tip #5: Teach your child patience by coming up with activities to do while you’re waiting, like singing a song or playing a quiet game.
