Nutrisystem Challenge: Week 10

Beeb:

Current weight: 136.4 lbs
Weight Last Week: 136.8 lbs
Weekly Weight Lost: .4 lbs
Starting weight: 141.6 lbs

Jai:

Current weight: 185.2 lbs
Weight Last Week: 185.4 lbs
Weekly Weight Lost: .2 lbs
Starting weight: 197 lbs

During this week of our Nutrisystem journey, I had a loss of .4 pounds while Jai had a loss of .2 pounds. My weight had been 136 pounds on Friday, but I think the bottle of wine I bought that night may have added the extra .4. šŸ˜‰ But a loss is a loss is a loss and we are both happy. Jai has been doing an awesome job of going for consistent jogs through the week, while my working out last week was a lot more sporadic. I’ve been feeling really wiped out and not well from a lack of sleep, and I’m trying to get back on a better schedule – I can definitely feel the difference when I’m less active, because it impacts my energy and overall feeling of health. I did try to take the evenings to relax a bit over this weekend, but it’s been hard to get to sleep even when I’m not working super late because your body gets all thrown out of whack. But it’s all about course correction and adjusting. I’m trying to balance my career with the whole rest of my life, including health, and I don’t really know how to not be a workaholic – like I said to Jai yesterday, I’ve been “Me” for 30 years, and I don’t know how to be anyone else, so the changes I need to make for my well-being are not always intuitive to me at all. But I’m working on it and I’m taking much better care of myself than I was a year ago!

We’re so glad to be on Nutrisystem and have one less thing to stress about – not having to worry about making food frees me up to work on all of these other core reasons behind my sometimes-poor health, which is what has made the longterm change for me.

The time is flying by as we mark month two on Nutrisystem! In this month’s video, we discuss how our energy levels have increased:

I am honestly feeling physically better than I have in years. Because of following this eating plan, we’re getting balanced portions of food at regular times, fresh vegetables, fruit, and more water, which helps fuel me with enough energy to do what I can being more active. And by “Do what I can” I mean “Get in a little exercise before completely collapsing”. šŸ˜‰ Because my knee strength has just continued to improve since last year, I can really feel a difference now when I eat right and exercise. When you are immobilized by injury for so long, you lose so much muscle tone that it takes a startling amount of time to get back in healthy shape even once you’re able to walk around normally. Having good fuel for my body has helped me cope with an erratic schedule and still have energy despite very, very little sleep recently due to things out of my control.

One thing that has helped a lot is sticking to an easy shopping list for SmartCarbs and PowerFuels – if you want lots of variety on Nutrisystem, you can certainly have it, but we tend to buy the same things just to reduce the amount of shopping we have to do. And although it seems counter-intuitive for “Super Coupon Girl“, we’ve actually been buying pre-washed, pre-chopped veggies. GASP! Yes, it would be more cost-effective to buy and chop my own. But you know what? I got 4 hours of sleep last night. I’m not staying up until 4 AM to chop a bag of darn vegetables. šŸ˜‰ Learning to accept what I can’t realistically do and letting go of perfectionism has helped me a great deal in continuing on a healthy path. We like to buy bags of chopped broccoli and cauliflower, sugar snap peas, and baby carrots for dipping in salsa and hummus. It’s really tasty, encourages us to fill up on veggies, and can act as a crunchy snack alternative. We also love fat free yogurt and peanuts/raisins for travel snack bags.

Last month’s goal of getting more rest has been a complete bust, but I have kept with my goal of drinking more water, so hey, half ain’t bad! Making big changes is all about taking small steps – or at least for me, as I have the tendency to try and do everything “Right” and burn out because it’s too unrealistic. Sticking to the approach of doing as much as I can when I can do it has allowed me to still make changes and allow them to snowball and turn into greater changes.

What small health or fitness goals are you working on this month?

Nutrisystem Challenge: Week 7

Beeb:

Current weight: 137 lbs
Weight Last Week: 137.6 lbs
Weekly Weight Lost: .6 lbs
Starting weight: 141.6 lbs

Jai:

Current weight: 186.8 lbs
Weight Last Week: 187.6 lbs
Weekly Weight Lost: .8 lbs
Starting weight: 197 lbs

Jai and I both noticed that we were feeling really good physically this week. In the last few days, I’ve been noticing that I have a lot more energy, and I know that’s a direct result of eating better and being more active, since I’m certainly not getting any more sleep. šŸ˜‰ (Not that sleep isn’t important! I’m working on getting more rest, but I’m not there yet!) I also feel “Lighter” – less bogged down, and I can feel a little more core strength; I’m also seeing a little more muscle definition. Jai has also been more energetic and seeing progress in his workouts.

What I think is noteworthy is that we’re seeing these positive benefits without doing everything perfectly. Yes, we both work out, but since we have a gym in the home it’s flexible and neither of us have necessarily spent a huge amount of time working out. In fact, the last few months we’ve both felt like we were just going through the motions – I was feeling bummed recently because nothing seems to have been going the way I planned this year. I had planned to start Nutrisystem and eat everything perfectly, drink all my water, get lots of sleep, do killer workouts everyday…I’m sure this sounds very familiar to everyone reading. šŸ˜‰ Unfortunately, everything convened at once in my personal life and left me with very little time to actually do all of these wonderful things. I felt like everything was going really slowly and like I’d squandered time – but what’s interesting is how now, 7 weeks in, everything seems to be snapping into place more. We may have been going through the motions, but that was enough to keep us with it until we started to see the positive physical change. As I said to Jai: You can start a diet and exercise regime and have it be months before you notice any significant change, while a bucket of fried chicken and beer always causes am immediate positive reaction, which is why healthy living can be such a challenge. šŸ˜‰

But the nice thing about healthier choices is that once you finally do see a difference, it starts to snowball. Suddenly, I have more energy for everything, which means I’m able to work out more, which will just give me more energy. Sometimes, all I can do is the bare minimum – but sometimes, that’s enough to get you in the right direction. Even if it feels pointless at times, it does eventually pay off and lead to greater and greater changes down the road.

Nutrisystem Couples Challenge: Week 6

Starting weight: 197 lbs

Can you believe we’re already 6 weeks into our Nutrisystem challenge? Louise and I have both been traveling a lot, which poses its own challenges to staying on track, but we’re all doing really well! When I travel, I pack Nutrisystem bars and bags of homemade trail mix as my SmartCarb/PowerFuels while I’m en route, and then try to eat as well as possible during my trips. One of the tips I remember reading in Nutrisystem’s Dining Out Guide a while ago is that you should ask for a box when you order food at a restaurant and put half of it away as soon as your meal arrives. I think that strategy really helps, because during my LA trip last week, I overate at every meal because I wasn’t eating on schedule due to my activities and I would end up so hungry; and when a big pile of food is shoved in front of you when you’re starving, what do you think is going to happen? šŸ˜‰

In contrast, I went to a restaurant to celebrate a graduation over the weekend, and since that food was served “Family style”, I purposely put a very small amount on my plate even though I was famished because I literally hadn’t eaten all day. I knew that there would be plenty left for seconds if I was still hungry, and unsurprisingly, what looked like a small amount was more than enough for me to feel totally full so I didn’t even need another helping. I was proud of myself for that!

I wasn’t quite so good when it came to having a few celebratory drinks over the course of the week. But hey, I went for light beer and rum mixed with diet cola, so at least I saved some calories there, right? šŸ˜‰

In terms of exercise, I know we’ve all been doing a lot – on days when I didn’t have access to a gym while on the road, I did a LOT of walking so I got my exercise in that way. I’m very pleased with how well everything is working out, even with me being on the road; since I’m traveling more frequently these days, it’s great to know that I have Nutrisystem as my rock to keep me on track and help guide me through making the best choices possible while still enjoying myself and living life. I’m excited for this summer!

What are your tips to maintaining good eating habits while on the road?

Louise wrote a great post yesterday about her experience so far – click here to check it out!

I’m down 2.4 pounds from last week and at my lowest weight thus far since starting the challenge, while Jai lost .8 pounds. I’m feeling good – the scale is moving in the right direction and I got some good workouts in last week using our home equipment. I can feel my core getting stronger and it feels good to be back to a more “Normal” healthy routine!

Jai told me that he has been struggling to keep momentum because he’s been feeling hungry, and I asked him if he’d been measuring out his portions for SmartCarbs and PowerFuels. Turns out, he hasn’t, and has been alternatively cheating himself out of all his food allotment at times and eating slightly bigger portions at others. I showed him how I measure out one of my snacks – yogurt and berries – as an example, and he said, “Wow, I get all that?!” So I think that was a helpful insight for him and important reminder that it really does make a difference when you measure out your portions rather than eyeball them. Yes, it’s less convenient sometimes to stop and measure out your portion, but I think it’s well worth it to not be hungry! I measure everything out and find that it’s actually too much food for me – I’m not able to eat everything they recommend because it’s just too much for me, and I’m not going to eat until I feel sick. So hopefully practicing that will help Jai go from hungry to full since he won’t be missing out on his food allowance! Plus, we have a food counselor that we can call on any time with questions if we encounter stumbling blocks or just want to talk.

Onwards and upwards to next week!

The Truth About My Dieting #NSNation

May 12, 2014 by Momstart 6 Comments

I have to admit my heart hasn’t been in it like I thought it would be until today. I’ve been working with Nutrisystem now for a month and well for me it hasn’t gone well. It’s not because their system doesn’t work…their system does work. It’s because I haven’t been working the system.

Ahh this is where the list of excuses comes in and yes they are all excuses.

I’ve been traveling…EXCUSE

I’ve been unable to say no and un able to stop myself….EXCUSES

I’ve been going out to eat …Excuses

I’ve been weak. Really really weak.

The Nutrisystem plan allows you to eat every three hours six times a day if you want to eat dessert. They lay out what your options are for snacks and for breakfast, lunch and dinner you eat their prepared meals. You add the veggies and you can have as many of those as you want. I started out ok, and I lost four pounds but this last trip and this last week and a half I bounced on the scale in the wrong direction. I HAVE TO CHANGE IT.

Today I’m going to do it. I went to the gym and worked out for an hour and a half and I’m going to make myself do it more. I’m going to lose the weight I need to lose and I’m going to push and push until it’s off. My goal….I want to look good in this bathing suit by August!

WP_20140403_22_30_00_Pro

This photo is embarrassing and I wasted an entire month of dieting opportunity so now I have to work harder over the next two months. I’m printing out this photo and posting it on the fridge.

Twas the Night Before Our Diet #NSNation

March 29, 2014 by Momstart 8 Comments

Twas the night before our diet and my husband and I looked about,

We weren’t sure what to do, but felt it was a night of fat Tuesday foo

We decided to feast and to be merry and to have one last cocktail berry

Because tomorrow we will be following the Nutrisystem plan for me!

Ok, ok enough with the poetry, yes tonight is the last night before my husband and I go hard core. We’re going to be part of the Nutrisystem #NSNAtion bloggers.

I'm proud to be a #NSNationBlogger. Click here to start your weight loss journey!

My husband and I are doing this together and we’re going to keep each other accountable. We have received plenty of ā€œReady-To-Goā€ items and plenty of Frozen Items for the next month. I’m hoping that over the next three months we will learn to appreciate fruits and vegetables as snacks and be able to jump start our stagnant metabolisms. We both have sitting desk jobs and need to find ways to carve out exercise. We have also been granted VIP access to the Nutrisystem Community so we can use the Tools & Trackers, interact with other Nutrisystem members, create a personal profile and chat on our Discussion Boards. Hopefully with all this accountability my husband and I will both be back on the track to living and eating healthy.

But for tonight we’re going to be naughty and splurge. I’ll check in soon with our starting measurements.
