September 1st through the 7th is National Childhood Injury Prevention Week. Parents have a huge job looking after their little ones and keeping them safe – there are so many things to think about and child-proof, many of which wouldn’t be obvious immediately. For example, I just learned that if a child swallows a coin lithium battery, it can cause chemical burns. Did you know that? I didn’t, and according to a recent survey by Energizer, neither did 62% of the parents they talked to.
That’s why Energizer has developed special packaging for their coin lithium batteries, following the Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines for child-resistant packaging. They challenged us to compare Energizer Coin Lithium Battery packaging to the competition in order to see which one would be more difficult for a child to get into.
I enlisted Jai’s help for this project, and gave him the first package of batteries to try. These batteries are from a competing brand, and have standard packaging. He was able to tear the package open with his fingers and get to the battery pretty easily.
Next, I gave him a package of Energizer Coin Lithium Batteries. He tried to tear this one open with his hands, and exerted a fair bit of force, but all it did was bend the package.
To open them, he needed a pair of scissors to cut the back of the packaging and pop the battery out – I can see that it would make it that much more difficult for kids to rip open the packet. You’ll also notice that there is a sticker on the battery itself, warning parents of the danger these batteries would pose if swallowed.
I was also provided with a gift card to use for picking up safety items. With fall & winter right around the corner, these are my picks for some practical items to check and/or replace:
- Smoke Detector: Now is a good time to check your smoke detectors and make sure they are in working order and have working batteries.
- Battery Charger: When winter storms hit, we use a lot of rechargeable batteries to power flashlights, lanterns, and radios.
- Flashlights: And speaking of flashlights, how many do you have in your house?
Seaside is notorious for its power outages, and no matter how many flashlights we buy, we never seem to have enough. I like to keep them dotted all through the house, so that it’s easier to find our way when the power goes out. I’m loving this Energizer Weatheready 2-in-1 LED Light that I got, because it doubles as a lantern with one click – it puts out a decent amount of light, which will be helpful when I’m fumbling my way through the next power outage this winter. 😉
Speaking of fumbling through the dark, I’ve been thinking recently that it would be good to put out a nightlight so that it will be easier for my guests (And me!) to find their way if they have to get up during the night to use the restroom. I picked this Sleeping Beauty nightlight because it matches my Cinderella alarm clock! 😉
Thanks to my package from Energizer, I’m feeling prepared for autumn weather with a new safety toolkit before summer is even over – yeah! As you get ready to load those holiday gadgets with batteries, just remember the “4 S’s”: Store coin lithium batteries & devices away from the reach of children, Secure the battery compartment, Select battery packaging that is child-resistant, and Share this info with other parents.
