Kikkoman Make Haste Slowly Heritage Recipe Contest Giveaway

February 13, 2013 by Momstart 175 Comments

Kikkoman made a movie about their long standing traditions. A family business to this day, Kikkoman’s growth has been inspired and guided by a family creed, a set of 16 articles passed down for nineteen generations. This creed speaks to the core values that have enabled Kikkoman to survive and thrive for more than 300 years. Directed by Academy Award™ nominated filmmaker Lucy Walker, Make Haste Slowly: The Kikkoman Creed tells the story of the brand’s rich history and the family creed that shaped it into the company it is today.

The Locations in the movie:

Walworth, WI
imageWhen selecting the site for Kikkoman’s first manufacturing facility in the United States, Yuzaburo Mogi and his father chose Walworth not only for its rich farmland, but also for its welcoming residents and hardworking, diligent workforce. When the first wave of Kikkoman employees arrived in Walworth, they spread out within the community, quickly adapting to American culture and developing close friendships with the locals.

Noda, Japan
imageTo escape the shogun siege on Osaka Castle nearly four centuries ago, Shige Maki and her infant son fled to Noda, a small farming community. It was there, nestled between the Edo and Tone Rivers, that Shige created the original soy sauce recipe still used by Kikkoman to this day. Noda’s abundance of natural resources and proximity to Tokyo made it the ideal location for Kikkoman’s Japanese production facility, where it still remains.

About Lucky Walker

Lucy Walker grew up in London, England, and graduated from the prestigious Oxford University before winning a Fulbright scholarship to attend the Graduate Film Program at NYU. Since then, her five documentaries have earned more than fifty awards, including two Academy Award™ nominations for her work on Waste Land and The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom.

Heritage Recipe Contest

My family and I love Kikkoman products and use them all the time. My kids love the Ponzu sauce and use it as a salad dressing. I love it too, it’s a great addition to a recipe. We’ve even used it in our Turkey. Kikkoman Soy Sauce is also a great way to make your turkey it keeps it moist and gives it a lot of flavor. Because we love Kikkoman so much we’re hosting a recipe contest.

Mango Salmon for Ponzu de Mayo

May 4, 2010 by Momstart 244 Comments

Print Think Ponzu is only for Japanese food? Then think again! Get ready to prepare a delicious Cinco de Mayo meal into a ¡Kikko de Mayo Fiesta! with the help of this fat-free “secret” ingredient – Kikkoman Ponzu!

When contacted by Kikkoman to host a Ponzu de Mayo celebration, I had to consider that is Ponzu. I use and love cooking with soy sauce, but what is Ponzu sauce?

Ponzu, a citrus seasoned dressing and sauce, delivers the perfect balance of salty, tangy and sweet, helping to bring out delicious citrus flavors in Mexican dishes such as carne asada, fajitas and even salsa!  image

How to make Mango Salmon

ingredients:

Mangos (frozen or fresh)
Ponzu Sauce
Lime Juice
Brown Sugar
Salmon (frozen or fresh, probably better with fresh)

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

imageIn a small bowl, mix 3 tablespoons of Ponzu citrus sauce, 2 tablespoons of lime juice, and one tablespoon of brown sugar.

Then mix all of the ingredients until the brown sugar is dissolved.

Place the salmon in a oven safe baking dish and pour two cups of mangos on top of the salmon. image

Then pour the juice mixture over the mangos and salmon.

Cook for 20 minutes, or until the salmon reaches the appropriate temperature.

The fish wasn’t very good but it was frozen. Cooking with fresh fish is something that I fear, bones, skin, smell. I did however, love the juice mixture. The ponzu sauce is quite tasty. I never thought of adding lemon flavor to Soy Sauce, and then adding more lime on top of that. It was delicious. My son loved the fish, the mangos all of it. My daughter was like me and just loved the sauce, I saw her using her finger to get the rest of the leftover juice.

More About Ponzu:

Kikkoman sponsored an early turkey dinner at my house. I cooked it and it was the best turkey I have ever made. Having a brand new oven that works might have helped it come out a beautiful brown color.

IMG_3127 I didn’t follow their directions entirely. I mixed up some Soy Sauce, butter and water and injected as much as I could into the turkey. Then cooked it in my convection oven and it cooked in a few hours. Carved it up and it was the most juicy turkey I have ever made. It was wonderful. My husband’s favorite turkey ever. We absolutely loved the turkey and all the flavor that was in it.

IMG_3128They sent me some recipes to use up the left overs. However, I couldn’t find the one I was looking for so I made Turkey Poppy Seed which is a family recipe that I love. The left overs were delicious but my husband wasn’t so excited by the combination. He said it was because he was expecting chicken, I didn’t tell him that I used Turkey until after I saw his expression. Ooops. I can’t wait to make another one so that I can use all the panko crumbs they sent me.
