Late Night Snack with Jimmy Dean Hickory Smoked Turkey Breast

August 7, 2014 by Momstart 1 Comment

This is a partnered post, our opinions are our own.

I spent the last two weeks of July traveling. We went to San Francisco, then we went from there straight to New York. Then I came home for only one night. That night, well that day was a long day of traveling. You know going from one coast to the other takes about six hours on the airplane. And you must know that airplane food is not that great. So when I got home that night, I was HUNGRY. I wanted something quick because the next day I had to leave again, so I had to unpack, repack and get some sleep.

Jimmy Dean had sent me a selection of their new individual serving frozen products to test out and I grabbed one of them. I had four to choose from, the Jimmy Dean Hickory Smoked Turkey Breast, The Grilled Steak, The Golden Roasted Turkey and The Barbeque Pork Sandwich. The decision was difficult because they all looked good. I grabbed the Jimmy Dean Hickory Smoked Turkey Breast, threw it in the microwave (To heat one sandwich: Remove sandwich from pouch and wrap in a paper towel. Microwave on HIGH for 35 to 40 seconds or until hot.) and it was ready in no time at all and it was really good.

IMG_2161

Not only was it packed with flavor but the bread was cooked amazingly. The sharp cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon on the country bun was just amazing. I have to say that I ate it so quickly I forgot that I needed to take a picture of it for review.

image

Because I had to travel some more I gave the rest of the products to my contributor Heather. Heather took them home and had a fun “Plate Date” with her family. You can read the review of the other new Jimmy Dean products, The Grilled Steak, The Golden Roasted Turkey and The Barbeque Pork Sandwich.

Granny Ev’s Chicken Pilau Recipe – Featuring Hillshire Farms and Jimmy Dean

Granny Ev’s Chicken Pilau Recipe – Featuring Hillshire Farms and Jimmy Dean

By: Ashley

Since I had such a great time meeting our friends at Jimmy Dean and Hillshire Farms this weekend, I wanted to share a family recipe that uses BOTH types of sausage. Yep, that right! One dish, 2 kinds of sausage. Sounds good already, doesn’t it?!?

Anyone who knows my family knows exactly what Pilau is… though they might think it should be spelled PERLOW. It’s the rice, chicken, sausage goodness that my mom makes for… well… for everyone and everything. It is DELICIOUS. It’s a South Carolina dish and sometime called “Chicken Bog.” What Mom (aka Granny Ev) makes is actually more of a bog that a Pilau since Pilau usually comes with vegetables in it too, but whatever. It’s my mama’s Pilau (which used to be my Mama Pat’s Pilau) and it’s yummy!

clip_image002

So, without further ado, here is

Granny Ev’s Chicken Pilau Recipe

.Ingredients:
2 – 4 boneless skinless chicken breats halves (depending on size)
1 Hillshire Farms Smoked Turkey Sausage
1 lb Jimmy Dean Sage Sausage
1 1/2 c. rice (not fast cook… just regular white long grain rice)
3 c. chicken broth (can be low sodium/low fat)

Directions:

Boil the chicken. After it has cooled, pull the chicken apart into small pieces. Put aside until later.

Slice the smoked sausage and put into skillet along with a small amount of water (just enough to barely coat the bottom of the pan). Add the lb. of ground sausage to the skillet. Cook the sausages together until done. Drain the grease from the pan.

Return the skillet (with sausage) to the heat. Add 3 c. of chicken broth to pan. Add in 1 1/2 c. of rice. Bring liquid to a boil. You can add salt and pepper. Reduce heat and let simmer while covered so the rice will cook. Stir occasionally so the rice doesn’t stick. (Keep an eye on your rice and add more broth or water as it cooks. I almost always have to add more liquid.)

When the rice is pretty much finished, stir in your chicken. While on low heat, stir occasionally and let the chicken heat up. Once the rice is cooked, and the chicken is warm… EAT!

You should know that this is one of the only written down versions of this recipe that my family has. Trying to figure out how much of what actually went into this dish was CRAZY! That said, I think I’ve got it it pretty close to accurate. With anything I cook or write a recipe for though, make adjustments as you see fit. It’s a family recipe… which means you should make it special to YOUR family. =)

Maple Sausage Corn Bread Pudding Recipe

February 19, 2011 by Momstart 22 Comments

I’ve been trying to widen our meal plan using ingredients that we know and love. I’ve just been tired of making the same things over and over again. So, I checked out Jimmy Dean’s Website for recipes and found the Maple Sausage Corn Bread Pudding Recipe. My husband was a little bit leery because the recipe called for onions, so I told him to trust me it would be delicious. It came out wonderful, of course with my own modifications.

Sausage Corn Bread Pudding

Here is my version of Maple Sausage Corn Bread Pudding Recipe

Ingredients:

1 pkg of Jiffy Corn Bread Mix (or 8.5 ounces of your choice corn bread mix)
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 pkg Jimmy Dean Maple Flavor Pork Sausage Roll (8 ounces) cooked crumbled and drained
1 1/2 cups frozen corn cooked
4 eggs
2 cups half-and-half or whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Prepare muffin batter according to package directions, pour into lightly greased 8-inch square baking pan. Bake 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool completely.

2. Cut cornbread into 1-inch cubes; place in 13×19 inch baking pan. Bake 5-10 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer lightly greased 2-quart casserole.

3. Melt the butter and pour over the bread cubes, then top with corn and sausage

4. Beat eggs, half-and-half, salt in small bowl with wire whisk until well blended; pour over ingredients in casserole. Gently press bread cubes into egg mixture until completely covered. Cover with foil.

5. Bake 30 minutes then uncover and cook 10 more (make sure the knife comes out clean) Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

I varied the ingredients and directions to the original recipe quite a bit, to see the differences check out this Maple Sausage Corn Bread Pudding Recipe.

Hot Topics Jimmy Dean The Sun & Mom Start & Jimmy D’s Giveaway

September 14, 2010 by Momstart 370 Comments

At BlogHer 2010 I met with Jimmy Dean’s The Sun. The sun is a big golden light that all the planets revolve around and he has all kinds of information and knowledge about breakfast. The Sun commercials are quite humorous and when I tell people that I met the sun, they laugh! Not because it is a crazy thought that I met The Jimmy Dean Sun, but because internally they are remembering one of those commercials.

I had a lot of fun talking to the Sun, we chatted for about 30 minutes while the camera men were getting set up. I was most intrigued by the fact that he lived in Washington State for a period of time.

At BlogHer everyone had the opportunity to taste new Jimmy D’s breakfast foods. We were some of the first people to ever try them. They are lower in calories than you would expect any out of the box, into the microwave breakfasts could possible be.

griddlesticksThe New Jimmy D’s Griddle Sticks:

These have 7 grams of protein, 8 grams of sugar and only 6 grams of fat. They are sausage wrapped up in a pancake with only 160 calories.

The New Jimmy D’s French Toast Griddlers:

Toast GriddlerThese have 8 grams of protein, 6 grams of sugar and 8 grams of fat. They are french toast sandwiches with turkey sausage in the middle with only 210 calories. Remember that the sandwiches are bigger in size than the griddle sticks.

I tried both of these at blogher, and when I didn’t know how many calories were in them, all I did was have a bite. I was very worried about over eating while I was at the conference so I had a little bit here and a little bit there. I could have easily gotten away with eating the whole thing. After trying both samples, if I had to pick a favorite it would be the Griddle Sticks.

Jimmy Dean is our family favorite brand of sausage. I always buy Jimmy Dean maple sausage for our family. It’s my husband’s favorite and I enjoy it too. It’s always the same quality. Delicious. Yesterday my husband made Sausage Corn Chowder and I’m really looking forward to having the left overs tonight for dinner.
