Golden Globes: How to Look Like Julianne Hough

January 14, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

JulianneHough

Overview: Texture and volume were the key elements of Julianne Hough’s hair created by stylist Riawna Capri of Nine Zero One Salon.

PREP

1.) Julianne’s Hair was prepped with UNITE’s  Blonda Shampoo & Condition to brighten the tone of Julianne’s blonde hair for the special event and followed with a ton of UNITE 7SECONDS Condition. UNITE 7Seconds was used to not only detangle and condition the hair, but the extreme amount helped to make the hair super clean and slippery to ensure that some hair fell out to add to the final edginess of the look.

2.) For maximum root volume, UNITE EXPANDA Volume was applied 1-3 inches from the roots.

3.) Hair was then round brushed with a UNITE Pro-System 74mm Round brush.

4.) Once hair was dry, UNITE EXPANDA Dust was sprinkled throughout the root area on the top of the head

5.) Starting in the back, Riawna used small, horizontal sections on the top of the head, backcombing the hair 1-2 inches from scalp to create instant volume. She then continued forward to the hairline leaving out the final front section. The final backcombed “mohawk” was clipped out of the way.

SIDES

6.) The sides were slightly teased throughout for added texture and volume.

7.) A soft, natural parting in the hair was made on both sides near the temple area.

8.) Each side was split into a top and bottom section. Each section was twisted into the back towards the nape, made into a mini ponytail and pinned.

TOP

9.) Starting with the front 3 inches of the top section, Riawna twisted the hair over towards the left and pinned in place. The second section was then alternated to twist toward the right side and pinned in place. The alternating sections continued until the top section was complete creating a “twisted mohawk”.

10.) Once hair was set in the general form, she sprinkled UNITE EXPANDA Dust on areas that still need more texture, pulled the hair slightly with fingers and rubbed together to create whispy strands

11.) The look was finished with UNITE SESSION-Max Hairspray for extra strong hold to last all evening.

12) UNITE SHINA-Mist was applied for overall red-carpet shine

Quotes from Riawna Capri, Nine Zero One Salon:

“Sheek, Edgy and sophisicated”

“Julianne ’s dress was so beautiful and glamorous, we wanted to add a bit of edge with the hair and makeup to give a slight contrast that created the final overall look.”

Products: UNITE Blonda Shampoo ($26.25), BLONDA Condition ($28.75), 7SECONDS Condition ($26.25), EXPANDA Volume ($27.50), Pro-System 74mm Round Brush, EXPANDA Dust ($26.25), Session Max Hairspray ($29.95).

Golden Globes: How to have Kerry Washington’s Look

January 14, 2013 by Momstart 3 Comments

HAIR: John Frieda celebrity hairstylist Marcus Francis was inspired by Kerry Washington’s sequined, structured gown. Below please the steps he took to create her sleek and classic look, using products from John Frieda.

Golden Globes: How to Have Claire Dane’s Look

January 14, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Celebrity hairstylist Peter Butler created Claire Danes’ look for tonight’s Golden Globes in Los Angeles. Taking inspiration from the Homeland actress’ red-hot Versace gown, Butler gave Claire sexy, loose waves, likening her to a modern-day Jessica Rabbit.

Claire Danes Golden Globes

Step 1 – Prep

  • Blowdry hair with a large, round, boar bristle brush. Take a curling iron with a 1 1/2 inch barrel and start curling hair section by section. Set the curls with Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm-Hold Hairspray ($5.99 at drugstores).

clip_image002

Step 2 – Style

  • To create the perfect wave, use a paddle brush to brush through curls. Apply Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon Flawless Finishing Crème ($5.99 at drugstores) throughout the hair–it will soften hair and add shine while leaving the curls chunky and intact.

Step 3 – Perfect

  • Finish by adding a fine mist of Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray to lock in the style.

How to Make a Heart Braid

December 7, 2012 by Momstart 11 Comments

This holiday season it’s easy to keep your little angel looking cute, coifed and camera ready with simple yet stylish hair looks featured on The Today Show from Cozy Friedman, author of Cozy’s Complete Guide to Girls Hair. This one is my favorite and is great for Zoe.

The Heart Braid

Cozy’s signature style, this is a must-have look for the holidays.

clip_image001clip_image002

What You’ll Need: Wide-tooth comb, fine-tooth comb, decorative hair clip, ponytail holders

Step 1: Starting with damp hair (either towel-dried or misted), use a wide-tooth comb to detangle the hair.  Then, using a fine-tooth comb, part the hair down the middle of the head.  Clip one side up right above the ear.

Step 2: On the other side of the part, use the fine comb to gather a thin section of hair from the crown.  This section should measure about 2 inches from the hairline to the top of the head.

Step 3: Divide this section into three, and begin a French braid starting at the crown and curving toward the temple, then toward the back of the head, like the top lobe of a heart.  You will be lifting hair into the braid only from this side of the part.  Leave no loose hair in front of the ears.

Step 4: When you reach the center part at the back of the head, secure the braid with a ponytail holder.  If the hair is very long, end the braid about mid ear; the ends will hang down the back.

Step 5: Unclip the hair on the other side of the part and repeat the process.  Secure with a ponytail holder.

Step 6: Join the ends of the braids together in the back with a decorative bow or ponytail holder to form the bottom point of the heart.

Mommy Daughter Movie Star Hair Day at Swink Style Bar University Village Seattle

March 26, 2012 by Momstart 33 Comments

Spending the day with my daughter is always a very special time for us and finding things that she likes to do is still really easy. She’s such a girly girl, enjoying shopping, shoes dresses and primping. Last month I took her to get her nails done, this month we went and got our hair done at Swink Style Bar.

IMG_8663

I had a blow out and she had a dry style. We tried one of their new packages. They have two new packages at Swink Style Bar: The one we tried was the Mommy & Me Drystyle we could have done the Mommy & Me Updo, that’s the other option. The Mommy and Me styles are for moms and their daughters (under 7 years old) The drystyle package is $55 and the updo is $75.   We had a great time doing this together and I have to agree that it is perfect before family photos, Santa pictures, performances, and special events…we had dad take us out afterwards.

Older girls are of course welcome to come in with their mothers as well, but the services are regular priced ($70 for two dry styles and $100 for two updos). Swink Style Bar  also has options for Teens that want to come in with mom or without.

Our pampering experience took about 30 minutes and we came out looking like new women. I actually didn’t even recognize myself whenever I looked in the mirror and a few people looked at me funny until they realized who I was. I had a great time and see myself taking Zoe back there some time just for something special to do. IMG_8691

I felt like a movie star and think my daughter did to. She was all smiles the whole day and showing off her hair for the next three. She’s going to be sad tonight when I finally take those braids out, but I’ll promise to put them back in myself soon. The staff was very kind and easy to chat with. They love what they do and make you feel great about the way you look. IMG_8684

Swink Style Bark also offers blow outs. Lash extensions. Makeup. Bridal packages. Follow @swinkstylebar on twitter and Like Swink Style Bar on Facebook too for daily deals and events.

Our hair styles were provided to us free of charge by Swink Style Bar. My opinions are my own your experience may be different.
