Fun With Chat-Pak!

September 30, 2014 by Heather Heyer Leave a Comment

Chat Pak

Sample provided for review.

My daughter and her buddy 3 doors down from us have been having a blast with their Chat-Paks!! Made for Nintendo 3DS, Chat-Pak serves as a protective case and provides interactive communication while playing on your Nintendo 3DS. With a range of up to 4 miles (we got it to 3 miles in our hilly area) your neighborhood kids can stay connected.

For my daughter it is not so much about the ability to play games and chat but more so about the ability to chat, period. It kind of brings to mind those old TV shows where the kids talk to each other next door by sending a note back and forth across a line strung between the houses… Well, this is as close as it gets here in our neighborhood and they are loving it!

I have to say that I was a little concerned that the long range capabilities and that it is compatible with walkie-talkies – I was concerned for privacy. There are 836 channel code combinations and a voice scrambler feature, so I have a little less to worry about. It is easy to figure out and when used properly, it is really quite safe.

Another concern that I had was batteries! Oh those batteries! It requires 3 AAA batteries so I would recommend getting rechargeable batteries. I did find that because of the automatic off feature, the batteries lasted longer than I expected.

A great feature is that it acts as a drop case! I don’t know about your kids but my kids drop and bump and fling these things all over the place and every time I see that I just close my eyes, cover my ears and do the lalalalalaaaa waiting for the “Oh, Man! It’s broken!” to come flying out. Because they only get 1! No replacements due to loss or damage, so they have to take care of it.

This is a great little gadget to use that is fun and interactive. Do I recommend it? Yes, keeping safety in mind, I do.  They come in white and black and are available at Chat-Pak.com for $39.99 each.

Leap Motion Controller For Mac or PC

July 19, 2014 by Carrie McKenzie Leave a Comment

Leap Motion Controller is a small, compact 3″ device that senses how your hands move in order to point, wave, reach and grab on your computer.  You can flip through photos, play music by lifting a finger, and build or manipulate 3D objects.  The device was easy to install and I liked that there were several Leap Apps that readily available to start using right out of the box.  Apps fall into three categories Play, Create, and Learning.  The whole family got in on the fun and was pushing to get their turn to try a new app.  One cool insight that I learned in the set up process is that there are 29 bones, 29 joints, 123 ligaments, 48 nerves, and 30 arteries in just one hand.  Leap Motion Controller takes skeletal tracking into a new direction as well as making it just plain fun for whomever uses it.

It is important to note that the Leap Motion Controller doesn’t replace your keyboard, mouse, stylus, or trackpad, but it does work with them. The Leap Motion Controller is a cool, new device with lots of possibilities; however, it does have some growth to do in order to get the refinement needed to use for even more applications.  The good news is that the team at Leap Motion seem to be on a fast-track to adding new features and I always like companies that are close to developers and user communities.  Leap Motion is excelling at that. Check out their website www.leapmotion.com.  I highly recommend getting the Leap Motion Controller for the techie that wants to play with new technology as well as for kids that want to learn through interactive gestures.

Teachers around the world have purchased Leap Motion Controllers for their classrooms, and at $80, it’s also an affordable way to provide enrichment at home this school year.

Leap Motion comes with Airspace, an app store with access to educational apps for all ages across a variety of subjects. Here are a few examples:

Early Education

  • Curious Kids – Explore animal sounds, practice counting and even play the piano
  • TVOKids Caterpillar Count – Help your child learn to count with by guiding a caterpillar around the screen with their finger to collect numbers in sequential order
