Interview with The Falcon: Anthony Mackie Captain America The Winter Soldier #CaptainAmericaEvent

April 7, 2014 by Momstart 1 Comment

Interviewing movie stars is always a treat, but when you’re with a comedian it’s even better. Anthony Mackie has both the talent of being a serious actor but he also commands the room with laughter. He came into the room telling one of the dads that he was the ugliest mom he’s ever seen and then found a mom in the room and told her she had the best hair cut he’s ever seen. The way I tell it doesn’t express how funny it was, but I can tell you the way he said it was hilarious and that was just the beginning of all the fun!

imageAnthony Mackie has risen to the occasion when it comes to becoming a super hero in the Marvel Franchise. The Falcon History:

The Falcon, real name Samuel Wilson, is a fictional comic book superhero who appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Gene Colan, and introduced in Captain America #117 (Sept. 1969), the character is mainstream comics’ first African-American superhero. ….. The Falcon followed the company’s first African-American co-starring character, the non-superpowered World War II soldier Gabe Jones, and first regular supporting character, Joe Robertson of The Amazing Spider-Man. The Falcon debuted nearly three years before Luke Cage, Marvel’s first African-American series star, and almost six years before the African character Storm, the first black female, and also precedes Marvel’s British vampire hunter Blade, also created by Colan, by almost four years. The Falcon is also the first superhero of African descent not to have the word "black" as part of his superhero name, preceding the John Stewart Green Lantern by over two years.

Amazingly Anthony Mackie didn’t want anything to taint his performance so he just showed up on set not knowing anything about the Falcon. He wanted the Falcon to be his persona. What he found out about  being a super hero is that it’s hard work; and that any actor that flies on set is the hardest working actor in the industry. So check out this interview with Anthony Mackie for a few laughs and insight into his character in The Winter Soldier.

image

What was it like the first time you put the costume on?

Anthony Mackie: It was great. The first time I put that costume on, I couldn’t stop smiling. I was running around the room. It’s one of those moments where you just have to allow yourself to enjoy it.

My costume was 45 minutes to get in it. It was like five minutes to get out. But it was fun. I really took every moment to enjoy being a super hero. So yeah, it was, it was a good time.

image

Obvious question but how is it playing a superhero?

Anthony Mackie: When I first started acting I was like, there are two things I want to do. I want to be a superhero and I want to do a Western, preferably with Clint Eastwood. Then Morgan Freeman took my role in Unforgiven. [LAUGHS] Bastard!

When I got this call, I kind of put things in perspective. I feel like a lot of people are famous for different reasons. Some people are famous because they’re handsome. Some people are famous because they’re British. I’m very happy that I’m famous because I can act. And I feel like this is a job I got because I deserved it.

There must have been lots of guy talk on the set. What was it like to have Scarlett Johansson around?

Anthony Mackie: You know, Scarlett is just a regular chick. Like it’s weird, you expect her to be a diva or high maintenance or catty. Or just so — an actress. But she’s a regular chick and she’s really low maintenance and cool and fun to be around. She just goes with the flow. I guess that comes with being extremely talented. I feel like a lot of people compensate for not being talented with being bitchy. But she’s really talented. She’s a very really down to earth, fun, cool, just regular chick.

image

How do you feel about being the first African-American superhero?

Anthony Mackie: It’s funny you should ask that. [LAUGHS] It’s cool. When I was a kid, I really didn’t have a person I could look at, other than my dad, and be like, “Hey, I want to be that guy and fly through the window.” You couldn’t be like seven years old and say, “Who do you want to be for Halloween?” “Shaft!”

So [LAUGHS] you know, it’s really exciting. When I first got this role I just cried like a baby because I was like, “Wow, next Halloween, I’m gonna open the door and there’s gonna be a little kid dressed as the Falcon.” Ttat’s the thing that always gets me. I feel like everybody deserves that. I feel like there should be a Latino superhero. Scarlett does great representation for all the other girls, but there should be a Wonder Woman movie. I don’t care if they make 20 bucks, if there’s a movie you’re gonna lose money on, make it Wonder Woman. You know what I mean, ’cause little girls deserve that. There’s so many of these little people out here doing awful things for money in the world of being famous. And little girls see that. They should have the opposite spectrum of that to look up to.

You know, funny story. There’s this craft store called Michael’s. Look, my sister knits, and she goes to Michael’s. So my sister called me and she’s like, “Oh my god, I’m at Michael’s, picking up yarn. You have a poster at Michael’s.” I’m like, what? She’s like, “There’s a poster, there’s a Falcon poster at Michael’s. I’m like, “Holy s–t!” She’s like, “I’m gonna come and pick you up, and we’re gonna see your poster in this store.” So she picks me up and we go to Michael’s.

We go in, and I see the poster and I’m like, “Oh, this is….” She’s like, “I know, I know.” I said, “I’m gonna sign these posters.” I was like, “That would be amazing, you buy a poster and it’s like, actually signed by the Falcon.” Like, it would blow my mind. So I go to the front, I buy a Sharpie, I run back to the back of the store. And she’s like, “I’m gonna take a picture of you signing it.”

I’m in this store and I’m signing all the posters. The manager comes out, he’s like, “Hey, whatcha doing?” I was like, “Oh man, I’m signing these posters so when people buy ‘em, they’re signed.” He’s like, “Well, people are not gonna buy ‘em if they’re signed.”

And I was like, “No no no, it’s cool. I’m pretty sure there won’t be a problem.” And he goes, “Yeah, but it is gonna be a problem, you’re messin’ up my inventory.” And I’m like, “No, my man, trust me. I mean, I’m the Falcon, that’s me!” And he goes, “Yeah, right. You’re gonna buy those posters.” I said, “What?” He’s like, “You’re gonna buy all those posters or I’m gonna call the police.”

He rolls up all the posters and goes to the front of the store. And I had to buy like 60 Falcon posters that I signed in Michael’s. So that’s kinda how — I’m just enjoying it. Man, I mean, there’s so many bad things that happen to us as entertainers and actors, that I feel like, when something good happens, you should take full advantage of it.

Tell us which Michael’s it was!

Anthony Mackie: [LAUGHS] I’m doing a screening in New Orleans and the first invitation I sent out was to the manager of Michael’s. I’m like, my sister’s getting free yarn. And, and you’re giving me my money back. [LAUGHS]

image

You’ve worked with Hugh Jackman before, who’s played Wolverine in the movies. When you found out you got the role as The Falcon, did you call him up and ask for any pointers?

Anthony Mackie: No. I did not want to mess up my experience. I completely wanted to come into this naive, ignorant and like my virginal eyes not knowing anything. It’s funny because Sam [Jackson, Nick Fury] has done like 15 Marvel movies. And Chris [Evans, Captain America] and Scarlett [Johansson, Black Widow] have done like 6 each. And you know, Sebastian {Stan, Bucky/Winter Soldier] has done 3. So I was like, you know, don’t kill my vibe. Like I’m having a good time, we’re doing a Marvel movie, we get the best craft services.

We basically shut down the city of Cleveland. I was soakin’ it up. Chris and I have a very good relationship. And literally got to the point where we would show up on set and we were like seven-year-olds. I mean, we had that first day where it’s like, deal with 35-year-old men in costume. We’re losers. [LAUGHS] And then the next day, we started making fun of each other. Done it the next week, done the next month. And then it just turned into this thing, where it became infectious.

It’s fun when you go to work knowing you’re gonna make a quality product. Because as actors there’s so many people with daddy issues that mess up movies. It’s like, “Oh, I’m gonna edit it this way. Or, I didn’t have a girlfriend in high school so I’m gonna do this.” And it’s like, “Dude, just make a movie!”

I feel like working with Marvel is one of those studios where you go to work and you know everybody leaves their stuff at the door. And they just want to make a good project. So you know, once we got over our suits, we had a good time.

image

How was the whole Falcon costume experience?

Anthony Mackie: It was no fun. The hardest working actors in Hollywood are flying superheroes. I said it, I don’t care what Thor says with his hammer. I don’t care what Wolverine says. If you fly, it sucks.

I loved my costume, I loved everything about it. I love doing stunts. I have the best stuntman in the business. We’ve done like five movies together. And literally it’s like that Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny cartoon, where like the missile is coming and Bugs Bunny’s like paused and then puts Daffy in. And he just takes the brunt of every hit for me. And I love it. [LAUGHS] There’s nothing natural about flying to humans. There’s nothing we do that’s like flying. So my first day on set I walk in, I’m like, “What’s up, yo. Falcon in the building, what’s up?” Right.

And so I get up on like a 60 foot platform. And I’m like, all right, let’s do this. You know, brother in the building. And they said, “All right, stand on the edge of the platform, there’s a jet coming at you. We want you to stand up, turn around, shoot your guns and jump back backwards head first, into this mat.” From 60 feet in the air.

And I’m like, “Whoa!” The first day is usually like walking down a hallway, or eating or something. You know, just to break you in. Not jumping off the platform to your death.

So once we did that, in the scalding heat of the day, I kinda knew what I was in for. And it just got worse from there. It was really painful and exhausting. But Aaron Toney, my stuntman, literally, he fell out of a car at 40 miles an hour. He got messed up on this movie. So kudos to him. [LAUGHS]

image

What did you do to train and prepare for this film?

Anthony Mackie: Salmon, chickens, tuna fish, asparagus. And a cup of brown rice at noon. Every day. For three months. When I played high school football we used to do these things called two-a-days. Basically at six a.m. you wake up, get ready, go to the gym for an hour. And you do cardio, just like Jane Fonda shit. And then you come home, and you just rest and eat every three hours. Then at 7 p.m. you go to the gym, and literally lift whatever you can find. For about an hour and a half. And then you go home and go to sleep. And then you wake up and do it again.

I did that for three months. Fitness is a lifestyle, you have to eat a certain way. You have to do a certain thing, you have to live a certain way. So you know, me and my homeboy Jack Daniels stopped talking. You know, no more, pizza. Me and my girlfriend Haagen Dazs broke up. She’s French, it was crazy.

And then I show up and you know, Chris looks like a Greek god. And I’m feeling good about myself, I’m like Spandex ready, you know. And I show up and he’s like, Captain Tiny Ass. And I’m like, “Dude, how’d you get your ass that small?”

When I put my costume on, everybody was like, “Damn, we got to let out the air.” But I made it through it. [LAUGHS]

The Falcon goes back to the ‘60s. Which versions of the Falcon did you go back to for the character to draw on?

Anthony Mackie: I commend Marvel for putting the Falcon in this movie because the Falcon’s history is something very unique to the comic book world. Usually in comic books they’ll introduce a character, if it doesn’t hit they’ll just let him fall off into the sunset. But with the Falcon, Marvel made a unique choice to get him right. So he had about three or four different incarnations in the life of the comic book.

I tried to stay away from the source material because I felt what the writers gave me with this was the introduction to the Falcon. So I just took what I had in the script, and worked primarily on that. I felt like the military history he had, and the relationship he has with Steve in this movie, is much more important than who he was in the comic books. Because I felt like if that relationship was grounded in truth and it worked, the rest of the movie would work.

I really just focused on, what exactly are the side effects and repercussions of PTSD [Post-traumatic stress disorder]? How exactly do you overcome that? And when it’s overcome, is it like drugs, is it a work in progress everyday? Or is it like something, once you’re over it you’re over it and I’m good. Or is it person to person stuff like that?

I just asked a bunch of different questions along those lines. A lot of my research came from soldiers I’ve met during Hurt Locker and from doing charitable work with the Navy and stuff. So I just emailed a bunch of guys and got a lot of stuff online, a lot of videos. Lot of depositions with soldiers coming back and just talking about their experiences and where they are now. I just used that stuff and tried to ground him in the history that was him, as opposed to the history that was the comic book.

Inside Cars 2 Owen Wilson & Eddie Izzard Spies, Hot Cars and Pixar

June 26, 2011 by Momstart 2 Comments

During my stay in LA with Disney discovering Cars 2 I had the opportunity to interview Owen Wilson and Eddie Izzard along with 21 other bloggers. I’ve always thought of Owen Wilson as being a very famous actor, but never really thought about what it would be like to meet him, and Eddie Izzard, well I’d never heard of him before. I feel like since we don’t have cable anymore, it’s like living under a rock. The only news stream I get is either from my husband or from twitter.

Owen&EddieGroupShot

Having no expectations at all helped quite a bit. Many of the moms felt like Owen Wilson was showing signs that he had somewhere better to be. I thought he just looked tired and maybe he was a mommy blogger virgin you know. Of course he is a famous actor and should be used to all kinds of crazy out of this world media exploits right?

Eddie Izzard, the voice of Miles Axelrod, and Owen Wilson, the voice of Lightning McQueen, at the Cars 2 global press junket at Renaissance Hollywood Hotel on June 18, 2011 in Hollywood, Calif. (Photo by Deborah Coleman / Pixar)

116724875EC001_The_World_PrCars 2 came out Friday and Owen Wilson (Lightening McQueen) took a smaller role this time allowing Mater most of the spotlight. Some of the moms wondered if Owen felt slightly jealous of having a smaller role and that’s why he had the shy laid back attitude during the interview. I can’t imagine living the life of a star, it’s just too much smiling for me. Anyways, you’re probably wondering what Owen had to say to us right?

He talked about working as a Parking Valet and a huge perk was getting to drive really fancy cars. He spoke about boarding school and I’m really not sure what the point of that was, and we also chatted about the grossest thing he’s ever eaten. You know, in Cars 2, Mater eats a HUGE helping of Wasabi. The worst thing he’s ever eaten was a Vegemite. He said, “Yeah it was the foulest tasting stuff ….. I couldn’t even swallow.”

We then asked both Eddie Izzard and Owen Wilson What was your favorite scene in the movie. For Owen it was when Mater had the bomb on him.  “when we were doing the stuff there is this scene where you know I’m telling uh you know uh– you know Mater is trying– we’re saying, “You’re the bomb.” Uh you know that, that– I thought that was a really funny sequence to do. Uh no, no you’re the bomb.”

Have you ever wondered what it’s like for an actor to be a voice verses being in a live action film?

For Owen, “I’d say for me it’s actually easier because you don’t have the distractions of wardrobe hair and makeup. And you know everybody is kind of around. And it’s a harder leap ta’ kind of get into your imagination than for me where it’s just– you’re just kind of in your head at the microphone and you just ….it’s more like a little kid when you’re just kind of playing you know make believe. Uh, uh so for me it’s, it’s, it’s easier actually.” he likes being a voice actor. Eddie on the other hand prefers the live action. He said, “I think it’s more difficult.…. There is a certain thing about the way you are, the movement. The, the attitude, what– even what you’re wearing. How, how you’re looking. I just shaved my head for a part. You know that certainly changes your feel. But if you haven’t got that you’ve just have the voice. It is harder. You have to give what you can and then they go and animate.

111996144AP076_Walt_Disney_

Eddie was quite excited to be working on a spy film. “I mean the spies, everyone wants to be a spy,” so he was a little disappointed to find out that his character didn’t get any action. Owen found it pretty exciting and noted that it should appeal to kids saying, “Yeah I think that there’s something about you know spying you know that really appeals to kids. I know like growing up you know we always wanted you know binoculars or you know these– there was something that supposedly you could do with like Dixie riddle cups where you could heat or could create like you know anything that was like kind of secret or you know spying on people.”

111996144AP011_Walt_Disney_

I was most curious on knowing what it’s like to work at Pixar. Both of them had different stories on how much they liked Pixar’s offices and both commented on John Lasseter’s clothing choices. We all know he likes to wear custom made Hawaiian shirts.

Just in case you’re like me and have no idea who Eddie Izzard is, he plays Sir Miles Axlerod in Cars 2, is well known for being a comedian earning a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for outstanding achievement and has received a British comedy Award for tip stand-up comedian.

Oh and his favorite car choice is “Aston Martin DB5.” He said,  “If they made one like the Thunderbird…..A new Thunderbird that was based on the old 60’s model……But if they did the Aston Martin DB5 like the James Bond one”

Oh and did this post seem a little random, you should see the interview transcript. The whole conversation was RANDOM.

Photos and trip expenses were provided to me on behalf of Disney.

Inside Cars 2 Who’s Mater & Larry The Cable Guy

June 24, 2011 by Momstart 6 Comments

I had no idea what to expect when meeting Mater the undeniable star of Cars 2, Larry the Cable Guy met and exceeded all of my expectations. I was surprised to find that Larry the Cable Guy doesn’t change his voice at all, he is Mater. Listening to him, I could picture Mater driving around and getting into trouble. Also, Larry the Cable Guy is true to himself. He dresses like he wants to, he’s comfortable, and arrives on the Red Carpet in shorts and a button up shirt. So I decided the best way to discover who Mater really is, go to the source, Larry The Cable Guy.

111996144AP010_Walt_Disney_

When Larry the Cable Guy was asked, What do you think it is about Mater that is so endearing to children, that is so iconic? He said, “Aw, he’s just a good guy. He’s just a fun little animated character. He’s nice, he’s funny, you know. Uh, everybody wants to hang around with him. He’s a faithful friend. You know, plus he’s funny. He says funny things and he does fun things. Kids like that. Well, Adults like it too. So I think that’s pretty much what it is.”

We’ve all known from the very first movie that Mater has a lot of heart. He cares about his friends and we discover just how far he’ll go for his friends in Cars 2. Mater even puts his own life on the line to save Lightening McQueen. The bad guys put a bomb inside Mater, and once Mater realizes it he does everything he can to get away. But that’s not all he does to show his huge heart. He develops feelings for Holly too! Even Larry was quite impressed with how Cars 2 kept Mater true to his character from Cars 1, “they kept the relationship, the friendship factor in it. They kept everything in it. They just added a ton of action.” Mater is the star of Cars 2 and he managed to not let it get to his head. He is all the action behind Cars 2, he and Holly both were thrown into being spies.

Larry the Cable Guy, the voice of Mater, and Emily Mortimer, the voice of Holley Shiftwell, at the Cars 2 global press junket at Renaissance Hollywood Hotel on June 18, 2011 in Hollywood, Calif. (Photo by Deborah Coleman / Pixar)

What was Larry’s favorite scene in the movie Cars 2 you might ask?

“Uh, in the, I like the part were Mater, uh, eats the Wasabi [UNINTELLIGIBLE UNDER LAUGHTER] More of that Ice Cream! Boy, come on, it’s free, ain’t it? I get some. I do. Let’s go, it’s free. Move on there! Get her done. That’s, I like that part, you know.” He later said that was something he would do himself. Like I said, Larry the Cable Guy is Mater.

Dude you're going to be a dad book cover&

Dude, You’re Gonna Be A Dad! by John Pfeiffer is THE go-to guide for fathers-to-be.

Congratulations!  You’ve planted your seed and to Grandma’s delight, the bouncing bundle of baby joy will arrive next fall.  Think your work here is done?  It’s only just begun.
As she’ll likely remind you 1000 times a day, pregnancy isn’t just her job…in fact, there are approximately 3,712 ways for a guy to look 100% stupid during his partners pregnancy.  DUDE, You’re Gonna Be a Dad:  How to Get (Both of You) Through the Next 9 Months by John Pfeiffer helps daft soon-to-be dads avoid them all.  First tip:  Focus on what you can be doing for her rather than what’s happening to her. It will be best for you both.

It’s a long road from that stick turning blue to the drive to the delivery room.  And while her 152 baby books tell her exactly what she can expect, dad’s information outlets are considerably less.  Like any good coach, author John Pfieffer has seen it all (and lived to talk about it).  Form morning sickness to birthing lessons to countless rounds of nursery room paint color options, Pfeiffer teaches dads how to remain positive and responsive but assertive when the need arrives (no one wants a son named Percy, afterall).

John Pfeiffer is a married father of three.  With a stepdaughter, a naturally conceived daughter, and a baby by way of a threesome (with an IVF specialist), Pfeiffer is especially qualified to take expectant dads all the way through pregnancy’s home stretch.  He lives with his wife and kids in Atlanta, GA.
