Taking The Get Carded Challenge With Hallmark!

August 6, 2013 by Beeb 17 Comments

Hallmark: Get Carded!

Cards & postage for challenge provided by Hallmark.

I’m one of the few people I know who still really enjoys sending snail mail. I love sending “Real” cards for special occasions! So when Hallmark invited me to participate in their Get Carded Challenge, I thought this would be a great chance to catch up on some card-writing that I had already intended to do. The idea behind this challenge is to send 7 cards in 7 days to 7 people you care about. Challenge accepted!

Day 1 – Friday, July 26th: Jai brought in the mail, and one of the packages was my “Get Carded” collection. This was a surprise selection of Hallmark cards of all varieties and categories. When I looked through the collection of cards, I found one that was written for a long-distance relationship. It was very flowery and talked about the agony of being apart and wishing to be reunited to hold one another again. So I wrote, “It’s been an agonizing 5 minutes since I last saw you!” and walked upstairs to hand the card over to Jai. We got a good laugh out of that! 😉

Day 2 – Saturday, July 27th: One of my great-aunts recently fell and broke her back, so I wanted to send her a “Get well soon” card as well as thank her for a nice letter she sent me recently. I picked out a really pretty card from the pile which featured an embroidered fabric design. It was blank inside, so I was able to write a note wishing her a speedy recovery and say thank you for the lovely letter she sent me.

Day 3 – Monday, July 29th: We have a dear friend who hasn’t been well, so I sent her a pretty friendship card expressing how much I value her; inside, I wrote a personal “Get well soon” message.

Day 4 – Tuesday July 30th: One of my BFFs and I have been cracking jokes about what an insane summer this is for both of us – we’re both so swamped: Me, with my business, and her, with school. So there was one card in my package that immediately cracked me up: It said, “Do NOT freak out” on the outside, and “There’s no problem that you, me and a bottle of wine can’t solve” on the inside. I sent it to my friend because it was just too fitting, and on the inside I drew a coupon good for a girl’s night, since we’re going to get together for her birthday this month. The very next day she sent me an email and said: “Thanks for the card. I needed it!” and that she was looking forward to our night in.

Day 5 – Wednesday July 31st: Another good friend is having a birthday this month, so I sent her a flowery friendship birthday card. She lives several hours away, so cards are nice when you can’t see someone in person often!

Day 6 – Thursday, August 1st: One of the cards I received had a cute elephant on it and was meant to wish kids a fun time at summer camp. I actually scratched out the “Camp” part and gave it to our Grandma to to wish her a happy summer, because I knew she’d get a kick out of it. She enjoyed it and told Jai specifically, “Tell Beeb thank you” for the card!

Day 7 – Friday, August 2nd: One of my relative’s birthdays was coming up – yes, we know a lot of August babies! – so I had sent her a message earlier in the week to get her current address, since she’s in the Navy and moving around. I found out that she was actually going to be in town visiting, so rather than mail it Friday, I hung onto her card until I was able to hand it to her in person with a big hug! She loved the green envelope – when you open the card, it has a disguise mask and says, “This isn’t just a birthday card – it’s a high-five in disguise!” It came with a special “Magic” ink that reveals a different color when you stamp your handprint on it. I had a heck of a time getting the ink out of my hand after making the card, so she got a laugh when I told her my anecdote!

Day 8 – BONUS! Saturday, August 3rd: We were headed to a family reunion, and our great-aunt – the same one who I sent a “Get well” card to at the beginning of the challenge – was also having her 92nd birthday. I took along a cute birthday card with a decorative pennant on it that said “Celebrate”; she really liked the front of the card and appreciated the thought.

Are you up to the challenge? Bloggers who are interested in the Get Carded Challenge can click here to fill out a form to sign up. Blogs that meet the criteria will be provided with cards to take their own 7-day challenge. And all readers can use the coupon code BLOG30 to save 30% on cards from Hallmark.com!

Growing the Garden Together as a Family

July 25, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Growing the Garden Together

Guest Post

Now that it’s summer, I’m finally (mostly) done seeding and nurturing these tiny little plants, making sure none of my peppers or tomatoes gets hurt or hurts itself. I think this is my favorite part of gardening, just watching the plants as they constantly develop (much like my children), putting forth little peppers and hard round green tomatoes that gradually grow and ripen each day.

Although I do most of the work and heavy lifting for our modest backyard vegetable garden, it has been such a pleasure (yet sometimes a challenge!) to get my children involved in the process with me. No matter how old your kids are, or what phase of the garden you’re in, there are some really easy and simple methods I’ve tried to engage my kids in caring for and learning about where their food comes from. Plus, it’s helped me get them to actually eat their veggies!

clip_image001
(artsy picture from nzgabriel)

Make it Fun

Adding creativity to your garden is important. You can let your children name your new plants and create small signs for them by using popsicle sticks and permanent markers. One idea is to give all of one vegetable a name that starts with the same letter; for example, all the tomatoes could have T names. Your child will look forward to taking care of Timothy, Terry, and Tom the tomatoes. If you need more of your own specificity (if you’re like me and you have lots of different kinds of tomatoes), you can give each Timothy, Terry, and Tom a last name that will tell you what type of tomato it really is.
Add Some Flair

A bright and colorful garden will certainly be more likely to draw your child’s attention than a dull one. Paint the fence around your garden all sorts of colors and add some fun decorations, like a windmill or garden gnome. You can even buy an unpainted garden decoration from your local garden store and have your children decorate it. By adding colors and interactive elements, your kids can go out and play with the windmill or larger-than-life stone frog even if the plants haven’t done anything particularly exciting recently.
Dress the Part

Go shopping with your kids and let them pick out their own garden boots, rakes, shovels, and gloves, or get creative and make your own with your child’s personality in mind. When it becomes time to work in the garden, your little one will be excited to get outfitted in their own gardening gear. (Even dogs get dressed up for yard work!)

Give Them a Project

If your child is old enough and ready for the responsibility, giving them their own project to focus on, like taking care of all the pepper plants, is a great way to get them invested in their new veggie garden. Let them know that it’s their responsibility to water and take care of these peppers so that they grow big and hearty. Give them tips along the way, of course, and be there in case they need your help, but let them do all the work themselves so they can really see the impact they’re having on growing these plants. My youngest isn’t quite old enough for this, but my 8-year-old boy’s potted tomatoes are doing very well!

But Be Safe

As with any activity, it’s important that you supervise your children while gardening at all times. Make sure that they aren’t getting ahead of themselves by carrying shovels that are too big, trying to lift something that’s too heavy, or making a swamp of your yard with the hose. Also be aware of what you’re putting into your garden that might get onto your children’s hands or even into the food you grow! Garden pests can be tricky to get rid of, and it’s convenient to turn to store-bought pest control methods. Regardless of whether you use a commercial slug-killer or choose instead to use saucers of beer embedded in the ground (a surprising and surprisingly effective solution!), make sure you are aware of what your children might be handling.
Share Your Spoils

When it’s (finally) time to eat, make sure your kids taste a little bit of everything – they’ll probably be excited to taste what they’ve grown, and they might change their mind about liking some veggies! Have them help you prepare a salad or a stir-fry using the bountiful harvest. Also, the next time you go shopping for seeds to grow, make sure you involve the little ones. This will ensure that you’re planting veggies they like while having them involved and hooked from the get-go.

Gardening is a healthy and active project that your children will enjoy right along with you. It might make for a bit more work, but it’ll also be a LOT more fun. So what are you waiting for? Go out there and get your hands dirty!

Skype: Connecting The Family with Face Time #WindowsChampions

July 2, 2013 by Momstart 3 Comments

clip_image002Skype: Skype is the always-on app that makes staying in touch with all your contacts easier than ever. If you can’t be with your Dad on Father’s Day, mom on Mother’s Day, family on Thanksgiving or Christmas, Skype is the next best thing. No matter if you’re on a PC, Windows Phone, Mac, tablet, iPhone or Android device, Skype keeps you connected and always available. (Free)

I’m in Texas because my grandmother is in the hospital. I travel all the time and while I’m dealing with mixed emotions I really really miss my kids. I don’t usually have all this extra time on my hands when I’m away from home but I have had a lot of time. So I decided that I’m going to make skype work on my phone. All I had to do was install it and sign in with my Windows Live account which is the same way you sign into Windows 8 on your computer. My husband called me and the first time I answered on my laptop. It worked great.

IMG_5749

Then when I was at the hospital visiting my grandmother I called him on my phone and we skyped phone to phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 and He has a Windows Phone 8x. Then I made sure that my moms phone works so she could call the kids when I go home. My mom has an iPhone 4 and hers worked really well. We chatted over skype. Then my husband called me with his Microsoft Surface and I answered with my phone. It was so great, I actually tucked the kids in over the phone. They were going to bed. I miss them so much but seeing their smiling faces helped so so much. It really lifted my spirits. I needed to see my kids and their faces. Zoe was able to tell me how they went shopping and I could really see the excitement on her face and how much fun she was having with dad. Miles talked to me once for about 2 minutes and then I could hear him yelling I love you mom. But he was too busy to talk to me the second time. Oh how I really need a hug. We did give each other hugs and lots of kisses. IMG_5750

So from device to device and network to network Skype keeps connection the family.

Planning Family Finances During a Divorce

March 22, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Planning Family Finances During a Divorce

Guest Post:

Divorce is never an easy situation to deal with. Along with the flow of emotions associated with divorcing your partner, financial hardship can follow directly behind.

In fact, divorce often makes it even more difficult for couples to keep their finances afloat. While it may seem like a difficult time to divorce, especially with the economy in the shape that it is in, one should never stay in an unhappy and loveless marriage. It is for that reason that there are many tips for women and men who would like to keep their finances together even throughout a divorce.

Consult with an Attorney

Always consult with a divorce attorney. The divorce attorney will be able to provide you with divorce law resources and support you with the process of filing a divorce from your partner. It is the responsibility of your attorney to help you with any future mediation that you may be expected to participate in with your former partner. Always search around for divorcer attorneys that have experience and will be able to represent you in the right manner.

Mediate on Finances

One of the best ways to ensure a successful divorce is for both individuals to be cooperative and willingly mediate with one another. With your lawyers present, the two of you will be able to mediate about your finances, living situations, and the children.

Be willing to negotiate and compromise because this is the best way to save money and avoid a headache. If the two of you are not willing to talk or mediate, you will end up spending much more money for your attorney’s time, along with going through a lengthier process that will cost you more in the long run.

Determine Who Claims Children for Taxes

You will need to come to an agreement with your former partner on who will be able to claim children for tax purposes. If you are currently employed, even if it bothers you, you should be willing to give this right to your ex. If you are not employed, you are unable to use the tax deduction and then it ends up being wasted. Instead, you could easily come up with a written agreement with your ex.

Being flexible about these types of situations will be in your best interest, especially when it comes down to your own finances. The more difficult you are with the process, the more problems that will arise and the more money you will end up spending.

Consider Assets

There are a number of things that would fall under the category of assets, which includes the home in which you live and the car that you drive. You may want to consider these assets and create a plan that is fair for the both of you. You cannot necessarily expect to win everything in a divorce, unless you have been wronged.

If you are willing to split assets evenly, you will both be left with something.

Going through a divorce is much of a challenge and it will take patience from both parties. However, one of the best ways to keep your family finances afloat during a divorce is to simply be cooperative with your ex. If you are uncooperative, more money will be wasted and the outcome will likely not be as good.

Their Characteristics Unify Us as a Family

May 24, 2012 by Momstart 53 Comments

While watching the movie The Odd Life of Timothy Green (which I loved by the way), I started thinking about all the different characteristics and qualities we have as a family and what’s displayed in my children and how much I love them. You know, when you become a parent you look at your child and think you have the most precious gift in the world; because well you do. As they grow older that love for them deepens and you carry those feeling to their school, your place of work and everywhere you go. You say, or at least in my case, “my children are so smart. They are smarter than the average child.” “My son is hilarious, adorable, handsome……” “My daughter lights up a room with her smile” To me, no child comes close to my child. Everyone thinks their child is special or uniquely better than every other child, I’m not saying my child is better than yours except that I am (because we all do it)

When I think about my own children and their unique qualities, I was actually surprised at how different each one of them are and how uniquely they display different characteristics of my husband and I the good ones and the bad ones

My son

BW Miles close up

no attention to detail like me
loves to eat like me
social, outgoing, and loud. You can’t *not* notice him… we’re not sure where this came from
smart like his dad
musical like me
naturally funny like his dad
stubborn I want to say like his dad but perhaps both of us
negotiator like me

My daughter

IMG_9338

quiet and shy like me and her dad
notices everything like her dad
smart like me
not an athlete like her dad
honest to a fault like her dad
beautiful like me
smile to die for like me
beautiful singing voice like me
goofy as all get out like me

And with all of these characteristics they bring complete joy and magic to my life. My daughter’s most magical moment for me was that she was born with her amazing smile, I adore her smile. They say children don’t smile until they are a few months old, she was smiling from the first second. My son’s magical moment happens every time someone walks up to me and says, my child loves Miles. He wins people over and his amazing ability give me great joy. For our family the absolute most special magic and joy they brought into my life was how they influence my husband to be the father I always knew he could be.

IMG_9657

Of course they drive me crazy and I make mistakes yelling at them. I’m not perfect, they’re not perfect, parenting is not perfect, but we’re a family and love each other and support each other and learn from each other no matter what.

I saw the movie The Life of Timothy Green at an early screening thanks to Disney

Cherry Almond Hormel Ham Bundles Recipe #HormelFamily

May 20, 2012 by Momstart 16 Comments

Well it’s Sunday and I needed another recipe to share with you guys. I’m trying to do one photo a day and one recipe a day and it’s a lot to keep up with so I’ve recruited the help of another company that I work with regularly to help me out this week. As you may know, I’m a Hormel Family Ambassador and they send me monthly information to share with you guys. This month everything revolves around the Kentucky Derby which is something I really don’t know anything about. But I do understand good recipes.

Cherry Almond Ham Bundles

Hormel® Cure 81® hams the perfect southern centerpiece for your Derby get-together. Varieties like the flavored ham steaks, and cubed/diced packages make for fast and easy delicious dishes like this one here.

 Cherry Almond Ham Bundles Recipe

Main Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 cups finely chopped pitted fresh dark sweet cherries
  • 1/4 cup amaretto
  • 2 tablespoons dried cherries or cranberries, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1 Hormel® Cure 81® Sliced Ham
  • 1 (17.25-ounce) package frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Directions

  1. 1 Heat oven to 375°F.

  2. 2 In small skillet, sauté almonds in butter until toasted; remove almonds with slotted spoon. Add fresh cherries, amaretto and dried cherries; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer until liquid is evaporated. Remove from heat; cool.

  3. 3 Stir almonds and sour cream into cooled cherry mixture.

  4. 4 Slice ham into 8 (1/4-inch-thick) slices. Cut each slice in half again. Divide cherry mixture evenly among slices ham. Top with remaining 8 slices ham.

  5. 5 On lightly floured surface, unfold pastry sheet. Roll into 14×14-inch square. Cut into 4 (7-inch) squares; repeat with remaining pastry sheet.

  6. 6 Place 1 ham stack on 1 pastry square. Bring all 4 corners of pastry together; twist to form bag. Seal edges. Repeat with remaining ham and pastry.

  7. 7 In bowl, beat together egg and milk; brush over pastry. Place filled pastries on baking sheet. Bake 55 minutes. (If pastry begins to brown too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil.) Cool 10 minutes before serving.
