Kids #EatFresh at Subway – Study Shows A Healthy On the Go Option ($40 Subway Giveaway)

I received a gift card for this post. All opinions are my own.
I am a Subway fan, and I have been for awhile. You want to know the funny thing? During both of my pregnancies, it’s been one of my biggest cravings! I know you’re supposed to stay away from deli meat, so I always get chicken or make sure they super toast my sandwich. It makes me feel good to know that I can order something freshly made, not fried, and healthy. I know everyone’s definition of “healthy” is different, but for me it means up front ingredients, something without grease, and something that has the option for some green veggies. I try really hard to make great choices for myself, and try even harder to make great choices for my kids. That’s why the results of a recent study on kids’ meals leaves me feeling pretty good about choosing Subway.
The Center for Science in Public Interest recently released the results of a study Kids’ Meals: Obesity and Poor Nutrition on the Menu. This study looked at the options on the kids’ menu at 50 of the nation’s top chain restaurants. The government recommends that children (ages 4 to 10) get between 1200 and 2200 calories a day. Unfortunately, most chain kids’ meals are high in saturated fat and many were over 1000 calories.
The National Restaurant Association actually has a voluntary Kids LiveWell menu standard. According to an article in USA Today, the LiveWell menu standard says, “healthy kids’ meals have 600 calories or less, get 35% or less of their calories from total fat and total sugar, have no more than 770 mg. sodium, and also meet other nutrition criteria. The standards emphasize lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole-grain and low-fat dairy products.” ALL of Subway’s Fresh Fit kid’s meals (each include 4” sub, apple slices, and low-fat milk or bottled water) met this standard! I have to admit that usually I let my son grab the fruit juice instead of the milk which does add some calories, but he usually drinks water, so I think the special juice treat is okay. He also prefers his sub a little deconstructed, but what kid doesn’t?
Subway is one of my regular go to’s when I have to grab food on the run. Help us celebrate the good news about the Subway Fresh Fit kids’ meals by entering this giveaway for your own $40 Subway gift card.
