War Horse on Blu-ray/DVD Digital Download and On-Demand April 3rd

March 24, 2012 by Momstart 21 Comments

War Horse, which received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Art Direction, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, comes out on Blu-ray and DVD April 3rd. Disney is releasing WAR HORSE on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download and On-Demand on Tuesday, April 3, 2012.  From Legendary Academy Award®-winning motion picture director/producer Steven Spielberg, this critically acclaimed and Academy Award®-nominated epic adventure tells the story of the extraordinary journey of courage and friendship as seen through the eyes of one unforgettable horse named clip_image001Joey, and his miraculous journey to find his way back home.

I saw this movie back in December and really enjoyed it. I loved how it captured the heart of the horse and the terrible aspects of war without really showing the gore of the war. Joey was fantastic, of course I hear there were about 15 Joeys. They were all fabulous. Then of course all the actors were fantastic too. It wasn’t until recently that I realized that the actor (Tom Hiddleston) that plays Loki in The Avengers was also in War Hose. Someone told me that about 10 times and I never got it until I made the connection myself. Because he looks completely different. Tom played Captain Nicholls. The soldier that took Joey to war.

I interviewed Emily Watson and just loved her. Emily felt the movie was filmed beautifully and as an anti-war film you really get the idea that that particular war was pointless. 4 years of carnage and so much loss of life and a terrible miss treatment of animals. Steven Spielberg captured all of that beautifully without making you watch all of the carnage. She played Rosie Narracott the mother of Albert.

Now Albert plays a very central role in the movie War Horse. He becomes the owner of Joey at a very early age and believes this horse is capable of great things. He does everything he can to prove it too, even enlists in the war to prove it.

War Horse Synopsis:

The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse—an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. “War Horse” is one of the great stories of friendship and war— a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is currently on Broadway. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

Dora The Explorer: Let’s Explore! Dora’s greatest adventures

January 28, 2010 by Momstart 2 Comments

Dora The Explorer: Let's Explore! Dora's Greatest AdventuresWith Over 3 hours of entertainment this is the DVD to get for your Dora Loving kids.  Dora The Explorer: Let’s Explore! Dora’s Greatest Adventures will be released on February 2, 2010 full of Dora. There are 8 different episodes and each is filled with a different lesson. In one episode Dora and Boots must create a map of their own to save their friend the map.

Dora has been teaching my son a few words. He can say, Dora, Boots, Backpack, purple backpack, map. When it’s time to use the map, he says map, louder and louder. The Map, The Map. I would probably still not like Dora if it wasn’t for her educational value, and the fact that my kids want to watch her all the time. I just can’t hate her.

My daughter has decided to call this one Yellow Dora, I think it’s because the packaging has quite a bit of yellow on it. I was sure that she would be calling it Purple Dora, because the third Episode is Journey to the Purple Planet. Dora teaches Spanish, colors, shapes and counting. Zoe can count all the way up to 14 and can say her entire alphabet. I’m not saying Dora is responsible, I did a little work.

So here is the episode line up:

Dora The Explorer: Let’s Explore! Dora’s Greatest Adventures

Lost Map: When a goofy bird mistakes Map for a stick and puts him in a nest, Dora and Boots need help to draw their own map and rescue their good friend.

I liked that in this episode Dora and Boots made the map.

Hide and Go Seek: To win Senor Tucan’s trophy, Dora will need your help finding her friends in the Spooky Cave, the Squirrel Trees, and the Rainforest!

I liked Senor Tucan most in this episode.

Journey to the Purple Planet: Blast into space with Dora and Boots to bring five lost space creatures back home to the Purple Planet!

I liked the little aliens, and their cute little names even though I can’t think of them right now.

Rescue, Rescue, Rescue: Baby Jaguar is stuck in a tree! Isa is stuck in a hole! And Benny is stuck atop a geyser! Will you help Dora and Boots race to everyone’s rescue?

I liked watching them decide who to save first, how does a person make a choice like that?

Star Catcher: Abuela gives Dora a Star Pocket making her a Star Catcher! But when Swiper swipes it, Dora needs help from you and the Explorer Stars!

I liked my kids learning about shapes in this one.

Star Mountain: Oh, No! Swiper swiped Dora’s necklace and threw it to the top of Star Mountain! To get it back, Dora needs your help, and the help of some Explorer Stars too!

I liked that there were also shapes in this one too.

Boots To The Rescue: Dora wrote a song for music classs, but she left it in Boot’s room! Will  you help him on his big solo adventure to school?

I liked the song about speaking Spanish in this one. It’s very catchy.

Swiper the Explorer: To help a lost baby fox get back to his Fox Hole, Dora and Boots get help from an unlikely hero….Swiper.

I liked that Swiper wanted to be helpful.

Yes this DVD was sent to me by Nickelodeon for purposes of this review. The link above is an affiliate link, I think I’m required to tell you that.

Clive Owen Brings me to tears in The Boys are Back

January 20, 2010 by Momstart 3 Comments

Clive Owen Stars in a Deeply Moving Tale of a Man Who Finds Himself
Suddenly Responsible For Raising Two Sons Alone
From Miramax Films
THE BOYS ARE BACK
Available on DVD January 26, 2010

“One of the year’s best pictures” — Baz Bamigboye, Daily Mail

*

The Boys Are Back brought tears, I was brought tons of tears with this movie. Clive Owen is a halfway father to one child and a dead beat dad to the other. Then his wife dies and he is solely responsible for one of his children. He doesn’t know how to be a father and grandma wants to take care of the kid. He refuses to let his mother-in-law raise his child so he takes off on an adventure to find himself. He finally has to go back to work and is trying to get a handle on things. He’s in the middle of failing miserably and his ex-wife decides to send his other son to him to live. He wants to say no, but also wants to get to know his other son. So now he’s a father of two, a teenager and an Elementary kid, all on his own. The worst part of all of it is that his job requires him to travel.

I was shocked when he left his teenager to take care of his younger son. They hardly knew each other and disaster strikes and the grandparents have to step in. Yikes! This was the breaking point for him. He realized he was going to have to become the parent and stop being the friend that always says yes. He has to prove to both of his sons that he can be the father they need him to be and he finally is. This movie is based on a true story of a father restoring his relationship with his sons.

DVD Bonus Features
• The Boys Are Back: A Photographic Journey — A picture is worth a 1,000 words as
director Scott Hicks takes us on a pictorial tour of the making of the film.
• A Father and Two Sons, On Set — Simon Carr, whose memoir inspired the movie, and
his real-life sons visit the set.
The death of his wife leaves wisecracking sportswriter Joe Warr (Clive Owen) with a curious six
year-old (Nicholas McAnulty) and a rebellious teen from a previous marriage (George MacKay) to
bring up in a household devoid of feminine influence. So Joe takes on parenting the only way he
knows how—full throttle. With an exuberance born of necessity, he teaches his boys to meet the
joy and fragility of life head on. The Boys Are Back chronicles the fierce love and loyalty the three
Warr men discover for each other as they make their way through the trials of everyday life.
The Boys Are Back is priced at $29.99 on DVD.

Cartoon Network: The Secret Saturdays and The Marvelous Misadventures of FlapJack

November 4, 2009 by Momstart 224 Comments

D3 Publiser introduced my family to the cartoon the Secret Saturdays. I can’t tell you how much we actually like it. It’s embarrassing , or at least in my case. I can’t speak for my husband daughter and son. The cast is awesome and graphics are great because they aren’t over the top like most cartoons today. It’s just a plain cartoon with a plot line from Supernatural.

Cartoon Network sent me a review copy of The Secret Saturdays Volume 2 and a copy of The Marvelous Misadventures of FlapJack Volume 1.

Who are the Secret Saturdays?

The Secret Saturdays are Mom Drew, Dad Doc, and Zack the kids with the power over the cryptids. They are not your normal family because they don’t sit down together for dinner, they bond over action packed adventures. They find out if they are tough enough to stop VV Argost and his evil plan to get the Kur Stone. Mattel will be creating the toys and D3 published the video game.

The series follows the adventures of the Saturdays, a family of cryptozoologists that work to keep the truth about cryptids from getting out, in order to protect both the human race and the creatures themselves. The Saturdays travel the world searching for cryptids to study and battling twisted villains like the megalomaniac V.V. Argost. The series is influenced by the style of 60s-era Hanna-Barbara action series (such as Jonny Quest), and is combined with Jay Stephens’ own personal interest in cryptozoology. The series also airs on Teletoon in Canada.

Who is Flapjack?

Flapjack logo 02.png

Flapjack is a young boy raised in a talking whale named Bubbie. Flapjack leads a peaceful life until the duo rescue a pirate by the name of Captain K’nuckles, who tells Flapjack of Candied Island. Inspired by the adventurous pirate, Flapjack, File:Flapjack K'nuckles.jpgCaptain K’nuckles, and Bubbie get into strange predicaments and "misadventures" in search of Candied Island and the coveted title of "Adventurer." The three spend most of their time in Stormalong Harbor, where they earn money, eat candy, and get into misadventures.

11th Hour Complete Series Release

October 27, 2009 by Momstart 1 Comment

11TH_HOUR I thought I was getting this DVD to review from Warner Brothers but I never received it and I can’t complain because they send me so many cool DVD’s to review anyways. So I can’t write a review but I can tell you it looks like my kind of drama and I’m happy to write about the release that took place last week. The Complete series is a six DVD set. I love science and how far it can be pushed dramatically on TV. Scares me a bit because I get sucked into believe all of the possibilities.

"The Eleventh Hour"
Acclaimed film and television producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean, CSI) is back again in the nick of time with…ELEVENTH HOUR. Starring Rufus Seewell as Dr. Jacob Hood, a brilliant biophysicist and special science advisor to the government. The series follows the enigmatic doctor as he investigates scientific crises and oddities, everything from cloning to cryogenics. With absolute jurisdiction and a resolute pursuit of those who would abuse and misuse scientific discoveries and breakthroughs for their own gain, he’s called in at the eleventh hour as the last line of defense. Marley Shelton co-stars as Special Agent Rachel Young, the decorated FBI protection officer assigned to watch his back. Based on the British miniseries by acclaimed writer Stephen Gallagher, the series follows this unlikely pair as they crusade to protect the substance of science from those with nefarious motives.

Here’s more about ELEVENTH HOUR:

“Storylines are paced and told well. Talent is top-notch. Sewell brings a nice touch of eccentricity and wry humor.”

October 22, 2009 by Momstart 5 Comments

hp I am a huge Harry Potter Fan. I loved the books and I would probably re-read them if I had digital copies instead of big bulky hard back books. So instead I just watch my DVD’s over and over again and go see them in the movie theater if I get the chance. I have not had the chance to see the newest one Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince yet and what fun it would be to see it live with Daniel Radcliffe.

Experience the first-ever worldwide Live Community Screening (LCS) exclusive to owners of the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Blu-ray Disc and hear star Daniel Radcliffe and director David Yates answer your questions during this live LCS on December 12th, 2009.  Also be the first to see footage from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, featured on the Blu-ray and 2-Disc Special Editions of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, available on December 8th, 2009.

The worldwide LCS, which showcases the expansive capabilities and interactivity offered with Blu-ray and Warner Bros. BD-Live, will take place on December 12th at 12:00PM PST  (3:00PM EST) live from London.  The LCS will allow BD-Live capable Blu-ray users to simultaneously watch the movie together with Daniel Radcliffe and director David Yates and hear an interactive Q&A where fans can ask questions about the blockbuster film directly to Daniel and David, directly from their home.

“I’m really looking forward to the Live Community Screening of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and excited to talk directly to fans of the movie about my experiences and answer their questions,” said Daniel Radcliffe.  “It’s a wonderful way for fans and for those directly involved with making a film to share opinions and ideas.”

According to director David Yates, “It’s a tremendous honor to be invited to host the first worldwide Live Community Screening and to have the opportunity to talk directly to fans across the globe.  I’m looking forward to engaging with the thoughts and opinions of the fans who have supported us so loyally and passionately over the years – without them the films wouldn’t be the success they are.”

Warner Bros. BD-Live is an interactive feature exclusive to the Blu-ray format that allows

users to experience a variety of exclusive interactive features.  In addition to access to the multi-territory LCS, other exciting BD-Live content available to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Blu-ray owners include:
