A Blanket, a TV and Thee: Time To Catch Up on Favorite Television Shows

November 30, 2012 by Momstart 5 Comments

A Blanket, a TV and Thee

Guest Post

The holiday season is one of the best seasons for catching up on and discovering new television shows. The weather is cold, it is often wet and the idea of going outside feels loathsome. Don’t fight the urge to stay inside, embrace it! Cuddle up under some warm blankets with someone special and get lost in some great television instead. You can stream shows like The Office computer if they are not on at a specific time. Then, when you’ve worked through those, try some of these other fan favorites.

image

Doctor Who

Doctor Who is the longest running show in television history and for good reason. The show features a man (“The Doctor”) who travels through time and space. Wherever he goes hijinks ensue. Start with the “new” seasons that began airing in the mid 2000s with Christopher Ecclestone. It’ll take about five minutes before you want a sonic screwdriver and a Tardis of your own.

Battlestar Galactica

Once you start watching this show you aren’t going to want to stop, so make sure you’re settled in for the long haul. Battlestar Galactica centers on the crew of a fleet of spaceships that, after their home world was destroyed, sets out to find Earth in the hopes of setting up a new home. The problem? The enemy (Cylons) who did the destroying are machines that are designed to look just like everybody else. Add that to some internal political drama and intrigue and you’ve got a crazy compelling show.

Sports Night

Do you ever wonder what Aaron Sorkin was doing before The West Wing? Watch this show to find out! The show stars Peter Krause (of Six Feet Under and Parenthood) and Felicity Huffman and tells the story of the staff and behind the scenes of a Sports-Centeresque television show.

How I Met Your Mother

This half hour sitcom style comedy centers on Ted Mosby and his search to find the perfect woman. The catch that makes this worth watching is that the entire show takes place through flashbacks of Ted as he tells his teenage children the story of how he met their mother. The show also stars the delightful Neil Patrick Harris who, we’re pretty sure, can do no wrong.

Kitchen Nightmares

Long before Gordon Ramsay’s show was on Fox, it was on the BBC. This show chronicles Gordon Ramsay as he works with rand tries to save restaurants all over Europe and North America. This is a reality show that doesn’t make you feel nearly as guilty as certain shows that may or may not be based in New Jersey. The early episodes also have an oddly soothing feeling to them, perfect for curling up with a hot cup of tea and relaxing on a cold winter’s day. Just…make sure you aren’t eating when he starts to explore the kitchen refrigerators, because some of them are gross enough to make you lose your lunch.

Making the decision to curl up in front of the television is easy. Deciding what to watch is often hard. Hopefully these suggestions will help narrow the field for you!

For The Love Of Doctor Who: Doctor Who Timeline Infographic

December 28, 2011 by Momstart 22 Comments

I saw this on Facebook, my SIL liked it and posted it on her page and I just LOVED it. I’m such a geek for Doctor Who! We even started watching Doctor Who from the very from the very beginning on Amazon Prime with 15 minute episodes that take an entire season to get through one story line. The 1963 Doctor played by William Hartnell was the very first Doctor. We loved how the music is pretty much the same, it’s just been updated a little bit.

Then watching old fashion Doctor Who led to our Star Trek original series addiction. We took a break in Star Trek to watch part two of Season Six part 2 of Doctor Who for BBC. So in all my geekiness, I present the Timeline of Doctor Who!

Doctor Who Complete Series 6 Blu-ray

November 26, 2011 by Momstart 385 Comments

So, I have to admit that I was freaking out this entire season/series. Is this the end of Doctor Who? What’s going to happen next what is the question? I was freaking out so bad that before my husband and I could finish watching the DVD that BBC sent us to review, I checked on the BBC website to see when the next series begins. There is hope that Series 7 will begin airing for an Easter special which means, this is not the end of the Doctor. Of course the time traveler found a way to cheat death!

Watching the complete Doctor Who series six made me remember just how much I love watching Doctor who. I LOVE Doctor Who. Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series is excellent

Matt Smith and Karen Gillen make their triumphant return as the Doctor and his companion in an all-new series of Doctor Who coming to DVD and Blu-ray in 2011. This release combines the two halves of series six with the 2010 Christmas Special plus hours of bonus material to make a spectacular collectible that no fan will want to miss! The new series includes the first ever episodes shot in the US and promises new thrills, new monsters, and new adventures which will leave fans pinned to the edge of their seats.

Includes:

A Christmas Carol
The Impossible Astronaut
The Day of the Moon
The Curse of the Black Spot
The Doctor’s Wife (not who you think)
The Rebel Flesh
The Almost People
A Good Man Goes to War
Let’s Kill Hitler
Night Terrors
The Girl Who Waited
The God Complex
Closing Time
The Wedding of River Song

Matt Smith has completely proved himself to be a fantastic Doctor Who. I can’t wait until we go back and watch series 5. I haven’t seen it at all. In fact, I’d like to go back an start in series four or whenever it was when we first met River Song. I love this story line.

Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series

November 26, 2011 by Momstart 2 Comments

DR WHO COMPLETE S6 BD and SD

I’ve been waiting for Doctor Who The Complete Sixth Series to come out after being teased with only the first half of the series. I had to know what happened to River and wow, the series is getting interesting. In the first half of the Series Dr. Who was killed, but we didn’t know who did it they were wearing a space suit. Now as I was watching that episode we found out that there was a little girl a space suit back in 1969, I think was the year. That girl was River, but I never once thought it was the same spacesuit, but now it makes sense why the doctor would send them there. Are you confused yet?

Doctor Who has a way of confusing you into enjoying what you’re watching. On November 22nd, Whovians can join The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) as they make their triumphant return in a season filled with fresh thrills, new monsters and pulse-pounding adventures. Plentiful extras include a 60-minute Christmas Special; Doctor Who Confidential, an inside look at each episode; audio commentary; trailers and more.

Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series is excellent. I think when I reviewed the first half of Doctor Who The Complete Sixth Series I said that I miss David Tennant, well, I’m over it. Matt Smith is a really good Doctor Who. I’m really interested to see how it ends and if they are planning on ending the series all together or if the Doctor finds a way to save his own life even if it creates the biggest time paradox ever. Did River really kill The Doctor? Does she even know who she killed. I need Spoilers people!

10 Reasons Why I Love Doctor Who Series 6 Part 1 and Waiting for Part 2

July 29, 2011 by Momstart 10 Comments

It was just a few weeks ago, I was in my hotel room on one of my blogging trips watching TV and got to see an episode of Doctor Who Series 5, but at the time I didn’t realize what series I was watching and I didn’t care. I was just so excited to be watching Doctor Who on TV. Since we don’t have cable we watch everything as it comes out on DVD and we haven’t purchased Dr. Who Series 5 yet, not having seen Matt Smith play the role yet; I’m still personally in turmoil over David Tennant leaving the role.

But now, I’ve seen Matt Smith in action as Doctor Who and figured out who River is, but there is a huge gap for me as to how Amy and Rory met and what they did the season before. So I HAVE to go back and watch Doctor Who: Series 5. Here is why I LOVED Doctor Who Series 6 Part 1.USBD WHO S06_01 3D cmyk

1. Doctor Who: Series 6, Part 1 is a two-disc DVD and Blu-ray set containing the first seven episodes along with two Monster files, “The Gangers” and “The Silence,” two of the Doctor’s most challenging opponents.

2. River Song is such an awesome character.

DW S11.2 EPISODE 1

3. In the season opener, “The Impossible Astronaut,” four envelopes are received, numbered 2, 3 and 4, each containing a date, time and map reference, unsigned, but in TARDIS blue. Who sent them? And who received the missing number one? This strange summons reunites the Doctor (Smith), Amy (Gillan), Rory (Darvill) and River Song (Kingston) in the middle of the Utah desert and unveils a terrible secret the Doctor’s friends must never reveal to him. ‘Space 1969’ is their only clue, as their quest lands them – quite literally – in the Oval Office, where they are enlisted by President Nixon himself to assist enigmatic former-FBI agent Canton (Mark Sheppard) in saving a terrified little girl from a mysterious spaceman.DW S11.2 EPISODE 2

4. I knew right away who that little girl was.

5. Following the two-parter, the Doctor, Amy and Rory journey on the high seas of 1696 aboard Avery’s (Bonneville) pirate ship to solve the mystery of the Siren (Cole).

EPISODE 3

6. In a bubble universe at the very edge of reality, the Doctor meets an old friend with a new face, and in a monastery on a remote island in the near future, an industrial accident takes on a terrible human shape.

7. The two-parter episodes always leave me hanging and wanting more Doctor Who ASAP.

8. Everyone that ever owed the Doctor a favor returns to repay the debt.

9. The battle of Demon’s Run, and the Doctor’s darkest hour. Can even the truth about River Song save the Time Lord’s soul? Only two things are certain. Silence will fall. And a good man is going to die…

10. I was on the edge of my seat and still am. I have unanswered questions from the first episode. Was that the real Doctor who died?

We received a copy of Doctor Who Series 6 Part 1 From BBC America.

Another Last minute Gift Idea BBC TV Favorites Holiday #Giveaway

December 21, 2009 by Momstart 915 Comments

I’ve been watching BBC show since I was in high school. One guy that I really liked loved The Black Adder and I watched tons of it just to spend time with him. I kept hoping that I would become more than just one of the guys, but alas, all I gained was an appreciation for British comedy. Everything works out in the end.

Over the years I grew a much fonder appreciation for their Science Fiction, as we watched Doctor Who. I fell in love with the ninth doctor, Christopher Eccleston, and was quite upset when he regenerated into David Tennant. But over time I was won over and never wanted him to leave. So yes, I’m upset again as he’s about to change over into a new doctor. I had to negotiate with BBC America Shop to get the next chapter for myself. So that’s what I get for hosting this giveaway. I haven’t received it yet so I can’t write a review but I don’t want to ruin it for anyone either.

But this post is not just about Doctor Who and all of the spinoffs that I also watch. It’s more about BBC America Shop and what you can purchase there. BBC America Shop sells products for the house, jewelry, apparel, books and DVD’s. Here are a few DVD ideas:
