Sofia The First: Once Upon a Princess DVD Release

February 22, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Disney Junior’s animated television movie “Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess,” which was crowned the #1 preschool cable TV telecast of all time when it aired on November 18, 2012, arrives on DVD March 5, 2013. Zoe has watched it five times since we’ve opened it and every time we have friends over she has to show it to them too. It’s an adorable little movie about a regular little girl becoming a princess and it led to the TV series Sofia The First.

clip_image001Now for the first time on DVD, young viewers can join Sofia the First as she experiences first-hand what it really means to be part of the enchanting world of a princess. When Sofia’s mom marries the king, she’s whisked off to the castle, where she learns what it means to be a true princess. In addition to learning how to fit in with her new family including her step-father, King Roland II, and step-siblings, Amber and James, Sofia quickly discovers that looking like a princess isn’t all that difficult, but possessing the characteristics of a true princess – honesty, loyalty, courage, independence, compassion and grace – is what makes one truly royal. While living in a captivating world of castles, wizards and flying horses, Sofia is a relatable peer-to-peer princess who is experiencing many of the same social situations as young viewers at home – learning how to fit in, making new friends and conquering new skills. Helping her in her journey are the three headmistresses of Royal Prep Academy – Fauna, Flora and Merryweather (the beloved fairies seen in Disney’s classic "Sleeping Beauty"); the royal steward, Baileywick; and a group of cute woodland creatures including a rabbit named Clover; as well as Cinderella, a classic Disney Princess, who makes a special visit to offer Sofia words of wisdom.

Opening Imaginations with Doc McStuffins Friendship is the Best Medicine

August 17, 2012 by Momstart 11 Comments

It wasn’t until just recently that I figured out what Doc McStuffins, it’s a really fun relatable show for kids on Disney Junior. My kids just love it, and they’d already seen it before I “introduced” them to it. So Zoe was really excited to watch it and see so many different episodes. Doc McStuffins Friendship is the Best Medicine has five full length episodes and 2 11 minute stories highlighting the doc’s favorite toys.

Doc McStuffins Friendship is the Best Medicine clip_image001EPISODE LIST:

ENGINE NINE, FEELIN’ FINE! – Doc and her toys learn a lesson about dehydration after discovering that Donny’s toy fire engine has run out of water.

· THE RIGHT STUFF – Stuffy rips his tail and tries to hide it from Doc and the other toys and learns that anyone can get hurt – even brave dragons.

· CAUGHT BLUE-HANDED – When a mysterious rash of blue spots breaks out among some of the toys in the clinic, Doc traces the "Mystery Pox" back to Donny’s toy monster, Glo-Bo who had been finger-painting earlier in the day and forgot to wash his hands.  Glo-Bo is voiced by Jim Belushi.

· TO SQUEAK, OR NOT TO SQUEAK – Doc helps a plastic toy duck get his voice back after his squeaker pops out.

· BEN/ANNA SPLIT! – When Doc’s huggy monkey doll Ben loses the velcro patch that attaches him to his sister Anna, Doc glues it back on and tells him that he will have to stay in the clinic overnight while it dries.

· THAT’S JUST CLAW-FUL – Doc prescribes physical therapy for her crab bath toy Hermie after she reattaches one of his claws that has fallen off.

· THE RIP HEARD ROUND THE WORLD – While dancing with Lambie, Doc accidentally rips a hole in her fur.

· WALKIE-TALKIE TIME – Doc diagnoses a toy walkie-talkie with "Staticosis" and helps find his missing antenna so he can communicate clearly again.

· DARK KNIGHT – During a sleepover with all of her toys, Doc discovers that Sir Kirby is afraid of the dark and prescribes a night light to cure him of the "Dark Willies."

· HALLIE GETS AN EARFUL – When Hallie is having trouble hearing, Doc gives her a hearing test and realizes that she has extra cotton stuck in her ears.

"Doc McStuffins" is an imaginative animated series about Doc McStuffins, a six-year-old girl who communicates with and heals stuffed animals and broken toys out of her backyard playhouse clinic.  It’s a show that to me shows children it’s ok to talk to your toys. My son talks to his toys, sings to his toys, gives his toys baths. Watching Doc McStuffins with him made me think of how he plays. Zoe keeps the talking in her head but I can see that she has fun with her toys too, plus Zoe gets much more into the role playing. Actually, I’ve noticed as Miles gets older he’s starting to get into the role playing too. Role playing is healthy, so give them a white jacket and stethoscope and encourage them to play doctor with their toys.

More about Doc McStuffins:

Assisting Doc with the day-to-day operations at the clinic are her much-loved friends: Stuffy, an overly proud dragon; Lambie, her  cuddly best friend; Hallie, a jolly and caring  hippo nurse; Squeakers, an alarmist squeaky toy fish; and Chilly, a snowman who spends a lot of time getting check-ups at the clinic.  Whether it’s a case of loose stitching, low batteries or a blow-up toy who’s sprung a leak, Doc and her pals are always there to lend a helping hand, while imparting to young viewers the importance of taking care of oneself and others.  Each episode features two 11-minute stories and an original song and showcases the hallmarks of great Disney storytelling – fantasy and wish fulfillment.

Disney Junior Mickey Mouse ClubHouse Space Adventure Review

November 18, 2011 by Momstart 112 Comments

The star of one of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s newly released movies needs no introduction. He is an icon, the symbol of everything Disney, and the most beloved cartoon character of all time: Mickey Mouse! He has fans throughout the world and of all ages; even my youngest daughter before turning one, wanted her first birthday to be all about Mickey. So if you’ve never heard of Mickey Mouse, then you must be living on Mars!

MMCH_Space_Adventure_DVD_ArtAnd Mars is just where Mickey and his friends are off to in Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s newly released movie Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Space Adventure. This 45 minute, full-length intergalactic adventure takes the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse gang – Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Daisy – into outer space to search for the ultimate space treasure. Geared for kids 2 to 5 years of age, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Space Adventure invites young viewers to discover outer space and use their problem- solving skills while they watch. In this specific adventure, Mickey and pals head to space where they tour the Moon, Mars and the Rings of Saturn as well as meet new alien friends while on the hunt for a unique space treasure.

My daughters couldn’t wait to get the chance to watch this video when it arrived. My youngest daughter, now two and a half, watches Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Disney Channel daily. This movie did not disappoint her one bit. It stays true to the television show’s objective which is intended to help children use specific age-appropriate problem solving skills, such as identifying shapes, counting, and memory in an entertaining way.

My older daughter, the kindergartner, is a huge Disney fan and has enjoyed just about every Disney movie she has seen. Well, maybe not the ones with scary parts, but that wasn’t an issue with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Space Adventure. Space Pirate Pete is the only character up to no good, but before you know it even he becomes friends with the rest of the gang.

Both my daughters loved the special “treats” included with this DVD: a surprise, never-before-seen “Goofy’s Thinking Cap” episode and fun, glow-in-the-dark space-themed stickers! It’s an out-of-this-world package the kids won’t want to miss!

Released November 8, 2011 as a 2-Disc (DVD + Digital Copy) Combo Pack. Available online and at your favorite retail store. Suggested retail price $19.99 U.S./$24.99 Canada.

Disney Junior’s Special Agent OSO Whirly Bird Vehicle By Learning Curve Giveaway

May 28, 2011 by Momstart 278 Comments

Special Agent OSO logoWe were just talking about Special Agent Oso the other day, I think Zoe saw an advertisement on one of our computers and said she wanted to watch it. She’s liked it for a while even though we don’t have cable, so she doesn’t get to watch it very often. A few weeks back, Summer wrote that really great Special Agent Oso Rapide Command Center Review? She did a great job describing the show. I think she’s sat through more episodes with her kids than I have with mine. I didn’t even know that oso is the Spanish word for bear.  So, just in case you’re like me and not entirely sure about the premise of the show, it’s on the Disney Channel, it’s a preschool series, it’s starring a really cute teddy bear named Oso. Oso is a clumsy, lovable special agent-in-training under an international organization of stuffed animals, such as his co-agent Wolfie, serving the international agency called U.N.I.Q.U.E. (United Network for Investigating Quite Usual Events) which helps kids accomplish everyday tasks. I think the theme song is catchy and the episodes are educational.

We received the Special Agent OSO Whirly Bird by Learning Curve. The Whirly Bird to the rescue is geard for ages 3+ for active imaginations! Kids get to join Special Agent Oso as he soars off to his next extraordinary assignment. One of Miles’ favorite things to do now is to pretend to fly. He loves taking toys and soaring them across the living room as he walks across the room. What’s really cool is that the Special Agent OSO Whirly Bird is equipped with an ejector seat, grappling hook, and spinning propeller, all providing more aspects of FUN! As you can see, the Whirly Bird has all the gear Oso needs to arrive at his destination! Another one of Miles’ favorite aspects of any toy is the ability for it to make sound. He has always loved making as much noise as possible. The magnetic activation point triggers electronic sounds and character voices from the show! The Special Agent Oso Whirly Bird Vehicle is available at Toys R Us for $24.99 and on Amazon the Special Agent OSO – Whirly Bird retails for 19.54.

You can learn more about Learning Curve and the outstanding name brand toys and other products they offer on their website and like Learning Curve on Facebook and follow them on Twitter @LCToys.
