By Dayna:

Curious George is a big deal at our house.  Since we don’t let our kids watch a lot of TV, we’re picky about what they do watch, and Curious George is one of the few that makes the cut.  We’ve seen every episode at least twice and have the theme song memorized.  So when my daughter saw a new George movie advertised, it was cause for excitement!

Curious George Swings into Spring is a one-hour special, to be aired on PBS on Earth Day, April 22.  Without spoiling it for you, the story revolves around our favorite mischievous monkey experiencing spring fever and enjoying the great outdoors.  It didn’t disappoint my kids, so I’m sure it will satisfy your little critics, too!

What I like best about Curious George is that my kids always learn something without realizing they’re learning.  After watching the movie, my three-year-old suddenly decided to shake of the winter hibernation and started asking constantly to go play outside, a win for any mom!  We made a bird feeder out of a recycled plastic bottle, chopstick, and twine, and had fun watching our little feathered friends flock to it.  Then, we got some tomato seeds to plant and are looking forward to seeing them grow.  All around, Curious George provided a fun family day, watching the movie and then getting outside and enjoying what we learned! Thanks, PBS!

About Dayna:

Dayna is a children’s counselor turned stay-at-home mom after the birth of her first child three years ago.  She is married and has two beautiful daughters.  When kids permit, she and her husband love to travel, enjoy good food, and spend time with friends. And she is an amazing friend.

Stride Rite Curious George PBS Kids Party $50 Giveaway

December 3, 2012 by Momstart 259 Comments

Today we got to have a fun play date where we previewed some brand new Curious George shows! My eldest, 5, has always loved Curious George so it was a happy opportunity for her. She has inducted her younger sister into the show too. It is great for me to have something they can both watch and enjoy (30 minutes of “quiet” time to cook anyone?)

clip_image001[4]clip_image006

I have been a fan of Curious George ever since my eldest was 1 and I was ok with her watching some TV. I’ve had the DVR set up to record shows (on rotation) for over 2 years now! There are 2 episodes in a half hour slot and each episode ends with young children solving real math/science problems. In each episode George solves problems by subtly using math and science with objects that he finds around him – another thing I like about the show: it teaches children to care for the environment by recycling and using regular things around the house in a different ways. And of course, it introduces kids to nature!clip_image002clip_image005

The children got to run around the house and be curious themselves. There were a few discoveries of their own to be made! They colored in some butterflies, notice some symmetry going on! They got to measure different things around the house with some rulers. They discovered that the butterfly’s body is different lengths at different points. They got to measure their own heights with a cute growth chart! Who was the tallest?clip_image003

Season 7 premiers THIS MONDAY, December 3rd, on your local PBS channel. Curious George takes a visit to Australia! If you’ve watched Curious George before it’s definitely up to the same standard as previous seasons! clip_image001[6]clip_image007

I hope you enjoy the new shows as much as we did! And get out and get discovering!

Stride Rite is a proud sponsor of Curious George on PBS KIDS!

The Learning Company Curious George & Reader Rabbit Learning Books

November 21, 2011 by Momstart 2 Comments

Miles and Zoe are both in Preschool this year. Miles started out not very interested in learning letters or numbers. I would work with him and it just wasn’t his thing. I couldn’t even get him to sing the alphabet. Just a week in preschool and he sings the alphabet and LOVES to trace. He’s actually getting really good at it too. So one thing I like to let them do is practice.

imageCurious George is a familiar character thanks to my blog and PBS. The kids are excited to try things out when they see a familiar character. In the Learning with Curious George Kindergarten Reading book, the kids had fun working the puzzles, reviewing letters, and getting ready to read. Together with my help we went over basic words and started learning how to sound out the words. I tried to keep this book just for Zoe to use because she is a little big ahead of Miles, but he loves that this book is Curious George and wants to do all the tracing that’s in the book. The Curious George workbook series draws on curriculum designed by teachers and aligned to National and State Standards. Children will be led through colorful, kid-friendly activities by their familiar friend Curious George.

Reader Rabbit has been a great book for the kids too. The full color pages make practicing their letters and math skills more interesting than the black and white printer copies I had been making them before. The Reader Rabbit books are designed for children ages 3-7.  The Reader Rabbit brand sets out to capture the imagination of kids while seamlessly blending learning activities with captivating entertainment. Reader Rabbit has been delighting children, parents, and teacher in countries all around the world for over 25 years.

What’s really amazing is that at The Learning Company you can download a free Curious George Workbook.

At The Learning Company each workbook features full color worksheets that draw on Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s deep expertise in classroom curriculum, stickers and certificates to help keep kids motivated.

Pajama Party: Featuring Curious George 2: Follow that Monkey DVD #giveaway

February 24, 2010 by Momstart 590 Comments

curiousgeorge Universal Studios sent my family a copy of Curious George 2: Follow that Monkey to preview before it comes out next week. Can you believe that next week is March? Both of my children were excited to watch Curious George, it was my son that took the DVD from me first and that’s usually his sister’s job.

We watched it as our evening family movie, as I’ve cut almost all of our daytime tv. As I sat down to watch it I didn’t expect to enjoy it; I was pleasantly surprised. I found it to be silly and was laughing along with my children. That silly mischievous monkey. No wait, Ted would say, “He’s curious, very curious!”.

George finds out that there is a circus in town and he really wants to go because there is an elephant in it. Kayla is a cute blue baby elephant and she really is blue. She’s homesick for her family. George understand her pain and wants to see her smile, so he takes off on a coast-to-coast journey with Ted barely able to keep up. Follow that monkey features an all-star voice talent including Tim Curry (“The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius,” Home Alone 2: Lost in New York), Jamie Kennedy (Kickin’ It Old School, Malibu’s Most Wanted), Matt Lauer (“Today Show”), Frank Welker (“Curious George” TV series, “Futurama,”) and comedy legend Jerry Lewis, plus music from legendary songwriter Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.

The music is child like and soft and captivated my daughter from beginning to end. It’s a great movie to enjoy as a family and sure to leave a smile on everyone’s face.

Curious George 2 Follow that monkey soundtrack and #giveaway

February 11, 2010 by Momstart 113 Comments

The soundtrack to the new movie, “CURIOUS GEORGE 2: FOLLOW THAT MONKEY” was sent to me to review. I want to be completely honest and say that I have not had the time to give it the attention that it deserves. But I will say,

With all things Curious George, we loved it. Curious George reminds me of my son, he’s always getting into something but can get out of trouble just by smiling and saying I’m sorry, well my son has the added effect of batting his eyes at you. The cuteness just melts your heart.

The world’s most beloved and inquisitive monkey is back in “CURIOUS GEORGE 2: FOLLOW THAT MONKEY,” the sequel to the 2006 animated hit movie.  The soundtrack to “CURIOUS GEORGE 2: FOLLOW THAT MONKEY” features the Rivieras hit “California Sun” performed by Brian Wilson as well as all new songs by Carbon Leaf, a special title track recorded by 429 Records’ artist Jackie Greene and an original score by Heitor Pereira.

Movie Description:

Curious George and The Man with the Yellow Hat set out on a madcap cross-country adventure to reunite Kayla, a homesick elephant, with her family.  This adventure features this unlikely trio  as they face all types of trouble (the funny trouble that Curious George is infamous for). The colorful characters in the end learn that with family, friends and determination you can achieve anything. Featuring the voices of Tim Curry, Matt Lauer, Jamie Kennedy and Jerry Lewis, CURIOUS GEORGE 2: FOLLOW THAT MONKEY, “proves that family, friends—and curiosity—are number one.” (Francine Brokaw, Los Angeles Family Magazine) The Soundtrack follows the story closely.

Curious George A Very Monkey Christmas Live, and DVD and Book and Soundtrack #giveaway

November 15, 2009 by Momstart 401 Comments

CGXmas_DVD_2D

Do you kids just love Curious George? Mine do.

We love Curious George. We have watched him on PBS and he is still as cute as I remember. Curious George is always getting into trouble but it is so fun to watch him. He has such a redeeming smile and sounds that he makes. I really liked the episode where we went to work in the chocolate factory. I loved it.

We also spent time examine his exhibit at the Children’s Museum in Seattle. The Children’s museum is excellent at bringing story book characters to life for children to enjoy.
