Bird Seed Craft Tutorial Inspired by "The Pigeon Needs a Bath"

April 12, 2014 by Beeb 26 Comments

Bird Seed Craft

MomStart is working with "The Pigeon" book series to bring you these fun ideas! Compensation and samples provided.

The Pigeon really needs a bath! Except, the Pigeon’s not so sure about that. Besides, he took a bath last month! Maybe. It’s going to take some serious convincing to try and get the Pigeon to take the plunge. First in the series, Don’t Let Pigeon Drive the Bus recently celebrated it’s 10th birthday!

image

Over the last decade, The Pigeon books have sold millions of copies and enchanted young readers. The books have received numerous starred reviews, have appeared on many "best of" lists, and have even been inducted into the Indies Choice Picture Book Hall of Fame.

As you saw earlier this week, MomStart hosted a super fun "Pigeon Party" in honor of The Pigeon Needs a Bath by Mo Willems.

To help inspire your own Pigeon Party, we wanted to share this fun and easy party favor craft that the whole family can make together.

Pigeon eggs!

These "Pigeon Eggs" hold a bird seed surprise inside, so that the recipient of the party favor can enjoy getting outside and feeding some real, live pigeons after chuckling over that hilarious pigeon scarfing down a hot dog! My parents always had several bird feeders outside our home when I was a child, so I grew up with a love of feeding the birds. I thought this craft would be a fun way to continue that tradition!

What You’ll Need to Get Started:

Bird seed favor supplies

Supplies:

  • Small bag of bird food – 1lb or less
  • Post-It Label Pads in blue & yellow
  • Sandwich bags
  • Bag of 12 plastic Easter eggs
  • Scissors
  • Black felt-tip pen

IMPORTANT NOTE: As always, if you are doing this craft or bird feeding activity with children, parental supervision is required.

Step 1: Fill The Sandwich Bags With Bird Seed

To get started, pay a visit to your local pet shop and pick up some bird seed for your little pigeon friends; ours has a "Dove Mix" that you can pick up for $1.79 per pound.

"Dove Mix"

You’re going to measure this out in 1 tablespoon increments into 12 sandwich baggies.

Bird seed bags

Tuck the bag shut, and fold it in half so that it fits into the plastic egg shell.

Step 2: Create Your Pigeon

Now comes the fun part where you can let your inner Picasso Pigeon free! Take your yellow Post-It Label Pad and pull off one sheet. Cut off a small portion of the corner to form a crude triangle.

Cutting the Post-It Label

Creating a beak

Unlike regular Post-It Notes, Post-It Labels have an entirely sticky back, so this will stick easily to the egg to form your pigeon’s beak.

Creating the Pigeon Egg

Next, take your blue Post-It Label and draw your pigeon head. This is essentially 3 circles: One large circle for the head, one medium circle in the center to form the white of the eye, and one small black circle to create the pupil. This is so easy to draw that even my un-crafty bird brain could do it! 😀

Drawing the pigeon

Using the outer line as your guide, cut out the head.

Cutting out the pigeon head

Line up the head over the beak and affix it to the egg.

Affixing the pigeon head

Finished egg

Voilà!

Bird Seed Party Favors Inspired by "The Pigeon Needs a Bath"

These favors are perfect for a Pigeon-inspired party – hand them out to your guests, then go outside and take turns feeding the birdies!

Finished party favors

You might say…this is one party favor that’s for the birds!

Now tell me: What party supplies would YOU create for a Pigeon Party?

Stay Away Summer Time Boredom: Arterro Creative Kits

June 23, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Samples received

My kids love arts and crafts, and the old stand-bys of play dough and crayons only last so long before they’ve worn out their welcome, so I was excited to discover Arterro.  Their creative kid kits are more usable artwork than fridge art, and that scores brownie points with me!  I love an art project with a purpose, so I eagerly awaited the arrival of my chosen kits.

The Bubble Wands Kit was a lot of fun, both to make and for my kids to play with!  Of course, they needed a lot of help from me to make the wands, but they’re also well below the recommended age of 8.  With supervision, though, it gave us a fun activity for the afternoon, and bubble wands that will last much longer than the plastic ones.  The kit even included a recipe for homemade bubble that rivaled the store brands!

The Art Journal Kit is genius, for kids of any age.  It’s basically a self-contained refrigerator display of your child’s art.  The journal is filled with quality paper that kids will love to draw on (so they can finally stop coloring in all of your notebooks!), as well as extra pages of colored and patterned paper for special projects.  There are even pockets inside to save stickers or loose-leaf pages.

Arterro will keep your kids so busy with projects to fuel their creativity that they’ll be headed back to school before they have time to get bored!  So stock up and stay sane!

Let’s Make Something Fun – Kiwi Crate – Crafts for Kids

By Alyson:

I love to do crafts with my three daughters.  The good news is they love it almost as much as I do so we try, especially in the Summer when school is out, to do fun and interesting craft projects on a regular basis.  Sometimes I really have to plan ahead or scrounge around to pull all of the supplies together, both of which take time and effort.

A while back, I heard about a new company called Kiwi Crate that sent everything you needed for kids to make crafts.

Founded in 2011, Kiwi Crate sparks creativity in kids and saves time for busy parents by providing all of the inspiration and materials necessary for hours of imaginative play. With monthly deliveries of activities designed to help kids discover, explore, and create things in the world around them, Kiwi Crate brings hands-on fun right to your door.

We finally got a chance to try out their services, with one of their Limited Edition crates designed with Earth Day in mind.  Our crate arrived safely, containing everything we needed, even down to a pair of good quality kids scissors.

There were several possible crafts along with everything we needed to complete them.  In addition, there were things to color as well as additional ideas of cute and clever earth-friendly crafts we could do on our own another time.  While the crates are intended for one child, ages 3 to 7, we divided it up between my three girls and they all had a ball.
One project entailed rolling out clay, topping it with a small branch with leaves then stamping that onto a brown bag.  Another included project was to make colored paper by shredding bits of colored tissue paper along with white shreddies and water then shaking them all together into a wet pulp.  After that you poured the pulp into the included strainer and pressed out the water.  Once it dried, you had a sheet of paper!  My six year old thought that was the coolest thing ever!

All in all, I was super impressed with how detail oriented the company was.  I mean, they thought of everything!  Now I know exactly what to get my six year old for a gift…MORE KIWI CRATES! 😉

Ordering from them is easy.  You can find them online at http://www.kiwicrate.com/.  They have a colorful and easy to navigate website where you can order individual crates, month-to month, or gift subscriptions.  The crates range in cost from $19.95 for a single crate, $19.95 per month on the month-to-month option or $220 for 12 months.  The subscriptions provide 13 crates.  There is no charge for shipping for any of the crates.

With Summer coming up I am sure these will come in handy then there are birthdays, Holiday gifts…the sky’s the limit!  Between us all we can create a craft-filled beautiful world!
