Still Time to Help Children Have a Hunger-Free Summer #HungerFreeSummer

July 19, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

I see the school supplies are already out in all the stores and it means that for some of us summer is almost over. Some kids will be heading back to school in mid to early August and the rest of them will be going anytime between then and September second which is when my go back. However, that’s still four to six weeks of children that are out of school and without meals. I know it seems crazy that in America we have this problem but we do. Children that have free or reduced lunches at school aren’t getting lunch during the summer.

I’m working with ConAgra and the Motherhood to help share information with you so you can help end Childhood Hunger and support a Hunger-Free summer. ConAgra Foods has made fighting child hunger part of its culture. Half of the ConAgra Foods Foundation’s $10 million commitment to Feeding America is dedicated to summer hunger support. The program – now in its fourth year – has supported the delivery of more than 2.5 million meals and snacks to children struggling with hunger over the summer. This summer, 29 food banks in 20 states will use Hunger-Free Summer grants – ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 – to overcome barriers.

Chris O’Donnell has five children and he feels this responsibility as anyone with children does. Children should not go hungry. If you remember from my post earlier this summer, I shared with you the video he created and that just by watching this video you’re helping a child receive a meal. So watch the video below and share it with friends. You could have a video viewing party. As part of the viewing party, educate attendees about the importance of child hunger awareness, particularly during the summer months. You should also show it to your children. It’s important to raise awareness to them so they know how important it is to help others and so they know how fortunate they are. Join in the fight against child hunger by spreading the word, volunteering, and advocating for the cause.

Let’s Talk About a Hunger Free Summer with @chrisodonnell @ConAgraFoods @ChildHungerEnds @FeedingAmerica #HungerFreeSummer May 23 4p ET

May 22, 2013 by Momstart 2 Comments

Last year I had the amazing opportunity to work with @FeedingAmerica @Conagrafoods and @Childhungerends to raise awareness about the Hunger free summer program. It was amazing to see how Con Agra is giving to communities all over the US to keep kids fed during the summer. This year, I’ve been asked to participate in a twitter party as a compensated co-host. Here are the party details.

image

Hunger Free Summer May 23 4p ET Twitter Party

What: A Twitter party on National Hunger-Free Summer Day, May 23.

When: Thursday, May 23, at 4p ET – the party will last for 30 minutes.

Why: During the school year, 21.5 million children rely on free or reduced-price meals to help them from going hungry. When school is out, only 2.3 million children participate in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). This means there are millions of children at an increased risk of hunger during the summer. Children may not have access to summer meal assistance programs for a variety of reasons, but you CAN help ensure they are fed by supporting the ConAgra Foods Foundation’s Hunger-Free Summer program.

Who: Hunger-Free Summer spokesperson, actor, and proud father of five Chris O’Donnell (@chrisodonnell) will take us through the ConAgra Foods Foundation’s Hunger-Free Summer campaign during a 30-minute Twitter party with @ConAgraFoods, @ChildHungerEnds and @FeedingAmerica.

Where: Follow the party with this TweetGrid – http://bit.ly/10iMipT

Hashtag: #HungerFreeSummer

The Nashville Hunger Free Summer Kick Off Event with Kellie Pickler #HungerFreeSummer

July 16, 2012 by Momstart 17 Comments

I already knew the problem, kids go hungry during the summertime. What I didn’t know was that there are companies like ConAgra Foods working to help companies like Feeding America to make sure those children are being fed. A few weeks ago I went to Nashville Tennessee where I learned a lot about working to make a difference for children during the summer.

ConAgra Foods Foundation Hunger-Free Summer Kick Off

ConAgra Foods has been providing grants to programs across the US for them to use to help children in need. In Nashville ConAgra Foods brought in musical artist Kellie Pickler to help raise awareness and interest the local media. First thing I realized is that education is the best way to help charities, because when you let more people know, then more people can be helped and more people will receive services.

Second thing I learned was that there are way more children in need than I first realized. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than one in five children doesn’t have enough food to live active, healthful lives. This is just unacceptable.

Feeding America reports the following states have the highest instance of child food insecurity according to the "Map the Meal Gap: Child Food Insecurity 2012" study:

11. Washington, D.C. – 30.7%

12. Oregon – 29.0%

12. Arizona – 29.0%

14. New Mexico – 28.7%

15. Florida – 28.4%

16. Mississippi – 28.3%

16. Georgia – 28.3%

18. Nevada – 28.2%

19. Arkansas – 27.8%

10. North Carolina – 27.6%

An executive summary of the “Map the Meal Gap” report and interactive map can be found at: feedingamerica.org/mapthegap.

Third, I learned ways to help. One, you can volunteer at your local food bank or food pantry. In Nashville we had the opportunity to create the children’s weekend backpacks. These backpacks include food for breakfast and lunch for two days.

ConAgra Foods Foundation Hunger-Free Summer Kick Off

You can also help by downloading the Hunger Avengers Activity Booklet you can educate your children about the issue and ConAgra Foods will donate a meal to Feeding America. The long-term goal of the ConAgra Foods Foundation’s Hunger-Free Summer program is to provide, over the next five years, at least 25 percent more meals for children struggling with hunger through summer food programs.

Third, education others, create food drives of your own. I found that the food bank loves to get more food from others because it’s those food drives that give them more variety than they would otherwise have. Large companies donate large amounts of the same thing and I think people in need deserve more variety, they deserve to eat just like we do.

Hunger Free Summer: Did You Know Kids Go Hungry During The Summer?

July 3, 2012 by Momstart 18 Comments

Every year my MOMS Club has a summer cereal box food drive. If you’ve been following me for a few years you might even remember that a few times I’ve been able to get other companies to help us out with our cereal drives by donating cereal or matching how many boxes we were able to collect. WHY do we do this you might ask?

WP_000088

Kids go hungry during the summer.

Yes really they do. You see, during the school year 21 million children get lunch at school thanks to USDA’s free and reduced-priced lunches that are available to low-income families. When school gets out they don’t eat. There are programs out there to help but parents don’t know about them, they have no way to get to them, and not all communities have them.

The ConAgra Foods Foundation has pledged $5 million over five years to help ensure children have enough to eat during the summer. Funding for the Hunger-Free Summer campaign will expand summer meal programs to more children in more places.

This summer, the goal of the Hunger-Free Summer campaign is to help participating Feeding America food banks serve more children through unique and innovative programs. 23 Feeding America member food banks in 15 states will receive Hunger-Free Summer grants from the ConAgra Foods Foundation. These grants will be used to expand existing summer feeding programs, to establish new and innovative programs, and to make sure more families know that the program is available for their children.

The long-term goal of the ConAgra Foods Foundation’s Hunger-Free Summer program is to provide, over the next five years, at least 25 percent more meals for children struggling with hunger through summer food programs.WP_000080

You can help too. By downloading the Hunger Avengers Activity Booklet you can educate your children about the issue and ConAgra Foods will donate a meal to Feeding America.

I’m excited to be able to announce that I’m going to be working with ConAgra Foods and Feeding America to raise awareness for this amazing program. I’m a Summer Blogger with ConAgra Foods and will be compensated for my time but my heart is really into this program.

What is on the Barbeque?

June 13, 2010 by Momstart 3 Comments

hunts I love eating off the grill and summer time means more opportunities to eat outside. Conagra has the trio of necessities for an outdoor grilling session, mustard, ketchup, and of course hot dogs and they sent me a sample of all three to try out. At family barbeques every summer it seemed like the hotdogs were the hottest of the commodities. Probably because kids usually prefer hotdogs to hamburgers and since I was a kid that’s what I remember there being more of.

The Hebrew National hotdogs are made with premium cuts of beef and no fillers, by-products, artificial flavors or colors. I have two packages of them in my freezer just waiting for the perfect day. I’m looking forward to having them with the Gulden Mustard, and other members of my family will prefer the Hunt’s ketchup. With Hunt’s 100% Natural Ketchup (made with no high fructose corn syrup) or Gulden’s spicy brown mustard, you have all the makings of a classic summer dinner.

Conagra has really earned my support coming out of Blissdom. From there they made a ton of relationships with bloggers and together they did a lot of charity work making donations to food banks across the US. I wasn’t involved in any of this, but I saw it happening and love the teamwork put together for such a great cause. It’s just something small that I want to mention because it means a lot to me when large corporations put forth energy to help local communities.

Conagra makes a ton, I mean a TON of great products and brands.

“I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central  on behalf of ConAgra and received a picnic bag with samples of ConAgra products to facilitate my candid review. Mom Central also sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.”
