Spring Cleaning The Right Way With Swiffer & Febreze #BreatheHappy #SwifferEffect

April 8, 2015 by Beeb 30 Comments

Swiffer & Febreze

Compensation provided.

Spring has sprung, which means that it’s time to spruce up our homes with a little Spring cleaning! But in your effort to get things cleaner, did you realize that you might actually be stirring up allergens? If you’ve ever cleaned off something dusty and ended up sneezing your head off, you know what I’m talking about! That’s why the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America has partnered with Febreze and Swiffer to make your springtime cleaning easier.

Select products from both Swiffer and Febreze are now certified asthma & allergy friendly™ by the AAFA, which means that they can help reduce inanimate allergens around the house. I received a basket of these new asthma & allergy friendly products, and it was perfect timing to help me out today as I unpack and get organized on my first day back from my LA trip!

Swiffer 360 Duster

I’ve been buying Swiffer Dusters for years, and they are so awesome for cleaning off my chandelier and shelves! Swiffer Duster and Swiffer 360 Duster are both unscented and lock in dust and up to 70% of inanimate allergens – three times what a feather duster can do. I’ve been sneezing like crazy the past week, so I’m glad to not kick up any more dust than I need to while tidying up!

Swiffer Dry Sweeper

Unscented Swiffer Dry Sweeper is great for cleaning hardwood floors like mine, trapping and locking dust.

Febreze Fabric Refresher Allergen Reducer

Febreze Fabric Refresher Allergen Reducer is a scent-free product that you can spray on upholstery to reduce odors and up to 95% of inanimate allergens. I love to spray regular Febreze Fabric Refresher on my couch when I’m cleaning, so it’s great to have an unscented version to use, since many of my friends and family are sensitive to scents.

I’ve been cleaning my home with Febreze and Swiffer products for longer that I can remember, and I’m so happy that they have these allergy-friendly additions to the family to help us breathe easier while we freshen up our homes!

Bona Products Provide a Bona Fide Clean!

January 23, 2015 by Beeb Leave a Comment

Bona Mop

Product provided.

Aside from one small section of flooring upstairs, my house is all hardwood floors and linoleum. This means that I use a mop constantly – I’ve become somewhat of a “Mop connoisseur” over the years through trial and error. Since I use my mop with so much frequency, I have gone through quite a few over the years. I’m always looking for new and better cleaning solutions, so when I was at BlogHer last summer, the Bona product booth caught my eye.

Checking out #bonablog14

A photo posted by Beeb Ashcroft (@beebashcroft) on Jul 26, 2014 at 3:18pm PDT

After I got home, I chatted further with Bona and received a package containing some of their products. Funny story: Right after the package arrived, there was a minor kitchen disaster where one of Jai’s drinks got spilled all over the kitchen floor. He joked, “I guess this would be a good time to try out that new mop!” I insisted on taking a photo of the box before he pulled the mop out, so you can see the first mess that was cleaned using our new Bona Hardwood Floor Mop Motion. 😉

Bona Mop

This mop has been put to constant use since it arrived, and I love it. The cloth cleaning pad is reusable – it attaches with Velcro, and once I’ve gone through the house and cleaned all the floors, I just take it off, throw it into the washing machine, and it’s ready to use again! This is by far my favorite feature of the mop, as this cuts down on the waste and expense of buying disposable cleaning pad refills. The cleaning solution affixes to the mop via a bottle, which screws in. The bottle is also designed to be refillable, so once again, you cut down on costs.

The Bona Hardwood Floor Mop is lightweight, with a small battery compartment in the mop head. The mop head is fitted with a button which you press with your foot, which turns its optional vibration on and off for those times you want a little extra scrubbing action – but it’s not an extreme vibration, so it’s not going to scour your floor for you.

I’ve been using this mop constantly since I received it, and it’s been great. It covers a wide area with the size of the mop head and pad, and the fact that I can easily reuse and refill it makes it perfect for my all-hardwood-floors house, since I have to mop so often.

Bona Cabinet Cleaner

And that’s not the only way Bona has given me a hand around the house! I also received a bottle of their Cabinet Cleaner, and it’s been handy for wiping down my living room furniture – since Jai likes to build beautiful, custom wood furniture, having this cleaner is great for keeping it shiny!

If you have wood floors, furniture, or cabinets, check out Bona’s line of products for a bona fide clean!

Why Everyone Should Use Hypoallergenic Laundry Detergents

November 11, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

There’s a line of thinking which says that hypoallergenic laundry soaps are only for people that suffer various allergies themselves. While of course people with allergies should use hypoallergenic laundry detergents, they’re not the only ones. There’s a case to be made for everyone in a family to make this type of switch. If you’re part of a growing family, it’s always better to take the proactive approach – especially when there are other benefits to taking the hypoallergenic route.

Allergens Can Trigger Attacks over Time

clip_image002First, laundry detergents are a very common culprit of allergic reactions. Allergies are particularly difficult because it’s your own body attacking itself. Sometimes when your body is exposed to a chemical or substance it will produce a massive autoimmune response even if the substance itself is harmless.

It’s not a matter of something in the soap being "toxic" or otherwise harmful to you; it might be a simple scent agent that’s supposed to make your wardrobe smell like Spring Rain and instead causes your body to react as though it’s under a threat. You might think that you’re in the clear as far as that goes, as you’ve been cleaning your clothes for years without ill effects.

That’s not always the case, however. Allergies can develop at any time, even (or especially) to substances that you’ve been exposed to before, according to WebMD. You might have used the same detergent 1,001 times and the 1,002 exposure will be the one to give you a rash. When the very thing causing your reactions are in your clothes themselves that can lead to a very messy sort of problem.

You Can Come into Contact with Allergic People

You could go your whole life without actually running into this problem, but that doesn’t mean that everyone in your family would be so lucky, or everyone you meet on the street. If you’re washing your clothes in allergenic laundry soap you’re taking a gamble every time you lend your friend a sweater, or hold a coworker’s baby. It’s impossible to live your life with everyone else completely on your mind, but it’s a practical step to take if you’re going to be working with large groups of people or if you’re expecting a fresh addition to the family. Hypoallergenic laundry soaps are the considerate choice before you donate clothes or blankets to shelters or charity as well. You never know who is going to pick them up.

Look for "Free and Clear"

The most common cause of allergies in reaction to laundry soaps are the scents and the dyes. Some soaps are made to have that crystal blue look that’s supposed to make your whites whiter, or to fill the air with lavender when you spread your freshly laundered sheets onto the bed. When you’re looking for a kind of laundry soap that is hypoallergenic you can either look in the name, like the laundry detergent from Honest Company, or you can look for phrases like "Free and Clear". This means they’re not adding in fresh scents or extra dyes. Of course, sometimes the allergy is to a base ingredient itself. If you find yourself or a member of your family struggling with persistent itchy skin it might take a couple of tries for you to find the detergent that’s really right for you. It can be a bit tricky, but looking for phrases like that will at least give you a place to start.

They Tend to Rinse out More Completely

One of the main causes of skin irritation for people with delicate skin overlaps with one of the causes of allergic reactions: laundry soap that doesn’t rinse out all the way. When you’re carrying around half the soup in the laundry load in your sweater it’s not surprising that you might have an adverse reaction or two. The great thing about hypoallergenic laundry soap is that they tend to rinse out more completely. Less soap in your clothes means that you’re going to be carrying around less potential irritation even if you don’t have allergies.

You can add to this by choosing liquid soap over powder, according to Stain Removal 101. Though it’s just as good at getting things clean as powdered laundry soap, it rinses out even more easily, according to Baby Center. This basically means that you don’t have to resort to an extra spin cycle to be sure you’re getting the last of the soap.

The Bottom Line

There is a pretty strong case for everyone using hypoallergenic laundry soaps. Why tempt fate or bother your family members or friends when you can have clothes that are just as clean and carry around less soap residue? A simple, no fuss change can keep your clothes clean and soft while also keeping your skin blemish free and even softer with each and every load.

Cleaning With A Smaller Carbon Footprint: Walmart’s Great Values Naturals Line #WMTGreen

January 21, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

This post is brought to you by Walmart’s Great Values Naturals line and The Motherhood. All opinions are – as always – honest and my own.

I’m going to be completely honest with you. Cleaning is not my favorite thing. I hate gloving up for chemicals, I hate getting on my hands and knees and I hate having to tell the kids no they can’t help because I’m using bleach or a strong cleaning product that I just don’t feel safe letting my kids use. My Kids love to help. So when they want to help, I let them use just plain soap and water and sometimes that’s just not enough to get the stains out of the table or floor. I want the children to be able to help me (under supervision of course).

image

I feel using the new Great Values Naturals cleaning line gives me much more ease when allowing my kids to help me clean. I know they are getting older but I’m still really overprotective and these make me feel better.

Clean with confidence.

  • No need to wear gloves or masks while cleaning.
  • No irritating fumes or fragrances.
  • No phosphates, bleach or chlorine: no toxic residue on dishes.

Photo4

The new Great Value Naturals product line includes four products:

· Liquid laundry detergent
· Multi-purpose cleaner
· Glass and window cleaner
· Automatic dishwasher gel

Photo3

Many people think that natural isn’t as effective, well that’s just a myth. Great Value Naturals cleaning products are made from plant-based, all-natural Evolve® cleaning technology making them 100% chemical-free and toxin-free, biodegradable and non-allergenic.. Evolve is the first all-natural cleaning technology that is lab-tested to achieve results at levels of efficacy previously seen only through the use of petroleum-based cleaners, detergents, degreasers and solvents.

Photo2

The best part is that they’re affordable. Most products that are natural are more expensive, well Walmart has kept them at the perfect price points for families.  Check out these prices.

  • Great Value Naturals Liquid Laundry Detergent :: $8.97 for a 100 oz. bottle (64 loads)
  • Great Value Naturals Multi-Surface Cleaner :: $2.47 for a 32 oz. sprayer
  • Great Value Naturals Glass & Window Cleaner :: $1.98 for a 32 oz. sprayer
  • Great Value Naturals Automatic Dishwasher Gel :: $3.97 for a 75 oz. bottle

Those are prices that I can get on board with, especially when I know the products are safer for my family. My kids are into cleaning so I’m all into letting them clean while they think it’s fun!

If you’re interested in learning more about Walmart’s new Great Value Naturals line, you can check them out on Walmart’s The Green Room website or on Facebook or Twitter. You can also use the Great Value Naturals store locator to see if your local Walmart carries the product line.

New Year New Laundry Routine For Me Laundry Tips & Arm & Hammer

January 3, 2014 by Momstart 1 Comment

arm & hammerWell, the fad of  using the washing machine and dryer has worn off for my husband. So I’m back to doing laundry and after a house full of people we have a ton of laundry to do. I mean I have a lot, blankets, sheets, and then the towels.

imageSpending one whole day doing laundry is not my cup of tea so I really need to get on top of it and do a load a day. There are almost always whites to do and the power of ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda helps remove tough dirt and odor while delivering long lasting freshness that we like in our laundry.

arm & hammer detergent

Arm & Hammer actually has a great step by step program to a successful laundry routine. Here is a summary of their laundry tips.

You can sort your laundry which I do by color.

    • Sort by Color:
Whites, light colors, similar bright colors, and dark colors.
    • Fabric Type:
Delicate fabric, laces, lingerie, washable silk, etc. require gentle care and need to be washed separately. Lint-giving fabrics (chenille, terry, etc.) should not be washed with lint-attracting items, such as corduroy, permanent press, dark socks, etc.
    • Soil Content:
Heavily soiled work or play clothes should be washed separately from lightly soiled clothes.

Decide what water temperature you want to use. I almost always use cold.

Be sure to Pre-treat your laundry. (with kids you’re always doing this, this is about to be a chocolate stain)

IMG_7258

    • Pre-treat:

      • Liquid Detergent: Pour ARM & HAMMER™ Liquid Detergent directly onto tough stains and rub in.
      • Powder Detergent: Apply a paste of detergent and water, rub on stain.
    • Pre-soak:
Use for large stained areas or deep set soils.
      • Liquid Detergent: Apply ½ cap of liquid detergent to washer with warm water, soak garment overnight, drain machine, then launder as usual
      • Powder Detergent: Apply 1 full scoop of powder detergent to washer with warm water, soak garment overnight, drain machine, then launder as usual
    • Pre-wash:
      • For heavily soiled garments, run through pre-wash cycle before laundering.

You can also use additives, don’t forget to add them. I only use additives on extra smelly laundry like puke covered laundry, and over the holidays poor Miles had the flu. Here are tips for types of additives to use.

ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda Additive:

        • Liquid Laundry Detergent Booster: ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda helps your liquid laundry detergent work harder for you, because it helps maintain the optimal pH balance necessary for detergents to work well. Add 1/2 cup of Baking Soda to your wash with the usual amount of liquid detergent.
        • Deodorizing Your Wash: To remove the stubborn smells in your clothes while you wash, add 1/2 cup of ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda to the rinse cycle. It neutralizes the odors, leaving your clothes smelling fresh and clean.
        • Chlorine Bleach Booster: Use ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda to help your liquid chlorine bleach work harder. Add 1/2 cup of Baking Soda (1/4 cup for front-loading machines) with your usual amount of liquid bleach. Your whites will be whiter and your clothes will be cleaner and fresher.

ARM & HAMMER™ Super Washing Soda:

        • The all natural laundry detergent booster that adds extra cleaning and freshening power!

        OxiClean™ Stain Remover Products:

        • OxiClean™ Stain Remover products release oxygen to target the stains, rather than the fabric, removing many tough stains. Available in several forms: Powder, Spray, and in-wash additive.

        Bleach Additive:

        • Color-safe bleach is the bleach choice for colored garments. Chlorine bleach for whites. Test garment for colorfastness by dipping a hidden portion of garment in bleach product for a few minutes. Use with hottest water that fabric will allow.

    image
And then for drying, I dry almost everything on low. If something had a stain you need to make sure the stain is gone before you dry it. Whites I do dry on high. Another tip:

Try ARM & HAMMER Total™ 2-in-1 Dryer Cloths: ARM & HAMMER Total™ 2-in-1 Dryer Cloths soften, control static cling and give you the long-lasting freshness you’d expect from ARM & HAMMER™ Laundry Products.

But the best tip I can give you as a parent doing laundry, make the kids do their part. If they are old enough to dress themselves they are old enough to put their own laundry away.

Mr. Clean LiquidMuscle Cleans Times Square #NewYearsClean

January 2, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

    This is a compensated post.

New Year’s begins with such a positive outlook, we start off watching the New York celebration on TV as we live on the opposite coast. I was looking on Facebook on the 31’st and saw my good friend Mitch (Gay NYC Dad) trying to push up the ball. It made me laugh and wish I was in New York for the big celebration. That’s my goal, to one day spend New Year’s Eve in Times Square.

    image

SO if there is a big party you must know there is a big mess to clean up right?

Mr. Clean teamed up with a 25 person "Mr. Clean Team" led by "The Accidental Housewife" Julie Edelman in Times Square to clean up after the party. I would love to meet Mr. Clean sometime. I mean check out these photos of the clean up crew that helped.

Usually the Time Square Alliance and the DSNY clean up all by themselves, using 22 trucks, 24 mechanical sweepers and 37 backpack blowers to clear an estimated 40 to 50 tons of confetti, party hats and other materials from the celebration.

    Screenshot (13)

Each year, the DSNY completes the heavy clean-up of Times Square in record time without any help. This year, with Mr. Clean’s help the finishing sparkle to Duffy Square’s famous Red Steps was created with Mr. Clean® Liquid Muscle™, a new multi-purpose concentrated cleaning gel that delivers 2.5x more power in every drop.

The new Mr. Clean® Liquid Muscle™ has 2.5 times more power in every drop vs. Mr. Clean 40oz. With its new auto-stop cap feature, Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle delivers the right amount of cleaning gel with one squeeze – free of mess. It penetrates dirt, fights grease and lifts stains with less going to waste. Liquid Muscle can be used on a variety of surfaces, including sealed floors, tables, countertops, sinks, stovetops and more.

What Did Mr. Clean have to Say?

Mr. Clean was quoted saying. "I’m excited to be a part of the New Year’s Eve celebration at Times Square," he said. "It’s combining two of my favorite things: parties, and cleaning up after parties. Plus, not only do I get to try out my new Liquid Muscle on one of the toughest tests imaginable, I also get a chance to visit Broome Street in Lower Manhattan. I hope it’s exactly what it sounds like."

I’ve been to Lower Manhattan and can say it sure is!

Stains Stick to It, Not your Home! CLR

August 19, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Stains Stick to It, Not your Home!

    by Alyson LaBarge
    MomStart Contributor

If you are like me with the kids home all summer, your house seems dirtier than ever.  Smudges on the walls, grease on the sofa and stains in the carpet…yep, a regular pig stye.  So when I was offered a chance to try out some of CLR’s cleaning products, I was thrilled.

CLR, a product of Jelmar  has been around since 1949.  Famous for cleaning Calcium, Lime and Rust, I was familiar with their basic cleaner and use it pretty much exclusively for calcium and lime stains.  I have also used the CLR BBQ Grill Cleaner and have always been pleased with the results.  The one product I received but had not yet tried was their CLR Stain Magnet.  The product could have not been more perfect.

An all-purpose, multi-surface stain remover safe for tough stains on a multitude of surfaces.  Here are some of those surfaces:
Painted Walls, Hardwood Floors, Baseboards, Carpet, Fabric, Glass, Metal, Brick, Concrete, Marble Laminated Countertops, Fully Cured and Oil-Based Painted Surfaces, Hard Plastics, Automobile Tires, Wood, Grout, Fiberglass
Here is an example of just how well it worked for me.  I had these three stains of unknown origin.  I followed the directions and sprayed the stains liberally then let them sit.  A few minutes later, with a quick scrub and touch of a towel then a quick vacuum and viola!  Beautiful, stain-free results!

Beautiful, right?  Apparently it also removes tough stains and spots from nail polish, lipstick, paint, shoe polish, oil, red wine, ink, crayon and permanent markers, things that today’s Mom is likely to have to have to deal with at some point in time.  Top it all off that the CLR Stain Magnet is even an eco-friendly formula and you cannot go wrong.

So the next time you have some unwanted spots, calcium or rust marks or disfiguring stains, think CLR and their great range of products, available online or at many local retailers near you.

We received the above mentioned products in order to conduct this honest review. We were not compensated in any other way. All opinions are our own.

    Scotch Brite Kitchen Cleaning Products

    August 5, 2013 by Momstart 1 Comment

I’m cleaning with Scotch Brite Cleaning products this summer and they sent me everything I need to get my kitchen in top notch. They sent me the Scotch Brite Clean Curve Dishwasher with refills, Stay Clean sponges, Stay Clean Dishwand and the Stay Clean Scrubby Dish cloths.

    IMG_7650

Miles found my stack of cleaning supplies; He was begging to clean the dishes. He started cleaning the cabinets and the counters too, anything he could reach. I had to yell at him not to clean the floor with mommy’s new Clean Curve Dishwasher. I love any product that gets the kids into cleaning, let’s just say, I’m not that great at it. You can put the right products in my hands but I’m still a disaster when it comes to cleaning. IE: I don’t like to clean. Someone once told me that’s why you have kids.

    IMG_7651

I really love the dish wands, I always have. The first time I ever saw one was thanks to my husband he purchased one a long time ago. I like these because of the shape, the clean curve dishwand gets the sides of the glasses and the bottom making sure you don’t miss a spot.

    The Clean Curve Dishwand Features:

Unique pad shape is designed to reach bottoms of glasses

    • Under-the-handle soap-release button for easy dispensing
    • Intuitive soap-level visibility
    • Twist cap allows for refilling and discourages leaking

    IMG_7652

The Stay Clean Dish Wand Features:

Featuring a long-lasting, durable scrubbing surface and non-scratch cleaning in a variety of cleaning tool types.

    • Won’t trap food — guaranteed
    • Even eggs and cheese won’t stick
    • Refill fits Scotch-Brite® Dishwand handles

    IMG_7653

The Stay Clean Scrubbing Dish Cloth Features:

Featuring a long-lasting, durable scrubbing surface and non-scratch cleaning in a variety of cleaning tool types.

    • Won’t trap food — guaranteed
    • Even eggs and cheese won’t stick
    • Cellulose is 100% plant-based and is better for absorbing than other materials such as foam
    • Flexible for tight spaces.

    IMG_7655

The Stay Clean product line is a line that is tough but soft, food won’t stick to the unique scrubbing surface and it’s non-scratch making it safe for glassware. Cellulose is 100% plant-based and is better for absorbing than other materials such as foam and it’s comfortable in your hand with easy-grip shapes in the sponges. And now just for fun you can use the scrubbing sponges that have fun words on them. I’m going with World Peace and no grease.

Tackling Tough Kitchen Messes: Scrubbing Bubbles Meets fantastik

    October 13, 2012 by Momstart 157 Comments

The two rooms we mostly live in in our house are the living room and the kitchen. Our dining room is an extension of the kitchen and our modern home is one really big great room. Therefore, the kitchen is a very highly trafficked area. I cook, we eat, we run. The process repeats and cleaning happens when and as often as I have time to. So sometimes I look at the floor like what is that in the floor, or how did that get there and sometimes even, ewe how long has that been in the floor. I also like to make fried chicken and the grease splatters on the walls and tiles and they are hard to get clean sometimes. So I was really excited to try these new promising products from fantastik and Scrubbing Bubbles.

After 40 years as a hardworking ally in the bathroom; Scrubbing Bubbles® has merged with the power of fantastik® to tackle America’s toughest kitchen messes.

  • Lemon Power Scrubbing Bubbles® All Purpose Cleaner with fantastik® kills 99.9 percent of germs and bacteria3. The all-purpose cleaner leaves a lemon scent with no filmy residue, cutting through tough kitchen grease and grime throughout the home.

I LOVE using the Lemon Power Scrubbing Bubbles. I’ve been using it on the floor and on the table and things are shiny after I use it. The wood floor was so shiny and it wasn’t slick. Last time I used something to clean it with a lemon scent it was so slick that my son lost his legs under him and slammed into the floor. This time, it was clean and not slick and there was a very light lemon scent; not over bearing it was just right. The Scrubbing Bubbles 5-1 bleach was great for my walls. The grease and smudges just came right off. I also found the filmy residue from the Heavy duty scrubbing bubbles to be easy to use from the kitchen to the bathroom.
