By Dayna:

Curious George is a big deal at our house.  Since we don’t let our kids watch a lot of TV, we’re picky about what they do watch, and Curious George is one of the few that makes the cut.  We’ve seen every episode at least twice and have the theme song memorized.  So when my daughter saw a new George movie advertised, it was cause for excitement!

Curious George Swings into Spring is a one-hour special, to be aired on PBS on Earth Day, April 22.  Without spoiling it for you, the story revolves around our favorite mischievous monkey experiencing spring fever and enjoying the great outdoors.  It didn’t disappoint my kids, so I’m sure it will satisfy your little critics, too!

What I like best about Curious George is that my kids always learn something without realizing they’re learning.  After watching the movie, my three-year-old suddenly decided to shake of the winter hibernation and started asking constantly to go play outside, a win for any mom!  We made a bird feeder out of a recycled plastic bottle, chopstick, and twine, and had fun watching our little feathered friends flock to it.  Then, we got some tomato seeds to plant and are looking forward to seeing them grow.  All around, Curious George provided a fun family day, watching the movie and then getting outside and enjoying what we learned! Thanks, PBS!

About Dayna:

Dayna is a children’s counselor turned stay-at-home mom after the birth of her first child three years ago.  She is married and has two beautiful daughters.  When kids permit, she and her husband love to travel, enjoy good food, and spend time with friends. And she is an amazing friend.

Sofia The First: Once Upon a Princess DVD Release

February 22, 2013 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Disney Junior’s animated television movie “Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess,” which was crowned the #1 preschool cable TV telecast of all time when it aired on November 18, 2012, arrives on DVD March 5, 2013. Zoe has watched it five times since we’ve opened it and every time we have friends over she has to show it to them too. It’s an adorable little movie about a regular little girl becoming a princess and it led to the TV series Sofia The First.

clip_image001Now for the first time on DVD, young viewers can join Sofia the First as she experiences first-hand what it really means to be part of the enchanting world of a princess. When Sofia’s mom marries the king, she’s whisked off to the castle, where she learns what it means to be a true princess. In addition to learning how to fit in with her new family including her step-father, King Roland II, and step-siblings, Amber and James, Sofia quickly discovers that looking like a princess isn’t all that difficult, but possessing the characteristics of a true princess – honesty, loyalty, courage, independence, compassion and grace – is what makes one truly royal. While living in a captivating world of castles, wizards and flying horses, Sofia is a relatable peer-to-peer princess who is experiencing many of the same social situations as young viewers at home – learning how to fit in, making new friends and conquering new skills. Helping her in her journey are the three headmistresses of Royal Prep Academy – Fauna, Flora and Merryweather (the beloved fairies seen in Disney’s classic "Sleeping Beauty"); the royal steward, Baileywick; and a group of cute woodland creatures including a rabbit named Clover; as well as Cinderella, a classic Disney Princess, who makes a special visit to offer Sofia words of wisdom.

About The TV Series:

For more details on the show, please visit www.disney.go.com/disneyjunior/sofia-the-first.

It’s sure to make any little girl smile. The songs made me even giggle a little.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie’s Bow-tique Review

February 4, 2010 by Momstart 4 Comments

clip_image001My son has always been the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse fan in the house. He has a Mickey Mouse Doll, a Minnie Mouse Doll, a Pluto Doll. There is just something about that song Hot Dog. You know, Hot Dog, Hot Dog, Hot Diggity Dog, Hot Dog Hot Dog Hot Diggity Dog, Come inside it’s fun inside. He just gets up and starts dancing at the end of every episode. Miles tries to move his hands like Mickey Mouse does. He’s just adorable. Miles also likes to repeat the words “OH Toodles”.  On Tuesday February 9th Walt Disney Studios will release MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE: MINNIE’S BOW-TIQUE on DVD! We were sent an early copy of this to write a review of it. This new release features four Minnie-themed stories including a never-before-seen episode and a fun Minnie magnet bow frame. ‘Minnie’s Pajama Party,’ and ‘Minnie’s Bee Story,’ include Disney’s Adventure Mode – an interactive game using the remote control with multiple play levels.

My daughter just loves the bow frame and magnet set, she ripped that right up and took it to the fridge. We just receive a new fridge and it’s actually magnetic. So happy about that. That started about an hour of playtime with her brother without the TV.

MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE: MINNIE’S BOW-TIQUE

All of the episodes on this DVD are about Minnie Mouse. She is the best party host, always thinking about her friends and their needs.

Minnie’s Bow-tique

This is a new episode that will air in April. It’s the grand opening of Minnie’s Bow-tique, a store jam-packed with every kind of bow and bowtie imaginable. The selections include: the "Glow-Bow", a bow that changes color with every mood; the "Grow-Bow", a bow that grows to tremendous size by just adding water; flying "Butterfly-Bows"; and a "Photo-Bow" that snaps instant pictures. Problems arise when Pete, embarrassed about buying a lady’s bow for his favorite aunt, causes a few accidental mishaps in the new store. However, super salesperson Minnie finds the perfect bow for Pete. The Bow-tique’s grand opening is a success – and it all ends in a Big Bow Show with the Clubhouse gang modeling the latest fashions under the biggest bow of all, a colorful, sky-high Rain-Bow.

Minnie’s Bee Story

In Minnie’s Bee Story they all set out looking for their friend Bee, they encounter the Professor and Donald does not behave very well. He tries to catch bee with a net, but in the end they are all friends.

Minnie’s Picnic

Minnie wants to have a picnic on the new Mickey Mouse picnic grounds. They grab all the supplies they need for 12 friends, load up Toodles and off they go. Of course when they get there they run into all kinds of trouble. Well, you know the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, it’s not really trouble it’s more like, oops, how do we fix or accomplish this. Great beginning to problem solving skills for your children.

Minnie’s Pajama Party* (Never-before-seen episode until 4/6/10)

Minnie and the girls set up a fun Pajama Party sleepover for the day – but it’s not as easy as it sounds, especially with the addition of Pete and Willie the Giant! When Willie the Giant comes they have to move the party outside. In this episode they learn how to divide things into equal parts amount all of their friends. First Minnie starts with a pie and then it’s the clubhouse. Each friend gets their own space to sleep.

Dora The Explorer: Let’s Explore! Dora’s greatest adventures

January 28, 2010 by Momstart 2 Comments

Dora The Explorer: Let's Explore! Dora's Greatest AdventuresWith Over 3 hours of entertainment this is the DVD to get for your Dora Loving kids.  Dora The Explorer: Let’s Explore! Dora’s Greatest Adventures will be released on February 2, 2010 full of Dora. There are 8 different episodes and each is filled with a different lesson. In one episode Dora and Boots must create a map of their own to save their friend the map.

Dora has been teaching my son a few words. He can say, Dora, Boots, Backpack, purple backpack, map. When it’s time to use the map, he says map, louder and louder. The Map, The Map. I would probably still not like Dora if it wasn’t for her educational value, and the fact that my kids want to watch her all the time. I just can’t hate her.

My daughter has decided to call this one Yellow Dora, I think it’s because the packaging has quite a bit of yellow on it. I was sure that she would be calling it Purple Dora, because the third Episode is Journey to the Purple Planet. Dora teaches Spanish, colors, shapes and counting. Zoe can count all the way up to 14 and can say her entire alphabet. I’m not saying Dora is responsible, I did a little work.

So here is the episode line up:

Dora The Explorer: Let’s Explore! Dora’s Greatest Adventures

Lost Map: When a goofy bird mistakes Map for a stick and puts him in a nest, Dora and Boots need help to draw their own map and rescue their good friend.

I liked that in this episode Dora and Boots made the map.

Hide and Go Seek: To win Senor Tucan’s trophy, Dora will need your help finding her friends in the Spooky Cave, the Squirrel Trees, and the Rainforest!

I liked Senor Tucan most in this episode.

Journey to the Purple Planet: Blast into space with Dora and Boots to bring five lost space creatures back home to the Purple Planet!

I liked the little aliens, and their cute little names even though I can’t think of them right now.

Rescue, Rescue, Rescue: Baby Jaguar is stuck in a tree! Isa is stuck in a hole! And Benny is stuck atop a geyser! Will you help Dora and Boots race to everyone’s rescue?

I liked watching them decide who to save first, how does a person make a choice like that?

Star Catcher: Abuela gives Dora a Star Pocket making her a Star Catcher! But when Swiper swipes it, Dora needs help from you and the Explorer Stars!

I liked my kids learning about shapes in this one.

Star Mountain: Oh, No! Swiper swiped Dora’s necklace and threw it to the top of Star Mountain! To get it back, Dora needs your help, and the help of some Explorer Stars too!

I liked that there were also shapes in this one too.

Boots To The Rescue: Dora wrote a song for music classs, but she left it in Boot’s room! Will  you help him on his big solo adventure to school?

I liked the song about speaking Spanish in this one. It’s very catchy.

Swiper the Explorer: To help a lost baby fox get back to his Fox Hole, Dora and Boots get help from an unlikely hero….Swiper.

I liked that Swiper wanted to be helpful.

Yes this DVD was sent to me by Nickelodeon for purposes of this review. The link above is an affiliate link, I think I’m required to tell you that.

Word World My Fuzzy Valentine

January 22, 2010 by Momstart 3 Comments

Welcome to the place where words come alive. Word World! Word World has become one of my favorite shows because it encourages the recognition of words. I’m sure my daughter can see that with all that she catches on to.  I was first introduced to Word World when I was at another Moms house. her kids were watching it and it was after I had been working on letters with my daughter. She said ‘e’ and there was an e. I was so excited, she was only 2 years old and recognized the letter. Wow, the same story every time I watch a word world video.

How about a new one, my husband does not like Word World and I can’t for the life of me figure out why? I love watching Word World. It comes on PBS and is put out on DVD’s by NCircle Entertainment. My kids love watching Word World. It’s entertaining and teaches them words with letters and the turns them into pictures. It’s a very visual presentation. Lots of people are visual learners.

This Word World DVD comes with two different episodes.  Both are sure to get everyone in the mood for Valentine’s Day!

My Fuzzy Valentine:

When SHEEP decides she wants to make a special Valentine song for her pal BEAR, she runs into trouble finding the perfect rhyme and makes BEAR a Valentine song with real heart.

The Love Bug:

BUG wants to sign a Valentine for his favorite WordFriend, but he doesn’t know how to write his name. With lots of encouragement from FROG he learns that with a little practice, he can write his name.

My favorite out of the two was watching My Fuzzy Valentine. It was really cute watching sheep try to come up with just the right rhyme and we used this opportunity to start teaching Zoe how to rhyme.

NCircle was kind enough to send us a copy of  My Fuzzy Valentine dvd it retails for only 5.99 US$. (I think this is a great price for this educational show).  A Department of Education funded study has shown that WordWorld improves a child’s literacy skills.

Thanks to NCircle Entertainment we were sent My Fuzzy Valentine, one of the newer WordWorld releases…just in time for Valentines day!

Word World: A Kooky Spooky Halloween review

October 4, 2009 by Momstart 2 Comments

WordWorld: A Kooky Spooky HalloweenWelcome to the place where words come alive. Word World! I was sent this DVD to review a month ago. I think. I’m really not sure when it arrived because it went to the house we no longer live at and the new people that live there were kind enough to keep it and call up their realtor and he called my realtor and I went to pick it up at their house. They really are a nice family. That was way above what I would have expected anyone to do.

I was so excited.

The other mom said she loves Word World because it brings back memories of when she used to make pictures out of words. The only one I ever did was boy or girl. She had a larger imagination than I did and so did the creators of this show.

I love watching Word World too. It comes on PBS and is put out on DVD’s by NCircle Entertainment.

NCircle was kind enough to send us a preview DVD of WordWorld: A Kooky Spooky Halloween to review.  It’s a great DVD, it only has two episodes on it so it’s just a little short. All the characters need Halloween costumes and one of the characters accidentally scares all the rest. 😉 You’ll have to watch it to find out.

My Daughter was left saying

“Watch it again mommy”

“Watch it again”
