Sophia The First The Floating Palace 4/8

April 1, 2014 by Momstart 2 Comments

Sofia the First The Floating Palace was on the Disney Channel a few months back and my kids were all over it. We had to record it and watch it and they loved it. I actually liked it too. Sofia and her family take an adventure on a boat and Sofia is convinced that mermaids are real and she sort of falls into an adventure of her life.

clip_image001

Do YOU believe in mermaids? You will – when you set sail on a magical full-length adventure under the sea with Sofia the First! After Sofia helps a young mermaid named Oona, Sofia’s amulet grants her the power to transform into a mermaid and visit her new friend’s secret underwater kingdom. But when Cedric (disguised as a sea monster) plots to steal Oona’s enchanted Mermaid Comb, danger surfaces for both worlds. With a little help from special guest, Princess Ariel, Sofia embarks on an adventure to rescue Oona. Overflowing with oceans of song-filled fun – plus three more exciting episodes – Sofia the First: The Floating Palace proves that when families and friends work together, they can weather any storm and save the day!

Ariel Winter (ABC TV’s “Modern Family”) as Sofia; Sara Ramirez (ABC TVs "Grey’s Anatomy”) as Queen Miranda; Wayne Brady (TV’s “Let’s Make A Deal") as Clover; and Tim Gunn (TV’s “Project Runway”) as Baileywick

The Croods – A Must See, More Than Expected, Boulder Blasting Hit

clip_image002By: Ashley

Sometimes you head into a movie thinking that you know what to expect: a few jokes, some kid appropriate humor, a little heartwarming moment or two, and a happy ending. When I visited DreamWorks for a screening of The Croods, I thought I knew what to expect – and I was wrong. Instead of a cute little kids’ movie, The Croods proved itself to be a movie for everyone filled with stunning animation, pulse raising suspense, true laugh out loud moments, and heart touching scenes making tissues a requirement. Beyond all of that was something even more unexpected. Within The Croods, are unexpected, but comfortable layers of rich story bringing up the themes of family, fear, and searching for the meaning of life. Who knew you could squeeze all of that into one little movie?

The Croods is the newest film from DreamWorks scheduled to hit theaters on March 22. It’s a film that follows this first family through a hilarious and outrageous adventure through the harsh “Croodaceous” time period.

All of the layers of story and themes under the surface of The Croods are really what make it special to me. While at the parent blogger summit earlier this month, I had the chance to hear two producers (Kristine Belson and Jane Hartwell) and two directors (Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco) of the film share some behind the scenes info on all things Croods. These deep themes were one of the original roots of the entire project, so it’s no wonder it’s so effective. When asked “why cavemen?” Kirk DeMicco had this to say.

“The metaphor and the theme of change is such a relevant thing that everybody goes through…The cavemen were a perfect metaphor…All they’ve got really to talk about is just life and what it means because they don’t have jobs, they don’t have all the other pressures…That’s what really came through. What’s the biggest change that anyone should fear?”

clip_image004

Now I don’t want to get you thinking The Croods is all deep message and serious undertones. It’s not. There are plenty of hysterical moments that carry the meaning of the movie too. Can you imagine the fear of technology… when you’re a caveman? What in the world do you do when you see fire? Here’s what The Croods do.

The dynamics of family are also a huge part of this movie, and one of the biggest dynamics is that between Eep and her father Grug. As a former teenage girl (not that I always want to admit it!), I remember the days of absolutely hating my dad… and loving him more than anything at the same time. Kirk DeMicco (director) even added, “Here at DreamWorks, there’s been lots of families of friends, that’s the way it is. But, actually, a true father-daughter story was pretty unique, and everyone was really engaged by that.”

Whether it’s to laugh at the changes technology brings to this first family ever, or just to do a little thinking about life and how you always need to reach for the light, you need to check out The Croods from DreamWorks. The Croods hits theaters March 22.

Pocahontas & Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World 2 Movie Collection on Blu-ray Combo Pack

August 18, 2012 by Momstart 7 Comments

My daughter told me that she wanted to save her money to purchase Pocahontas at Disney World when we go this year. She’s never seen it before this week. My friends at Disney have saved my daughter’s allowance by sending us a copy of Pocahontas & Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World 2 Movie Collection on Blu-ray. WOW, a two in one deal. So we popped it in and watched it together. We all watched it. Miles and Zoe both Pocahontas2MovieCollectionBLurayreally liked it. I have always loved the music of Pocahontas, the songs were so magical and heart warming. Disney did a great job bringing her to life on film.

I also told Zoe that Pocahontas was a real American Indian Princess and her eyes got so wide. She asked me if Pocahontas ever married Captain John Smith and I told her no and explained why and she didn’t like my reasons. Sigh!!!

“Pocahontas” tells the story of a free-spirited girl (voiced by Irene Bedard) who wonders what adventures wait “Just Around the River Bend.” Pocahontas – along with her playful pals Meeko the raccoon and Flit the hummingbird – relies on the guidance of her loving and wise Grandmother Willow (voice by Linda Hunt) when English settlers arrive on the shores of her village. Her meeting with the courageous Captain John Smith (voiced by Mel Gibson) leads to a friendship that bridges the gap between two cultures and changes history.

The Two-Movie Collection, Blu-ray debut features exciting all-new bonus material including “Drawing Inspiration: The Lost Story of Hiawatha,” a fascinating behind-the-scenes featurette showcasing how Walt Disney and his team were once developing a full-length animated feature called “Hiawatha,” that ultimately directly influenced the development of “Pocahontas.”

Pocahontas & Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World 2 Movie Collection on Blu-ray Combo Pack comes out August 21st.

Larry The Cable Guy in ToothFairy 2 #ToothFairy2

July 10, 2012 by Momstart 14 Comments

TF2_BD

My daughter has a loose tooth and has been wiggling it constantly. Her father already told her that the Tooth Fairy isn’t real so she said to him, that means daddy that you’re Santa Claus and mommy must be the Tooth Fairy. We laughed at her intelligence and ability to make it fun. Do you tell your kids the truth or let them believe in these fun characters for a while?

In the movie Tooth Fairy, it’s very much placed in the same kind of idea that The Santa Claus is placed in. Larry Guthrie (Larry the Cable Guy) is a fun-loving dreamer with a serious mission: win back the love of his life before she makes a terrible mistake and marries the wrong man! In his attempt to get back on his long lost love’s good side, Larry visits the school where she works and make’s a horrible mistake… He accidentally tells a child that the Tooth Fairy is just a myth. Crushing the child’s dreams sets off a chain of events that are far more than Larry bargained for including being “sentenced” to become a Tooth Fairy or face having his memories erased for good…PLUS losing any chance of getting back the girl of his dreams! Larry is brought before a 500-year-old Tooth Fairy stuck in a 10-year-old girl’s body (played by newcomer Brady Reiter) for sentencing. The Tooth Fairy demands that Larry make retribution by temporarily serving as a Tooth Fairy and proving that Tooth Fairies really do exist. His mission? Larry must collect 20 teeth in 20 days. With his orders in hand, Larry embarks on a journey to prove the existence of Tooth Fairies and to win back the love of his life.

We watched the movie today and I was expecting the children to say it’s boring and ask me to turn on something else. Instead they both were laughing and giggling saying that Larry is really funny. They actually were able to pay attention and understood the storyline. This is a big step for us because before this movie, only cartoons made the cut. I liked it too. I was supposed to be working all morning and I found myself spending more time watching the movie than I did actually writing. OOPS! I hope to get caught up tomorrow.

We received a sample to review.

Robin Good and His Not So Merry Men VeggieTales Review

March 5, 2012 by Momstart 11 Comments

By Summer

I love the stories of Robin Hood; sure, the legends retold today expand the actual story of his life. There should be one of those disclaimers on Robin Hood movies “inspired by actual events”! But maybe that’s a stretch considering people know little of Robin of Locksley’s true “rebel life”, which is where his Merry Men come into play. Robin “the good Samaritan” and great archer hide out in the forest, but historians believe there were copycats acting in Robin Hood’s name. Anyways, as you may know cowardly Prince John had taken over England and was taxing people while his brother King Richard the Lionhearted was on crusade to Jerusalem. Well, Veggie Tales takes the name of Robin Hood and changes Robin’s name and story; Robin Hood was known for “stealing from the rich to give to the poor” but Robin Good fundraises in this Veggie Tales feature cartoon …

clip_image002

Bonus Short – Lenny and the Lost Birthday – It is a good little story about being special. My boys were not excited to watch it as they wanted to watch Robin Good. But it was a cute little story about a boy whose family and friends forget his birthday on March 1. Or did they? This little asparagus just wasn’t informed that it was a Leap Year! The Lesson: Remember how much God loves us.

The Silly Song with Larry – Bubble Wrap – When it’s moving day, you must wrap and unwrap! So why not rap about bubble wrap … what kid (or adult) doesn’t love popping those little plastic bubbles?!?

Feature – Robin Good and His Not So Merry Men – Robin Good fundraises for the rich to give to the poor. Prince John has a food tax and is greedy about his pork and won’t share with the citizens of Bethling-HAM. The Merry Men become not so merry and changed their ways from fundraising to stealing from Prince John. SPOILER ALERT: Prince John blames Robin for the missing hams, but when Robin escapes his guards Price John locks up the Sheriff in the dungeon of despair. The Merry Men also get locked up for being caught with the hams. Once Robin saves the Sheriff with a reminder of God’s love and the Merry Men repent, a giant breaks into the kingdom. With no help from cowering Prince John, Robin and the Merry Men save everyone. The Sheriff is declared the guardian of the city until King Richard returns. The Lesson: There is no hurt that is too big for God.

Verse of the Day – Psalm 55:22 – Give your burdens to God, and He will take care of you.

50 minutes long

My Mom Start Review Grade of Veggie Tales Robin Good on DVD: B+

Veggie Tales are worth purchasing. On Seattle TV, I know there used to be a channel that hosted their cartoons, but I can’t find it any more. I love the messages my children get from these Christian values cartoons. I like buying them and having them for at home viewing, but mostly for travel. When we travel our screen time rules go out the door (during the actual travel time in the car or plane), so having episodes is better for us than lots of long, non-educational movies. I enjoyed Robin Good and so did my sons (5YO and 2YO). I hope you like it too! This is a must add to your DVD library.

Robin Good and His Not So Merry Men is coming out Tuesday, March 6! If you want your own copy then preorder from Amazon for only $10.49, a 30% savings.

If you’re a Veggie Tales fan you can connect with them on Facebook.

A Sample was received.

Disney Junior Mickey Mouse ClubHouse Space Adventure Review

November 18, 2011 by Momstart 112 Comments

The star of one of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s newly released movies needs no introduction. He is an icon, the symbol of everything Disney, and the most beloved cartoon character of all time: Mickey Mouse! He has fans throughout the world and of all ages; even my youngest daughter before turning one, wanted her first birthday to be all about Mickey. So if you’ve never heard of Mickey Mouse, then you must be living on Mars!

MMCH_Space_Adventure_DVD_ArtAnd Mars is just where Mickey and his friends are off to in Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s newly released movie Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Space Adventure. This 45 minute, full-length intergalactic adventure takes the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse gang – Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Daisy – into outer space to search for the ultimate space treasure. Geared for kids 2 to 5 years of age, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Space Adventure invites young viewers to discover outer space and use their problem- solving skills while they watch. In this specific adventure, Mickey and pals head to space where they tour the Moon, Mars and the Rings of Saturn as well as meet new alien friends while on the hunt for a unique space treasure.

My daughters couldn’t wait to get the chance to watch this video when it arrived. My youngest daughter, now two and a half, watches Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Disney Channel daily. This movie did not disappoint her one bit. It stays true to the television show’s objective which is intended to help children use specific age-appropriate problem solving skills, such as identifying shapes, counting, and memory in an entertaining way.

My older daughter, the kindergartner, is a huge Disney fan and has enjoyed just about every Disney movie she has seen. Well, maybe not the ones with scary parts, but that wasn’t an issue with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Space Adventure. Space Pirate Pete is the only character up to no good, but before you know it even he becomes friends with the rest of the gang.

Both my daughters loved the special “treats” included with this DVD: a surprise, never-before-seen “Goofy’s Thinking Cap” episode and fun, glow-in-the-dark space-themed stickers! It’s an out-of-this-world package the kids won’t want to miss!

Released November 8, 2011 as a 2-Disc (DVD + Digital Copy) Combo Pack. Available online and at your favorite retail store. Suggested retail price $19.99 U.S./$24.99 Canada.

The Littlest Angel Review

November 16, 2011 by Momstart 54 Comments

The Little Angel by Charles Tazewell has come out on DVD. Anchor Bay revamped this timeless classic just in time for Christmas buyers, but I don’t feel this DVD lives up to what Tazewell had in mind. Half the movie takes place on Earth and is based around The Littlest Angel preforming good deeds and around a circus; both of these areas didn’t seem to fit. I didn’t enjoy the movie, but I hadn’t read the book. After the watching The Littlest Angel I read Tazewell’s book and I really questioned the movie’s added storylines and actually ended up liking the movie less.

clip_image002

This Christmas, angel, “Christian”, heaven movie didn’t work for me because:

The Littles Angel's Gift· Anger in Heaven – The Littlest Angel angers his teacher in heaven. There are other anger scenes in heaven in The Littlest Angel movie. They just don’t fit into heaven for me and don’t really have a place in Tazewell’s original short story. Though the short story includes sadness, which isn’t in heaven; somehow sadness and homesickness are “easier to swallow” than anger and frustration. Though I don’t agree with any of these emotions in heaven.

· Doing Good Deeds – In the movie, all angels have to preform 3 good deeds on Earth as an angel to get their official angel wings. Since good deeds don’t get people into heaven I didn’t think it fit for this angel story. These deeds stray from the Tazewell story and from Christianity.

· Talking Angel Animals – The movie offers The Littlest Angel a sidekick talking dog named Halo. I feel this was added to the movie to give children a fun animal to adore. My thought then is why the creators didn’t also add songs. The dog was another out of place character for me, as were all of the talking animals in the movie.

· Magic of the Halo – All angels seem to have this “super power” of controlling the visibility of their wings and controlling their halo. These props enabled The Littlest Angel to get out of the tight situations he found himself in on Earth retrieving his box.

· Logan, the Dumbest Angel – Why does this movie have to have this character? The one who is big and strong and defined as good looking. The humor wasn’t understood by my children and the teacher angel as snide and mean to him. Simply uncalled for.

Other than these three-fourths of the movie, I liked it. It is strange; all the portions of the movie I liked were the parts that kept true to Tazewell’s story. After not feeling right about the movie I had to hunt down the book at my local library as I wanted to find the similarities and differences to give an objective review. Spoiler Alert: The best part of The Littlest Angel movie is the same as the book, that God chooses the simple box full of simple treasurers from a humble boy from Earth and of man to be a heavenly gift to Jesus on his birth day.
