Driving Routines 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Eco Review

September 25, 2014 by Momstart 1 Comment

Wow, as a mom of two there is a lot of shuffling around all the time. That doesn’t even include the acting and modeling auditions that they need to be shuttled to and from. But it does include dance, and piano and groceries and moms are on the go go go. Chevrolet that it would be a good idea for me to put the fuel-efficient 2014 Cruze Eco to the mom go go go test.

image

Centered by the strong, attention-grabbing grille, its swept-back lamps lead the eye across sculpted fenders, around the sides and back again. And don’t forget that those curves, lines and angles do more than just please the eye and turn heads. They improve aerodynamics; in the end optimizing fuel efficiency† and helping you get the most out every gallon. And I got the most out of every gallon.

The Chevrolet Cruze Eco was dropped off on a Thursday and we drove it in the sun in the rain and to the grocery store and home. We drove to the park and to piano and to dance class. We drove and drove and drove and it was only around town errands that every mom and dad do on a daily basis.

image

It drives very different from my current car. The gas pedal responds differently but I can say that it has some power. This car has go go go juice and the kids liked it. I was really tempted to do circle eights in the church parking lot one day with them but I let my self conscience get the best of me.

imageimage

One draw back is the back seat buckles, the latches don’t pull out at all so the kids had a hard time buckling their seats by themselves and it’s a pain for me to have to help both of them.  At age six and seven I’ve really enjoyed their self reliance when it comes to the car.

image

With advanced aerodynamics and a 1.4L turbocharged engine, it gives you advanced fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance. Cruze Eco delivers 138 horsepower with 148 lb.-ft. of torque and accelerates with authority.

The car has a lot of technology in it.:

With Chevrolet MyLink†, all your favorites are in one place, conveniently displayed on the 7-inch diagonal color touch-screen. You can stream music, get directions, access your personal contacts and more. Just connect your compatible smartphone via Bluetooth® wireless technology† or USB port. Use voice controls, steering wheel controls and the touch screen to access features such as hands-free calling and texting, SirusXM Satellite Radio†, Stitcher™ Smart Radio† and all your own MP3s.

Stay connected to your Cruze with myChevrolet† and OnStar RemoteLink™† mobile apps. Start your vehicle (if equipped)†, check diagnostics, unlock doors, contact roadside assistance, keep track of routine maintenance and more. Available for download from the iTunes Store and Google Play.

RemoteLink Key Fob Services† are a component of the OnStar RemoteLinkTM† app that gives you access to features such as remote start as well as locking and unlocking—even when miles away from your vehicle. This is included for five years after purchase of your 2014 Chevrolet vehicle, with or without a paid OnStar® subscription. With Remote Link Key Fob Services, you can unlock your automatic door locks remotely if your keys are locked inside or in case of an emergency. With factory installed and enabled remote start, you can also remotely start or turn off your car, which is helpful for cooling or heating the inside of your vehicle, and activate your vehicle’s horns and lights to help locate it in a crowded parking lot.

On The Go With Diono!

September 19, 2014 by Heather Heyer Leave a Comment

Diono

The samples used in this review were provided to me by Diono. Opinions are my own.

There are a few things in my life that I have wondered what took me so long to buy. You know what I am talking about. “Why in the world didn’t I get that sooner? It would have made things so much easier!” We all have those. The backseat organizers from Diono are one of those things.

One of the samples I received for MomStart was the Stow’n Go Backseat Organizer by Diono. Who doesn’t need a little organization to the cjaos that goes on in the back seat sometimes, right? The Stow’n Go hangs on the front seat backs and features:

*Waterproof Fabric
*Utility Pockets, Cargo Pockets, Mesh Pouches
*Drink Holders

I hung mine behind the passenger seat so that I could reach it if I needed to. The cord that fastens around the headrest did not work well with the kind of seat that I have. I had to tie it on to fit it securely on. It has fasteners to keep it anchored at the bottom that I wished were adjustable but worked fine.

Travel Pal Car Seat Organizer

Another sample that I received from Diono was the Travel Pal Car Seat Organizer. I love this thing! It is designed to fit between 2 car seats on a bench seat. I don’t have a bench seat so I put this up front on the floor between the 2 seats. Now I have a place to put things so they don’t slide around all over the floor. If you do have a bench seat and are wondering how long it is going to stay on the seat, fear not! The Travel Pal fastens down with Velcro for safety. It has a great storage area that is large enough to put just about anything. The Travel Pal features:

*Large cargo area for storage
*Zippered pockets and cup holders
*Waterproof
*fastens down for safety

All in all, the Stow’n Go and the Travel Pal from Diono are nifty little organizers that make traveling in the car a little bit easier. Thanks Diono!

Introducing The 2015 Hyundai Sonata #NewSonata

July 6, 2014 by Beeb 1 Comment

2015 Hyundai Sonata

Travel and related consideration courtesy Hyundai.

Last week, I flew to Montgomery, Alabama to get an up-close-and-personal look at the new 2015 Hyundai Sonata. And I do mean up close – I had the chance to literally drive this new Sonata off the assembly line at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama plant, and take a driving tour through the Alabama countryside! The Sonata has a ton of interesting features, and it was a lot of fun to drive – these are just a few of the things you’ll find in the 2015 Sonata:

  • More room than any of the comparable vehicles in its market
  • 7 airbags, including knee airbags – as someone with a history of knee issues, I really love the idea of helping protect this important area from impact.
  • Automatic high beams that turn on & off when they sense cars nearby
  • Blind spot detection
  • Lane-change assist
  • Driver position memory on seats, ideal for cars with multiple regular drivers
  • Hands-free smart trunk
  • Smart cruise control – detects when the car in front of you stops so that it can pause and resume appropriately
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Apple® CarPlay – compatible with Siri on iPhone 5 and higher, this works with your smartphone for hands-and-eyes-free voice operation of phone features such as making calls and listening to music
  • Apple® CarPlay

The 2015 Sonata Base model starts at $21,150; other models include the Sonata Eco, which will start at $23,275 (Excluding freight charge), and the turbocharged Sonata Sport 2.0T, which will retail between $28,575-$33,525. I’ll be sharing all my adventures touring the HMMA plant and driving through Alabama in the new Sonata next week, so stay tuned!

Buying Your First SUV: What to Know

April 1, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

IMG_0401

The time to buy your next family vehicle is approaching, and you’re thinking about purchasing an SUV. Owning a sports utility vehicle definitely has its perks, but before you buy, you should learn about SUVs in general so you’re well-armed for the shopping process. Here are some key things you need to know.

Interior Space

Probably one of the first things that come to mind when you think of SUVs is that they’re big. Big, however, falls short of describing your options. SUVs come in compact (crossover), mid-size, and full-size. A compact SUV can comfortably fit at least four adults, whereas a full-size one can hold six or more adults without making them feel like sardines.IMG_0399

Don’t rely on class distinction alone when evaluating the interior space of a vehicle. Some have easy ways to move the back seats to create more room for cargo, along with convenient storage bins for items like snacks and the kids’ iPods. Reading consumer reviews can give you a good idea of the availability and usability of space in a vehicle before you step foot on that dealer lot.

Fuel Efficiency

Active families have errands to run, sports events and dance lessons to attend, and of course work and school. All that driving might make you hesitate to purchase an SUV because larger vehicles are notoriously thirsty for fuel. Indeed, most full-size SUVs top out at about 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

IMG_0402

However, an SUV hybrid can give you all the advantages of an SUV and spare you some pain at the gas pump. A compact SUV hybrid can get you upwards of 30 mpg on the highway, which hits the spot for any family on the go. Plus, going easier on the environment is never a bad thing.

Amenities

Heated seats, an amazing sound system, navigation — how hungry for luxury are you? Depending on your budget, you can buy an SUV that has every gadget, gizmo, and doodad conceivable. Some manufacturers include conveniences like a rear-view camera and blind spot detection standard on at least one of their SUV models. Make a list of the amenities you know you want, but don’t stop there. Some vehicles may come with high-tech features you didn’t even know existed, so do research before you finalize that list.

Power

No one wants a big vehicle that looks like it can tear up the freeway but struggles to climb up a hill. Happily, you won’t come across many underpowered SUVs. Although some compact SUVs have four-cylinder engines, many have at least six cylinders. Full-size SUVs often come equipped with V8s, giving you not only the oomph to rush along any road, but also the ability to tow that boat you’ve had your eye on.

If you go with a hybrid model, you might fear losing out on some of that power. It’s true that gas-powered engines in hybrids are smaller than in their standard counterparts, but howstuffworks.com uncovers that, “On most hybrids, the electric motor can also send power to the wheels alongside the gasoline engine. That translates into plenty of power – in some cases more than comparable standard cars.” The lesson? Test drive before you judge a hybrid as underpowered.

Safety

One of the key things you should know about any SUV before you buy is how safe it is. Many models come with standard features like side curtain airbags and anti-lock brakes. Size by itself is also a safety feature. In a collision, large vehicles fare better and there’s less risk of injury to the occupants. Also, if you choose an SUV with 4WD, you can conquer inclement weather with confidence.

The only downside when it comes to the safety of SUVs is that their bulk cuts back on maneuverability, meaning that they get into accidents that smaller cars could avoid altogether.

SUVs are useful for grocery shopping, moving large items, taking your kid’s soccer team out for ice cream, and a host of other things. When choosing your SUV, consider all the above factors so you can find the vehicle that is just right for you.

My Adventure in The Black Widow Chevrolet Corvette Stingray #CaptainAmericaEvent

March 29, 2014 by Momstart 2 Comments

A few months ago I attended the Chicago Auto show and saw the Black Widow Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and feel in love, now this is the car of adventure. My adventure started first by seeing the car debuted by Chevrolet with a preview for the movie Captain America The Winter Solider. It was surreal and over the top which is how all thing Marvel should be handled.

IMG_0440

Captain America The Winter Soldier explodes into theaters this Friday April 4th.

IMG_0446IMG_0444IMG_0442

The next day at the Chicago Auto Show I actually got to step into the car and play with it. IMG_0748

It’s a hot car right? It’s so trendy I couldn’t even figure out how to open it at first. The handle is not what you expect for a car. It’s hidden almost. And it’s the same from inside the car. Now, after I exited the car someone let a baby drive. Now, I’m not going to name names, but yeah, the baby got in and tried to run me over.

IMG_0752

I think she thought I had her next meal.

IMG_0754

Anywho, we had lots of fun playing with the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, next time I hope I actually get to drive it.

The Time I tried to Steal The 2014 Muppets Toyota Highlander #Noroomforboring #Muppetsmostwantedevent

March 9, 2014 by Momstart 5 Comments

Watching the Muppets on TV in their Toyota Highlander has me going a little crazy. I love the green and how much fun they are having, I just thought to myself, if I have the chance to drive the Muppets Green Toyota Highlander I’m taking it. Well last month when I was at the auto show the car was there. It was right in front of me. So I sneaked right up to it and had to try the door. I looked both ways to make sure no one was watching me and I opened the door and hopped right in. My friends were standing around as if they could keep the guards away from me while I drove off but alas, I was dragged out of the Toyota Highlander and told to keep the film. HA!

image

I really thought with my purple hair they wouldn’t be able to tell that I wasn’t a Muppet!

Well, I came that close you know!

IMG_0480

Toyota is proud to be presenting sponsor of the world premiere of Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted”. The collaboration between Toyota and Disney blends Toyota’s “Let’s Go Places” spirit with Disney’s lovable Muppets franchise. Toyota debuted its 60-second Super Bowl spot starring the Muppets and Terry Crews earlier this year, inspiring families to discover why there’s "No Room for Boring" in the all-new Toyota Highlander.

IMG_0481

The 2014 Toyota Highlander’s roomy interior has enough space to seat up to eight people, or over a dozen Muppets, and will serve as the Muppets’ vehicle of choice as they arrive in style at the movie premiere. A custom Highlander, specially wrapped in true Muppet fashion, will also be featured on the red carpet for photo opportunities. To learn more about the all-new Toyota Highlander, visit www.toyota.com/highlander, #NoRoomForBoring.

The 2015 Nissan Versa Note SR Unique Sporty Styling

February 10, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

At the Chicago Auto show I saw the debut of the sporty new Versa Note SR. The new grade level is one of two new trims being added to the Versa Note lineup for its second year of production, along with the Versa Note SL. Both new grade levels go on sale this spring at Nissan dealers nationwide, joining the Versa Note S MT, S Plus CVT and SV CVT. It’s a nice looking car inside and out.

IMG_0384

Also for the 2015 model year, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System with steering wheel-mounted controls becomes standard across all trims of Versa Note. One new option package is also being introduced for 2015, the SR Convenience Package, and new content is added to the SV Convenience Package and SL Tech Package.

IMG_0385

IMG_0386

Introduced in June 2013, the second-generation of the popular sub-compact 5-door Versa Note offers an exceptional combination of versatility, technology and value. It is designed to satisfy both the owners’ emotional and rational needs with sleek styling and features like the first-in-class Around View® Monitor – all at an affordable price.

The Nissan Versa Note has front and rear crumple zones as well as an advanced airbag system. The Around View® Monitor provides a virtual 360° view around the vehicle which assists in parking – you can literally park the car without looking outside the windows – which means you can see hazards you would miss without it. It’s standard in the SL Tech Package and provides additional selectable split-screen close-ups of the front, rear and curb views.nissan_versa_note_sr_15

Versa Note SR interior enhancements include an exclusive 370Z-inspired leather-wrapped steering wheel, suede-like fabric seats with sporty orange accents and double stitching, a redesigned piano black center instrument panel with silver accents and chrome knobs, and Euro-inspired Fine Vision triple-dial gauge cluster with floating trip computer.

“The new Versa Note SR offers an even more powerful appearance than the other grade levels, blending a sporty, European-style energy with a distinctive, driver-focused cockpit,” said Loing. “It’s a great demonstration that vehicles in this segment can offer sporty style along with attributes such as high utility and fuel economy.”IMG_0372

Under the skin, the Versa Note SR builds on the foundation of the second-generation Versa Note, including an advanced 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine with dual fuel injection and Twin CVTC (Continuously Variable Timing Control) mated to a standard next-generation Nissan Xtronic® transmission. The engine is rated at 109 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 107 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm. EPA fuel economy for the front-wheel drive Versa Note SR is estimated at 40 mpg highway, 31 mpg city and 35 mpg combined.

“The new Versa Note SR and SL grades retain all of the favorite consumer attributes of the Versa Note S, S Plus and SV trim levels – while adding a sportier look and feel in the case of the SR, and more standard technology and convenience items with the SL,” said Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. “Now it’s as easy to find the right combination of equipment in the showroom as it is to enjoy the Versa Note when you take it home.”

The New Kia Soul EV All Electric Debuted at The Chicago Auto Show #FuelCAS @KiA

February 6, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

I’m really interested in the green scene at the auto show. Kia kicked off the Auto Show in style by debuting the new Kia Soul EV, yep it’s all electric and I can’t wait until I get to take it for a test drive. I want to see what power is behind it because Kia has my expectations up.

Soul EV

Set to the sounds of soulful electrified blues music, Kia Motors America (KMA) today hosted the global unveiling of the 2015 Soul EV at the Chicago Auto Show. Scheduled to go on sale in the third quarter of 2014, the Soul EV will be Kia’s first all-electric, zero-emissions car sold in the U.S. and expands the brand’s line of environmentally conscious vehicles. We just purchased an all electric car last year and I LOVE having it. So I’m really excited by the news that Kia now has one because there aren’t that many brands out there that have one that is affordable. The only other two I can think of is Ford and Nissan, it’s time for Kia to put pressure on the other brands to lower their prices right?

IMG_0333

The Soul EV joined the refreshed 2014 Optima Hybrid on stage along with the Niro hybrid concept, illustrating Kia’s intent to lead the industry in providing technologically advanced vehicles that also reduce our dependency on non-renewable resources. Kia’s eco-friendly commitment was further underscored when Underwriters Laboratory (UL) honored the Soul EV with the organization’s first automotive environmental validation for its integration of more than 20 bio-friendly materials.

IMG_0338

“The new Soul EV is at the forefront of Kia’s ‘Clean Mobility’ program and will offer an even more environmentally friendly option to our customers when it goes on sale later this year,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president of product planning, KMA. “The Soul EV retains the fun and funky style as well as the packaging efficiency and utility that have made the gasoline-powered Soul such a huge hit with consumers. And to that winning combination it adds useable real-world range and multiple charging options, making it the perfect EV for everyone.”

The Soul EV will initially be sold in California and Oregon in the West and several Eastern states including New York, New Jersey and Maryland, the regions with the largest EV markets and infrastructure. KMA will look to offer the vehicle in other markets in the near future as infrastructure and demand grow. Pricing for the Soul EV will be announced closer to the vehicle’s launch.

Keep an eye out for more details on the Kia Soul EV.

The Low Price For an Electric Drive: The 2013 Nissan LEAF Review

May 27, 2013 by Momstart 2 Comments

Nissan loaned the 2013 Nissan LEAF to me for one week and this is my experience. IMG_6225

The Nissan LEAF® gets the equivalent of 129 miles per gallon in the city. That’s right, 129 miles per gallon. [*] How does it achieve these remarkable numbers? With a 100% electric drive system powered by an advanced rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and nine range-maximizing features that help you go farther on every charge. Cool right?

I’m a big fan of going all electric which is why I wanted to review the Nissan LEAF. We were looking at buying a LEAF because they have the best price for an electric vehicle. They start at 28,000 and are comfortable to drive in. The seat is adjustable and heated and the steering wheel is also adjustable. The four of us were a snug fit because the kids feet with their booster seats hit right where the front seat passengers sit. My daughter had no room to move when my husband was driving.

IMG_6234

The GPS system worked well and was very easy to use. Charging the car was done in the front of the car and we used our own outlets. I’m the type of person that plugs it in after every drive even if the drive was to the mailbox and back. One of my favorite features, this will sound silly because it’s small when you think about it, was that with the touch of a button you could find every electric charging station in the vicinity. I guess it’s not that small when you suddenly find yourself in need of a charge.

IMG_6226IMG_6230

IMG_6227IMG_6242

When you have ecoboost on the car drives with quite a lag, so when we drove it we left it off most of the time. Other than that driving it was fine. It’s a very light car and made to be aerodynamic. The rims of the wheels allow for maximum air flow and the shape of the body of the car, including the headlights allow for air to pass allowing for less push and pull and giving you maximum amount of miles.

The average American drives less than 29 miles per day. [*] The Nissan LEAF® can get you 75 miles on a single charge. [*] And with advanced technology that adjusts constantly to reflect the changes in your battery charge levels—you’ll always know when it’s time to plug-in.IMG_6221

Features:
  • Includes SV features plus:
  • 17" Aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Quick charge port
  • Automatic on/off LED headlights
  • Fog Lights
  • High response 80 kW AC synchronous electric motor
  • Zero emissions
  • Nissan Intelligent Key® with Push Button Ignition
  • Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System [*]
  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Includes S features plus:
  • Nissan Navigation System [*]
  • CARWINGS® [*]
  • 16" Aluminum-alloy wheels
  • 6.6 kW Onboard Charger
