Borders Teamed up With Build A Bear for a Holly & Hal Moos Charity Drive

November 9, 2010 by Momstart 41 Comments

HH DVD Cover 2010Charity is my passion. I’ve been thinking about this a lot this year, and with the Holiday Season it weighs even heavier on my heart. So I’m happy to support companies that are making donations to charity. Borders is teaming with Build-A-Bear Workshop® for a holiday charity drive to benefit children in need. Now through Dec. 24, customers shopping at Borders stores nationwide will have the opportunity to donate books and stuffed animals, including Hal Moose®, a Build-A-Bear Workshop furry friend with soft brown fur and antlers. Hal Moose is the star of "Holly & Hal Moose™: Our Uplifting Christmas Adventure," a book and DVD available at Borders. Each Borders store will deliver the books and stuffed toys to a local charity.  In addition, Borders will kickoff the holiday charity drive by promising to donate $50,000 to First Book, which provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy — access to books.

The book retails at $15.99 and the DVD at $14.99. They’re from the Build-A-Bear collection (BAB is a Borders partner).

Borders Premium Membership and Kobo eReader Giveaway

October 2, 2010 by Momstart 690 Comments

Borders is a fun place to go for more than just books. They have story time, author book signings, and toys. One thing that is nice, is if you are shopping for the kids in the kids section they have a set of toys the kids can entertain themselves. I also love to get a cup of Seattle’s Best Coffee when I’m in there. Between those two wonderful parts of Borders Book Store I could lose track of time in there. I love looking at children’s books and cookbooks and my husband loves looking at science fiction. We used to look through the book store after having dinner out at the mall. Now that we have kids though, time just seems to get away from us much faster.

You know I love to save money and use any points programs that I can so we love to sign up for Memberships, even when we have to pay for them. Last time I was at Borders shopping for books and rainy day activities for the kids I signed up for the free rewards program. I at the time didn’t understand the difference between the free rewards program and their “Borders Rewards Plus” program, which for $20 per year delivers savings on nearly all Borders merchandise, and free shipping on virtually all online orders. Speaking of on-line orders, did you know that Borders has their own ereader? The Borders Kobo eReader is priced at 129.99. It is lightweight and compact, and comes preloaded with 100 classic books.

rewardsBorders Rewards Benefits:

Both forms offer a rich array of benefits and savings, such as exclusive in-store and online discounts which I love, personal shopping days, free Seattle’s Best coffee, a free birthday gift, and Borders Bucks. In addition to all of those wonderful benefits:

· Members of the free, enhanced program receive 30 percent off the list price of hardcover bestsellers and free shipping on online orders of $25 or more.

· Members of the Borders Rewards Plus program receive 40 percent off the list price of hardcover bestsellers, 20 percent off the list price of select hardcovers, 10 percent off the purchase price of most everything else — and free shipping on all online orders.

Be sure to follow Borders on Twitter and like Borders on Facebook.

Here is the last tip from HarperCollins:

Summer is a great time to be outdoors. Why not take a Friday or Saturday night and camp out under the stars – in your own backyard! Use this opportunity to unplug from TV, computers and other distractions and connect as a family by sharing some of your own childhood favorite books with your own kids by camp light.

Borders and HarperCollins teamed to provided me a Borders gift card in exchange for my posts about the Double-Dog Dare Summer Reading Challenge. It does not affect the fact that I believe in reading to my kids.

Summer Reading Tip Number 3

June 25, 2010 by Momstart 3 Comments

doubledog_thumb You know I’m giving away 2 100.00 Gift Cards to Borders away right? Thanks to Borders’ Summer Reading challenge. They are Double Dog Daring you to encourage your kids to read all summer long. By reading 10 books, you and your child can receive a free book.

Double Dog Dare Summer Reading Program asks you to fill out the Reading Participation Form and run in to borders and pick out a book from their list of free books. To help you get your children reading we (Borders and I) are providing tips every week. Two weeks ago the tip was from Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot and Knucklehead: Tall Tales and Almost True Stories of Growing up Scieszka. Last week you had me and HarperCollins giving you reading tips.

This week the tip is from HarperCollins:

A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds.  After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon.  Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later!

Here are a few tips:

· Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie

· Let them design what the scenery would look like

· Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why

· And have fun!

Reading has taken off with both of my children lately. My husband and I have been reading to the kids every night and now Miles will say, “read a book Mommy, read me a book” as soon as the covers are over him. Today I was taking a nap on the couch during nap time and Zoe brought a book with her when she got up from her nap and said, “Read me a story momma”. So of course as soon as my eyes adjusted to the lights on, I read her a story. I know how important reading is so I’m trying really hard to encourage reading in my house. I hope that you do to in your own house.

Borders Summer Reading Challenge Giveaway

June 11, 2010 by Momstart 1,157 Comments

doubledogI have always had a love for reading and I think it had to do with my dad. He read to me every night before we said our prayers. Then as our family grew, he read to all of us. It was amazing that no matter how tired he was he always did this with us until we were old enough to read on our own. Then we went to bed and read on our own, I came to love reading so much that I always had a book in my hands, I love to read on the bus, in the bath tub and sometimes while I’m walking. My husband reads and walks too!

Now that we have kids of our own we’re trying to encourage that love of reading in them. We seem to have it easy so far, which makes me think that kids follow by example. At least our kids do, and I’m not naive I understand that it could change any day now.

Borders wants to encourage reading by giving away free books. Double Dog Dare Summer Reading Program at Borders is going on now. Read 10 books, fill out the Reading Participation Form and run in to borders and pick out a book from their list of free books.

To help you get your children reading we are providing tips every week. Last weeks tip was from Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot and Knucklehead: Tall Tales and Almost True Stories of Growing up Scieszka. This week you have me and HarperCollins.

Tips From Me:

Be an example to your children, read your own books in front of them.

Read out loud to your kids often, at least one book a day.

Tip From HarperCollins:

“Encourage your children to read books about people and who are different from them. In fact, Katherine Paterson, recently named National Ambassador for Children’s Literature by the Library Of Congress and author of many award-winning books for children, including Bridge to Terabithia says, “I began reading on my own very early because I knew the magic that books held, and when I came to the United States and was regarded as alien by my classmates, books provided me with friends who helped me to understand myself and to have compassion for other people. So I urge everyone to read for your life–for enjoyment and knowledge and as a member of a family and a citizen not only of your community but of the world.”

Reading Tips:

I will be sharing a reading tip every week for four weeks. Here is the first reading tip from Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot and Knucklehead: Tall Tales and Almost True Stories of Growing up Scieszka

“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”

Get everything you need for Christmas in one stop at Borders New Toy Department 100.00 #giveaway

November 17, 2009 by Momstart 886 Comments

IMG_0147

As part of a new blogger program, Borders gave me 100.00 to spend in their store. I was overwhelmed by the kindness the manager showed me. I showed up expecting them to already know I was coming and my lifeline known as my phone was accidentally left at home. So when I showed up and they looked at me like I was crazy, the manager let me use one of their computers to get on the internet. I was able to find the contact information of the PR rep that set everything up for me. We called her and everything was taken care of in seconds.

Huge thanks to the manager of the Redmond Borders; because if she had told me no, I would have either had to go all the way home or to the library to print off the information I needed. I didn’t tell my husband this story because he would have laughed at me for not taking all the information with me in a hard printed out copy.

IMG_0148 You know, it’s hard enough to get out of the house with the kids, diapers, snacks, wallet, without forgetting my brain.

My husband’s gift was the easiest. I knew exactly what I wanted to get him and I”m not going to post it on the off chance that he takes a look at this post. He said he wants to be good since it’s his only present.

I spent the rest on the kids even though, I could have picked up a few things for other family members. I’m trying to go though my family members and make sure I have what each one needs.

IMG_0149Sister 1 Movies

Sister 2 Movie Theater Gift Card

Sister 3 Husband took care of it (she does read my blog so I can’t say)

Mom and Dad 1 – gave them a laptop (so they don’t get anything else, maybe a photo book)

Mom and Dad 2 – photo book,

The kids were hard because there was so much to choose from at Borders. The above photos are what you might expect before they added an entirely new toy department.

IMG_0150

With about four aisles of toys to choose from Borders has become a toy boutique. The employees upstairs were not quite as helpful as the manager and the cashiers. I really could have used some help carrying my load downstairs to the only register. I feel like if I had been at a boutique that they would have carried all of my stuff to the register for me. It was hard to corral my kids, with my arms full, but other than that the experience was great. I mean the price difference makes carrying my own toys to the register worth the struggle.

IMG_0152 In addition to so many name brand toys and books to choose from (all of them being learning and education aids for all ages) They have a table set up where kids can read and on the other side of the tower there was a play table for children. That is a lifeline to a mom that has to do her shopping with her children with her.

Many of the items I purchased were on sale. They had buy one get one half off of all Melissa and Doug items and their clearance was buy two get one free. So I was even more attracted to their clearance than all of the new toys they had. I came home with quite a hall of goodies. Knowing me, we’ll donate half of it. We’re going to have to empty out my closet before my surgery and figure out what is getting donated and what is going under the Christmas tree. Christmas might be upstairs in my bed this year. 😉

Borders was kind enough to not only pay for my shopping experience but they want to provide one for two of my readers.
