December 8, 2015 by Beeb Leave a Comment

Bob shows off the new Just Right by Purina packaging

Product provided.

Bob’s favorite food, Just Right by Purina, just got even better. In addition to being a completely customized blend of food created specifically for Bob’s unique tastes and nutritional needs, the dog food bag is also sweetly personalized. With new and improved packaging that was just debuted, Bob’s photo is now prominently and proudly displayed on the bag along with his name and personal notes to our family. We did a live unboxing of the brand new packaging on Periscope last night, and Bob was so excited:

Have you tried Just Right by Purina for your pets? What do you think of the new packaging?

DIY Halloween Treat Jar For Dogs

October 20, 2015 by Beeb 10 Comments

DIY Halloween Treat Jar For Dogs

This is a partnered post.

Halloween is coming up fast, which means it’s time to stock your cupboards with candy and plot your costume! And if you have a pet, you’re probably thinking about a fun costume for them, too; a recent survey from Big Heart Pet Brands found that 44% of pet owners in New York alone have dressed their dog in a Halloween costume, with 38% of them greeting trick-or-treaters at the door with their pooch. So with that in mind, I wanted to share this fun (and simple!) craft idea for making a spooky Halloween treat jar for your own dog to “Trick or treat” from!

How to Make a DIY Halloween Treat Jar For Your Dog

You’ll need:

Round biscuit cutter
Ruler
Black felt tip pen
Orange felt tip pen
Pencil
Tape
Scissors
Orange and green construction paper
Mason jar
Yarn

Directions:

Trace the biscuit cutter with your pencil over the orange sheet of paper and cut out the circle with the scissors.

Use your ruler to trace and cut a triangle out of the green construction paper, like so:

Cutting the construction paper

Tape the triangle onto the back of the orange circle, then draw a pumpkin face on it with the black pen. Tape it to the side of the jar.

Pumpkin decoration on the jar

Trace another circle on the green sheet of paper using the biscuit cutter, and cut it out. Use the orange pen to write on it – I wrote “Bob’s Treats” on mine for our Labrador! Tape it onto the jar on the opposite side from the pumpkin.

Bob's treats

Tie yarn around the top of the jar for a decorative touch, then fill with your favorite doggy treats! We love Milk-Bone snacks – a bone-shaped biscuit is too perfect for Halloween! Also perfect for All Hallow’s Eve is the special limited edition “Howl-O-Ween” package of Pup-Peroni. I rounded out the jar with Canine Carry-Outs and Milo’s Kitchen – so there’s no tricks here, just yummy treats!

Bob says "Trick or Treat"!

Bob was so excited about his special Halloween treat jar! He’s already donning his pumpkin bandanna to get into the spirit. Doesn’t he look boo-tiful?

Bob's Halloween costume

Our family will be among just a few of the many proud dog lovers celebrating this Halloween with man’s best friend. Check out more fun facts from the “Halloween Hounds” survey of over 3,000 dog owners:

Tricks For Treats

Because dogs are the ultimate tricksters, Milo’s Kitchen brand dog treats wanted to uncover, for the first time, which tricks dogs are best able to perform. The nation’s most popular doggy tricks are:

#1: Sit (77% of dogs can do this on command)
#2: Shake paws (58%)
#3: Lay down (57%)
#4: Stay (50%)
#5: Give a kiss (44%)
#6: Beg (31%)
#7: Roll over (27%)
#8: Speak or bark (26%)
#9: Spin (14%)
#10: Play dead (10%)

Different Treats For Different Breeds

  • Big dogs like Dobermans and Great Danes prefer “real meat treats”, while most small ones (Pomeranians and Pugs) choose “soft and chewy” snacks – like Pup-Peroni
  • Soft and chewy treats are also the all-time favorites of terriers (58%), and toy dogs (59%)
  • Biscuits and crunchy treats (like Milk-Bone) are the clear favorites of hounds (53%), herding dogs (56%), and sporting dogs (57%)

Getting Into The Halloween Spirit: State-by-State

  • 44% of NY pet parents have dressed their dog in costume versus 28% of California pet parents
  • 38% of NY pet parents have greeted trick-or-treaters with their dog while 18% of pet parents in California have
  • 18% of Texas pet parents have given their dog extra treats for Halloween and 16% have taken their dog trick-or-treating.

Just Right by Purina: Customized Dog Food

October 16, 2015 by Beeb 6 Comments

Just Right by Purina

Product provided.

Every person has different tastes and their own unique dietary needs. We may not think about it as much, but our furry friends also have their own preferences and dietary considerations. That’s why I was fascinated to learn about Just Right by Purina, a brand new service where you can customize a blend of dog food made specifically for your dog and your dog alone.

Here’s how it works: You visit the Just Right by Purina website and answer a simple questionnaire. You pick your desired ingredients and answer questions about things like your dog’s breed and activity level. Then, you can customize the blend with your doggie’s name and photo, and have it shipped straight to your door. We thought this sounded like a perfect option for the family dog, Bob, so we showed Grandma the website so she could pick exactly what Bob would get.

Just Right by Purina website

It was fast and simple to set up the order, and Grandma was able to pick Bob’s favorite meat (Lamb!) and select a grain-free option perfect for his dietary needs. In just a few minutes, Bob’s Blend was born!

The fact that we could customize this exactly to what Bob needs in his diet was great enough, but the fact that it also gets shipped straight to you door was an extra sweetener. Dog food is heavy, and Grandma usually needs help bringing those heavy bags inside from the car after she goes shopping. What a great option to make life easier – and you don’t ever have to worry about running out or dashing to the store!

So how did Bob like his very own, tailor-made blend of dog food? Well, this is a true story: As I was quite literally sitting here in the middle of writing this post, the mail arrived. I was surprised to see a card from Grandma. I opened it and read the most beautiful thank-you card telling me all about how Bob was loving his food. That wasn’t timed or planned – talk about serendipity! So, I’d like to share part of what she said in the card, because it tells you exactly what Bob thinks:

He loves it and I think he feels more satisfied. He was always so hungry! The bags with his picture on them are so special! The rest of the family has enjoyed them too. Bob seems more calm now too.”

I’ll be sharing more of our experience with Just Right by Purina over the coming months, along with expert tips and information, so stay tuned!

Help Your Pets Adjust to a New Schedule: 5 Tips

September 10, 2015 by Beeb 13 Comments

Roxy

This is a partnered post.

Bob the family dog has been going through some separation anxiety recently. The family was gone for a few hours for a family reunion one afternoon this summer, and although another family member was doggy-sitting, Grandma says she has noticed him behaving more anxiously since then. He also hasn’t been able to spend as much time with his buddy Roxy, so he’s missing her too.

Separation anxiety in dogs is very common, and it increases this time of year. Did you know that the back-to-school season is actually a big cause of stress for pets? After spending all summer playing with the kids, suddenly the family dog or cat finds themselves in a much emptier house come Fall.

Luckily, Purina Vet Dr. Kurt Venator is here to help! MomStart recently got to participate in a Google Hangout with Dr. Venator where he shared 5 tips for helping your furry friends adjust to a new back-to-school routine:

5 Tips to Address Separation Anxiety in Pets

1. Get Your Pet Into a Routine

Just like kids have to adjust to a new schedule after school starts, so do your pets. Help them feel secure by establishing a routine they can rely on – try to make a specific time each day where you stop to play with your pet, and keep to a consistent schedule.

2. Burn Off Some Energy

If your pet expresses their anxiety by becoming destructive, help them channel some of that energy more constructively. If you own a dog, try taking them for a walk every morning, and if you have a cat, try playing with them using balls or other cat toys.

3. Create an Interactive Environment

Get your pet an interactive toy to keep them occupied while the kids are at school. Chew toys are a great pick for dogs, while cats love scratching posts or other kitty furniture.

4. Turn up The Tunes & Start With Baby Steps

Much like a white noise machine can help anxious humans tune out sounds at night, playing some soothing music for your pet while the family is gone can help them relax and avoid getting excited over sounds that they may hear and mistake for your children returning from school. Dr. Venator also recommends getting your pet used to sounds that they associate with you leaving, such as doors closing or keys jingling, so that they will become less anxious when they hear these sounds.

5. Spend Time With Your Pet

Although you’re probably burnt out when you get home from work, remember that your furry friend may have been waiting for you at home feeling lonely. Like any other member of the family, make sure you’re taking quality time with your pet each day, whether it’s cuddling, throwing a ball or going for a walk around the block.

Wrapping up The Dog Days of Summer With Wellness TruFood #TruLoveIs

August 31, 2015 by Beeb 5 Comments

This is a partnered post.

Summer is leaving as quickly as it got here, with kids getting ready to head back to school even though it seems like their break just started. Fall signifies going back to routines for the whole family – and when the “Dog days” of summer are over, you want to make sure your pooch is on a regular schedule, too! Dogs thrive on familiarity, so keeping a routine time for walks, bedtime and feeding keeps everybody happy.

And just like you pack your child’s lunchbox with nutritious food, make sure that your pup’s afternoon “Lunch bowl” is equally healthy! Quality food makes a difference – just ask Bob and Roxy. Our family dogs started eating Wellness Trufood a few months ago, and we were really impressed with how much of a change it’s made.

Bag of Wellness TruFood

Roxy had been getting a mystery rash, and after she had been eating Wellness Trufood for a while, the rash cleared up and we realized it had been caused by the food she’d been eating previously. It’s also easy on her sensitive tummy and doesn’t make her ill as some foods do. That’s no accident: Wellness TruFood is free from grain, wheat, and potatoes, and is designed with the goal of promoting better digestion by including things like probiotics and ginger in their recipes. TruFood has 70% more raw protein than your typical dry dog food, and is packed with fruits and veggies to make the best possible blend.

And it’s not just Roxy benefiting: Bob’s coat is also looking shinier! If your pups are having issues, it’s a good idea to talk to your veterinarian and ask them if a change of diet could help.
Both Bob and Roxy love the taste and eat their Wellness Trufood as if it were a special doggy treat, and not their average meal. As any parent knows, a child is not as likely to eat their healthy school lunch if it doesn’t also taste good, and the same goes for a pet’s lunchbox!

The end of summer is also a fun time for our family, as August marks a slew of family reunions and birthdays. My cousin had a combination housewarming/birthday party a couple of weeks back, and when I wrapped her present, I also wrapped one for Roxy. You see, Roxy loves opening presents, so we like to wrap a present just for Roxy whenever there are gifts being opened, so that she can join the fun! And I had just the perfect thing: A bag of Wellness Trufood!

I wrapped up Roxy’s gift in some fun paper and presented it to her for opening:

Roxy opens her present

Lemme at that gift!

Roxy licks her lips when she sees Wellness TruFood!

Not only did Roxy have fun tearing up the paper, but she was excited to stick her head in the bag and get a little nibble – talk about the gift that keeps on giving!

Food time!

Om nom nom

Did you do anything fun with your furry friends this summer? Are they getting back into a routine now with Fall approaching?

Summertime, And The Living is – Ezy Dog!

July 9, 2015 by Beeb 2 Comments

Bob going for a walk

Sample provided

Like all dogs, Bob loves going for walks! However, he’s such a big boy that we’ve found leashes to be a bit of an issue. For example, one day Jai was walking Bob, and the loveable lab got so excited about something he saw that he actually bent the collar’s clasp, which caused it to come off of him. That’s not supposed to happen! Luckily, nothing bad happened because Bob is a good boy and didn’t run off, but it could have been disastrous.

Bob tries on his Ezy Dog Chest Plate Harness

That’s why we took Ezy Dog up on their offer to send over one of their chest plate harnesses. There were two features that stood out to us about this: First of all, it wraps around the body, making it Houdini-proof for rambunctious pooches that want to pull a disappearing act. Second, it includes a car restraint attachment, which sounded like a great thing for days when Bob wants to ride in the car.

Bob strikes a pose

The thing that was tricky about this harness is the fact that Bob is so big. It did fit on him just perfectly when it was at its absolute max around his chest; because you can’t put it on while it is loose and then tighten it up, we found that you had to get it just right the first time putting it on, so it took a little more time to get set up initially. If you have a very big dog, just size the chest harness out to its maximum, and snap it on a little far forward on the dog and then it will slip into place.

Chest Plate Harness closeup

Once Bob got used to it, he seemed to like it.He had a bit of a stiff posture as he got used to it, but he didn’t have a problem with it. Jai thinks this will make walksies more comfortable for everyone, and we’re also liking the handy seat belt attachment. The Ezy Dog Chest Plate Harness retails for $25 and is the perfect thing for enjoying summer days with your dog!

TruFood For a True Blue Pal! #TruLoveIs

June 29, 2015 by Beeb 7 Comments

Bob & Roxy Get Ready to Try Wellness TruFood

I am a Wellness TruFood Brand Ambassador.

Furry friends enrich our lives in so many ways. Our family’s resident dogs, Bob and Roxy, are a source of companionship, joy, and hilarity – watching Bob the giant Labrador play with Roxy, the tiny Boston Terrier, cracks us all up! They have such distinct personalities and are an important part of the family…in fact, we’re pretty sure that Bob thinks he’s a human!

Because dogs show us so much love, we try to show love right back by taking good care of them. In the past year or so, Bob’s vet recommended a grain-free diet, so we’ve been taking a lot of care to find yummy food that fits that bill. I thought that Wellness TruFood fit the bill because it’s not only free from grains, but also contains wholesome ingredients like Chicken, Chicken Liver and Flaxseed as well as air-dried fruits and veggies.

Wellness TruFood

When I received my first bag of Wellness TruFood, I placed it underneath the apple tree in the back yard to snap a few photos. I’ll have you know that this is actually Bob’s apple tree! Pretty fitting, considering that this dog food recipe also includes real apples!

Bob and Roxy try to open the bag!

As soon as I put the bag down, Bob and Roxy ran over and tried to chew their way into it! So, I figured this would be as good a time as any for a taste test. We opened up the bag and poured out a little bowl for each of them, and they could not get enough! Bob, being sneaky as ever, stuck his face directly into the bag when he thought we weren’t paying attention and started eating directly out of it as though it were a feedbag! Meanwhile, Roxy tried to sneak a bite out of Bob’s bowl while he was distracted. These two are a hoot and they most definitely loved their new dinner!

Roxy Says Yum!

Since starting our Wellness TruFood experience, the family has been noticing how well the pups are responding to their new food. They are both eagerly anticipating mealtime, and Bob’s coat is looking very nice. Roxy has gotten tummy troubles in the past with different dog foods, but not only has she been loving her new nibbles, but she has actually stopped passing gas now that she’s eating Wellness TruFood! I guess that’s the “Tru” difference that TruFood can make!

Stay tuned for more of Bob & Roxy’s adventures!

Give Your Dog a Holiday Feast!

December 22, 2014 by Beeb 17 Comments

A Holiday Feast

Samples provided.

The holidays are a time of year that we closely associate with special food. So don’t leave Fido out of the fun! Today I’m suggesting several delicious doggie food brands perfect for giving your dog a Christmas dinner to remember:

Caru treats

Caru stew

Caru Stew & Treats: Grandma has been putting a little bit of this beef stew on her dog Bob’s dry food every night for a little yummy something extra. Bob loves it, and it he also loves getting their treats to chew on!

Bravo

Bravo Pet Foods: This one is really unique because it’s a freeze-dried pet food that you add water to. The mix itself looks like turkey stuffing, which is so fitting for a true holiday doggie feast! When I mixed this up with 1 cup of water as directed, I noticed that the consistency was very watery – we ended up having to pour off some of the water. Maybe I measured it wrong, although I checked the package several times. It was very different than any dog food I’ve prepared before, but Bob seemed to enjoy this as a topping on his regular dry food as he followed me so he could lick the spoon I stirred it with, so it went over well, anyway! 😉

Spring Naturals

Spring Naturals: These beefy chews were a bit hit with Bob!

Look Who's Happy

Look Who’s Happy: Bob enjoyed these too, but you don’t have to take my word for it – watch him take his first bite on camera in my video review:

3 MomStart readers will win one of each treat featured in this post!

I and love and you: Bob’s Verdict #furreal

December 10, 2014 by Beeb 9 Comments

I and love and you treats

Product provided.

It’s been a month since I introduced you to I and love and you, a line of dog foods made with a high level of attention to quality and sustainability. I figured that Bob, Grandma’s Labrador, would probably like it OK. But I wasn’t expecting the reaction that I got!

When I first brought the food over, Grandma had just opened a new bag of her former brand, so she was going to use that up and transition Bob over. Well, just a few days later, she told me that Bob was LOVING his new food. “But I thought you were going to use the old stuff up first?” Well, as it turns out, a few dry bits of kibble from the I and love and you shipment had dropped onto the floor, and after Bob had just that small taste, he refused to eat his old food! He only wanted I and love and you – in fact, Grandma had to mix I and love and you in with his old food to get him to eat it so she could use up the old stuff and get rid of it!

Bob enjoying an I and love and you treat

Yes, Bob strongly prefers I and love and you to any other dog food – and in fact, when Grandma served him his old brand of dry kibble for dinner before, she would usually have to spoon some wet food on top or add and egg or a little meat in order for him to eat it. But using I and love and you, all she needs is just the kibble and he eats it right up! It’s also grain free, which is really important, because Bob’s vet just recommended that he switch to grain-free foods.

Bob drooling over I and love and you

Aside from the dry and canned food, Bob also adores I and love and you doggie treats – the first time we gave him one, he ran off into a corner drooling and chewed on it, totally in rapture! But you don’t have to take my word for it – why don’t you see what Bob does when I give him one on camera?

My apologies for the loud rain the background – we’re having a huge storm here in Seaside this week! 😉

Grandma LOVES everything about this food, from the adorable heart-shaped kibble to how good it is for Bob and how good Bob thinks it is! She expressed worry that she wouldn’t be able to find the food around here – we don’t have a lot of stores to choose from – and when I told her it is available at Fred Meyer she was so happy! Grandma is very loyal to quality products and wants the very best for Bob, so they have gained themselves a new customer and big fan. I’m really impressed, and honestly really surprised! I had no idea that a new brand of dog food could make such an impression!

I and love and you
