BBC America presents Emma mini-series on DVD #giveaway

February 1, 2010 by Momstart 269 Comments

I have never read a single Jane Austen book, the closest I’ve come to her was watching Clueless, and I had no idea that it was based upon the book Emma. I watched the movie Becoming Jane on Netflix one night and decided that I wanted to read her books, but I never did find the time. But then Warner Brothers introduced me to Emma, by BBC America. Emma is based upon the book by Jane Austen, and after watching the show, I finally decided to read the book. So far, I find the book a little bit difficult to read because the language is so old, so I really like the show because they updated the language a bit. Everyone is still proper and in or out of society but it’s much easier to follow.

To be Released on: 2/9

emma USA snapbox:USSynopsis: Fresh and funny, this new adaptation of the Jane Austen classic features a stellar cast  including Romola Garai (Atonement, Vanity Fair), Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting) and Michael Gambon (Harry Potter).

21-year-old Emma Woodhouse has very little to worry about.  She is beautiful, clever, rich, with a comfortable home and some of the best blessings of existence.  More than anything, she loves playing matchmaker to her friends and family, so when young, pretty, naive and socially inferior Harriet arrives, Emma decides to indulge her passion.  She persuades Harriet to reject an advantageous marriage proposal from a local farmer in order to hold out for an offer from the dashing Mr. Elton. But Emma soon discovers that Mr. Elton is far more socially ambitious and mercenary than she had ever realized, and her advice to Harriet goes terribly awry.

Actors: Starring Romola Garai (Atonement, Vanity Fair), Louise Dylan (Merlin), Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting), Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, Cranford), Rupert Evans, Jodhi May, Robert Bathurst

My Opinion:

WOW, how I loved watching this. I had a hard time not watching it all in one night. When I realized I had two episodes left I had to stop and continue watching it the next night. I see now how Clueless is the same story, but it lacks so much of what Emma has. Emma was never troubled until her governess went off and got married. (which was by Emma’s own accord). It was then when she realized that she should become a match maker. Then all the trouble starts for her. I hope I am not the only woman out there that has not read the novel by Jane Austen.

Michael Gambon is amazing in this, I say amazing because he truly resembles a doting father afraid to lose his last daughter. He also seems to see much more than he lets on. I have no idea if this is the case in the book because I haven’t gotten that far yet but I’m really looking forward to reading the character development of him and the amazing Mr. Knightly. I love the Mr. Knightly is always able to tell Emma the truth. Everyone needs to be brought back to reality every now and then don’t you think?

I find through the show that Emma has such an innocence about her. Even though she is trying to match up her new best friend, she doesn’t seem to have any idea when a guy is actually in love. It is by the end of the show that she realizes to see love, you must know love.

BBC America presents Cranford and Return to Cranford #giveaway

February 1, 2010 by Momstart 229 Comments

Last week I spent the evenings with my husband watching Cranford and Return to Cranford. One night I started the DVD without him and he made me restart it so he didn’t miss anything. It was educational to him, because it was all about the lives of women he learned a little bit about the relationship and needed dynamics of women. They are the same today was they were in 19th-century. Women gossip, cry and laugh together. Cranford is based on the stories written by Elizabeth Gaskell.

1000120869DVDFLT Cranford Collection Synopsis: Oscar©-winner Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal, Casino Royale) heads a stellar cast including Michael Gambon (Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films), Eileen Atkins (Cold Mountain, Gosford Park), Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) and more in this witty and poignant story which follows the small absurdities and major tragedies in the lives of the people of Cranford. Cranford in the 1840s is on the cusp of change. The railway is pushing its way relentlessly towards the town, bringing fears of migrant workers and the breakdown of law and order. The arrival of Frank Harrison, a handsome new doctor from London, causes a stir, not only because of his revolutionary medical methods, but also because of the effect he has on many female hearts in the town.

CRANFORD_USA_2-SNAPTRAY-FINAL.indd Return to Cranford Synopsis: Judi Dench, Imelda Staunton, Francesca Annis and Julia McKenzie star in this two-part sequel to the Emmy-winning BBC/PBS drama, Cranford. Miss Matty’s house is full of life and bustle. Her dream of having a child in the house has been realized in the birth of Tilly, daughter of her maid Martha and carpenter Jem. Elsewhere, the shadow of the railway still looms, but the line has been halted five miles outside of Cranford – a disaster as far as Captain Brown is concerned

My Opinion:

Cranford is a great TV series that brings tears of laughter and sadness. There are so many hardships in the time period of Cranford. People are poor, homeless, and un-educated. There are those that are educated but even women that are educated are seen as only a commodity and not useful except for trade. Cranford is made up mostly of older families so many or the women are either old spinsters or widows. They all follow the rules of etiquette that the times present them with, but they also abandon all society has taught them to support each other. In the first part of Cranford we are introduced to the two sisters that seem to be the center of the town, at least, everyone follows Miss Jenkyns. So when the news of the railroad sends her into a heart attack, (that’s my guess as to what happens) everyone is distraught and thus hates the railroad and it’s coming. No one wants to accept change in Cranford.

With the loss of her sister, Miss Matty goes though many different trials as she steps into the role of being the women in town to lead all the other women. Among those challenges are the loss of her housekeeper (she died trying to give birth to her second child) and the loss of all her money when her bank went under. She grows and becomes the strong women she always saw in her sister. As the town fights over the coming of the train, Miss Matty finally realizes how important and wonderful change can be. The town can grow and families can be reunited. You need to watch it to completely understand. I would say that this is completely a chick flick but, my husband watched every episode with me. He laughed a lot too, he found the women to be hilarious, well, the men were pretty funny too. The young doctor in town was very kind to all the women and apparently any attention from a man meant you were to be engaged. Oh, the poor doctor.

You can win the entire collection.

Another Last minute Gift Idea BBC TV Favorites Holiday #Giveaway

December 21, 2009 by Momstart 915 Comments

I’ve been watching BBC show since I was in high school. One guy that I really liked loved The Black Adder and I watched tons of it just to spend time with him. I kept hoping that I would become more than just one of the guys, but alas, all I gained was an appreciation for British comedy. Everything works out in the end.

Over the years I grew a much fonder appreciation for their Science Fiction, as we watched Doctor Who. I fell in love with the ninth doctor, Christopher Eccleston, and was quite upset when he regenerated into David Tennant. But over time I was won over and never wanted him to leave. So yes, I’m upset again as he’s about to change over into a new doctor. I had to negotiate with BBC America Shop to get the next chapter for myself. So that’s what I get for hosting this giveaway. I haven’t received it yet so I can’t write a review but I don’t want to ruin it for anyone either.

But this post is not just about Doctor Who and all of the spinoffs that I also watch. It’s more about BBC America Shop and what you can purchase there. BBC America Shop sells products for the house, jewelry, apparel, books and DVD’s. Here are a few DVD ideas:
