Much Deserved Mommy Time Nook Color Giveaway

December 30, 2010 by Momstart 3,987 Comments

Much Needed Mommy TimeAddicted is one word I would use to describe myself. Addicted to reading Twilight. Not just the first book either, but all four books. I read Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn over and over. I’m on round five or six, I’ve actually lost track. These are very big books, and if I had to hold the book, my hands would ache. I have arthritis, but I love to read. There were a few years that I would only read for about 15 minutes at most before going to bed because my hands would start hurting.

Then, came the e-books.

Now, I can read the books over and over again, finish one of the books and jump directly into the next book. Someone has to actually remind me to go to sleep.

Which brings me to what would be my favorite mommy time kind of day?

Nook Color PackagingI would love to spend the day reading and not too long ago I did. I decided to take a break from my twilight obsession and I downloaded a new book (new to me at least). I downloaded Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins it took me about a week to read the first book then the second two, Catching Fire, and MockingJay I read in 3 days. I could not put my reader down, not even during the day. I sat on the couch with my ereader in hand and read for hours. I even like to read in the bath tub (but that’s just between us ok?)

The Barns & Noble Nook Color is an amazing way to spend your mommy time. Sit down, read a book, read a magazine, read a news paper, read a website or blog post. I mean, I love the way my blog looks on the nook color. The Barnes and Nobel Nook Color makes websites look more crisp and clearer then the iPad does.

But perhaps you might think of letting the kids play with it and you do something you really want to do. The kids story books are easy enough for the kids to do on their own. Check out Zoe and Miles in this video using the nook! Now this video is not the best quality. I had some lighting issues and a 2 and 3 year old that wanted their turn in the spotlight. So watch and enjoy!

Other Nook Color Features:

I love listening to Pandora
I love playing sodoku or the crossword puzzles
I love the color touch screen and that it remembers my place if I put the book down for a while
I love that I can share my reading experience from the Nook Color over social media such as twitter and facebook.

Barnes and Noble – Exploring The Nook Giveaway

March 17, 2010 by Momstart 2,570 Comments

Last year Barnes and Noble introduced The Nook. I’ve been using the Kindle 2 until my husband took it away from me because his broke. (ok, he didn’t take it, I gave it to him because he has trouble falling asleep and reading helps him.) We switched to a digital reader because my husband goes through books like the wind blows and he doesn’t like the library. He’s a little weird, so overall, it’s cheaper for us to use a digital reader. It’s also a lot easier because when he unexpectedly can’t go to bed one night he can just purchase a new book and it is instantly there.

Opening the Box: I found the packaging easy to open and sharp!

nookNook2nook3

The Nook is an ebook reader that allows you to read your books no matter where you are. That is an advantage over the Amazon Kindle. The Kindle does not share except with other Kindles within the same account. So my husband and I do share books, but with the Nook, I can share my books with anyone anywhere. If you have an iPhone/iPod, soon to be iPad, BlackBerry, and your computers, you can swap books from the nook.

Another advantage is the color touch screen that is just below the reading area. At first I thought the reading area was smaller but it is the same size. The touch screen is quite nice and easy for me to use. You can view by cover art. My husband said I need to warn you that not all book covers that come up are suitable for kids to look at. He probably was looking at Sci Fi books just to let you know.

The combination of color and touch on the beautiful lower screen make navigating nook intuitive and simple, even for the tech novice. nook presents the controls, navigation and keyboard you need, only  when you need them.

Another advantage is you can change the screen saver and choose some very fun ones to look at. They have an Alice and Wonderland that look really cool. I’m just sad that I have to download it onto my computer then over to the nook, but they might work on changing that option. We’ll just have to wait and see.

It is very light and portable

My only complaint would be that the Nook is slow compared the Kindle. Directly downloading a book that we were trying to purchase took a little more time than we liked, but it’s still so much faster than going out to the store, esp since stores aren’t open when we are looking at getting a new book.

There Isn’t a Ceiling on Possibility

By Marlise Karlin

For years, women have been held back by the infamous ‘glass ceiling’  and have also felt stifled or riddled with restrictive thoughts running through their minds daily when it comes to both their personal and professional goals:

‘Why even try?  It’s too hard.  It will never happen.’

When resignation and anxiety weave through our minds like a sticky web of confusion – it’s time to play “The Possibility of Five.”

We all have to deal with the practical of life where the path we take appears blocked.  But, when we realize it might be happening to enlighten us of ‘adjustments’ we need to make – the door to possibility opens.  It’s then we can choose new ways to approach where our mind has been spinning in misery and misconception.

The Possibility of Five:

Look for what challenges you most. Find the five possibilities that create a solution – ones that will make you love life again – allowing you to know the world isn’t black & white – but many shades of exquisite gray.

1) Slow your mind and connect to your source of inspiration by tapping into Stillness, whether it’s in a few deep breaths or a longer session.

2) Review the question in your mind that has you asking for new answers. Let it stroll through the Stillness until ideas arise.

3) List at least five possibilities in a journal that lead will lead to positive outcome.

4) Feel the weight being lifted from your shoulders as you see there is always more than one-way it-has-to-be.

5) Empower yourself to take inspired action on the possibilities that now lie ahead of you.

No matter whom the individuals are that surround you, no matter what cynicism grips them – are a generous, empowering, inspiring source of energy that can shift concepts in a moment and bring the power of possibility alive.

When we are connected to that core of strength, love and potential that exists within every human being – doors open to more possibility than we ever dreamed.  Why not try it now with your child, yourself, and your mate.

Smile SquadTM Teaches Dental Health Lessons Through Fun Activities

Activities available at www.smilesquadhq.com

Oak Brook, Ill. (October 13, 2009) –Delta Dental Plans Association, the nation’s leading dental benefits provider, today launched the Smile SquadTM, a group of young heroes created to educate children about the importance of good oral health through fun and educational activities at www.smilesquadhq.com.

Each of the four Smile Squad heroes – Sparkle, Glint, Pearl and Chomp – represents an important aspect of maintaining good oral health. The heroes utilize good habits and smart actions to combat Captain Cavity and the efforts of his malevolent Mouth Marauders to wreak havoc on children’s oral health.

“In line with our mission to promote good oral health, we developed the Smile Squad to provide a fun way for children and parents to learn how to take care of and improve their oral health,” said Kim Volk, president and CEO of Delta Dental Plans Association.

The Web site features illustrations and bios of all heroes and villains, serves as the headquarters for the Smile Squad heroes and offers a variety of activities for children and parents to enjoy while immersing themselves in positive dental health information.

A few of the activities include:

· Smile Squad Card Game – A downloadable version of the Smile Squad card game teaches kids important oral health tips and techniques. By matching hero and villain cards with oral health action cards, players score points toward the goal of 32 points – the number of permanent teeth in a healthy smile.

· Join the Smile Squad – An invitation to join the Smile Squad allows kids to create personal characters and playing cards. To join, kids must download and print out a pledge card, declaring their commitment to practice good oral health habits as an honorary member of the Smile Squad.

· Adventures – A series of comic-book style adventures quizzes children throughout and then rewards them for making good oral health choices by advancing the story.

· Color Me Happy – Parents can print downloadable coloring pages for their kids as a reward for demonstrating good oral health habits.

· Online Games – A variety of games from simple shooters to card-matching time trials convey critical oral health information.

Parents and children can also sign up to receive e-mail alerts when new adventure episodes and other exciting features become available.

The not-for-profit Delta Dental Plans Association (www.deltadental.com) based in Oak Brook, Ill., is the leading national network of 39 independent dental service corporations specializing in providing dental benefits programs to more than 54 million Americans in more than 89,000 employee groups throughout the country. In 2007, Delta Dental formed a partnership with the National Head Start Association to help improve the oral health of the nation’s children at a critical time in their development.
