Art + Science = Pure Boy Fun With RoseArt Graphic Skinz

March 30, 2015 by Momstart 2 Comments

We received samples.

I’m learning more about what my son likes now that I’m here in LA. I’m really trying to connect with both my kids, talking to them every day and making sure that what we are doing is making them happy. My son had his birthday the same time that RoseArt sent me a fairly new product to review. We’ve actually had one of our reviewers Heather review it before. She reviewed the Graphic Skinz Design Studio for her daughter. We are focusing on the boy element of the Graphic Skinz and it was a huge hit.

image

I gave the set to my son for his birthday and he had to start making the gorilla right away. I told him I had to put it together firs and it was hard for him to wait. I got the water chamber together and explained to him this is going to work like a vaccum and it will suck all the water out while making the art stick to the plastic objects.

image

Graphic Skinz is basically a way to apply a custom “skin” (similar to a temporary tattoo) to any water safe object. The product comes with a chamber (for applying the skins), some figurines, patterned skins and more. But the real magic happens when you start to skin your own stuff: cell phone cases, light switch covers, etc.

image

I never realized that he liked art so much, or rather, I knew he liked to draw but the crafty stuff was always his sister. Plus this is kind of educational. Like I said, I was able to explain to him how a vacuum worked and that the paper was going to turn out really colorful like it did. He loved it.

More about the set we received:

  • Customize and create like never before with the Graphic Skinz Design Studio
  • Motorized Vacuum Chamber —applies graphic skinz in seconds
  • Includes 30 Graphic Skinz in bold colors and unique patterns
  • 3 customizable models—Monster Truck, Creepy Spider and Ferocious Shark—all ready for you to skin!
  • The cylindrical sponge allows you to apply graphic skinz to 3-D objects
  • The sponge detailer gives your creations 360-degrees of skinz coverage
  • A detailed instruction sheet provides all necessary steps so you can create a masterpiece!

The Robotic Ape (is what I called the gorilla above)

  • Robotic Ape design pack includes 1 large customizable model that easily snaps apart and back together
  • Four 4”x4” and Eight 2”x4” Graphic Skinz in a variety of bold and bright patterns
  • An easy-to-follow instruction sheet makes skinning a breeze
  • Design Packs are created to be used with the Motorized Vacuum Chamber (sold separately)

We also received extra skinz.

I didn’t realize at first that he could make change to it. I told him not to put the gorilla pieces back in the chamber but after further reading I found that you can. You can layer as many skinz on top of each other as you want. Here’s how you do this. You take what you want to put a skinz on and you cut the skinz to match the object’s shape and size. Then you place the yellow sponge (wet of course) around the object you have attached the skinz to. Then you turn on the chamber (after you close the lid) and press the button for 20 seconds or until all the water is sucked out and viola! You have your new really cool toy to play with that you designed!

Crafts: Flower Power Summer Art Project

Flower Power Summer Art Project by Alyson LaBarge
MomStart Contributor

Remember me sharing the Unplugged Summer Pact and Summer Mom Blogger Challenge then telling you all about the amazing Passport to Imagination program full of crafts?  You know… the one Michael’s is offering this summer with crafts for the kiddos? Well, we have been thoroughly enjoying the classes and making a wide variety of projects in different mediums.  None are too difficult to replicate at home nor terribly expensive and you can get everything you need (if you don’t already have it on hand) right at your local Michael’s store.

Getting Artsy-Fartsy

With Paige coming from China, we were truly looking forward to the week of crafts from Asia.  Monday we made some really clever pieces representing Japan.  The beautiful Cherry Blossom art was so fun and each child’s was unique as was their Koi Fish pin.

I am going to share some of the information they gave us as well as how to make your very own Cherry Blossom Art with your own kids at home. You can see a picture of the Cherry Blossom Painting project on the Michael’s web site.

Here’s What You Need To Make It:

  • Artist’s Loft Canvas Board , 8×10
  • Creatology Construction Paper
  • DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint – Pink, White, Black, Light Blue
  • Plaid Mod Podge
  • Paint Brush
  • Paper Plate
  • Scissors

Project Instructions:

  1. Lightly paint canvas board blue. Let dry.
  2. Cut your vase from desired color of construction paper.
  3. Use Mod Podge to adhere vase to canvas board, and let dry.
  4. Use black paint to draw thin tree branches. Let dry.
  5. Outline vase with black paint. Let dry.
  6. Place small amount of pink and a dot of white acrylic paint on paper plate.
  7. Use child’s finger to make Cherry Blossom dots near branches with pink. Let dry.
  8. Use end of paint brush to place a dot of white in center of each pink ‘blossom. Let dry.
This is slightly different than the way we did ours but will work out great.  Don’t you love how every painting is unique?  Below are some of the Fun Facts they shared with us about Asia.

Fun Facts About Asia:
Population: 4,140,336,501
Countries/Territories: 48
Most Populous Country: China
Most Populous City: Tokyo, Japan
Popular Languages: Mandarin, Hindi, Arabic
Popular Sports: Soccer, Cricket, Table Tennis
Popular Foods: Rice, Dim Sum, Satay
Forms of Transportation: Boat, Bike, 3-wheeled motorcycles
Asia is the world’s largest continent. It covers 1/3 of the globe and is home to 60% of the world’s population.

Which Passport Destinations are Up Next?

  • Week 2 (June 24, 26, 28) – South America
  • Week 3 (July 1, 3, 5) – Asia
  • Week 4 (July 8, 10, 12) – Europe
  • Week 5 (July 15, 17, 19) – Africa
  • Week 6 (July 22, 24, 26) – Australia
  • Week 7 (July 29, 31, August 2) – Antarctica

Paige is just dying to make the Chinese Dragon, the Thai Tiger Face and the Chinese Snake from the Year of the Snake on Friday.  Paris of course, is super excited about making her own Eiffel Tower next week and Piper cannot wait to create her very own Clay Pot Whale at the end of the month.

Do you want to add more summer crafts for your kids? There’s still plenty of time for summer crafting at Michaels with Passport to Imagination. Classes run 3 times a week through August 2nd, and are open to kids age 5 and up. Cost is $2 per class, per child. Space is somewhat limited, so be sure to check out the class schedule and find a store near you to register. Happy crafting!

* Many thanks to Michaels for sponsoring my family to attend Passport to Imagination this summer.
