My Data Manager: Keep The Peace in The Family Plan!

December 2, 2014 by Beeb 5 Comments

MyDataManager

This is a partnered post.

These days, many of us are on some sort of a “Family plan” with our cell phones. With the rising cost of cell plans, it makes a lot of sense, especially for parents that need to stay in touch with younger children across school, sports, and other extracurricular activities. Unfortunately, sharing a group phone plan can also have pitfalls: Like when you run out of data because Junior watched too many YouTube videos on his phone at recess. Fortunately, help is on the way: Today, My Data Manager has revealed its latest app update that includes shared data plan support!

My Data Manager is a great way to keep a watchful eye on your cell usage so that you can avoid overage, roaming, and running out of data before the end of the month. Now with its shared plan support, users who are in a group/family cell plan can keep track of total usage across everyone in the plan. Setting it up is easy: Just download the app and put in settings such as your plan limit and billing date. When you’re ready to add others, have them download the app – you can easily send an invite through My Data Manager – and instruct them to enter your custom plan PIN while selecting “Join Shared Plan” during the app setup. While this is ideal for those on group plans, the great thing is that you can set it up with any compatible device, regardless of whether you share a phone bill or not. As a test, I set up the app with my iPhone 4GS and iPad:

Beeb's shared plan
I have an unlimited plan, but I decided to put 5 GB in as my “Limit” as a test – you can, however, select “Unlimited” as an option if you want to access data usage stats for other reasons. As you can see, this summary page shows everyone on your shared app, their usage, and contribution to the overall total.

To break it down further, each user can access their own individual stats on their personal device, showing the total amount of MBs used through both mobile service and WiFi, as well as total amount of MBs racked up through roaming. It even forecasts how much data you will use based on prior use.

Usage summary

As you can see, I hook into my WiFi by default when I’m at home, rather than using mobile data; this app could be a helpful reminder to do that, or troubleshoot areas in your home where you or family members may be losing WiFi and connecting to data without realizing it.

This is such a smart way to not only keep an eye on your collective phone bill, but also educate any children that may be on your plan. Kids may absentmindedly rack up tons of texts or surf time, or simply not understand why it’s a big deal. By showing them your chart with a finite number of minutes, they can visually see the bars go up with their usage and start to grasp that once that limit is hit, mommy and daddy have to pay a lot more! And if the lesson doesn’t sink in right away, the parent still sees exactly what’s going on and has a heads-up to take action before they go over their plan.

But you don’t necessarily have to watch My Data Manager like a hawk – you can set alarms within the app to go off after pre-determined limits for data, roaming and even WiFi have been hit; this can be enabled on every device.

Usage graph
This app isn’t just about responsible usage – it’s also about empowering you with enough information to help you cut out anything that might be sucking up your plan unintentionally. Some apps can be big resource hogs, so by checking out the “Graph” section, you can get an hour by hour breakdown of megabytes used, to help clue you in on your usage and bring to light anything that is using up more than its fair share of your minutes. In all, I think My Data Manager is a great resource for any family that has multiple devices!

Download My Data Manager for free on iTunes and the Google Play store!

Sharing Family Moments With Livelens: $50 PayPal Giveaway (Open Worldwide)

May 29, 2014 by Beeb 48 Comments

Livelens

Compensation provided for post & video creation.

It’s hard being an expat sometimes. Half my family is in England, and the American half are spread out all over the country; some even moved to Australia. The advent of the Internet has made it easier to feel connected in real-time; instead of waiting for letters to arrive in the mail and getting a Christmas card portrait once a year, I can log on to Facebook and see the daily milestones and news happening in my branches of family all over the world – and that’s comforting!

Livelens Example

As technology continues to evolve, the distance between my loved ones is bridged little by little. Although static photos and updates are great, it’s not the same as being there. So I’m excited about Livelens, a new app for iOS and Android that allows you to stream videos to Facebook in real time. This means that instead of just snapping a photo with your phone, you can actually share what you’re doing live – so relatives on the other side of the planet can watch graduations, weddings, children’s birthday parties, and other family events right on Facebook. You can announce your event in advance, so people can mark their calendars to watch; and if the time zone makes it difficult for them to “Tune in”, never worry: Livelens automatically saves an archive of the video in “The cloud” which can be played later.

Livelens video stream

There is no limit on how long your video can be, so this is perfect for sharing family reunions, baby showers, or other gatherings that are hard to sum up in a 2 minute clip. And on the professional side, you can also opt to put a price on your videos – say, if you want to stream your band’s concert or share a blogging seminar. As your video streams, you’ll be able to see who is watching as well as receive comments and likes. This helps to make the experience truly interactive and bridge the gap that distance creates!

For more on Livelens, along with a bonus entry code for our giveaway worth 10 extra points daily, click here to to watch my special video message! Note: Users must download the Livelens app to view this video. Once you have downloaded the app, you will need to search for “MomStart” in order to pull the video up and finish watching.

Livelens is a totally free app available for iOS 5.0 and up on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch; you can download the app on iTunes here. Android users (2.3 and up) can get Livelens from the Google Play store by clicking here.

Play Maleficent Free Fall on Windows & Windows Phone #MaleficentEvent

May 16, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Disney launched its official Maleficent Free Fall app for Windows and Windows Phone this week. This is ahead of the May 30 movie premiere and is available for download in the Windows and Windows Phone

image

It looks a lot like the Frozen game that my kids love to play but instead of being Elsa or Anna you get to be Maleficent and there’s a little more to it. Maleficent Free Fall takes the match-3 fun of Frozen Free Fall but with a “dark” twist. You begin the game as a young Maleficent and journey through the map to explore her untold story, unlock her raven, Diaval and discover other mysterious surprises. You switch and slide the board of enchanted gemstones to create matches of 3 or more as you trigger cascading combos and conquer original objectives. As Maleficent, you use her green magic to instantly vanish the same color gemstones. You can also call upon Diaval to swoop down and rearrange the board, or cast tendrils of thorns to clear entire row and columns. And as you play, you unlock more unique power-ups and experience Maleficent’s fierce desire for revenge.

10 Gardening Apps for Gardening Enthusiasts of All Experience Levels

May 4, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Wow that weather has been really nice, I mean yes the rain came back but I get the idea we might be in for a nice summer. Thankfully, my friends over at AT&T did some geek homework and found that there are mobile apps galore for gardening enthusiasts of all experience levels – from the beginner gardener to the master gardener.  After weeding through many of these apps, AT&T has compiled a top 10 list to help your garden grow:

image1. Food Gardening Guide (iOS) – If you’re interested in venturing into organic food gardening, this free app from MOTHER EARTH NEWS magazine provides expert gardening techniques, information on top crops, and access to the magazine’s blog feeds covering “Do It Yourself” projects, natural health, green homes and more.

2. My Garden Lite (Android) – With this app, you can create a list of your plants, store information about them, such as the type of plant, its location, the date it was planted, and get useful tips of the week. You can include photos of each plant as well. And most importantly, the app provides you with reminders to water your plants.

3. Grow Your Own (iOS) – This app from the Royal Horticultural Society is designed as an aid for the “less confident” gardeners. It’s a good resource for anyone looking to start growing their own produce. The free version of the app provides useful information about 20 common varieties of fruit and vegetables. The profiles for each plant will help you decide what to grow based on your competence and the space you have available. The app provides sowing and harvesting instructions and information on common problems. Additionally, you can add fruit and vegetable profiles to the “My Garden” section of the app, which offers calendar alerts to remind you what to do and when.

4. Garden Insects Guide (iOS) – Not all insects are bad for your garden, but you don’t want to let the ones that are bug your plants to death!  This free guide from the editors of MOTHER EARTH NEWS magazine will help you identify the bad bugs from the good bugs. It provides advice on how you can prevent damage from the pest insects and attract the beneficial ones. The app has a “Pest Control” section that tells you how to get rid of insect pests organically and naturally.

5. Pacific Northwest Bugwood (iOS/Android) – For those of us in the Pacific Northwest that are digging in the dirt and removing plants, there is always the possibility that we could encounter invasive plants and insects.  Thankfully, you can report invasive plants and pests straight from your smartphone with the Pacific Northwest Early Detection Network app.  Use your phone’s camera to submit an image of your sighting to add validity to your report and the GPS automatically captures your current location.  The app also includes Species ID Guides include images and information on the worst non-native invasive insects.

6. Washington Wildflowers (iOS/Android) – The University of Washington Herbarium at the Burke Museum, the authors of Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest, and High Country Apps partnered to produce the Washington Wildflowers plan identification app for mobile devices.  The app provides images, species descriptions, range maps, bloom period and technical descriptions for 870 common wildflowers, shrubs and vines found in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

7. Veg Garden (Android) – The Veg Garden app helps you plan your kitchen vegetable plot before you even go near a seed shop. For each month, the app shows how you are progressing through each produce schedule. Crops are grouped into categories, Sow Indoors, Harden, Sow Outdoors and Harvest. The app provides you with sowing instructions and tips for each produce. You can also store editable notes associated with any of the produce you’re growing.

8. Planting Planner (iOS) – This is the official Organic Gardening magazine’s app, and it’s a great tool to make sure you’re planting varieties at the right time.  Once you’ve set up your garden on the app, you can select what you want to grow from the apps extensive database, and it then gives you information about how and when to plant seeds. The app also offers weather information, including frost dates, to protect your seedlings from harsh elements.

9. Garden Squared (Android) – This app assists in planning and tracking square foot gardens—ranging from 1’ by 1’ to 4’ by 8’—and even patio containers, seedlings and raised garden beds. Details of every plot can be saved along with a journal entry/task tracker. Great for beginners!

10. Garden Manager: Plant Alarm (Android) – This app reminds you exactly when to water, fertilize, spray pesticide and more. Custom tasks are also available so you will be reminded to tend to specific plants. You can take a photo log of how your plants grow, and then brag about your success on social media.

Letroca: Fun, Free Word Game For iOS & Android!

April 11, 2014 by Beeb 4 Comments

Letroca

This post was brought to you by Fanatee.

As a writer, it should come as no surprise that word puzzles are my very favorite type of game! Back in the dark ages prior to computers, I used to do crossword books; as time moved on, I began playing word games built for PC and, eventually, mobile devices. As fun as shoot-em-up games may be, I find puzzles to be the most relaxing type of game to play, and word quizzes are satisfying to me since writing is my first love!

So when I was introduced to Letroca earlier this week, I thought it sounded like a game that was right up my alley. This totally free app for iOS and Android devices is a word-hunt puzzle game that presents you with a series of letters and a blank playing board. The letters can be re-arranged to create a plethora of words, and your job is to unscramble as many of these as possible. To play, you tap each letter with your finger to place it on the board to form a word, then click “Send” to see if it matches the word bank. If so, that word will be illuminated on the board and you’ll move on to the next one. Depending on which mode of play you select, your goal will either be finding the largest possible word (Classic mode) or at least half of the possible word combinations (Half mode). You have two and a half minutes in each of these modes to solve the puzzle; or you can select “Zen” mode to get unlimited time to leisurely find words. This mode is my favorite!

Letroca gameplay

Letroca is an addictive little game that is a little like Scrabble meets Wheel of Fortune. What makes it stand out among other word puzzles I’ve played is the short, manageable rounds that are easy to play in quick bursts of time. The gameplay is fun and challenging, and I love that the app is totally free – there are some ads within the app, as you’d expect, but they are unobtrusive. Another neat feature is that you can also play Letroca in both Spanish and Portuguese in addition to English!

I envision Letroca being a fun way of filling time the next time I’m on a flight with no Wi-Fi! If you love word games even half as much as I do, you must check this app out.

Letroca is available for iPhone and iPad on the iTunes store – click here to download it for iOS; if you have an Android device, you can download the app on the Google Play Store by clicking here. You can also check out the gameplay online at Letroca-Game.com and get more information on their Facebook page.

Organize And File Your Taxes On The Go: They Have an App For That #ATTSeattle

April 11, 2014 by Momstart Leave a Comment

Next Tuesday, April 15 is the IRS Tax filing deadline for 2014.  Not surprisingly, the most dreaded time of the year for many of us is tax time. There aren’t many tasks in life more confusing, stressful, annoying and overwhelming than tax season. But thanks to technology, there are apps that can simplify the tax filing process and make it a little less daunting.

AT&T has compiled a list of these apps to help you organize and file your taxes on the go:

1.      H&R Block Tax Preparation (Free, iOS) – This iPad app provides free tax preparation, printing and e-filing of your federal return. It also promises free-of-charge unlimited advice from a tax expert through live chat, in-person audit support and guarantees 100 percent accuracy and a maximum refund.

2.      IRS2GO (Free, Android, iOS) – With this IRS-developed app, you can check the status of your federal income tax refund, request tax records, access tax tips, search for an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site near you, and interact with the IRS by following its Twitter feed, watching helpful videos on YouTube and signing up for email updates. Available in Spanish.

3.      Shoeboxed (Free, Android, iOS) – Maximize your reimbursements and tax deductions in seconds with the free Shoeboxed Receipt and Mileage Tracker app. With this app you can instantly archive receipts on-the-go, transform receipt images into accurate, human verified data, access an archive of your categorized IRS-accepted receipts, generate email expense reports, track your mileage, and export expenses to QuickBooks, Wave Accounting, Excel, Outright, Xero, and dozens of other tools.

4.      TaxCaster by Turbo Tax (Free, Android, iOS) – Using the same tax calculator found in TurboTax, this free app will provide you a quick estimate of your tax refund. The app forecasts your tax information so there are no surprises when you sit down to file. With an estimate of your refund, you can make last-minute changes to make sure you’re getting the maximum refund.  Also, use an estimate from TaxCaster to adjust your paycheck withholdings so you take home more money or plan ahead so you pay less tax. TaxCaster doesn’t prepare your taxes, but based on the information you enter into the app, it will recommend the best Turbo Tax product to suit your particular tax situation.

5.      SnapTax:  (Free, Android, iOS) – This app from Turbo Tax is idea for the person who has a simple tax return and a complicated schedule. It allows you to e-file your return on the go in about 10 minutes. You just snap a photo of your W-2, answer some questions and e-file securely from your mobile device. You can prepare and e-file your federal tax return in the app for free, but preparing and e-filing a state return in the app will cost $14.99. A maximum refund is guaranteed. Available in Spanish.

6.      iDonatedIt ($2.99, iOS) / Donation Assistant (Free, Android, iOS) – Have you ever dropped off a bag of clothes at a charity and wondered what that bag of clothes was really worth? The iDonatedIt app for $2.99 tracks and values your non-cash donations. The app tracks the date you donated your non-cash items, the name of the receiving charity and the fair market value of the donated items. It also builds lists of your donated items, allows you to keep a permanent record of your donated items that meet the compliance requirements of the IRS and you can attach a photo to your donation list to further document your donation. Similarly, the Donation Assistant app from TaxACT tracks your charitable donations so you can maximize your tax deduction for cash, non-cash and recurring donations. The app can be downloaded for free to iOS and Android devices.

7.      Quick Tax Reference (Free, iOS) – Bloomberg BNA’s handy Quick Tax Reference app gives you access to tax rates and schedules with just a few clicks. This free iPhone app includes current tax rates and retroactive ones back to 2011. It also provides standard mileage rates, corporate tax rate schedules, individual tax rate schedules, standard deductions/personal exemptions, capital gains and dividends taxed as net capital gain, income tax rates for estates, trusts/estate and gift taxes, tax code pension, retirement plan limits, and more. In addition, the app calculates taxable income for different filing statuses.

8.      MyTaxRefund by Turbo Tax (Free, Android, iOS) – If you’re counting the days until your tax return arrives, you may find this app handy. Just enter your information into the app and it will quickly provide you with the e-file status of your tax return after you’ve filed it and provide an immediate estimate of your federal and state tax refund delivery date.
