Story Time: Madeline at the White House Book Giveaway

January 8, 2011 by Momstart 122 Comments

Wow, this book showed up this morning, Zoe tore into it, crawled into my lap and asked me to read to her. Oh how I love my daughter so much!

We’ve been watching all of the Madeline DVD’s that we’ve received, so I’m familiar with the storyline, but what I didn’t expect was

how much I enjoyed reading it to her. The story is in a rhyme and just flows. Surprisingly the story ended quickly because it was so fun to read. We greatly enjoyed it.

Madeling at the Whitehouse Book CoverAbout the Book

Welcome to America, Madeline!

Madeline and friends are off to enjoy a wonderful American adventure. The White House in Washington, D.C., is their destination, where they are the guests of the president’s lonely only daughter for the annual Easter Egg Roll. Cake and ice cream, dress-up games, and scary stories told in the dark are capped off by a magical nighttime tour of the capital’s most famous landmarks, before it’s time for the twelve little girls in two straight lines to say, “Au revoir, America!”

The Story Behind the Book

“The idea for sending Madeline to the White House was my grandfather’s and grew out of his friendship with Jacqueline Kennedy. In a series of letters from late 1961 and early 1962, my grandfather sounded out the First Lady on ideas for the book, which he proposed calling “Madeline visits Caroline,” with text from Mrs. Kennedy herself. My grandfather died in 1961, before the book was finished.”          – John Bemelmans Marciano, author and illustrator of Madeline at the White House and grandson of Madeline creator Ludwig Bemelmans

My daughter has the original madeline memorized so I think it would be a good idea to get her a new one. This looks like fun and would be a great learning tool for a trip to DC!

Hi Louise. I have the sweetest (okay, I’m bias) little granddaughter and unfortunately they live out of state, so I miss out on getting to read books to her and let her read to me. I would love to send her this one. Then she knows I’m still thinking of her every time she reads it.

    Thanks for a chance to win….Tracy 🙂

My little reader really and truly absolutely loves to read. I was extremely impressed with how much a 5 yr old could read and how many words were memorized. We have to read at least one book every night….normally it’s 3, if not more. I enjoy watching the excitement a 5 yr old has for reading.

We LOVE Madeline in our house and have several books and a doll, but I’ve never seen this book. It looks cute! Thanks.
