Sadly, I spent the first 30 years of my life never enjoying the taste Naan, or even know it existed for that matter. Have you heard of naan? Oh, how I hope you have. It’s a simple, delicious oven-baked flatbread that can be used in so many ways. The delicious chewy flatbread has become a common staple in our home to use for paninis, pizza, garlic bread or just plain, smothered with our favorite hummus.
The key to creating authentically light, naturally smoky-tasting naan is heat. Stonefire™, makers of the number one naan in North America, is armed with the largest commercial tandoor oven in the world capable of the searing heat required for true Indian flatbread.
The Ajmera family, founders of Stonefire™ Authentic Flatbreads and baking veterans with over 40 years of experience, invented a new technology that perfectly mirrors the intense heat of this ancient oven and use a cooking method that dates back centuries. The naan is ready within seconds of being placed in the tandoor.
Stonefire’s™ naan is hand stretched and prepared in small batches with Ghee (clarified butter) and fresh buttermilk, following a traditional recipe. Like all Stonefire flatbreads, the naan is made with natural ingredients and is free of preservatives, additives, artificial colors, trans fat and hydrogenated oils. Stonefire™ Authentic Flatbreads has perfected recipes for original, whole grain and fire roasted garlic naan.
“Authentic naan is a profound culinary experience,” says the Ajmera family. “We hope to popularize this worldly cuisine staple that has been enjoyed throughout South Asia for well over 1,000 years.”
I was given a great opportunity to sample all three Stonefire™ Naan: Original, Whole Grain and Fire Roasted Garlic. I didn’t even a chance to make anything special with the Original since my family and I couldn’t wait to smother some tasty roasted red-pepper hummus on it. I hid the Whole Grain and the Garlic Naan so that I could create some homemade pizzas that evening. Pizza is without a doubt my favorite food. With the right toppings, I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
And Stonefire™ Naan is a great alternative to the more expensive soggy, tasteless pizza dough and crusts available at the grocery store. Here’s the super simple pizza creation I made with Stonefire™ Whole Wheat and Garlic Naan:
Grilled Naan Fresh Mozzerella & Tomato Pizza Recipe
Stonefire™ Naan (any variety will do)
Fresh Roma Tomatoes, sliced
Buffalo Mozzarella, sliced
Fresh Basil, chopped or whole
Salt and Pepper (optional)
Step One: Brush naan with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Step Two: Add tomato slices and mozzarella on top.
Step Three: Sprinkle with fresh basil.
Step Four: Fire up the grill and cook covered for about 5 minutes or until toppings are nicely melted.
Too easy, even for me who knows nothing about the art of grilling. Fortunately, I know how to light our gas grill and that’s all it takes. Although naan can be enjoyed from the oven in only minutes, I find that the grill is a wonderful way to enhance Stonefire™ Naan’s flavor and texture.
