I became a homeowner at 19, and like many young first-time homeowners, all my furniture was hand-me-downs or secondhand. As the years have gone on, I’ve continually made upgrades and gradually swapped out old pieces for new ones. As an insomniac prone to aches and pains, I’ve had a new mattress on my list for a while, but had not yet gotten around to tossing my beat-up old one. So when GhostBed reached out and asked if I’d like to try out one of their mattresses, I knew this was the perfect time to say “Bye-bye” to old mattress!
So why is this brand called “GhostBed”? The idea is that their blend of latex and gel memory foam create the perfect balance between soft and firm to create an experience where you can’t even tell it’s there. Their website features an adorable graphic of two ghosties in a Yin Yang pattern to symbolize this balance, and the box came complete with a serene, sleepy ghost. As someone who collects Halloween stuff, I was immediately charmed!
I couldn’t believe how relatively small the box was – how they could fit an entire mattress in there was amazing to me! The mattress comes vacuum sealed, and as soon as we opened the bag and placed it on the bed frame, it unfurled like a taco and sank into place immediately. You can watch the process of setting it up in this video I took:
We were impressed at how relatively light and easy to move this mattress is. As a contrast, our old mattress was so heavy and unweildly that we struggled mightily to get it outside: In fact, we had to pull the van were were using as close to the house as possible in order to toss the old mattress in the back, and we only barely got it in. (And then the van got stuck in the mud because of where we had to park to squeeze the mattress in, but that’s a whole other story!!) I am so glad to know that if I ever need to move my GhostBed mattress to another room or house, it will be about 10 million times easier!!
So that’s all well and good – but how does that mattress feel? I’ve been sleeping on it for two weeks now, and I personally love it! I always thought I was more of a squishy, marshmallow-y mattress kind of person, but the nice thing about GhostBed is that it is supportive without being “Hard”. It conforms to your body nicely – I notice that it gives my lower back more support when I lie flat on my back, which is usually painful because before there was a “Gap” between my back and the mattress where there was no support. The layer of aerated latex foam also makes the mattress feel cool to the touch to help you regulate temperature and comfort at night – this will be nice for me, as I often bundle up when I get into bed because I feel cold, and then wake up sweating because I get too hot in the night.
