Jai just loves gadgets of all kinds, so I always try to find fun tech products to tuck under the tree for him when Christmas rolls around. I’ve given him bluetooth speakers in the past, and those were a big hit – he’s always carrying his iPod around, and he uses speakers all the time to make listening easier when he’s doing certain tasks where headphones aren’t possible (Or just less convenient). We have been on the road a TON this year, and there have been many times where he pulled out a bluetooth speaker so that we could listen to his iPod while on long drives. The only downside is that, with all the noise from the road, it ended up being hard to hear even when the speaker was at full volume.
So when I heard about the new DECK from SOL REPUBLIC, this was a total no-brainer Christmas gift for Jai. I received a DECK in the mail this week and I was eager to give it a sneaky test while Jai wasn’t home. Not only is it SUPER loud and clear to begin with, but it actually can be switched between “Indoor” and “Outdoor” mode – “Outdoor” mode gives it an extra boost in volume, which I think is going to be awesome on our next road trip!
I have to say, I’m impressed so far with the sound, clarity, features, and appearance of this unit. It’s easy to get started – just take it out of the box and charge it up before your first use. I’m not sure how long it needs to charge for full power – the light turned green, indicating “Ready” after 15 minutes out of the box, but when I started using it the battery died so it wasn’t ready for its first use. I plugged it back in for maybe an hour before the light turned green again, and it’s lasting longer this time around.
This unit is so sleek and cool – I like the “Futuristic” approach they took. When you power it on, it plays a little jingle and the voice of DECK tells you the status of your battery – for example, “Battery almost full”. DECK also talks to you during other commands, such as announcing when it’s been switched between indoor and outdoor mode. This product was made in conjunction with Motorola, so the Motorola “M” logo button is your primary controller for this unit’s features. (But you can use it with any Bluetooth or NFC enabled device – I tested this with my iPhone 4S.) Depending on how many times you press the “M” button, it will play and pause the music, skip tracks, and control indoor/outdoor mode. It says you can also use this button to make and answer calls – when I hold it down, it just switches into “Outdoor” mode, so I’m not sure if this is for Motorola phones only or if I just did something wrong. The indicator light on the unit is designed to alert you to incoming calls and charge/device connection status as well by flashing different colors. “+” and “-” buttons on the sides of the DECK control volume.
Another unique feature on this is “Heist” mode, where you can pair multiple devices with the DECK, up to 5, and hijack the DECK to play whatever you desire. This could make our road trips really interesting! 😉
I know Jai is going to be totally thrilled and surprised to get this for Christmas, so I’m pretty pleased with myself! If you have a techie/music fan/iPod junkie on your list, this could make a really fun present.
