It’s no secret that I have struggled with insomnia my entire adult life. It’s hard to understand just how profound the impact of sleep deprivation is unless you’ve gone through it, and even when you do, sometimes you get so used to chronic sleeplessness that you forget what it feels like to function normally. I went through a period over the last few months where I was getting between 2 to 4 hours of sleep a night for several nights in a row – I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to sleep for two hours and still not be able to fall asleep the next night, even though you’re wrecked with exhaustion. I’ve been to doctors and tried all the typical sleep hygiene advice, so I was really tearing my hair out trying to get back on track. Thankfully, I had a few life lines thrown my way.
The first beacon of hope was about two months ago when I stumbled on a podcast made for insomniacs called Sleep With Me. The podcast is essentially a soothing bedtime story – it’s just interesting enough to keep your brain occupied, but purposely surreal and just dull enough to lull your mind into sleep. It’s really an ingenious thing, and I’ve been listening to it every single night since I found it. If you have a brain that won’t shut up, I definitely recommend adding this one to your podcast list!
Then, about two weeks after I found the podcast, I got an email from a company called Tomorrow Sleep. They are a business that sells a memory foam hybrid mattress, but it’s so much more than a bed: It’s an entire sleep system designed to hack your sleep in the most futuristic way possible. They have an entire suite of accessories that go with the mattress, from temperature-regulating comforters to a sleep tracker that actually affixes to the mattress itself, rather than having to be worn on your person. I was immediately intrigued!
Tomorrow Sleep sent me a mattress and accessories to help me “Transform my tomorrow”, and it’s been wonderfully comfortable and provided me with new insights. Over the next month, I’ll be sharing a detailed review of the Tomorrow Sleep system, how it works, and my experience over a series of posts. If you’re sick and tired of being tired, then you’ll want to check it out!
