I read a preview about Secretariat while I was stranded in an airport with my kids. Hah! It looks like a great movie. The actors are amazing, the line up is amazing and the story is amazing.
The story:
Based on the remarkable true story, “Secretariat” chronicles the spectacular journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Housewife and mother Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) agrees to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Against all odds, Chenery—with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich)—manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what may be the greatest racehorse of all time.
Notes:
- In 1973, Secretariat became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in 25 years, setting race records that still stand today in the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.
- Penny Chenery, now 87, is an integral resource in the making of the film. She also appears as an extra in one of the film’s scenes.
- In 1973, Secretariat graced the covers of three magazines the same week: Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated.
- Director Randall Wallace, whose directorial credits include “We Were Soldiers,” is the Oscar®- and Golden Globe®-nominated screenwriter of “Braveheart.”
- In 1999, the U.S. Postal Service unveiled a 33-cent postage stamp with Secretariat’s image.
Against all odds, housewife and mother Penny Chenery (Diane Lane)—with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich)—navigates the male-dominated horseracing business, ultimately taking Secretariat on a spectacular journey to become the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time.

The year that Secretariat won the triple crown, I graduated from high school. Back then we didn’t even have any girls’ sports teams. So when I decided to major in electrical engineering in college, I knew that it would be a long road. But I did it and I got a job in my field (even though a number of personnel people barely let me in the front door for an interview.).

I don’t know if it’s incredible, but, I survived an abduction at knife point, was able to get away, and have the man put in jail for 26 yrs. Turns out he was a cronic sex offender.

My journey was when my 1st daughter was 6 months old. I decided to go to England to stay with my Brother and Sister-in-law. I had never been on plane and that was quite the interesting journey for me.

Well, I guess the most important thing or extreme journey would be when my son was 5 yrs. old and we found out he had to have both back and brain surgery. The drs. weren’t very hopeful, they said with taking half of his brain they didn’t know if he would walk, talk or even know who anyone was. We only had 6 days from the time they said he had to have surgery till the day he had it, so really no time to really stress.Well after 9 1/2 hrs. in the OR, I got to go back to see him while he was still in recovery. He said “Moma where’s Daddy?” That was the sweestest thing ever. The second thing that is so amazing was he was suppose to be home-schooled for 1 yr., well he was only in the hospital for 4 1/2 days, and returned to school with only missing 6 days for surgery. They also told us he would probably be mentally challenged, but I am glad to report that he is a straight A student, and on the Jr. Beta Club!

I will not express an incredibly journey in my life but rather my mothers (who will lovelovelove this movie). My mom grew up very poor but loved and was superb at riding horses. She did not have the tack to compete with the other riders in her circut but her skills pushed her all the way to the worlds. My mom is so impressive. She now teaches other children to ride and is truly blessed with a gift. I know she would love to wear this shirt while giving lessons and telling her kids the story of someone who overcame obstacles.

My journey to motherhood was long and incredible…I was 29 when I had my first and my second 3 years later. A happy journey ending with 2 incredible kids, wouldn’t trade it for the world!.
